Grief Dreams. What are they? What do they mean? Is it normal to have a grief dream? Is it normal not to dream of the deceased? These are questions that Dr. Joshua Black has been studying for years now. Ever since he had a dream about his father several months after he had suddenly died, Joshua was curious about how these dreams affect people. For Joshua, that dream brought him a sense of peace. He had never had a chance to say goodbye to his father or tell him that he loved him. In the dream though, Joshua did just that. He said when he woke up the next morning, he felt that a little bit of color had returned to the world. He had a sense of peace and felt just a little bit better. As Joshua got further into his psychology training, he began to wonder if others had similar experiences with grief dreams. He decided to look into the research and found that very little existed. He dug in and started doing research himself. He found that although overall, 80% of dreams are negative, when looking at grief dreams, the overwhelming majority of these dreams are positive. They offer comfort to us, giving just a few more precious minutes with our loved ones. What about those of us who don't have grief dreams? Dr. Black says that most likely everyone does dream of their deceased loved ones. What happens though, is that many times, we don't remember those dreams. Approximately 10% of people never remember their dreams, and for those people, it will not really be possible to remember a grief dream either. For those of us who do at least occasionally remember dreams, however, we can do things to help ourselves have more dreams and have those dreams be positive. On his website, griefdreams.ca, we can download our own Dream Builder Worksheets to help us think about dreams we'd like to have about our loved ones. Dr. Black also has a podcast fittingly called, Grief Dreams Podcast where guests talk about their own grief dreams. Overall, these dreams can be a wonderful healing part of our own grief journeys.
In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, we had the opportunity to hear from Maha Corbett Co-Founder of SWIISH. Today in the Nova studio we are not only joined by Maha but her beautiful 4 week only baby Joshua who joins the conversation as well! Known for her entrepreneurial spirit, Maha began her career in Investment Banking Human Resources where she held senior executive roles. However, her desire to start her own business, coupled with her passion for all things wellness and fashion, saw Maha leave this career behind to launch SWIISH.com in October 2012 alongside her sister, Sally Obermeder. SWIISH stands for Stylish Women Inspiring Inner Strength Health & Happiness, and is a vibrant, feel-good online destination. It inspires women to feel amazing inside and out. The goal of starting this business was always to build it up so that they could enjoy the flexibility that comes with owning your own business, and start a family. ‘With all my experience through SWIISH, I fully understand the value of self-care and make it a priority, even now with a newborn' says Maha. Working right up until the birth of her little boy, Maha takes us through the unexpected arrival of Joshua and how she managed the transition of the business being her number #1 priority, to her new family. Being a new mum in business, learning how to trust others to do your job while you are away is essential. ‘It has taken us years to get the right team in place so that we do not need to be across every A-Z' says Maha. As Joshua joins us for a feed, Tory reminisces about early motherhood and business with some funny insights about her daughter pooping during a client pitch meeting to break the ice. One of the hardest tasks is finding the off switch. Maha's top tips - ‘At some point, you have to say that is enough for today – because if you don't look after yourself you can burn out. Also, there's power in your team of people. If you have the right team you can let go and press that off switch.' Maintaining boundaries is essential. With their husbands also working in the business, Maha gives her top tips for creating boundaries. She says you have to consciously create time to talk about life outside of work. Be intentional. Maintaining balance in your relationships, including the one with yourself, will keep your relationships healthy. ‘Bringing Joshua into the world has been a long time coming and I don't want to miss anything. I am happy to keep an eye on the business but I want to be there for all the small moments' says Maha. So, if she was to send a message to her future self when Joshua turns 21 years old…what would it be? Maha says, ‘You did good, you took life's ups and downs and you gave back and at the end of the day I just want him to be proud of me.' And finally, Tory asks Maha her three most powerful steps you ever took in business. ‘Just starting is the first step. Then you really need to know the numbers, but accountable to them and understand what they mean. And finally, you have to be able to make tough decisions around people.' Joshua English of okom wrks labs is a regenerative materials researcher and designer who has developed the strongest mycelium composite on the planet. What does this mean, exactly?Well, it means harnessing the self-replicating wonders of mycelium in order to create 1:1 replacements for materials that have historically led to deforestation. It means building houses, furniture, boat hulls and even spaceship hulls out of mushroom mycelium instead of the increasingly rare tropical hardwoods, toxic industrial wares, etc. that are currently employed.Joshua has pioneered a patent-pending mycelium based biocomposite called 'zerø-frm' with structural, load bearing properties…a monumental leap forward in the field, to say the least.zerø-frm uses low-tech means of creating load-bearing, structural components from 3 simple ingredients: mycelium, hemp hurd, and organic cotton.I ask Joshua if it is a pie in the sky fantasy to imagine a future where the world is quite literally made out of mycelium - you paddle your mycelium-composite canoe down the canal, disembark and walk up your mycelium dock into your cozy little okom-wrks zerø-frm structural insulated panel derived cabin, and lay down on your mycelium bed to dream of sweet little birds singing in joyful harmony!Spoiler alert - No, it’s not a fantasy world we’re talking about here, it’s the future of regenerative design. As Joshua himself states, “Science fiction always drives science." The potential impact of this kind of revolutionary and truly regenerative building material cannot be overstated. In this episode we touch upon Joshua's adventures in the world of mycelium-based biocomposite design, the future of regenerative building materials, the need for regional and circular economies, and other key players in the world of mycelium-design including Ecovative and MycoWorks. In the wilderness, the Israelites went to battle against the Amalekites. As Joshua led the army in battle, Moses went up on a nearby hill to watch. If he lifted his hands, Israel prevailed. If he lowered his hands, Amalek prevailed. His arms grew tired and heavy, so his brother and his helper each held up one of his arms for the entirety of the battle, and Israel won. In response, Moses made an altar to the Lord, calling Him "Jehovah-Nissi -- the LORD My Banner." Join me as we discuss the importance of banners and why God chooses to be identified with them. Philippians 3:15-16 ESV 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained. HAVE A MATURE THINKING. Based on the previous verses, Paul did emphasize his resolve to know Christ and nothing else. He enjoined each one ‘who are mature' to think in this same way. In putting the pursuit of Christ above all things, any excuse is unwarranted. It seemed that as a concession, Paul had admonished those who know they are not walking in that path as yet. At the very least, we, his readers, should not fall back into our previous life. Press on and focus on Christ. But, it you are not, at the very least, do not lose your ground in Christ. In terms of his ‘race' illustration, Paul was encouraging the Philippians to not back-pedal, even if they don't feel they're advancing. The same encouragement that Paul did to the Corinthians, when he said, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”[1 Cor 15:58] “Being immovable and abounding” is a beautiful picture of a maturing Christian, is it not? His life may plateau for awhile but not sliding back. However, in due time he will abound and become fruitful. Like trees, we have seasons of being vegetative and productiveness, respectively. Autumn and winter may cause the tree to shed off some leaves but the roots are still deeply engaged in sipping nutrients from the soil. In a little while, summer and spring may come so that the trees could flower and bear fruits again. As the psalmist penned; “but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”[Psa 1:2,3] The tree, whose roots have access to the river, isn't much affected by the changes of times and climate. In a similar fashion is the meditation to God's word to the mature believer. As Joshua had admonished, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”[Jos 1:8] Interestingly, Joshua had said this when they were about to ‘press on' and claim the land God had promised. Our mature thinking is re-enforced by our meditation to God's word. ------------------------- Visit our website and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube and Facebook.

