EPISODE 693: Behind the Mitten Road Trip -- Clare to LewistonIn this episode of "Behind the Mitten," hosts John Gonzalez and Amy Sherman celebrate a decade of exploring Michigan's hidden gems. They embark on a road trip adventure, visiting various local businesses, including Buccilli's Pizza in Clare, R & J's Best Choice Marketplace in Houghton Lake, and Jack's Place in Roscommon, where they highlight the importance of community and local flavors. The episode also features the Lewiston Hotel & Bar, showcasing its award-winning fish fry and new menu items, emphasizing the unique experiences Michigan has to offer.Segment 1: Co-owner Shari Buccilli of Buccilli's Pizza in Clare tells the story how her husband's family moved from Detroit and started the award-winning pizzeria in 1973 with only $1,500. Segment 2: Our next stop is at R&J's Best Choice Marketplace of Houghton Lake where we meet Joycelyn Alexander, who tells us more about this "Pure Michigan" destination that features products from all over the state, including a variety of their top-selling Feta cheese. Amy calls herself "a Feta girl" and wants to enter the annual contest in December to win a year's worth of Feta. Last year they sold 14,730 pounds of the cheese.Segment 3: A few years ago we traveled all over the state looking for great fish frys. We found one at Jack's Place in Roscommon, known for fresh Alaskan cod and a cool A-frame bar. The fish is never frozen and flown in every week. We stopped in again, only to discover that Amy happen to know new co-owner Jason Christensen, who is originally from Amy's hometown in downriver Detroit. We learned more about how Jason and his partner Ashley Reynolds came to own the bar. And of course, we had to try the fish again. It was fabulous. Segment 4: Another one of our favorite fish frys was at the Lewiston Hotel & Bar, and it, too has new ownership. It was our final stop for the show. We sat at the bar and talked to Troy Willett, who tells us how he and his wife, Crissy, bought the bar a few years ago and updated it with a new menu, including gyros, poutine, more Mexican food items and the "Lewie Burger," a half-pound cheese burger that has become a top-seller. But the perch fish fry still brings them in because it's still the same, Troy said. They also offer 12 modest, very clean hotel rooms, making it a great place to spend the night. Prices are very afforable. That completes our Clare to Lewiston road trip!Chapters00:00 - Celebrating a Decade of Michigan Adventures01:14 - Road Trip Excitement: The Journey Begins02:38 - Exploring Clare: St. Patrick's Day Festivities04:01 - Buccilli's Pizza (Clare): A Local Favorite10:30 - Michigan Maple Festival: Sweet Traditions12:51 - R & J's Best Choice Market (Houghton Lake): Michigan Goods Galore20:57 - Jack's Place (Roscommon): Fresh Fish and Community Vibes35:41 - The Lewiston Hotel (Lewiston): A New Chapter in HospitalityLearn more about Behind the Mitten at amyandgonzo.com.

This week on PopHealth Week, Fred Goldstein had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Ashley Reynolds, Chief Product and Experience Officer at Glytec, a health tech company revolutionizing the management of glycemic control in healthcare settings. With a dynamic career path that began in the Navy as a corpsman and evolved through nursing, emergency care, and a Ph.D. in digital health, Ashley brings a unique perspective to the healthcare industry. His journey is a testament to his passion for transforming patient care through technology. Ashley's journey into healthcare began in an unexpected way. Originally a pre-med student, financial constraints led him to join the military, where he served as a Navy corpsman—essentially a combat medic. This early experience laid the foundation for his nursing career, where he worked in intensive and critical care settings. It was here that he discovered a passion for understanding the "why" behind patients' health conditions. This curiosity led him to pivot into population health and eventually to pursue a Ph.D. focused on how digital tools can drive behavioral change in healthcare. Over the years, Ashley has held leadership roles in health tech startups and healthcare systems, leading to her current role at Glytec, where he oversees product and customer experience with a focus on leveraging technology for better clinical outcomes.

