.Current head coach of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's football team, Jace Rindahl joins this week's episode of "Not Even D2". Prior to leading the Warhawks, Jace played four years (2005-08) for UW-Whitewater where he played in four straight national championships. His junior year (2007), him and his team won the first ever national championship in UW-Whitewater history. Jace would follow that with becoming a D3 football Defensive Player of the Year in his senior year. Post playing career, Rindahl would become the linebackers coach during a dominant UW-Whitewater run. Joining Coach Leipold's (current Kansas football head coach) staff the group would win three straight national championships- winning 46 straight games. Your host, Colonel Tom Rendall, unpacks the gallantry, trials, and historical impact of the Tuskegee Airmen through the personal experiences of Colonel Stewart, a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. Colonel Harry T. Stewart Jr. stands as one of the most honored members of the Tuskegee Airmen. Born on July 24, 1924, in Newport News, Virginia, his family relocated to Queens, New York, when he was two, near North Beach Airport. This proximity sparked his lifelong passion for aviation as he gazed at the planes flying above. At 17, sensing his forthcoming draft into World War II, he excelled in a military examination that singled out prospective pilots, which led to his enlistment in the US Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. Stewart earned his pilot wings at Tuskegee Air Field, Alabama, and, still in his teens, received his commission as a second lieutenant. He underwent combat fighter training in the P-40 Warhawk and P-47 Thunderbolt, and in 1944 he was deployed to Italy with the all-black 332nd Fighter Group. Stewart completed 43 combat missions in the P-51 Mustang. His most notable combat success occurred on April 1, 1945, as then First Lieutenant Stewart and other P-51 pilots protected B-24 Liberators during a bombing mission. The engagement that followed saw Stewart down three FW-190s, securing him the Distinguished Flying Cross. The episode recorded on March 3rd explores Stewart's rigorous training, pivotal combat encounters, and his triumph in the inaugural Air Force "Top Gun" competition of 1949. Stewart, as one of the last Tuskegee Airmen, provides invaluable insight into their contribution to military aviation history. Midway, the episode features spotlights on the Mighty Eighth Air Force and The World War II Foundation, then resumes with a discussion on the timeless relevance of the Tuskegee Airmen's heritage in today's military and aviation realms. Welcome back to the 70's in the cave this time as we celebrate the two films of Warhawk Tanzania. We start off with Force Four from 1975 where Tanzania is part of a 4-person team that are assigned special missions by an unknown group. Their mission in the movie is to recover a stolen African artifact, but to do so is going to require a LOT of martial arts, and this movie really piles it on. We follow that with his starring role in 1976's Devil's Express. This really shows how magnetic he is and how tragic it is that we never got to see him continue as a leading man. The story this time is focused on an ancient Chinese demon that escapes to the USA and hides in the New York city subway, where it goes on a murderous rampage. Tanzania really turns it up in this one and we also get to see some really excellent supporting actors helping with the heavy lifting. Though both films are recommended, Devil's Express is really the jewel. Both movies are available on free streaming sites, and we urge you to check them out! Tex Johnston was an American test pilot and aviation pioneer known for his significant contributions to the development of jet aircraft. He is most famous for his daring demonstration flight of the Boeing 707, which earned him both praise and controversy. Alvin Melvin Johnson was born on the 18th of August, 1914, in Admire, Kansas. He developed an early fascination with aviation, and at the age of 15, he took his first flying lesson. He earned his pilot's license shortly after and began barnstorming and performing aerobatic stunts at air shows.During World War II, Johnston served as a fighter pilot in the United States Army Air Forces. He flew the P-40 Warhawk and the P-47 Thunderbolt in combat, earning the nickname "Tex" due to his southern accent and cowboy mannerisms.After the war, Johnston's career took off, and he became a test pilot for Bell Aircraft Corporation. He was involved in the development and testing of several experimental aircraft, including the X-1, the first plane to break the sound barrier.In 1950, Tex Johnston joined Boeing, a leading aircraft manufacturer, as a chief test pilot. He played a crucial role in testing and refining the company's early jet aircraft.On the 7th of August, 1955, Johnston performed the now-famous barrel roll with the prototype Boeing 707, the Dash 80, during the Gold Cup hydroplane races in Seattle. In a daring move, he executed a complete barrel roll with the massive jet airliner in front of astonished spectators, demonstrating the aircraft's stability and maneuverability. The risky stunt was controversial, as it was an unauthorized maneuver, and some executives at Boeing were initially unhappy about it. However, the flight's success proved the 707's capabilities and ultimately helped secure Boeing's position in the jet airliner market.Despite the temporary controversy, Tex Johnston continued to be a respected test pilot and made significant contributions to aviation. He later flew the Boeing 727 and contributed to the development of other Boeing aircraft.Tex Johnston retired from Boeing in 1966 but remained active in the aviation community, advocating for aviation safety and the importance of skilled pilots. He passed away on the 29th of October, 1998, leaving behind a legacy of daring and innovation in the field of aviation.Tex Johnston's famous barrel roll remains one of the most iconic moments in aviation history and a testament to his skill and confidence as a test pilot.