As Joshua advances in years, he fulfills his mission to divide the land into inheritance for each tribe. Here, we also see Caleb, also advanced in years, claiming and taking his inheritance in Hebron.
PRAYER FOCUS: OUR MARCHING ORDERS: TAKE THE ROAD OF FAITH. IT MAY START OFF BEING ROCKY & DIFFICULT BUT IN THE END IT BECOMES A SMOOTH HIGHWAY! Listen to the Prayer Audio: Heavenly Father, As Joshua said long ago as for me and my household we are the Lord’s and we will fight under His Banner! So here we are Lord under the Banner of Your Son Yeshua/Jesus covered by His Blood which washes us clean and new to be in Your Presence. We are armored up to run to the front line of the battle Lord! We are here not for our own needs but for the needs of our land and its people. We are here Lord to intercede for America, its leaders and its people. We are the only land other than Israel that has made a covenant with You. Our founding fathers and mothers started with Mayflower Compact 400 year ago and our true history shows over this period of time we have grown to be a Nation dedicated to Jesus Christ Your Son and we have a heritage and many traditions that show our allegiance to You. In this day we want to re-connect and re-commit ourselves to this Covenant with You, cause we know that without You we are lost and will have no America! Lord we are her to fast and pray and intercede and do spiritual warfare to save our nation and to fulfill what the Your Prophet have spoken when we repent and call on Your Name You will hear us and heal our Land. Father that time is now! We are here to make America a Kingdom Nation that it was made to be. We want no other strange gods in our land or altars that have false worship in our midst. In the authority of Jesus we cast down these idols of false worship and the force of evil in their strongholds we smash with the Sword of Faith. We seek Justice as our foundation as it is in heaven! Father, in Your Great mercy You have given us an opportunity to turn back the tide of the one world government and its philosophy of socialism and communism and all the other evil isms that like snakes and vipers have crawled into our life! We take the Sword of Justice to cut off these evil heads! We no longer stay silent for the evil movement call Black Lives Matter or AntiFa or Planned Parenthood. These are not true movements for man’s betterment but purely of the evil one who comes to steal, kill and destroy. Lord it is in our cities and we bind the these principalities and demonic entities that hover over us in places like Seattle, Portland and Chicago and other parts of our nation. We are here Lord from our place in heavenly places with Your Son, Yeshua/Jesus throwing firey darts back into the enemy camp so that they will kill one another with their swords of destruction and chaos. May they turn to ashes and be cast back to the pit that awaits them. Lord, You Son has already defeated the enemy and so in His Name we continue to do as He did and throw off any of the shackles and chains of captivity of the evil ones and proclaim and declare We are free in Christ Jesus and He and only He is whom we serve and call Lord! Father, we seek a renewal and restoration that will sweep across them land by the Power of the Holy Spirit to have Americans arise to bring a tsunami of voting to re-elect President Trump and those who will support and enact the plans You have place in his heart for America and its unity with Israel, Your Sacred Land. Lord we are here to fight to bring about the plans You have for us. We are here Lord to throw off the oppresive and evil actions of those who have held office over us by trickery, deceit and lies and cheating in all forms they could muster. We say Now it is to stop! The powers of hell are crushed at the gates of our nation Now! Awaken more of Your People to see how worthy and valuable every life is to You! That abortion and every type of evil against children is to stop and all those who have in any way advanced this or been a part of it may they if possible repent or suffer sever consequences of bring curses upon ...
When God's going to war, you want to be behind Him, not in front of Him. War is a science involving logistics and ballistics and topography and psychology - when we think of it only from a human perspective. If God is in the picture, you can throw all that out the window. Our second child was born the day Billy Graham died. I still remember being in the hospital room as the breaking news of Graham’s death was reported. Understandably, I only heard a small portion of the tributes that poured in on that day, but there was no doubt that the famed evangelist lived a life worth remembering. He was faithful to God until the end. In our text today, Joshua was approaching his personal finish line. Before his time on earth was over, he reminded the people that good leaders are first and foremost godly leaders. First, he gave God all the credit for how far they had come (v. 3). Then, he reminded the people that the Lord had fulfilled all His promises by fighting for them and giving them their inheritance (vv. 4–5). The rest of the passage contains well-learned lessons on leadership. A godly leader is to be in God’s Word and do what it says. It does little good if one knows what the commandments are but then turns from them (vv. 6, 16). Joshua also warned leaders not to associate with pagan worshipers. As a young nation, he wanted his followers to remain steadfast in their commitment to the Lord and not be persuaded by outside teachings (vv. 7–8, 12–13). As Joshua reflected on his years of walking with the Lord, the last lesson he taught the people of Israel was that remaining faithful to God is a lifelong pursuit. It is easy to give in to the lies of the enemy. But good leaders are also godly leaders. They are not just godly for a moment, but their entire lives are led by God and His Word. >> Whether you realize it or not, you are a leader! In your business, your neighborhood, or your family, you have the potential to influence those around you. Knowingly or unknowingly people watch you. They see how you conduct yourself. Make it your goal to be a godly leader.
