Her album Water earned her a JUNO Award nomination as well as Grammy Award consideration and she has shared stages with renowned artists such as Michael Bublé, Sean Paul, Ziggy Marley, Chronixx, Arkells, Brandy and Wyclef Jean. Today Ammoye joins me to talk about being nominated for Reggae Recording of the Year at the 2026 JUNOs for the song “More Reggae (Funk It Up),” her collaboration with powerhouse performer Samora. Then, we get to know Sonya Singh. Following the success of her debut, Sonya returns with “The Fake Matchmaker,” a delightful, trope-rich rom-com with real heart. With sharp humour and irresistible chemistry, the novel delivers a smart, modern take on dating, expectations, and the beautiful messiness of falling for someone at the wrong time. Told through a fun, fizzy rom-com lens, Manisha’s story is also steeped in Indian culture, exploring family dynamics and generational expectations with warmth and wit.

Photo by Matthew HedgesInternationally renowned Lutruwita/Tasmanian genuine sideshow freak Samora Squid will be doing an hour of their most full-on material for SQUID'S SUNDAY SIDESHOW, a DIY punk residency at famed Naarm/Melbourne venue The Tote, and don't say you weren't warned.Sword swallowing. Live piercing. Extreme contortion. A Samora Squid show is shocking, confronting, hilarious and not for the faint of heart. “What I do, it's not stand up, though I'm sure I'll say some dumb shit that people will laugh at. There'll be a lot of non-verbal storytelling, involving sharp pointy things and burny things. When I registered the show, I ticked all the trigger warnings. [Laughs] Not all of them were in the show yet, but I wanted to cover my bases.”Having spent years performing everywhere from Europe to Dubai, SQUID'S SUNDAY SIDESHOW was born when the Melbourne Comedy Festival put out applications. “I thought, “It's been a while since I've staged something I've made … This is a good chance for me to make a new show, to revitalise old stuff, to try new stuff out, and do something that encompasses the range of skills that I've acquired over the last thirty years. This show's got my original music in it, as abrasive, industrial and dystopian as it is. I'll be using all my physical theatre training, and all of my knowledge of theatre to turn a dive bar into a unique experience. The Tote is one of my favourite places for live music.”HEAVY caught up with the man himself to peek behind the curtain some more...Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

A Bump School BackStory - A Common ThreadWelcome to this special edition of PSYCHOTIC BUMP SCHOOL's LIVE funk and soul musical escapade—a deeply personal sonic expedition threading ancestral echoes, cultural legacy, and unforgettable performances. These sets aren't just recordings—they're living testaments to the moments that made me fall in love with music, each artist forming a vital strand in the Common Thread that weaves through my personal soundscape, across geography, memory, and soul.No group has shaped my musical worldview more than The Isley Brothers. During their legendary 3 + 3 era—when Ernie and Marvin Isley along with brother-in-law Chris Jasper (rest in peace) joined their big brothers O'Kelly, Rudolph, and Ronald, they became a creative powerhouse. Writing, producing, and performing their own material, they blended funk, rock, and soul into a timeless eargasmic sound-piece. I once saw them at The Beverly Theater in West L.A., where Ernie, my all-time favorite guitarist, played with both precision and passion—his solos part anthem, part sermon. A later acoustic clip here reveals a softer, more intimate side of his artistry. It's widely known that Jimi Hendrix spent time with the Isley Brothers early in his career—even living in their home for a period, jamming on the family's living room couch while a young Ernie looked on. Therefore, the most jaw-dropping Isley moment I've ever witnessed came around 1990 during a rare Ernie Isley solo show. Mid-set, he picked up a left-handed guitar—despite being right-handed—and played it with flawless soul and dexterity. A whispered legend among die-hard fans, and I saw it firsthand! A deeply rare, fleeting moment of brilliance—a glimpse into the sacred lineage from Hendrix to Isley, from couch jam sessions to stages lit by legend. Now to Black Kennedy by August Greene—a powerful one-off collaboration between Common, Robert Glasper, Karriem Riggins, and Samora Pinderhughes (not pictured). I've seen Common live more than any other MC. His tribute to Dilla and Karriem (or “Reem”) on this track struck a chord. I once met Karriem at L.A.'s Do-Over party. Despite sharing stages with giants, he remembered my name and greeted me with the warmth, humility & respect of someone deeply rooted in Detroit's rich musical tradition-from the "D" to L.A. With the spirits of the late Dilla and Amp Fiddler in the mix, this set carries a joy that's truly uncommon. Lastly, Samora's understated vocals may seem minimal at first, but their honesty and simplicity carry quiet strength. Then there's Tweet—with a capital “T.” I've admired her for years & once spoke with her briefly after an interview with her guitarist Charlie Bereal. That moment truly stuck with me. Seeing her live revealed a whole new & surprising dimension: gritty, sultry, and unexpectedly fierce. Think Betty Davis meets Tina Turner—cheetah-smooth with gospel heat. A revelation! And finally, Erykah Badu—the high priestess of soul and queen of the unexpected. I once opened for her on New Year's Eve at the House of Blues but missed her set. This 2025 performance in her hometown of Dallas recorded during Black Music Month, felt like a gift. I reshaped it a bit—trimming the interludes to highlight her explosive musical energy. Funk, soul, jazz & hip-hop all converge in a set that proves, once again, that Badu doesn't just perform—she transmits. Beam her up!These are the moments that make live music sacred. Not just entertainment, but communion. Each set here reflects the throughline in my life—A Common Thread. I'm grateful to share it with you.

