In today's episode, we are happy to hear from our clinic's Dr. Scott and one of his patients, Keith about his successful experience tackling gut health issues. Keith's case posed a very common conundrum that we've seen in many with gut health issues - are we dealing with bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), fungal overgrowth (candida) or potentially both? We'll walk through some of the key indications that Keith's initial SIBO diagnosis was actually a candida case, and we'll cover the best testing and treatments that led to Keith's recovery.  Need help navigating your digestive or other health conditions? Welcome to the Dr. Shawn Baker Podcast. In today's episode, we are joined by Dr. Andrew Koutnik, a leading researcher in the field of biomedical sciences with a strong background in exercise physiology. Dr. Koutnik shares his insights as a type one diabetic who has dedicated his career to researching this condition, particularly the effects of low-carb and ketogenic diets on exercise performance and diabetes management. In this discussion, we dive into the controversial claims surrounding the potential for low-carb and carnivore diets to prolong the honeymoon period in type one diabetes. Dr. Koutnik provides a comprehensive overview of the current treatment landscape, including the promising developments in immunomodulatory drugs and their potential to extend the honeymoon period for patients. We also explore the significance of glycemic control and its relation to long-term health outcomes for diabetics, comparing the roles of technology and diet in managing blood glucose levels. Dr. Koutnik shares his personal experience and knowledge, drawing on ten years of data from his own life to illustrate the impact of a low-carb diet on diabetic health over the long term. Other highlights include: The infamous velocity diet. Avoiding carbs at night because “science.” Overcomplicating the simple stuff. Believing the more supplements, the better. We share these stories not just to entertain, but to help you avoid the same traps we fell into. If you're looking to simplify your health and fitness journey while having a good laugh, this is the episode for you.

This week on PopHealth Week, Fred Goldstein had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Ashley Reynolds, Chief Product and Experience Officer at Glytec, a health tech company revolutionizing the management of glycemic control in healthcare settings. With a dynamic career path that began in the Navy as a corpsman and evolved through nursing, emergency care, and a Ph.D. in digital health, Ashley brings a unique perspective to the healthcare industry. His journey is a testament to his passion for transforming patient care through technology. Ashley's journey into healthcare began in an unexpected way. Originally a pre-med student, financial constraints led him to join the military, where he served as a Navy corpsman—essentially a combat medic. This early experience laid the foundation for his nursing career, where he worked in intensive and critical care settings. It was here that he discovered a passion for understanding the "why" behind patients' health conditions. This curiosity led him to pivot into population health and eventually to pursue a Ph.D. focused on how digital tools can drive behavioral change in healthcare. Over the years, Ashley has held leadership roles in health tech startups and healthcare systems, leading to her current role at Glytec, where he oversees product and customer experience with a focus on leveraging technology for better clinical outcomes.

!Hola! Get ready to have that question answered as I, Rob Maxwell, guide you through the dynamic world of the glycemic index in this episode. Sugar: the stuff of celebratory birthday cakes and wellness myth. Without a doubt, it elicits some pretty major debate for a pantry staple…and we spend a lot of airspace talking about  how sugar affects the body. So, in this week's episode, I'm going to put on my Registered Dietitian hat and answer all of your burning questions about the sweet stuff, including, “Is sugar bad for you?” In order to answer that question, we're going to have to dive DEEP. Starting with what the heck sugar actually is and how the body metabolizes it. We're going to dive into the science and physiology of sugar, with a detour to cover alternative sweeteners like aspartame in order to arrive at the destination: how we should approach sugar in our everyday lives.  I hope you love this solo episode, our first of 2024! As always, we'll start with 3 of Desiree's current obsessions and close with a question from our community. On this episode we chat about: What is sugar, and how is table sugar different from the sugar in our bodies? How is the sugar we eat metabolized by our body? Is it okay for blood sugars to rise? Glycemic index vs glycemic load Is sugar inflammatory? Does sugar cause diabetes? Aspartame and cancer What you NEED to know about that erythritol and heart disease study How many added sugars should we eat daily? What about fruit? How to beat sugar cravings Support the Pod! Menopause is a natural biological process that occurs in women as they age, marking the end of their reproductive years. During this phase, women experience a range of symptoms due to hormonal changes, including hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, and increased risk of certain health conditions such as diabetes. Managing blood sugar levels becomes crucial during menopause, as fluctuations can have a significant impact on overall health and well-being. This is where Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) comes into play.   In this episode, I introduce the concept of CGMs and explore the benefits of wearing a CGM and how it can provide valuable insights into your body's response to different foods and activities. These innovative devices provide valuable data about our blood sugar levels, allowing us to make informed decisions about our health. By tracking your glucose levels continuously, you can make more informed choices about your diet and lifestyle, ultimately leading to better overall health and vitality.   As always, this episode emphasizes the power of community and support. If you found this information helpful, I encourage you to share it with your friends. Together, we can rise and empower more women to take charge of their health and create the most exceptional life on our terms.     Key Takeaways: [00:02:40] CGMs explained. [00:04:09] Glycemic load and microbiome. [00:07:40] CGMs and blood glucose drivers. [00:11:11] Impact of exercise on glucose levels. [00:14:40] Poor sleep and blood sugar. [00:18:12] Glucose monitoring and body temperature. [00:22:24] Foods with reduced blood sugar impact. [00:26:39] Protein and meal timing. [00:29:36] Long-term fasting and blood glucose. [00:33:32] CGMs provide valuable biohacking data. [00:37:06] CGM and personalized insights.     Memorable Quotes "Now, there are four major things that are gonna affect your blood sugar. So, obviously diet. Your physical activity, exercise, physical movement, you know, those kinds of things. Your stress level and what's happening in your life. And then also your sleep. Those are the four major drivers of blood glucose, and that's the real reason why I think CGMs are fabulous." – Betty Murray   "The ultimate thing of what you need to understand is that speed in which your blood sugar goes down, there's one hormone responsible for that, insulin, right? So, if I have a spike of my blood sugar and it drops fairly rapidly, I know that I have a pretty healthy insulin response or in some cases, in my case, I would say I have a pretty robust, maybe a little overly robust insulin response. We want insulin to do its job, but of course we don't need insulin to spike heavily. " – Betty Murray     Website Living Well Dallas Hormone Reset Betty Murray   Socials  Facebook Instagram