Rev. Tom Are preaches from Joshua 1:1-9. As Joshua leads God's people into the promised land, God tells him, "be strong and courageous." He, and all the people, needed courage not simply because battles awaited, but because they knew they were to live as a people shaped by God's word. To live faithful to the word of God always requires courage. Support the show (https://www.villagepres.org/giving.html)
Imagine you heard on the evening news that a band of nomads was attempting to take over a fortified city. Nobody would think they stood a chance, especially if their experienced leader had just died. As Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land, it wasn’t just them against the world. We know that God was with them every step of the way (vv. 6, 9). Nevertheless, their journey would not be easy. That is why three times in today’s passage, you read the phrase “be strong and courageous” (vv. 6, 7, 9). It doesn’t seem like Joshua lacked confidence. After all, he had volunteered to be a spy, and raised his hand when everyone wanted to turn back. Moses even handpicked the young man to be his personal aide. Rather, the Lord knew that the quest Joshua and the Israelites were about to embark on was going to be challenging physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Not only would it take all of their might, resilience, and composure, it would take all of their courage. The key to success for Joshua and the Israelites came not from strength and courage but from a relationship with the God whose laws and commandments went with them wherever they roamed. The Law taught God’s people how to live righteously in obedience to Him. It also showed them their need for God’s grace and forgiveness. Unlike the barbaric and vicious living of their contemporaries, God called His people to be different. Their quest was tough. The road was long. Would they be able to find God’s power to be strong and courageous? Stay tuned. >> Finding strength and courage in difficult situations does not always come from within. Rather, it comes from finding God even in the midst of your circumstances. God promises to give you the strength you need. What situation are you facing today? The courage you need is there for asking!
In “As for Me”, Rodney shares that we need Fathers more than ever before. In fact, Fathers – Dads are essential! The elevation of the teaching of evolution, radical feminism, ill-advised and dysfunctional social programs; along with no fault divorce have led to the disintegration of manhood and fatherhood. Men are left to living without purpose or vision. We need every man to recommit to leading their homes. We begin with being reminded of God’s faithfulness over the years and acknowledging all we have, are, or will be is because of God’s grace. When we decide to trust God and serve him wholeheartedly we can only then lead our families effectively. As a man and father, you can only build a Christian home when you begin with your relationship with Jesus. As Joshua declared, “As for me, and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

As Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan they faced an unknown future. In the wilderness years they had supernatural -provision and guidance-. Now the Ark of the Covenant was to lead the way. They were to sanctify themselves and keep a respectful distance. In the same way for us as believers now, we pursue holiness, look to the Lord and His Word. We are to exercise simple, patient trust and faith. He will then show us the way we must go in our battle for souls and the battles against sin. Blessing is promised but is also conditional.
As Joshua led the nation of Israel into the promised land he walked a path he had never walked before. Sound familiar? We’re walking a path we’ve never walked before as a nation, as a church, & as individuals. But God led Joshua & He is leading us. The post BATTLES & BLESSINGS: WEEK 3 | Look For God & Follow appeared first on Cross Point Church.
As Joshua follows the Lord’s command to be “strong & courageous”, he leads the Israelite army into The Promised Land to fight on God’s behalf for their long-awaited inheritance.
Who said being a Christian was going to be easy? As Christian’s we are called to a higher standard, and must not blend in with everyone else. Jesus wants much more than outward observances of his law. He has written his law on our hearts and He’s very interested in a transformation of our hearts. He reminds us today he did not come to abolish but to “fulfill” the Law of Moses and the the prophets. This means Jesus is revealing to us a deeper meaning and purpose of the Ten Commandments and the moral Law of the Old Testament. He actually transcends the Law of Moses, and demands from us, a moral life that is even far greater than that of the most pious of Jews, scribes or Pharisees. It would seem to be an almost impossible task. He even ended this same gospel message commanding, “we must be perfect just as our heavenly Father is perfect.” And if that’s going to happen, we are going to need an awful lot of Grace.God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called, Amen. All of us here fall short of the glory of God, but thanks be to God, he gives us his grace. So just what exactly is Grace? And how do we receive it? Grace is first given to us at baptism and then subsequently through all the sacraments. It’s free, undeserved, we don’t earn it, but we can loose it, and fall out of it by sin. The best news, is it can be restored to us by Gods mercy and forgiveness. It comes to us in many ways, and most abundantly in all the sacraments. In about 10 days we will begin lent. This is a time when we will up our game in prayer, fasting and almsgiving, turning our hearts towards God and away from temporal matters. Grace is the love of God being poured into our hearts. Paul in our second reading today describes this love of God, “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.” This amazing Grace is a free gift that we must freely open. If we open it we will receive all that is necessary to live by this higher calling God has given to each of us today. Our first reading from Sirach emphasizes choice is involved, “If you choose, you can keep the commandments.” God has placed before us fire and water; and he tells us to simply stretch out our hands to whichever we choose. Our lives are ultimately defined by the choices we will make. At any given moment, our free will gives us the ability to complete freedom of choice, to either burn in fire, or to be free to live in accordance with the cool, living water of our baptism. As Joshua says, “Choose this day whom you will serve, As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” And in the book of Deuteronomy, we hear, “I call heaven and earth today to witness against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life.” God’s Grace helps us make that choice in any given moment. Grace helps us to become perfect like our Heavenly Father. We are all called to be Saints. It slowly changes us more into the image we were created to be. It’s a life long journey and what the Church calls “The call to holiness.” For holiness is the only true happiness in this world. Holiness is a life filled with Gods Grace. And from Grace, peace and happiness flow. Something the world cannot give, provide, or even understand. Our responsorial psalm today describes “how blessed is the one who walks in the law of the Lord, who observes what he says, who seeks him with all his or her heart.” Obedience leads to true peace and happiness comes.

As Joshua explains in this discussion, of the 26-or-so known languages in the region he does field work in, two-thirds of those languages have less than 50 speakers left. As Joshua gave his final address to the nation that God had allowed him to lead into the Promised Land, he urged them to make a singular choice: serve the Lord. As Pastor Jeremy shows us in this week's sermon, that's a decision that all of us would be wise to consider afresh and anew as a new decade has begun. Listen in to this special Covenant Sunday message in which our members are encouraged to renew their membership covenant, and everyone is encouraged to take the next step in his or her growing walk with Christ.
