If modems are a commodity why did Apple just pay $1B to acquire one? Apple's acquisition of Intel's modem business is not only a bargain cost-wise but a great deal for Apple AND Intel from a focus and control perspective. Apple gains 2,200 high-end engineers ready to take modems to the next level, control over a key component in its iPhone products, and over 17,000 wireless patents, while Intel sheds a product and development line that was an increasingly unprofitable distraction. A predictable fallout of the Apple-Qualcomm litigation settlement, we're surprised it too them this long to pull it off. Apple has a long history of bringing technology in-house, particularly when the availability (or lack of) becomes a risk to its operational delivery, if cost control can improve margins, or if the technology needs to be embedded into other components, rather than just remain a discrete component. Modems fit all three criteria. The question now becomes how, or when, might Apple leverage this new skillset into its broader product lines, from wearables to healthcare and perhaps the automotive/infotainment market? Tech giant Apple and telecommunications equipment company Qualcomm have ended their long-running legal disputes. For years, Apple had purchased Qualcomm's chips for the tech giant's mobile devices. However, in 2017, Apple accused the chipmaker of overcharging. According to Apple, Qualcomm took advantage of its capacity as one of the few suppliers for cellular technology. The tech giant claimed that Qualcomm placed high prices on its modem chips, which enable phones to connect to mobile networks. Qualcomm denied the accusation and fired back with a lawsuit, alleging that Apple breached the contract by withholding payment. Apple and Qualcomm continued suing each other for two years over various allegations. One allegation was of Qualcomm accusing Apple of sharing confidential information with the chipmaker's rival, Intel. Intel became Apple's chip supplier when the legal disputes began. After the two-year legal battle, the two companies announced their settlement. A press release published in April said that the settlement included an undisclosed amount of payment that Apple made to Qualcomm. Both parties agreed to drop all legal actions and closed a six-year licensing agreement, which will guarantee the launch of Apple's first 5G iPhone in 2020. The agreement entails that Qualcomm will once again become Apple's supplier of chips. The Apple-Qualcomm settlement has not only ended one of the biggest legal conflicts in the technology industry but has also tipped the scales of power in Qualcomm's rivalry with Intel. Intel announced its exit from the production of 5G chips for smartphones following the settlement's release. An Intel representative said that the company did not see viable income in producing 5G chips due to the terms of the Apple-Qualcomm agreement.

Apple and Qualcomm were set to do battle in a San Diego courtroom earlier this month to sort out a years-long dispute over the value of Qualcomm’s cellular communications technology. Then after a nine-person jury was sworn in, the two companies abruptly settled. How this impacts the mobile industry, and a series of related case, is yet unknown.
With Jamie gallivanting around China he is replaced, appropriately enough, by Telecoms.com’s Wei Shi, for this episode. Wei starts by taking us though some research into the ownership of Huawei and what the significance of it might be. Scott then introduces an overview of the litigation between Apple and Qualcomm that recently came to a conclusion, while Iain reflects on a recent trip to Paris to hear Orange and its partners talk about commercialising 5G.

So much news, cadets ... blacking ... out! The Apple vs Qualcomm trial and war is over, and Charles and Mike go over the chain of events and the deal they worked out, as well as Intel's exit (stage left) from the 5G modem business. As usual, Facebook has to own up to yet another security breach, this time affecting scores of millions of Instagram users -- so this seems like the perfect time to announce their own voice spy -- we mean, assistant, right? Amazon and Google kiss and make up, and offer ad-supported "free" music to their respective smart speakers. But there's SO. MUCH. MORE! Not wanting to be left out, Microsoft has its own security breach, Wisconsin officially moves to kill the Foxconn deal (but they might replace it with a better one if Foxconn actually ever does anything there), the iPhone tops smartphone marketshare in the US, and Mike and Charles take a look at the most credible reports of what's next for the fall iPhones this year (spoiler: not 5G, most likely, but it's not important yet). Meanwhile, apparently you can sue over butthurt if you're a shareholder (not a Samsung shareholder mind you ... different rules for Apple, don'cha know), and Apple's environmental stewardship continues to flourish like a hibiscus in a hothouse, and so is Apple's fledgling News+ service. T-Mobile and Apple continue the war on robocalls, but the Sprint merger doesn't look healthy; Terry Gou is leaving Foxconn to run for president of Taiwan; inductive Gen2 Apple Pencil charging could mess with your car keys, and ... are you sitting down? Because you should be sitting down for this, cadets ... the Galaxy Fold should have been kept in the lab longer, because at present its an all-new disaster for "first to market, last to get it right" Samsung. So much news we didn't even get to our usual other segments ... and That Can't Be Right!