Summary of Arturo Marin's Transformation Journey: From Salesperson to Successful Leader Early Career Challenges Arturo Marin, the Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) of cast.ai, shares his remarkable transformation journey from being a talented salesperson to a successful leader. In the early stages of his career, Marin reflects on his time at SAP, where he was initially successful due to his "take-charge" personality. However, his inability to accept feedback and criticism from others led to a significant issue - his entire team quit. This critical moment forced Marin to realize the importance of adaptability and humility in leadership. Mentorship and Growth Marin's awakening was a turning point in his career. He met his first mentor, Bob Ranaldi, at PTC, who taught him the value of selling by emphasizing the importance of process, prioritizing transparency, and adapting to new challenges. Marin was initially hesitant to learn from Ranaldi but eventually developed the skills to lead and retain top talent, resulting in increased revenue. Marin's growth continued under the guidance of another mentor, Helio Samora, who instilled in him the responsibility that comes with leadership. Samora encouraged Marin to take on leadership roles, which ultimately led to his appointment as the director of Latin America. Leadership Roles and Success Marin's success in Latin America caught the attention of Jason Eubanks, who approached him to lead the Latin America team for Meraki, a Cisco acquisition. Despite initial hesitation, Marin took on the challenge and led the team to success. Throughout his journey, Marin credits his mentors for providing valuable guidance and support, which helped him evolve into a high-potential CRO. His mentors, including Helio and Bob, taught him the importance of following a process, prioritizing transparency, and adapting to new challenges. Key Takeaways and Insights Marin's story highlights several critical factors that contributed to his success in sales and leadership: 1. Mentorship: Marin emphasizes the importance of choosing leaders and mentors who can guide and mentor young salespeople, providing valuable advice and feedback. 2. Continuous Learning: Marin believes that being open to learning from others, asking for help, and surrounding themselves with people who are better than them have been critical to their success. 3. Adaptability: Marin's ability to adapt to new challenges and learn from his mistakes has been instrumental in his growth as a leader. 4. Diversity: Marin's experience with diverse mentors and leadership styles has taught him the value of embracing different approaches, which has greatly benefited his development as a leader. In conclusion, Arturo Marin's transformation journey from a talented salesperson to a successful leader serves as a testament to the power of mentorship, diversity, and continuous learning. His story provides valuable insights for those looking to build a successful career in sales and leadership.

What does it mean to celebrate freedom when all of us are not and may not ever experience this freedom that we speak of. The search for freedom is a physical, emotional, and spiritual endeavor that all too often is barricaded by a system that calls itself just. For the final episode of the season, I urge each one of you to listen, learn from and get involved with advocating for Keith LaMar's exoneration. As we many of us gather in celebration over Juneteenth, there is a man, like many who came before him and many who will come after, that awaits execution by the State of Ohio for a crime he did not commit. In today's episode you'll hear Keith call in from death row to share his truth and the dissonance between that reality and the one that the state would have you believe. In an effort for justice Keith reasoned with himself that he must tell his story to not only save himself but for those who will come after him. Along the way he has made many dear friends, one of which you'll meet today - Samora Pinderhughes. Samora is a brilliant musician whose talent was matched by the brilliance of Keith who too has an ear and a deep love for music. What blossomed from their meeting was intentional collaboration on Samora's 5-year long project, The Healing Project, in which Keith is now part of. This isn't an episode just focused on the atrocities surrounding Keith's case and current predicament; this is meant to showcase the wonderful harmony that is birthed when one companion on the outside and another on the inside step into each other's world and came together to create art. This episode is a celebration of artists, a recognition of the humanity of both artists in today's discussion and an appreciation for their contributions to the world of justice and music. To learn more about Keith LaMar's story, you can purchase his book Condemned. Also, make sure to follow and join the campaign Justice for Keith LaMar here on Instagram. All of Samora's music can be downloaded right from Apple Music. You can also check out his live performance with music from his album Grief and bonus song Process on Tiny Desk Concert powered by NPR Music. And to view his full performance of Transformation Suite click here. Be sure to also follow Samora on Instagram to stay connected to him and his work. You of course won't want to miss checking out the project that the now brothers created together as part of the Healing Project. Remember, the fight is not yet over - we do this until we're all free.