As Joshua led the Israelites toward the Promised and they had to cross the Jordan river. A miracle happened that allowed they to cross on dry land and once they reached the other side they stopped, praised God, and set stones as a reminder of what God had done. Sermon from November 3, 2019
Awake 2 Oneness Radio with Spiritual Healer, Astral Traveler and Author Joshua Tongol on Friday, October 18, 2019 at 7:00 PM. This program was pre-recorded. In 2006, Joshua was challenged by what many would consider to be a modern-day miracle. He was so convinced of its authenticity that he began his own journey into healing, investigating whether miracles and all things paranormal still occur regularly today. He read every book he could find on the subject as well as met with countless people who operated in “supernatural gifts.” Joshua then began praying for the sick and injured and, for the first time, started seeing results—including his own healing from both GERD and his back injury. Joshua eventually discovered that the universal power to heal resides in every human being, that it doesn’t belong to just one group, religion, sect, or even to one special person. Instead, he realized that the principles of healing are woven into the very fabric of the universe and are available to anyone, anytime, and anywhere. As Joshua often says, “The Universe plays no favorites.” To learn more about Joshua visit his website: https://joshuatongol.com/
In this lesson, Pastor Miller covers Exodus 17:8-16 where Israel is attacked by Amalek and God uses Joshua and Moses as leaders to gain the victory. As Joshua prepares for ware and leads the army Moses, Aaron, and Hur stand on a hill near by with the rod of God upheld in Moses’ hands.https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1e2-9rRi-GeWDTn7c5X-__Rt_VVPiF0fg?usp=sharingFor more information, please visit www.OTBChurch.com
It's good to want to keep the faith. It's another thing to know how. As Joshua passes along the responsibilities of leadership to the new generation he wants to make sure they know how to be faithful.
As Joshua prepares to bring the people of God across the Jordan River into their promised inheritance, God's word to him is to be strong and courageous. His commission involved acting on God's word. God's call to us today is also to be more than mere hearers of His word, but doers of His word.
Day 72 of the podcast, reading Joshua 12-14 NET, read along at: https://netbible.org/bible/Joshua+12-14/ This is day 72 of our journey. Today, we see a list of all the kings who were defeated by Moses (2) and Joshua (31). This is followed by a description of the inheritance of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half Manasseh on the east side of the Jordan. As Joshua prepares to divide up the land on the west of the Jordan, the 85 year old Caleb approaches to remind his leader of God's promise that Hebron would be Caleb's inheritance. He trusts God to help him clear the inhabitants of the region and claim the land as his own. Join me in Joshua 12-14 as the people are beginning to settle down. Key verses: Joshua 12:7 These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the Israelites defeated on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal Gad in the Lebanon Valley to Mount Halak on up to Seir. Joshua assigned this territory to the Israelite tribes, Joshua 13:32 These are the land assignments made by Moses in the rift valley plains of Moab east of the Jordan River opposite Jericho. Joshua 14:14 So Hebron remains the assigned land of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this very day because he remained loyal to the Lord God of Israel. All Scriptures are from the NET.
Joshua 7:6 – Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell face down to the ground before the Ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening. Shortly after their miraculous victory over the city-state of Jericho, the Israelites suffered humiliating defeat at the small town of Ai. They were so confident it could be conquered that they recommended only two or three thousand soldiers be sent to overthrow it. To everyone’s surprise, however, Ai scattered Israel’s army, and killed thirty-six of their soldiers. This was a catastrophic disaster. As Joshua lay face down before the Ark of the Covenant, God revealed the reason for Israel’s defeat: Before the attack on Jericho, God gave clear instructions: “All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into His treasury.” But an Israelite soldier named Achan found some precious things in Jericho, and kept them for himself. God was now withholding his support until Achan be singled out and put to death. Achan could’ve confessed and begged for mercy. He might never outlived the shame, but perhaps he could have saved his own life. But Achan refused to confess until it was too late. We can learn from his mistake, and be prepared to repent and ask for forgiveness when we need it.
As Joshua and Adam look to 2019, they suggest the theme for this year is spaciousness in one's creative work. That is not to say we don't need deadlines, but rather how do we stay spacious and creative in the face of internal or external pressure? The defining moments of life require both strength and courage. As Joshua stood at the river’s edge, preparing to take the land God had promised, it wasn’t strength and courage for the battles that lay ahead that Joshua needed. It was strength and courage to be in obedience to God. It was his understanding of God’s will and living in obedience to it that would define his success. The same is true for us. The most courageous thing we will ever do is to say yes to God.
Every now and then in the book of Joshua, we get introduced to a character whose life illustrates the kind of faith God is looking for in His people. They may seem few and far between, but they’re there. And in Joshua 14:1-15, we meet Caleb. As Joshua and the Israelites prepare to divide up the land of Canaan, Caleb approaches Joshua about a promise made to him by Moses more than 40 years earlier. Caleb, along with Joshua, had been one of the original 12 men who had been sent by Moses to spy out the land of Canaan. He and Joshua had been the only two who had returned from their mission and believed the land was not only abundantly fruitful, but conquerable. The other spies painted a bleak picture, describing the land as being filled with giants who were too strong for the Israelites to defeat. Rather than listen to Caleb and Joshua and trust God, the crowd had listened to the naysayers and refused to enter. But because of his faith in God, Caleb was promised his share in the inheritance.
What does it mean to enter God’s rest? It sounds appealing but can sometimes feel like an unachievable dream. For many of us, God’s rest is synonymous with heaven. And while there is little doubt that heaven will be a place of rest, joy and contentment, there is still an aspect of God’s rest that is available in this life. As Joshua and the people of Israel stood on the eastern banks of the Jordan River, looking over the waters into the land of Canaan, they realized that they were on the verge of entering God’s rest. The land on the other side of that river had been promised to them by God and He had declared that it would be a place of abundance, but also of rest. And yet, as we will see, God’s promise of rest was not a guarantee of a lack turmoil or conflict. There were still enemies in the land who would need to be defeated. Which meant there were battles to fight and wars to win. In Joshua 1:10-18, we will see Joshua preparing the people to enter God’s rest, but by warning them that it was going to take effort. The land was theirs, but they were going to have to fight for it. It was going to require obedient submission to God’s will and faithful trust in His power to provide.
