Are you struggling with being perceived as 'too nice' when you want to be seen as a strong leader? This interview with Fran Hauser is a must-listen. Fran, the author of The Myth of the Nice Girl, brings a wealth of experience as a media executive, advocate for women and girls, and an investor in over 30 female-led companies. She's a best-selling author, speaker, and a truly wise and genuine person.  She frequents conferences and organizations, empowering women to build fulfilling careers without compromising their authenticity. Our discussion dives into crucial topics such as overcoming the urge to please everyone, increasing self-awareness, and self-advocacy. Fran's insights shine a light on how to maintain our true selves, stay kind, and emerge as respected leaders.   Episode Highlights:  [02:06] Being nice has been helpful to Fran's career. She could negotiate with real win-win outcomes. She was able to show empathy, build relationships, and deep connections. [04:07] She also had young women coming to her and asking how she could be so nice yet successful. [04:53] Fran became more comfortable with who she was and was able to list how being nice helped her business. [05:30] Once she became more established, people stopped saying she was too nice.  [06:16] There are more corporate cultures that encourage employees to show up in a way that's aligned with their values. There's more diversity, and there's a huge difference in corporate culture today. [07:13] Fran shares how she tried to get away from the nice girl image early in her career. She took bad advice and went over someone's head to get something done, and it damaged her relationship with this person. [08:43] It felt awful to hurt her feelings. That's when I learned that I really messed up, and I'm not going to try to be a person that I'm not. [09:30] As a leader, you can set the tone and work in an environment of respect even if you don't agree. It's more difficult when you're a team member and not the leader. [12:06] People pleasing is having no boundaries and saying yes to everything. Check in with yourself and ask if you're saying yes because this is aligned with your priorities. Am I saying yes, because I feel bad saying no? It's an important distinction. [14:45] Advocating for yourself doesn't mean that you're not a nice person. You can ask for more money or to be put on that high-profile project.  [15:43] People-pleasing can show up in many different ways. Fran shares an experience from her early career where she learned the importance of self-awareness and learning from her mistakes. [17:59] Is being a nice girl a superpower? Being kind, empathetic, and warm enables you to connect more deeply and build stronger relationships. [18:43] You need to set boundaries and not let people walk all over you or take advantage of you. [20:27] The importance of getting feedback from trusted friends.  [21:56] Fran's head and heart are with helping aspiring authors get their books out.  [24:08] You deserve to have a great week. Be clear on what really matters to you. Where do you want to spend your time? What are your priorities? How can you set healthy boundaries around those? As women in powerful leadership positions, we need to find a leadership style that is true to us but is still effective and brings people together. This can be a tricky balance, figuring out how to be kind and empathetic without being a push-over, and exuding strength and authority without being domineering. So how do we find that balance? Answering this question and sharing her story is our guest, Fran Hauser.  Fran is passionate about leveling the playing field for women. With more than 20 years in the corporate media world, Fran now does her mission driven work through investing, writing, and speaking. As an investor, Fran has invested in over 30 female-founded companies across different industries. She is also the best-selling author of The Myth of the Nice Girl and Embrace the Work, Love Your Career.  “I love the multi-hyphenate part of how I would describe myself because I am in all these different things, but at the end of the day I just feel like I'm helping people.” -Fran Hauser  With a career that started in public accounting for The Big Five, becoming an all-star media executive, and then an author and investor, Fran changed industries and pivoted her trajectory multiple times, but here are the common threads she kept on seeing throughout her experience:  Amazing things happen when women come together and help each other.  There is nothing that could replace in-person interactions and real-life communities.  It's possible for women to lead with strength, but still come from a place of kindness.  “You don't have to choose between a quality like strength and a quality like kindness. You can be both kind and strong.” -Fran Hauser  While in her corporate leadership positions, Fran has learned how to balance leading with strength and kindness. She first shared this in her blog article Nice Girls Finish First which instantly went viral, and the outpouring of responses convinced her to write her first book.  To hear the full story of Fran's journey, listen to this episode. Welcome to season 2, episode 45 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Fran Hauser, best-selling author and angel investor. Fran is passionate about leveling the playing field for women. She does this through her investing, writing and speaking. Fran has invested in over 30 female-founded companies across consumer tech, CPG, media, publishing, and wellness.Fran is the best-selling author of The Myth of the Nice Girl: Achieving a Career You Love Without Becoming a Person You Hate. The book has been translated into six languages and was named "Best Business Book of the Year 2018" by Audible. Fran's new book, Embrace the Work, Love Your Career is quickly becoming the go-to for women seeking more joy and fulfillment in their career. Fran is on a mission to help women build careers they love while staying true to themselves. Before becoming an angel investor and author, Fran worked 15 years in media, where she rose through the ranks at Time Inc. to President of Digital. People.com was a website that Fran and a few others built up to over 100 people working on. She worked with founders from organizations like Rent the Runway and many more. She talks about how her work at Time Inc. led her to being an angel investor. A friend of Fran's called her out on how many times she said "sorry". We tend to apologize for things we have no control over or as just as a way of making conversation. There is a special program that Fran used called "Just Not Sorry" created by a female engineer to see how many times she was saying "sorry" in her emails. This Google plug-in has been downloaded over half a million times.  