This Is Not Happening - An Album Of The Month Podcast

We dispense with the niceties this month and discuss an album where we have quite differing opinions. Welcome to Episode 56 of This is Not Happening (TINH), an Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'.  We pick a theme and each pick a song that represents that theme. We judge the selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?In Part 1, David, resident 'Pop Being', has the pleasure of presenting an album from one of his genuine musical obsessions. 'Saya' the latest release by Saya Gray.In Part 2, following the theme of 'Saya', break-up and heart-break, we play Spin It or Bin It with the simple theme of 'Heart Break' with no additional rules!                                     ----- Part 1 | Saya Gray | 'Saya' -----To say David is a Saya Gray fan is something of an understatement. He has been championing the strange sounds of Saya for nearly 3 years. Nobody's really sure if this is her debut album or not but that's not important. It is an album and an artist that has divided opinion on the pod. 2 of us love this album, 1 of us doesn't, and 1 of us has had such a busy month at work that we have no idea what they think pre-recording.Regardless of how we feel about this album individually, we all think it's an album that deserves a listen. Probably not but it definitely feels like it when you start looking for your favourite tracks that embrace the subject. We've chosen a track each that may not be what you expect.Guy chose 'A Little Respect' by Erasure. David chose 'Already Dead' by Beck. Joey chose 'It's Not Right, But It's Okay' by Whitney Houston. Nolan chose 'Shiver' by Lucy Rose. Here is a link to our 16 track playlist of religion-inspired tracks - with the first 4 tracks being our picks for this month. We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

The awesome albums keep coming early in 2025 and we'd love to introduce on to you today. Welcome to Episode 55 of This is Not Happening (TINH), an Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'.  We pick a theme and each pick a song that represents that theme. We judge the selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?In Part 1, Nolan, resident Hip Hop head stays true to form and brings a new album from a 47 year old artist! Brother Ali's 'Satisfied Soul'. In Part 2, following Brother Ali's exploration of peace, love, faith and religion, our Spin It or Bin It, our theme this month is 'Religion'.                               ----- Part 1 | Brother Ali | Satisfied Soul -----Nolan has been trying to introduce Brother Ali to us for years but ... there's a lot of music and not a lot of time. Previous album releases have not lined up with podcasts but this time they did! Satisfied Soul is an album that is worth any music fan spending some time with. It is not a niche hip hop album for niche hip hop fans. It's soul music. It's pop music. It's Hip Hop. It's intelligent. It's massively thought provoking and massively accessible to anyone with an open mind and an open ear. Get on it. Please.Listen to the albumhere. This track is not from this album ... but too good not to share Cadillac.Nolan's awesome 'Intro to Brother Ali' playlist can be found here.Buy some stuff here.                                            ----- Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'Religion' -----Popular music and religion have been uncomfortable bedfellows since ... forever. We agreed to each select a track that 'tackles' the theme of religion in any way shape or form;Joey chose Tennessee by Arrested Development.David chose Dear God by XTC.Guy chose Stand on the Wordby The Joubert Singers.Nolan chose Name of God by Mustafa. Here is a link to a this 4 track playlist. We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'.  This is where we pick a theme and each select a song that represents that theme. We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?This month, in Part 1, Guy hosts an interesting discussion on Father John Misty's (FJM) latest album, Mahashmashana. 50% of the Pod love FJM, 50% don't!In Part 2, Spin It or Bin It, our theme this month is 'Location, Location, Location', or 'songs about places' and it's a belter!Part 1 | Father John Misty | MahashmashanaWe often review artists that we all love. This month this is not the case. 2 of us love FJM, one of us gets very angry when listening to FJM and one of us doesn't really have an opinion. Can this album keep the fans happy and win over the angry and the non-plussed?Given the above, this is a surprisingly well mannered and coherent conversation about FJMs latest album. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'.  