In a shocking development surrounding the tragic death of 16-year-old Preston Lord at a Halloween party last year, new revelations have emerged of an alleged attempt by the family of one of the accused attackers to conceal him from authorities. Seventeen-year-old Talan Renner, one of seven suspects facing charges in connection with Lord's death, was allegedly hidden away at his family's cabin in Show Low, Arizona, by his father, Travis Renner, in the days following the fatal incident.  According to reports, Talan Renner, along with the other six accused, faces first-degree murder and kidnapping charges. The suspects have all pleaded not guilty and are being held on $1 million bond. The tragedy unfolded on October 28, 2023, during a Halloween party in Queen Creek, which attracted over 100 teenagers and prompted multiple 911 calls from concerned neighbors. It was during this event that Lord was fatally beaten, dying in the hospital two days later. Police have charged the suspects, alleging they were involved in a violent altercation that resulted in Lord's death. A witness told police that when Lord was “on the ground, the group of kids began recording and ‘humping' the individual” while he laid their dying “before they all ran away.” His father's ex-girlfriend disclosed the alleged attempt to hide Talan Renner. She shared with authorities that Talan Renner was moved to the remote cabin to allow time for his hands to heal, reportedly after being involved in the altercation that led to Lord's death. Ashley Reynolds, a former employee at Relentless Media Agency, where she worked under Talan's father, Travis Renner, has come forward alleging her involvement in a cover-up following the tragic incident involving Preston's critical injuries. Reynolds stated to the Arizona Republic that Renner and Adam Kifer, CEO of Relentless Media Agency, openly discussed plans to conceal evidence and shift blame onto another individual with a similar name. According to Reynolds, Renner and Kifer allegedly orchestrated a plan to take Talan to a remote cabin until the injuries he sustained during the altercation healed. Detectives noted the Renner family's financial capability to assist in fleeing to Mexico, prompting Talan's removal from the Phoenix area following the attack on Preston. To further conceal Talan's involvement, Reynolds claimed she was instructed to falsify electronic calendar entries to create the appearance that Talan was out of town on the day of the Halloween party. Additionally, she stated that Renner and Kifer devised a plan for Renner to distance himself from the company to mitigate potential legal ramifications. Despite the severity of the accusations against Talan Renner, he reportedly participated in extracurricular activities. In a disturbing revelation, it was disclosed that Renner's football coach at American Leadership Academy, Gilbert North, allowed him to play in a game even after he became a person of interest in Lord's murder. Concerns were raised, prompting the termination of the coach. The additional six suspects charged in connection with Lord's death have been identified as Talyn Vigil, William Owen Hines, Dominic Turner, Taylor Sherman, Treston Billey, and Jacob Meisner. All seven suspects have maintained their innocence. The case continues to unfold, with all seven suspects scheduled to appear in court on April 30. All are charged as adults. Endocannaba-What?! Maybe you’ve heard about the latest trend of CBD or Cannabidiol,  the hemp-derived dietary supplement sweeping the wellness industry.  What quality assurance do you need to look for to pick the right product for you. How do you know what product to start with? Throw an even bigger wrench into that decision, now we have CBG or Cannabigerol, the next greatest Cannabinoid. Should you include this new cannabinoid in your wellness toolbox? Tune in with your cannacuriosity turned all the way up! On this show, you'll hear from CBD, TED talk expert Ashley Reynolds as we cover: Science of the benefits of CBDWhat is CBG and why should we pay attention to it?Some companies are touting the benefits of nano - CBD for better effects. Is it hype? How do people know how much to use, including how much to use on the skin? Are there contraindications? What does it mean if you don't "feel anything"? Honestly, I used to have shelves full of supplements. Some people have a microwave shelf, I had a supplement shelf! Nowadays I have very few supplements that I choose to take regularly. CBG is the new kid on the block and much to my surprise, it supports me during heavy "ascension" upgrades where my sleep gets disturbed. I was quite surprised! So that's why I wanted Ashley, our guest, to share more about this interesting compound. I've tried other CBD's before and I didn't really feel anything, but CBG from Elmore Mountain Therapeutics actually works! My husband loves the stuff. And guess what? In case you want to try it, I got you a coupon code, DRKAREN10!

Heavy Metal Africa. Three words that for many of us in the western world may not normally see together. For the past couple of decades however, metal music has been slowly finding a place in the lives of many across the continent of Africa and continues to grow in popularity, challenging stereotypes and cultural norms. Helping to bring the stories of metal fans and musicians from the continent to the global stage, Edward Banchs might not initially appear to be a likely suspect when you think of someone who has an extensive knowledge of continent of Africa. Equipped however with a BA in Political Science from Florida Atlantic University, and an MA in African Studies from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, Edward has been able to use his formal education and love of metal to bring these important stories to a larger audience in a way that gives a deserving and appropriate spotlight to those sharing them. The challenging stereotypes that many metal fans have had to face over the years are commonly shared in Africa as well. Not only are there local issues of perception but also awareness and opportunity to listen and perform music. Metal musician specifically in Africa have the additional battle and debate surrounding whether to incorporate cultural music influences into their songs or push more toward a global sound to avoid being seen as a novelty which is a constant hurdle. Edward's trips to Africa over the years has seen him interact with some incredible people. In Heavy Metal Africa, Edward finds himself in countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, Madagascar and Zimbabwe which only begins to scrape the surface when it comes to the impact that metal music is having. The book goes into great depth and touches on the personal successes as well as struggles of those who live in parts of the world that many of us have never experienced. When I caught up with Edward we spoke a great deal about the book, his background and where his interest in African culture comes from. We talk about some of those first metal encounters that Edward had in Africa and like any good conversation about the genre, we trade some of our personal favourite moments in metal. You don't need to be a fan of metal music to enjoy Heavy Metal Africa. The way Edward has documented his journey in the continent is presented in a way that opens up the various cultures and ways of life that these metal fans and musicians are living. It's a real fascinating read and certainly fires you up if you call yourself a bit of a metal fan. You can grab Heavy Metal Africa in both paperback and kindle via Amazon. All links to the book and videos from some of Edward's favourite African metal bands can be found in the show notes.