Another message Fran shares is, before you say "yes" to something ask yourself if you are saying yes because you feel bad saying no. Is what you are saying yes to aligned with your priorities or does it bring you joy? Being very intentional is important. Take a moment to decide why you are saying "yes". Fran shares that our time and energy is our greatest resource. If you are going to say no, keep it short and sweet. Listen in to hear more of what Fran shares as her messaging about balance, career, how to become an author and more is enlightening. Also, take a listen to the footprint she is creating now that she wants to leave behind.Next week my guest is Jes Ruzic. Jes is a Certified Personal Stylist and Image Consultant. Her commitment to sustainability and passion for textile recycling has led her to partner with organizations such as Dress for Sucess, Soles 4 Souls, and H&M. Look at your calendar from the last few months and see what put a smile on your face. What about those experiences can you do more of? ~ Fran Hauser Finding our Brilliance. It's not always easy. Our Brilliance and the things that light us up don't always jump out and say, “Here I am! This is what you're supposed to be doing!” But our friend, Fran Hauser, author, angel investor and the queen of kindness in the workplace, offers a simple strategy to determine where our Brilliance may lie and how we can get more of it in our lives.  By looking back through our calendars and intentionally evaluating our experiences we can get a sense of what makes us happy, as well as where we shine. Too often, we treat life as a list of things we have to “get done,” checking things off and then filing them away, rarely to be thought of as anything other than finished. But when we take the time to look at our experiences and what about them fueled–or didn't–us, we can get a sense of where we should be putting our efforts to get the most our ot life–and out of ourselves. Brilliance is within us all; sometimes we just need a little help finding it. Fran offers more of her Brilliance in her new book, Embrace the Work, Love Your Career, a workbook that guides you through realizing career goals with “clarity, intention and confidence.” Brilliant!!! Tune in to hear more from Fran on this week's episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast.  Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! XO, Kristin and Mary Fran

When Fran Hauser was just 6 years old, she would prepare the invoices for her father's landscaping business. Her mother was a seamstress and had a tailoring shop where she spent a lot of time. The oldest of four children, she would provide translation for her parents, both small business owners, as neither of them spoke English. Fran observed the way her parents warmly engaged their customers using nonverbal communication and gives them credit for shaping her own development as a compassionate leader. Fran studied public accounting in college and climbed the corporate ladder in finance roles, eventually moving into leadership roles in the media industry. Today, she is a startup investor, long-time media executive, author, and champion of women and girls. Through her investing, writing, and speaking, Fran works to level the playing field for women. Her list of accomplishments is impressive but as you'll hear, what's most impressive is how she's navigated her career while staying true to herself and inspiring others to do the same.  Fran has invested in over 30 female-founded companies, written two books to help women realize their full career potential, and delivered over 200 talks. Much of her current work is informed by the 20 years she spent in corporate as both a C-suite executive and a mentor to hundreds of women. Fran's new book, an engaging workbook,  Embrace the Work, Love Your Career is quickly becoming the go-to resource for women seeking more joy and fulfillment in their careers. In fact, I found it so compelling that I included it in the resources section of my book. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Fran's journey: Fran's first book, The Myth of the Nice Girl: Achieving a Career You Love Without Becoming a Person You Hate has been translated into six languages and was named “Best Business Book of the Year, 2018” by Audible. She suggests that when you are feeling hesitant to engage in the networking process just think of one person you believe is really interesting and reach out to that individual to get started. Julie and Casey chat with author, speaker, and angel investor Fran Hauser (author of Embrace the Work, Love Your Career and Audible's Best Business Book of 2018, The Myth of the Nice Girl) about building relationships, rejecting the idea that being nice makes you weak, how to stand up for yourself, the difference between "nice" and "people pleaser", and why founders need to take care of themselves.   Thank you to our Season 3 sponsor, Armoire! If you're ready to try a new look, Armoire's high-end clothing rental service (full of amazing women-owned brands) will hook you up! For 50% off your first month's rental + a free item, go to http://armoire.style/voiceis and use VOICEIS in the referral box!   TOP TAKEAWAYS: Being successful in business is all about relationships You don't have to choose between being nice and being strong. If you're a founder/entrepreneur, are you jumping ahead to business model, marketing, partnerships, etc. before making sure you have an awesome product that consumers are delighted by?  You're skipping the most important step. Taking a breath, taking the time and energy to care for yourself and others makes the WORK better.  Compassion for ourselves and for other people makes us more productive, not less, and we need to bring more of it into our professional lives. You don't need to be the smartest kid in fifth grade (i.e. have all the answers all by yourself).  Build out your community and your network. Nice is a superpower - its "evil twin" is people-pleasing. Know the difference, and know when to stand up for yourself. Mini-Lesson: How to embrace your "toos".
