Ferry Wijnhoven's beer life began in typical Dutch fashion, with a Heineken. He could even see the brewery on his daily commutes. But he gradually discovered the new variety of beer in the Netherlands, where there are now almost 1,000 breweries. He also expressed his enthusiasm on social media, until his relatives cut him off as a friend because all they could see on their timeline was beer. That was the reason why Ferry eventually started his own Facebook group, which grew from 20 members to almost 17,000 in no time and is now the largest beer community in the country. In BierTalk, we talk about this fascinating story and the people behind it...
Thomas Sjöberg is from Belgium, now lives in Finland and has his fiancée in the USA. Together with his job as a brewery consultant and beer judge, this takes him around the world several times a year. During his youth, he discovered Belgian Trappist beers and decided to make it more than a hobby. After moving to Finland, the opportunity arose to jump on the slow-starting craft beer bandwagon. Along the way, he completed almost every beer sensory training course there is. Finally, the first job in a brewery in Estonia followed by one in Sweden and next the job as Head Brewer in Estonia at another brewery. In the podcast, Thomas talks about this exciting journey and his current projects....
Marty Nachel is an experienced BeerJudge, writer and brewing consultant. In the early 1980s, he visited Toronto, Canada, with his wife and took the first brewery tour of his life, tasting an unexpectedly aromatic beer. Since then, the barley juice never let him go, he became a home brewer and today beer is his life. In the podcast he tells his exciting story and reveals the stories behind it...
David Anderson started his beer career as a home brewer in 1992 and developed the concept for his own brewery, the Brewfarm. Belgian-style beers were to be the focus there. After the initial ideas in 1995, he set about implementing them, developing beer recipes and buying a plot of land. But the implementation finally succeeded at another location, but the property provided the start-up capital. The Brewfarm quickly became a focal point for the local community and, of course, the center of David's life. Recently, he was able to sell the brewery and now devotes himself to his new passion: traveling the world as an International Beer Judge...
Gordon Strong was inspired by friends to take up home brewing, launching a veritable hobbyist career. He quickly found his way to the BJCP, the Beer Judge Certification Program, until he became its president. In the interim, others have taken the helm, but Gordon has kept his pet project, the evolution of the Style Guidelines, to himself. As Grandmaster Judge, he travels the world gathering the information that keeps the compendium alive. In the podcast, he tells his story and also explains the background of the BJCP and how all beer lovers can contribute to the Style Guide....

Join Jimmy on his inaugural visit to Buffalo, NY with our guide Ethan Cox, co-founder and co-owner of Community Beer Works. Returning guest Ethan is an esteemed brewer, beer judge, beer history writer, and overall authority on beer in the state of NY.Ethan details the journey from homebrewer to Community Beer Works, which started after he got immersed in Irish pub culture while studying abroad. After coming back to Boston, the next step for Ethan was buying a beer making kit. From there, Ethan trekked up state to Buffalo, NY where he joined local home brewing clubs. There was only one brewery in Buffalo when Ethan moved there - all the historic breweries in town went out of business in the early 70's - and he saw a gap in the beer scene that needed filling. That took the form of Community Beer Works, which started as a nano-brewery (just 3 half-kegs per batch!), but has grown into an award-winning institution of Buffalo's West Side.If you want to dig deeper into Buffalo beer, check out “Buffalo Beer: The History of Brewing in the Nickel City”, by Mike Rizzo and Ethan Cox.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network.

Today on the Utah Beer News Podcast you’ll hear from one of Utah’s relatively few certified beer judges. Jae Vanderwerf, who grew up in Portland and who spent some time in Minnesota, is no stranger to vibrant beer towns. When she arrived in Salt Lake about 18 months ago, she immediately fell in love with the craft beer scene here. Even before landing in Utah, Jae had passed a pair of tests as part of the Beer Judge Certification Program. That’s to say, she had already earned her stripes as a certified beer judge. In 2020, Jae sought a way to give back to the beer — specifically, the homebrew — community that had given her so much joy. So, she began teaching a class to share her exemplary beer-tasting knowledge with others. In this episode of the podcast we talk about: Jae’s passion for craft beer and homebrewing What it takes—step-by-step—to properly judge a beer And how you can deepen your appreciation for craft beer by participating in a tastings class By the way, stay tuned—in an upcoming “Bonus” episode, Jae will take Utah Beer News listeners along for the ride as she judges a local craft beer. Thank you to Jae for taking the time to talk with Utah Beer News. And thank you for listening. Live from HomebrewCon 2017, Brian and JP are joined by Mead judge Al Joyce, who was dressed as some sort of Game of Thrones mead drinker. Trust us, it was oddly cool. Al is a GrandMaster Level 6 Beer Judge, which blew our minds a bit, but he is also an official Mead Judge! Which it turns out is a good thing, since we had a melomel on the show from Brian's brother Jimi Cooper. For our second beer, we had a Brown Ale made with Minnesota Wild Rice from Walt Pittack. Finding a love for all beer and diving into homebrewing back in the ‘87, Ron has won numerous awards on the state level as well as a Gold Medal in the AHA’s National Homebrew Competition, the largest homebrewing competition in the world.