This is where we pick a theme and each select a song that represents that theme. We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?This month, in Part 1, Joey sits in the middle of a 'divisive discussion'  focused on Caribou's new album Honey. One of us think it's some of the best of Caribou's work, one of us thinks it's much less than that.In Part 2, Spin It or Bin It, our theme this month is 'Basslines', for once we stipulated no other rules.Part 1 | Caribou | 'Honey'We all love Caribou. There are few artists that sit in the centre of the TINH venn diagram, but Caribou is one of them.  However, we all have different favourite Caribou albums and therefore have different expectations and hopes when it comes to a new Caribou album. The debate is fierce. We cover many topics including how to be fair when an artist produces something we weren't expecting, can you remove the bias of your disappointment and critique the album without bias? In Part 2, Spin It or Bin It, we return for our quarterly visit to the theme of 'New Music' ... anything released since August 1st.Part 1 | Nilifur Yanya | My Method ActorThis is the third full length studio album from Yanya. She is a super interesting artist blending soul, jazz, indie and a bunch of other sounds and influences in there. This album is something of a departure for her following her last 2 albums that perhaps embraced the indie side of her influences. This album is a super smart melding of all of her influences, definitely leaning more towards the soul and jazz side of her music. We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?This month, in Part 1, Guy has picked the an album that could not be further from last month's Charli XCX outing. He's also picked the best named TINH AOTM ever, Linda Thompson's Proxy Music. In Part 2, Spin It or Bin It, the theme is simple ... 'Long Songs' no explanation of the theme required here apart from Guy's completely arbitrary suggestion that all tracks had to be over 8 minutes. Part 1 | Linda Thompson | Proxy MusicEnglish Folk musician legend Linda Thompson has lived enough life for several people. The good, the bad and everything in between. She's now a 72 year old songwriter force who has sadly lost her super-power to sing ... so she's written songs for other artists to perform. The album is an eclectic collection of songs and collaborators pulled together through the concept of performing through a proxy. The critics love it with a combined Metacritic Score of 86. There's a lot of love on the pod but not without a few reservations along the way.Listen to the album here.Watch Linda on Jools Holland back in 2011 videos here.Guy references a couple of articles in his introduction and conversation they're worth a look and can be found here and here.Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | Long Songs. We love a long song. Even our resident (but absent on this episode) pop being loves a long song. Guy defines a long song as anything over 8 mins, who are we to argue with that kind of logic. So them's the rules. Who bought what to the table to judge in Spin It or Bin It?Guy chose ''Black Star' by David Bowie.Nolan chose'Dance Yrself Clean'   by LCD SoundsystemJoey chose 'Menneskekollectivet' by Lost GirlsSee you on Episode 49 ... We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?This month, in Part 2, Joey has picked the most obvious choice for 4 middle aged dads, Brat by Charli XCX. It is impossible to ignore the critical response for this album so we all dive headfirst into the first Charli album that any of us has experienced. And it's a belter ... but I am pretty sure it will also divide opinion. This month, in Part 2, Spin It or Bin It, the theme is simple ... 'New Music' (tracks released since 01.05.24. However, one of us picked a 49 year old track. Take a listen to hear him justify this decision.Part 1 | Charli XCX | BratWith a whopping 95% score on Metacritic, this album has had a massive impact from critics right across the music press's broad spectrum of publications. It's 15 tracks with an average length well under 3 minutes. And it has some serious weight behind a savage combo of pure pop punches. But there is WAY WAY more to it that sugar-coated pop prettiness as we get stuck right into.Listen to the album here.Watch some videos here.Want to know what Charli means to the world of pop this podcast is gold.Want to know more about the making of the album, listen to this one. And read this great article with Charli. Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | New TracksEvery 3 months (or so) we pick to do 'New Tracks' which we define as being released 2-3 months before our podcast record date (01.05.24). We've got 4 interesting tracks this month. We've got two very different female sole artist indie tracks, one undeniable piece of piano driven, laid back housey, post-club loveliness and of course something French from David.David chose 'Le Sud (Latin Version)' by Nino Ferrer, Guts, Patchworks.Guy chose 'Method Actor' by Nilifur Yanya.Nolan chose 'God gave me feet for dancing' by Ezra Collective fear. Nolan and I (Joey) think this is one of 2023's underrated albums and definitely a hidden hip hop gem. David is missing this month so we only have to convince Guy! In Part 2, the Spin it or Bin it theme is 'Technology' where we all chose a track that we think fits the theme and ask the others 'Spin It or Bin It'.Part 1 | Aesop Rock | Integrated Tech Solutions. This one's special (in my opinion). Nolan has always tried to sell Aesop Rock to me but there's so much music and so little time that I never quite got it. That changed in the Autumn when Mindful Solutionism, the lead single from this album dropped. I chose it as a Spin It or Bin It track and won that month. There's another 17 tracks on this album. We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'? This month, we get stuck in Noname's latest release  'Sundial' in Part 1. It's a short album but there's a lot to talk about. In Part 2, the Spin it or Bin it theme is 'New Music' where we all chose a track released since 1st August 2023 and present it for judgement.Part 1 | Noname | SundialIt's Nolan's choice this month and he's chosen the new album from Noname, 'Sundial'. It's an interesting, uncompromising album with a challenging cover from an unapologetic, controversial artist.  It's only 30 mins long but packs a big punch and brings a lot to the party! Check out Noname's Insta here  and her Twitter here Listen to the album here or here Here are some links to check out if you want a little more backgroundCheck out the album's metacritic page here Check out a few opinions on some Noname controversy here Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | New TracksIt's a simple theme this month. We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'? This month, we get pretty emotional about Julie Byrne's latest album 'The Greater Wings' in Part 1. In Part 2, Spin it or Bin it theme is 'no human sounds'. All will be explained ...Part 1 | Julie Byrne | The Greater WingsIt's Joey's choice this month and for the 2nd time in This is Not Happening history he chooses a beautiful album by Julie Byrne. We're in the indie-folk-ambience hinterlands from a stylist perspective. From an emotional perspective we're right at the intersection of beauty, grief, loss, hope and reflection. We talk about what this album is, how there's more than one way to experience it, our favourite tracks and what it means to us.Visit Julie Byrne's website hereListen to this stunning album hereBuy some of Julie's stuff hereHere are a few links for some background; The Metacritic page for 'The Greater Wings'Marty's Music Talk interview with Julie is here Another interview with Julie, this time on KEXP PodcastsPart 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'No Human Sounds'This one was way harder than it sounded at first. The theme this month is 'No Human Sounds'. We started with no vocals, then decided no human sounds at all, then we added that it couldn't be 'dance music'. Joey suggested we define 'dance music', he got laughed at ... then we got into an argument about all of Guys choices being dance music. We all chose a track that fits the theme then ask the others a simple question 'spin it or bin it?'Guy chose Vision of Self by Rival ConsolesNolan chose Time is the Enemy by QuanticJoey chose Transitions by Beastie BoysDavid chose Speed of Life by David BowieIn order to select our tracks we shortlist 4 each and create a 16 track playlist that can be found here.*** Enjoy the Episode ***We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

Creep Show are a 'Super Group' of John Grant, Phil Winter (Tuung), Stephen Mallinder (Caberet Volataire) and Ben 'Benge' Edwards (Prolific Producer). This is their 2nd album as a collective and they channel the dark, the dystopian and the hopeless across 9 tracks and 40-ish minutes of music. There are elements of each individuals previous work but there is distinctive sound that the band capture themselves. Listen to the album here or some tracks here.Visit their Bandcamp here. Here are few links to provide a little background.Read a very short interview with Creep Show here and another here. Watch Creep Show play 'Yawning Abyss' live at latitude here. The Metacritic album page can be found here.Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It? | Super-ProducersWhat is a Super-Producer? It turns out we all have a different definition, no surprises there I guess! But collectively we kind of agree that a Super-Producer is (i) successful (ii) prolific (iii) has had a significant impact on music (iv) spans numerous artists and perhaps genres.David chose 'I never loved a man' by Aretha Franklin (Jerry Wexler)Joey chose 'Gamma Ray' by Beck (Dangermouse)Nolan chose 'NY State of Mind' by Nas (DJ Premier)Guy chose 'Weird Fish / Arpeggi' by Radiohead (Nigel Godrich)In order to select our tracks we shortlist 4 each and create a 16 track playlist that can be found here.*** Enjoy the Episode ***We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