Joshua March is the founder and CEO of Conversocial a cloud solution that enables businesses to deliver customer service over Social Media at a large-scale. Conversocial is used in the contact centers of hundreds of major retailers, banks, telcos and other brands to enable them to manage the high volumes of complaints and questions they're receiving through social networks like Facebook and Twitter, including Google, Hertz, Tesco, Barclaycard, Hyatt hotels and many more. Questions Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey Your company caters more to organizations that are serving customers on a large scale, can the service also be provided to persons who are not serving customers on a large scale? What are some of the things based on the line of business that you are in that you see coming into play in the near future in terms of customer service and what do you see coming as things that we need to prepare ourselves for more as businesses? Is there a formula that exits out there to measure effort? How do you stay motivated every day? What is one online resource, website, tool or app that you absolutely cannot live without in your business? What are some of the books that have had the biggest impact on you? What is the one thing in your life right now that you are really excited about – something that you are working on to develop yourself or people? Where can our listeners find you online? What is one quote or saying that you live by or that inspires you in times of adversity? Highlights Joshua stated that he has been working in the social media space for many years. His previous company was called iPlatform and they were one of the first ever companies building applications on top of Facebook for brands back in 2007/2008, the early days and while he was really excited about the use of the app platforms which you may remember back then like Farmville and stuff like that. He was really excited about how those platforms could be used by brands to engage with their customers. What he pretty quickly realized was that the really, really big change that was happening wasn’t in just how people were communicating and that there was this big shift going on which pretty much happened now but it's continuing to happen away from other types of digital communication and into Social Media and mobile messaging primarily on And the he included mobile messaging within the Social Media, Facebook Messenger, Twitter DM, now What’s App, coming up We Chat, so it's not just the public, it's the private side as well. He really saw that as the future of how everyone individually would be communicating with each other and he really believed that as these channels became the dominant communication channels then that would change how businesses had to communicate with their customers too and it would be really important to customer service and that suddenly happened. The start of that was really people turning to the public side of Social Media to kind of escalate complaints about a business and get a response. And while that still goes on it's actually transitioned now to be much more about businesses just investing into the private side, private messaging with these channels. The preferred customer service channels and that's all the reasons for that. A - It's much better from a consumer side, it's so effortless and easy for someone to pull out their phone and message your brand, it means that you get really high customer satisfaction if you promote it as a service channel and from a business perspective it's great to get that customer satisfaction but it's also a great efficient channel, you can manage these digital messaging channels and in an asynchronous way that’s highly efficient from an agent workflow perspective. And with the launch of the bot platform is much easier to automate and so it's just become this channel that is really much better than anything else out there from a cost perspective and customer satisfaction perspective. Joshua stated that the background to that was that they’ve been going 5/6 years now and their (Conversocial) software is from real customer service software, they spend a lot of time building a real case management system into the ability to have automated routing and workflows dashboards where you can see exactly what your agents are doing. Now all of those kinds of functionality become really useful as soon as you have a team of agents. Now if you go back 3, 4, 5 years ago, the volume of people who were coming through and complaining through Social Media and mobile messaging was only really a couple of percent of all of your inbound volume. And what that meant was that for a small, medium sized businesses, it was it really wasn't a lot of volume and it was something that probably just some agents or have a couple of agents maybe they're just doing that on the side. But if you're a big business even 2% it's still a lot. And so, the big businesses even in those early days were still setting up 10, 20, 30 full time agents to do customer service through Social Media and mobile messaging. And they are really kind of catering to that audience. Now today it's actually starting to shift a bit because as you start really promoting, if you stop promoting like message us as your main customer service channel or if you're using the new Facebook Messenger customer champ plugin which allows you to actually paddle Web chat on your site using Facebook Messenger. They have customers who are doing that and Facebook Messenger is now responsible for 44% of all of that service volume including phone Nino and so once the volume start getting that high which they do if you're promoting it, even if you have a much smaller team of agents you're still going to need multiple agents just handling social messaging. And then a platform like Conversocial becomes extremely valuable. So, you still need to have a team but the companies that need a team of that size for social messaging becoming smaller and smaller as the volumes keep getting bigger and bigger. Yanique mentioned that his business caters to the type of customer that needs the information now. Gone are the days when you'd write a letter and submit it to the organization through the mail and a couple of weeks or months later you get back our response plans. The clients that we're dealing with nowadays there’re in the now age. Joshua agreed and stated that we live in an in the moment world where people are expecting almost real-time response to everything. And if you're going to take days to respond, they're probably just going to phone you at that point, people need an answer or they'll just go to a competitor, that's the reality. But on the flip side, one of the great things about digital messaging and asynchronous messaging as opposed to traditional web chat is that it's more like texting a friend and texting a friend it's pretty much real time that they're responding in 5 minutes. And if there is occasionally a message it takes a little bit longer and some are shorter and that's fine. And the traditional web chat world that doesn't work because the web chat world is like sitting there with the chat box open when waiting for a response and so you have to have current agents online responding within seconds. But with an asynchronous messaging you can even out those bums most a lot more easily and you can have a smaller number of agents handling a much larger number of customers as a result. Because as soon as you respond that pops up as a notification on their phone, they don't have to be sitting there paying attention all the time. So, it's very convenient for both the customers and for customer service agents. Joshua stated that messaging is really what's growing, it’s going to dominate the industry and depending where you are, there are different messaging platforms. Now the one that's very exciting from people in many areas of the world especially Europe, U.K, South America is WhatsApp. WhatsApp is just such a dominant messaging platform that has completely replaced SMS in many parts of the world via internet. They're just starting to experiment with business accounts and the word on the street is that some point this year probably early this year. They're going to be releasing business tools and releasing an API which allows platforms like theirs to help their customers manage them. And he thinks that as soon as that happens it's going to become a huge, huge business to consumer channel. He thinks a lot of businesses are desperate for it, a lot of clients, customers would love it, it’s super convenient. People are using all the time already, so, he thinks that's going to release load this year. There is one which is very interesting, probably not going to explode in the same way because they're going to be much more careful and constrained about how