Geri speaks to Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, and Peter Baynham—cowriters of BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM—about why they decided to revisit the iconic character, how intense it was to film that now infamous Rudy Giuliani scene, and the reality of filming in very dangerous situations. Sacha Baron Cohen is best known for his portrayal of bawdy and raucous fictional satirical characters such as Ali G, Borat Sagdiyev, Brüno Gehard and Admiral General Aladeen. Sacha and his cowriters and frequent collaborators Anthony Hines and Peter Baynham have featured these characters in a number of films and television series, including ALI G INDAHOUSE, THE 11 O’CLOCK SHOW, BRÜNO, THE DICTATOR, and BORAT: CULTURAL LEARNINGS OF AMERICA FOR MAKE BENEFIT GLORIOUS NATION OF KAZAKHSTAN, the latter of which was nominated for the 2006 Writers Guild and Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay. Their latest collaboration, BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM, follows the titular Borat Sagdiyev after his release from a stint in prison for bringing shame to his country, as he risks life and limb when he returns to America with his 15-year-old daughter. The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime. — Read shownotes, transcripts, and other member interviews: www.onwriting.org/ — Follow the Guild on social media: Twitter: @OnWritingWGAE | @WGAEast Facebook: /WGAEast Instagram: @WGAEast
Listen to our full talk at the American Film Market for earlier this month with regular hosts Giles Alderson and Ian Sharp joined by writer, director and producer Dan Mazer to discuss filmmaking on both an indie and studio level. Dan talks about his start in the world of film through his writing for television with Sacha Baron Cohen on Da Ali G Show, how from there he got involved with writing and producing the features Ali G Indahouse, Borat and Bruno. Whilst continuing to write further features Bridget Jones’s Baby and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Dan has also directed I Give It a Year, Dirty Grandpa and the upcoming Home Alone - the latter of which was filmed during the current pandemic. Ian and Giles compare their experience on the indie side with Dan’s studio work, discussing how they’ve each managed to get their respective projects off the ground, dealing with financiers and maintaining good relationships with studios, as well as fellow producers and directors. Finally, Dan discusses the strategy of releasing Borat Subsequent Moviefilm on Amazon for on-demand viewing, why the decision was taken and how they used the timing of the global pandemic and the US election to their advantage. Da Ali G Show is a British satirical television series created by and starring English comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. In the series, Baron Cohen plays three unorthodox journalists: faux-streetwise poseur Ali G, Kazakh reporter Borat Sagdiyev, and gay Austrian fashion enthusiast Brüno Gehard. These characters conduct real interviews with unsuspecting people, many of whom are celebrities, high-ranking government officials, and other well-known figures, during which they are asked absurd and ridiculous questions. The first (2000) season originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK, and the second and third (2003–2004) seasons on HBO in the United States. The second series was known as Ali G in da USAiii in the UK and Australia.[1] In 2005, HBO stated they had no plans to make an additional season of the show.[2] Baron Cohen has gone on to make four films featuring each of his three characters from the show: Ali G Indahouse (2002), Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006), Brüno (2009) and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2020). In 2014, FXX reaired the show (including episodes unaired in the United States) under the branding Ali G: Rezurection.[3]

What started as a throwaway joke: Sacha Baron Cohen Season - posed in one of our Patreon-exclusive Diminisodes - springs into bizarre reality (but not particularly bizarre by 2020 standards). This week, we're covering Ali G from his origins on The 11 O'Clock Show, through Da Ali G Show, Ali G Indahouse and culminating in Ali G in da USAiii. We're also covering The Dictator and Grimsby so that we don't have to worry about them next week, when we do Borat, Bruno and Who Is America?.

This week join Geoff and Mike in their discussion of the lesser known Sacha Baron Cohen vehicle Ali G Indahouse. While this film doesn’t follow the mockumentary style of Borat and Bruno, it still manages to be ridiculous and hilarious. So enjoy the episode and Keep It Real.