Part 1 | Album of the Month | Durand Jones | Wait Til I Get Over It's David's choice this month and he's chosen an album by and artist that none of us have any history with or knowledge of. The album is very much a soul album in every way that you could possibly define that word.  If you want it to be, it's a very easy to listen to soul album that fits nicely into the sun we've been enjoying. In 1998, Auburn Network, Inc. launched it's signature local program, Auburn/Opelika This Morning, with the mission of being the area's unquestioned radio leader for local news, weather, information, and interviews- and the show has achieved just that. The show has been recognized by the Alabama Broadcasters' Association nine times as being the best small market radio talk show in the state. Additionally, NewsTalk WANI has been recognized as Alabama's Station of the Year on two separate occasions, the only station in the history of the state to ever accomplish that feat. The first host of Auburn/Opelika This Morning in 1998 was Jerry Katz, followed by Jerry Potter, the late Rod Bramblett, current voice of the Auburn Tigers Andy Burcham, Bob Wooddy, and Zac Blackerby. Beginning in 2022, which is the 25th year of the show, Ben Taylor became the 7th host of Auburn/Opelika This Morning. Auburn-Opelika This Morning is quite simply the most informative radio show in Lee County. The ABBY Award Winning Show airs from 6:00-9:00 weekday mornings and includes local and national news, sports, weather, local event coverage, special features, and live in-studio guests. AOTM provides the only local newscast in Lee County airing at the top-of-the-hour, following Fox News, as well as at the bottom of each hour. No doubt you know how this works by now...team members take turns picking their favorite album from a given month and for August 2021, it was a shoe in for Deafheaven's Infinite Granite (Sargent House) across the board. And, while no one on staff disagreed, not everyone was on the exact same page. Since 2010, Deafheaven have yet to make the same album twice or even close to the same album. The way they transition from black metal to shoegaze has made them critical darlings of a controversy that can never quite get its controversy correct. And now that they've gone full on shoegaze, the internet will never be the same. So it seems. The gang covers Infinite Granite and just how different it is as well as how much it rules, the fact that this might well be their "Opeth" moment, lyrics and how good George Clarke is in writing them as well as their impact over the years with certain team members, spooky season, a huge set of birthdays, and, as always, what else tripped our triggers during the month of August 2021 which features lengthy segments on both BTBAM's Colors II and WITTR's Primordial Arcana, obviously. No doubt you know how this works by now...team members take turns picking their favorite album from a given month and for July 2021, Cat (Hera) yelled the loudest over Year Of No Light's Consolamentum (Pelagic Records).  And, based on their heavy history, no one on staff disagreed. Since 2001, Year Of No Light have been churning out some of the heaviest post-metal by way of sludge, doom, and drone anywhere and this release finds them at their most vulnerable yet heaviest of the bunch in their discography. It's been said that any band choosing to go the instrumental route better have plenty of meat to make a statement and this band has the whole damn cow on the grill. The gang covers Consolamentum and how it stacks up to their past while standing completely on its own, comparisons to like minded bands and how Year Of No Light are 100% unique, how Hera's virtual Roadburn experience colored this pick as well as how this one fits in her spiritual tear as of late and the color she sees when listening to the album, new homes for certain staff, the relentless heat, branching out with different genres of music due to the pandemic, whether to move to the West Coast or not, Egypt and our resident Egyptologist, and, as always, what else tripped our triggers during the month of July 2021. So, do have a pen and paper on hand. All this and so much more as we dive head first into our seventh AOTM for 2021!  So jump in and get an earful!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