they release it is Apple Business Chat, so this is Apple's business chat solution built on top of IMessages. Apple's nesting system is completely integrated with text messaging, so it’s used on iPhone and it goes blue and that's with IMessaging and getting more capabilities so that they're enabling brands to have business accounts. And what's exciting about this, there are two main exciting things. One is security, they're very well-known for privacy and security similar to WhatsApp in that regard. The other thing is discoverability and this is where they're going to really have a very interesting advantage over other messaging platforms. And there are two parts to it, one is in maps. So, if you are in apple maps looking at a local restaurant or a coffee shop there will be a button that says message them and you'll be able to just message them straight away and be like, “Hey, I want to order this or I want to order that” tightly integrated with Apple Pay, you could pay seamlessly and then go pick it up or they deliver it. And that could actually act as a kind of intermediary problem like the kind of post mates and stuff like, where at the moment of sitting in between and potentially this can make it super easy to go straight to a restaurant. And that's one area of discoverability and the maps the other area is with Siri the voice system. And this is where it gets really cool especially for big brands. We will acquire hotels, if you want to like message them saying you want to extend your stay for the night, how do you do that today, you have to look them up. You could message them on Facebook if you know about that and you have the app, you could DM them on Twitter there is always things that they're promoting in interesting ways but with business chat you’ll just be able to say, “Hey Siri, message Hyatt tell them I want to stay another night.” It's done, no app needed. Nothing else. It just like sends that message and Hyatt can respond over text, you can even pay using Apple Pay on your phone if you wanted. That's a pretty cool and like seamlessly integrated experience and will potentially bring voice assistance into like how people are into engaging with businesses for the first time. Apple is going to be very careful in how they roll that out and the brands they work with, they want to make sure they create really nice experiences. He thinks there's some really exciting stuff with that and could be pretty meaningful. Yanique mentioned that a big part of what she heard in a lot of what Joshua said was convenience. She thinks convenience is definitely one of the key differentiators that businesses who are disrupting the whole customer experience platform, they're really killing it in that area and making life more convenient for their customers because that to her is just a very convenient. Joshua stated that there is a huge amount of data which talks about the benefits for this, his favorite book on this subject is The Effortless Experience : Conquering the New Battleground for Customer Loyalty by Matthew Dixon, Nicholas Toman and Rick Delisi of CEB, who is now part of Gartner and it's a book that’s given to lot of a lot of his clients and Effortless Experience costly had a huge amount of data from years like large studies and it shows that the most important thing that affects customer loyalty after a service interaction is the effort that they have to put in to getting their true result. When someone has a problem or a complaint or an issue, they just want that issue to be solved as soon as possible, as easily as possible and it's very hard to increase their loyalty following any service interaction even if you really go crazy go above and beyond. They had an issue and you solved it great, they're not going to be ecstatic, maybe they'll be a little bit happier, what happens in the majority of cases, is that their loyalty is reduced and the data shows that if you do anything that makes it harder for them to get their issue solved; it has a massive negative impact on loyalty. If you make them jump through any hoops to speaks with an agent that they have to repeat themselves, they have to tell one person one thing and then they have to speak to someone else and tell them the same thing again. Anything like that which is just annoying and hassle or puts a delay, puts them on hold has a really, really negative impact. And so, if you can just reduce that effort, then you could have a massive impact on Customer Loyalty. He thinks this is the core of what makes social messaging so powerful is that it’s just so effortless. He spent the last year writing a book as well which is going to be coming out this quarter which he’s excited about and it's going to be called “Message Me”, it's all about the future of customer service and looks at the impact of messaging and he talks a lot about effortless experience in that book because he thinks that in many ways they kind of figured out the foundation and they could have asked this question, “How do you make it effortless?” And he doesn’t think that technology was really there at the time when they wrote book to actually implement it. But he thinks that with messaging, we finally do have the technology to implement a service channel which really can be completely effortless for consumers and that's super exciting. Yanique stated that one of the things that she’s most amazed about as it relates to customer experience as well is regardless of where you are from in the world or however you are socialized, whether you're from Europe, North America, South America or the Caribbean, at the end of the day because we're all human beings, we're all yearning for that connection we're all yearning for some basic needs to be met. As Joshua said, she agreed that if you have to put in less effort you are more likely to go along with that particular service provider because they make life much easier for you. You have so many hurdles to jump over on a daily basis, whereas, if you're running a business, you're a family maker, you have a husband to take care of or a wife, kids up and down, just so many things pulling in all different directions. So, if you can do business with an organization that is looking out for you in that aspect and they're pulling you in less directions and they make it super easy kind of like Amazon, you can sit down in the convenience of your own home and basically order whatever you'd like to order and it's delivered to you, you don't have to go into the store and stress yourself out walking up and do figuring out which aisle it is in. Everything can be purchased with the click of a button, it really does definitely drive you to be loyal to that organization because you look back on those experiences and that's what would make you continue doing business with them. Joshua agreed and stated that it’s important and he thinks not enough businesses really pay attention to it today. People are used to the point of looking at measuring customer satisfaction and empty apps. I actually love to see more and more businesses measuring customer satisfaction and NPS but he would actually love to see more and more businesses people measuring effort and measure how convenient, how effortless was it for them to get help, he thinks that would be really impactful for a lot of businesses. Joshua stated that in measuring effort, there isn't a standard kind of well-known way in the same way that you have NPS for example. There's a great case study from one of their customers British Telecom, telecoms company in the UK where they took this pretty seriously and they created what they call a Net Easy Score and very simple, they just asked people after service interaction, “How do you find that experience? How hard or easy was it to resolve the experience?” and it was just three answers. It was easy to resolve, it was it was difficult or it was kind of mutual. So, super simple question and they rolled that out across all of their service channels and they started tracking customer retention and the retention of the customers who'd reported that they had an easy service experience versus the customers that said they had a hard service experience and they found a huge difference. They found the customers who'd had a hard service experience were difficult to resolve their issue was 40% more likely to churn over the next three months, 40% more likely which is a huge number. So, they made a massive impact on whether those customers would stay as customers or not and when they actually looked at the different kind of Net Easy Score as they call it for different channels they found that social media and messaging and webchat that were the easiest channels by a long way, they were easier than phone by 4 to 1 and they were easier than email and cell service by 2 to 1. So, a huge impact for online