Today, Labrador Morning hosted a province-wide broadcast commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We speak to Raymond Frogner, head of Archives for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, about acknowledging the day, what it means to be recognizing it, and the work of the NCTR. The Lockwood School in Cartwright was demolished one year ago this week. We hear from Kirk Lethbridge, whose mother attended as a child, to hear about the impact the school had on her. A resident of Sheshatshiu found that one of her late mother's crafts was at a museum in Ontario. Germaine Benuen tells us about her journey to track it down and see it. Photographer Eldred Allen joins us to talk about restarting his project to capture Rigolet's elders. Andrea Procter, author of "A Long Journey: Residential Schools in Labrador and Newfoundland," joins us to explain some of that history. We hear Annie Evans of Makkovik describing her experience of the residential school system, which is part of the Healing and Commemoration Project now archived at the Rooms in St. John's. The English school district has a new guide that aims to help educators and students learn about residential schools. Shane Welcher, Provincial Director for Programs in Indigenous Education, tells us about it. Indigenous youth say today is as much about the future as it is our dark history. Holly Tait and Robert Leamon join us to talk about the day. We learn about an edu-kit The Rooms has produced to help students learn about residential schools in our province. Mark Ferguson joins us. Before his death, Gord Downie used his platform to profile the importance of reconciliation with Indigenous people in Canada. We speak Bob Watts, the chair of the foundation, to talk about how we all can help continue the conversation. As we reflect on the impact of residential schools, and the struggles Indigenous people still face, we speak with Calvin White, a Mi'kmaq elder with the Flat Bay Band, and Chief Mi'sel Joe of the Miawpukek First Nation about how to move forward. Canada's Catholic Bishops say they'll give thirty million dollars to help survivors of the residential school system. We get reaction from Cora McGuire-Cyrette, executive director of the Ontario Native Women's Association. Finally, a new CBC documentary airs tonight examining the legacy of residential schools and how Indigenous people are making positive change on their own terms. The CBC's Stephanie Cram tells us about it.

She might still be living alone in the woods if she hadn't found support.  That's what podcast guest Annie Evans says, and host Rebeccah Silence agrees. In their discussion about the concepts of Breakdown and Breakthrough, Annie describes the feeling of being sad, stuck, and alone. She remembers a time when good days felt like an anomaly.    After doing the work she did with Rebeccah, she reinvented herself and reclaimed life on her own terms.  She admits it was scary and took a long time. But, at the same time, the more she did to move forward to Breakthrough, the more she was happy. That would spur her on!  Even though Annie's marriage was on the rocks, she knew she could not rush to dissolving it.  It was important to her to have a trauma-free divorce, and she knew she had to do things on her own timeline.  She kept moving forward, listening to herself and having faith in the outcome.  She's learned that it's about changing and pivoting when you realize you're not living the life you want. Setting solid boundaries is important… If it's not a Hell Yeah!, it's a NO.  It has to be a WIN/WIN for both parties.  It comes down to listening to your inner voice and doing the work. Because she avoided listening to herself, she felt like she remained in Breakdown for years… sad and hopeless.  Since she's learned to welcome the Breakdown and developed the ability to work through them quickly, she's also living her best life.  Happy in love, running her business, and living on the farm.  Her advice for those listening… DO NOT SETTLE!  If you'd like to learn more about Annie Evans, visit her website. We also speak with Annie Evans of Makkovik, who was one of those who shared her account of residential schools back in April of 2018. The family of the late Ryan (Ernie) Nuke of Sheshatshiu says it's been a long nine months of waiting as the RCMP have finally laid charges in the hit-and-run that led to his death last August. Herman Montague, Nuke's uncle, shared what these charges mean for the family. The price of iron ore has hit an all-time high....Paul Gray is the vice-president of iron ore markets for Wood Mackenzie, a global researching company, and he discusses what he is seeing and how Labrador fits into that. What do high oil prices look like right here in the province? Michael Furlong, president of USW Local 5795, says it's an exciting time in the industry. This construction season in Makkovik will see a continuation of a 20- lot subdivision plus a new playground. AngajukKak Barry Andersen speaks to the plans. Meanwhile Postville Inuit Community Government is working to keep its landfill free of recyclables by recently voting on a recycling program. We reached out to AngajukKâk Glenn Sheppard. Finally, mass vaccination and home testing to slow and hopefully stop the spread of Covid-19? To tell us what's available and how this might work, Dr. Peter Lin chats with us!

September is National Newborn Awareness Month:  Passionate about helping families find good quality healthcare that transcends cultural and language barriers, Annie Evans works to creatively engage different stakeholders in Expecting Health's programs through outreach efforts, development of practical tools, and monitoring of impact for quality improvement. She focuses mostly on our online engagement initiatives from both a technical and conceptual perspective.    Annie currently manages the Newborn Screening Family Education Program which created Navigate Newborn Screening, the free, online educational module for families.  Annie received a Master of Public Health from George Washington University.   Susan Mays lives in Mukilteo Washington with her husband and two children. She is a passionate advocate for Newborn Screening after their life got flipped upside down when her oldest daughter was born with a rare metabolic disorder. After an uneventful pregnancy and delivery they couldn't wait to start their lives as a family of 3. Then 2 weeks later came the call which would change lives forever.  Indie, Susan's daughter, had tested positive for a life threatening metabolic disorder which was thankfully caught during a routine public health program called Newborn Screening. Without this early detection and diagnosis, Indie's condition is lethal. Because of it, treatment and management was able to be started right away and Indie is having the opportunity to grow and develop typically. Susan believes every baby born in the U.S. deserves this same privilege and because of this she advocates for NBS in a variety of ways. One of which is volunteering with the Expecting Health team and is an ambassador for the Navigate Newborn Screening Program.    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Helpful Links:    Baby's First Test Expecting Health Navigate Newborn Screening Oklahoma Family Network Expecting Health Contact: info@expectinghealth.org

Overcoming Life Challenges and Difficult Times-Time for a Fall Friendship Cleanse-Annie Evans Overcoming Obstacles Motivational Life Challenges and Difficult Times https://setyoursails.com/ https://www.intrinsicmotivation.life/ We all have them – friends (or family) who do nothing but criticize, complain about anything and everything, and make us feel small and undeserving. Well, it's time to call them out on their negativity, start a dialog and if that doesn't work, take a break or walk away from that relationship. Annie Evans believes that if you don't deal with them, there's a really good chance you'll turn out just like them. Evans personally knows how negativity breeds negativity. Combined with some serious life challenges, she went on her own downward spiral. Being raised by a severely mentally-ill mom and losing two life partners is just the tip of the iceberg. Evans will share her startling story, and help listeners learn real strategies to change their mindsets, interactions and take charge of their attitudes. #overcominglifechallenges #overcominglifechallengesquotes #overcominglifechallengesessay #overcominglifechallengesanddifficulttimes #overcominglifechallengessermon #overcominglifechallengespoems --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/intrinsic-motivation/support