You know how this works...team members take turn picking their favorite each month and this month was technically a landslide between the 9C members joining and the others not able to due to life and whatever else got in the way. De Doorn from Amenra is the band's fifth full length and first for new label Relapse Records who scooped them up on the strength of their discography, and what a strong discography it is! The fact that this is only their fifth full length misses the fact that they've put out six volumes of their out-of-body-religious experience Mass series and all the one-offs, splits, and EP's that are just as powerful. Amenra are all about the experience and each and every effort speaks volumes to how much they put into their music and to see them live is truly an otherworldy experience. The gang covers De Doorn and how this album stacks up to their previous works and how much of an impact the spoken word approach (in their native language) makes, the Church of Ra and its collective, and correct pronunciation of the band name. Following that is a "what else tripped our triggers" in June on the metal landscape which features several albums you'll want to take note of.All this and so much more as we dive head first into our sixth AOTM for 2021!  So jump in and get an earful!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

You know how this works...team members take turn picking their favorite each month and As the Morning Dawns We Close Our Eyes (Prosthetic Records) was Vincent's pick. He had two reasons for doing so; one because it's up his alley and the other...you'll have to listen in to find out. The gang covers a slew of different angles and takes on the album, compares it to previous releases and attempts to get Buke up to speed on it as well as this genre crossroad.  They also cover the slow maturation that An Autumn For Crippled Children has experienced since forming in 2009. Following that is a "what else tripped our triggers" in May section that prominently features the latest from Panopticon and several others worth taking note of. All this and so much more as we dive head first into our fifth AOTM for 2021!  So jump in and get an earful!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

You know how this works...team members take turns picking their favorite album of the month and In Transmission (Metal Blade Records and Blacklight Media) was Ian's pick. This album was pretty much an instant hit, all the way around the back office, as soon as Ian announced it and it has only grown closer and closer to the heart as time has passed. It's an incredibly vicious album but with a deeply emotional soul to it through hardcore, sludge, a touch of punk, and an amazing vocalist that casts a huge presence. There's plenty of back and forth on just how good this album is, the dual label release, Capra's energy and insane talent throughout, and whether anyone can actually pick just one favorite track. Following that is a roundhouse of "what else tripped our triggers in April" and a wide array of personal achievements since our last album pick. All this and so much more as we dive head first into our fourth AOTM for 2021!  So jump in and get an earful!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

You know how this works...team members take turns picking their favorite album of the month and Through the Gate Eternal (Boris Records) was Josh's pick. This album fast became a favorite due to its blistering blackened thrash and its self awareness as well as its devilishly on point song titles and nods to the old guard of metal. There's plenty of back and forth on how this album forces involuntary reactions, the South Carolina tie in to Josh, Demiser's energy and insane talent throughout, past points of reference for everyone in the discussion and whether anyone can pick a favorite track. You know how this works...team members take turns picking the AOTM, and this month technically was a group pick but Vince screamed the loudest over The Thule Grimoires (Ván Records) as soon as it hit our inbox and, as you'll hear, is also The Ruins of Beverast's biggest fan. However, all is not in balance in the House of 9C, as there's plenty of back and forth on the vocals and how different the band has sounded over the years.  One team member didn't even get to the vocals, so there's that. There's a lot of coffee talk, noodles and catfish (you'll have to listen in and figure that one out), the Martinek brothers sparring, and an in depth discussion on Vide, the latest from Emptiness, during the "what else tripped our triggers in February" section. All this and so much more as we dive head first into our second AOTM for 2021!  So jump in and get an earful!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