business from understanding that and these are pretty simple way of asking a question. Yanique asked if this question is asked after every interaction with their business or is it a question that they ask maybe on a yearly basis based on the customers who are their clients. Joshua stated that they did the actual, so, before they started working with them so he doesn’t know exactly how they do it. The way that they help their clients do surveys today through social and messaging is that your after-service interaction has been closed and resolved, then they send out an automatic survey inside the messaging thread from the Facebook Messenger or Twitter that ask them whatever question they want to have set up. So, it's after every service interaction, he thinks that's the best way to get that kind of data. Yanique agreed and mentioned that people do remember the experience that they have had within the first 24 hours and then after that if it's not super great or really bad, they really don't remember the details. So, that question should be asked after each interaction. Joshua mention that they see that the faster you get out after the issue has been resolved, the higher the response rate. Joshua stated that he is a pretty highly motivated person in general. His overall motivation is really about the stuff that they want to achieve as a business. And when he set out starting the business, he had this kind of very clear vision, he was like, “There's a reason that everyone is switching to these channels from a consumer perspective.” That's because it's a better channel, it's more efficient, it's easier, it's more convenient, it’s on everyone's phone, the way the messaging organizes communication which is by people instead of subjects is more natural, this is just a better way of communicating. And he really believed and still believe that if companies switch to these forms of communication then it's better for them and better for the customers. And they kind of set out their vision and they set out this clear mission of saying, “Yes, we want to really build the next generation of customer service software.” It's all focused around these new channels which they really believe are better. He gets a huge amount of motivation from seeing them and make that vision become a reality. Every company that they sign up has a customer who then starts more actively promoting these channels and increasing the volume of service issues that’s dealing with messaging instead of phone and email. All of that really gets him excited. He loves to see that continuing success and performance and the things that they’re achieving as a business. He’s kind of prepared to do whatever it takes to help them make that vision become a reality, he doesn’t really think too much about specifically what he enjoys doing during the day or not, it's really just about what he needs to do in order to help them be successful and that's what really gets him excited. Joshua stated that the app that we cannot live without would have to be Twitter. They have to use lots of different technology in the business, they love of using different technology. Twitter has this incredible network and he uses it a lot personally, tied to it for the news these days. But they use it huge amount for business as well, they connect with a lot of their customers on there, we connect to a lot of influences, a lot of thought leaders, they do a lot of thought leadership and share a lot of thought leadership through it. So, it's just added such value to his life and to the business. Joshua mentioned that The Effortless Experience: Conquering the New Battleground for Customer Loyalty by Matthew Dixon, Nicholas Toman and Rick Delisi certainly from an approach to customer service perspective. From a management perspective, The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers by Ben Horowitz is one of his favorite and has been the most impactful book from a management perspective, kind of entrepreneur’s journey, how to really scale a business and manage a management team and very raw and very real, a lot of really valuable insight. So, that has been one of his favorite books. The other than that, he loves reading Sci-Fi, he’s a huge fan of Sci-Fi which he thinks actually gives him tons of business ideas and ideas about the future. So, he thinks it’s actually super valuable for anyone especially entrepreneurs working in technology should absolutely read a lot of Sci-Fi. Yanique mentioned that reading Sci-Fi is a very unusual genre of books to read but she can see where Joshua is coming from with it because it kind of opens your mind to the impossible and that's where we're heading. Joshua agreed and stated that if you're interested in customer service, the future of customer service, you should read his book “Message Me” which is going to be coming out pretty soon which he mentioned earlier as well. Joshua stated that something that he’s excited about right now, the book Message Me was the kind of his main passion project over the last year. He really wanted to kind of get down on paper two things, both his thoughts as to what businesses need to be doing today to really benefit from messaging, benefit from automation, how they really need to structure customer service teams, how to train agents how to promote these things in the right way. But then also, his vision for how messaging and automation intelligence are really going to change customer service in the years ahead. So that's been a big labor of love actually he just went to the printers a few days ago. So, he’s pretty excited about that, so that's a really big one. Outside of that, he’s also a big fan of personal development, he’s been getting more and more into meditation over the last year and in a few weeks, he’s actually about to go do his first Meditation Retreat where he’ll be on a silent meditation retreat for 10 days. So, he’s excited about that and slightly nervous. Joshua shared listeners can find him at – Twitter - @joshuamarch www.conversocial.com Twitter - @conversocial LinkedIn - Joshua March Joshua shared that a quote that comes to mind is the quote from Winston Churchill, “When going through hell, keep going” he really loves that quote, the key for any entrepreneur but is really true for anyone trying to achieve anything big in life is really persistence and grit, whatever you do and whatever you try to do and the bigger the thing you trying to do, the more ambitious it is, the harder it’s going to be. The more road blocks you’re going to face, the more mistakes you’re going to make and failures you’re going to have, every single person no matter how successful has those failures, in fact, the more successful you are, the more failures you’ve had and the key throughout all of it is to never give up and to keep going, pick yourself up, learn from your mistakes, keep evolving and that’s really the only thing that will get you anywhere in life. Our lives are full of choices and things we commit to. As Joshua challenged the Israelites to decide who they would serve, he also challenges us to choose who we will serve today- the things of the world or the eternal things of God.
The Scriptures call us over and over to a practice of remembering, as it comes to remembering God's activity in our lives and his faithfulness. As Joshua does here (ch. 3 & 4) - we're invited to make some 'memory markers' in our lives. Remembering builds our trust & relationship with GOD – the ONE who has helped us in the past and helps us now and will continue to help us securely into the future. REMEMBERING MATTERS – it refuels our soul, reinvigorates our minds, refreshes our hearts & reinforces our love for Jesus!
I'm a starter. It's much harder for me to finish things. I start books. I start home improvement projects. I buy bags of dried fruits and nuts and often don't finish them. That one drives my wife nuts (no pun intended). But one thing I have seemed to figure out is how to keep moving forward in my faith. I'm not done yet but I'm still at it. My faith in Christ began years ago as a young adolescent when I gave my life to Christ on a beach in San Onofre. Though the principle of undulation would best characterize my faith development, I am still going. And like Caleb, I am as strong today as I was in my youth. I can't say that for a lot of things but I can say that about my faith. As Joshua wraps up his comments to Israel, he reminds them of the key to longevity in the land. It's three things. Arriving is one thing, staying there is another. See you Sunday as we explore three ways to live long and large in the land God has given you. Todd
As Joshua prepares to cross the Jordan River 3 notes of encouragement were given him by God -- listen to what they are and know they are just as relevant and available for God's child today!
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left (Exod 14:21-22). This was what happened when the people of Israel were reborn by going through water. The "strong east wind" was the Holy Spirit—the power of new creation. It was the spirit of God who was hovering over the waters, the deep, and his power was released when God said, "Let there be light." The same Holy Spirit was with the people of Israel, and he guided them as they traveled in the wilderness, which was a proof that they were heirs of God. And it was this spirit who led those of the second generation into the Promised Land. Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing. ... So the people crossed over opposite Jericho (Joshua 3:15-16). These people were also reborn by going through water, and became heirs of God. The Holy Spirit was a seal and a deposit guaranteeing their inheritance. This role of God's spirit is well illustrated in the story of Elijah and Elisha. Elisha succeeded Elijah by receiving the same spirit that Elijah had. Interestingly, they too crossed the Jordan with the water divided. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?" "Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit," Elisha replied (2 Kgs 2:9). "A double portion" meant the inheritance that a firstborn son received from his father. So, Elisha inherited the spirit that rested on Elijah by seeing him taken up to heaven. Note how Elisha shouted that time: "My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel." These chariots and horsemen had followed him since then. All this was to reestablish the nation of Israel that completely failed to keep their covenant with God. It meant to be a renewal of the covenant. So, as Joshua did, Elisha crossed the Jordan from east to west, and reentered the Promised Land with the water also divided. The spirit he received was the only hope guaranteeing the succession of the inheritance promised to the people of Israel who had failed to be God's heirs by breaking the covenant as Naomi was for the field of Elimelech. In fact, this spirit was never taken away from Israel, even during the time of the Babylonian captivity. God spoke through Haggai to the people who had returned to Jerusalem, saying: This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear (Hag 2:5). The same spirit remains among those who have become God's heirs in Christ today. As Joshua received the spirit that Moses had and as Elisha received the spirit that Elijah had, Jesus' disciples received the Holy Spirit that Jesus had so that they would go and lay hold of God's kingdom. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight (Acts 1:8-9). We, as believers in Christ and heirs of God, have an important role in this church age when the rest of the people in the world, even the chosen ones of Israel are failing to be such.
This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty. "What are you, O mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it (Zech 4:6-7)!’” As it has been already pointed out, this section of chapter 4 of Zechariah was originally recorded as an independent oracle and placed right after 1:7, but later, it was moved from there and inserted in the present location by an editor (or the author himself). If it were still in the originally place, we would interpret this oracle simply as an oracle given to Zerubbabel and to Zechariah to encourage them as they faced the situation of that time, especially concerning the task of rebuilding the temple. However, since the oracle seemed to contain something much more—far beyond their current situation and into the distant future, it was moved into the middle of the vision that also deals with something of the future—especially, that of a drastic topographical change of Jerusalem. The “mighty (great) mountain” was Mount Zion on which David’s palace once stood. It was still a high mountain, then, higher than any other parts of the city, but the oracle says, “Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground.” As “Joshua the high priest” in chapter 3 represented the nation of Israel as well as the city of Jerusalem that had been destroyed and burnt, “Zerubbabel” symbolically represented the kingdom that had come to exist under the Davidic covenant. As the horn of a nation is chopped off, the leveling of Mount Zion signifies the cutting off of the visible existence of David’s kingdom. The visible or physical boundary between Israel and the gentile nations would disappear, and the two would be united and amalgamated into one kingdom. In fact, the same thing has been revealed in the vision of a man with a measuring line in chapter two: “Jerusalem will be a city without walls (2:4).” Paul speaks of this amalgamation of Israel and Gentiles through Christ as follows: For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility (Eph 2:14-16). In other words, the former kingdom of Israel was overthrown and destroyed, and a new kingdom through Christ was established under the same Davidic covenant. And if the way a kingdom stands has changed, and a new kingdom has been built, then, the former foundation must have been removed, and a new foundation must have been laid. Therefore, two different kinds of stones are mentioned in this oracle of Zech 4: “the capstone” that Zerubbabel will bring out, and “the plumb line” that he will come to have in his hand and people will rejoice at. Each of them is expressed as a “stone (eben)” modified by an unusual adjective that occurs only once and here in the Bible. The first one sounds like “the former stone,” and the second one “the stone of distinction”: the first one is to be carried out, and the second one is to be brought in. Then the word of the Lord came to me: "The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you. "Who despises the day of small things? Men will rejoice when they see the plumb line (the stone of distinction) in the hand of Zerubbabel (Zech 3:8-10). “The former stone” was what was contained in the Ark of the Covenant, and “the stone of distinction” is “the living stone”—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him, and “God’s solid foundation” with an inscription saying, “The Lord knows who are his,” and “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”

Pastor Dean starts the New Year off with a reminder that we as believers have a choice in serving God. We can follow after God with all our heart and reap the benefits and blessings promised. To the extent we do that, the year 2014 will be our best year yet. As Joshua said: As for me and my house, We will serve the Lord

VCL 16 The time had come for God's people, the children of Israel to enter the Land of Promise. As Joshua prepared on that last evening before the entrance, he was met be a unique stranger. Who was it, and for what purpose did this meeting occur. It was a profoundly impacting encounter, and we'll learn about it today as we join Pastor Phil in Joshua chapter 5.
As we begin our study in the book of Judges, we find that Judges is really the tragic sequel to Joshua. Whereas, in Joshua, we see victory and triumph; in Judges we find rebellion and defeat. Judges seems to begin well, with some tribes still going out and possessing the land, but we find that they begin to grow lazy. As Joshua dies, and those elders who were with him die off, the people begin to fall into great sin with the false gods of the people who had dwelt in the land before them. Throughout the book, we see a four part pattern of events: Israel's departure from God; God's chastisement; Israel's sorrow over their situation; finally, God's grace to the people.
As we look at Joshua 2, we find that these aren't dead words, but rather, words that are still relevant and powerful for today. As Joshua sends men to spy out the land again, he uses his past experiences to do it better, by sending only 2 men, and determining that they were going no matter what. As the men are in the city of Jericho, they are assisted by a woman named Rahab, who was a prostitute by trade. Rahab is given insight into the Lord's work of giving Israel the land.
