Erin and Ben Napier didn’t plan on becoming household names. They were just trying to build a beautiful life in their beloved hometown of Laurel, Mississippi, one house, one neighbor, one Main Street at a time. In this heartwarming conversation, Kate talks to the stars of HGTV’s Home Town about what happens when our plans fall apart and something even better takes root. They reflect on the surprising twists that led from political aspirations and magazine dreams to woodworking, parenting, and a television show that celebrates belonging. Along the way, they explore how creativity is born out of necessity, making a home, building a community, and loving the place where you are. In this episode, they discuss: The ache and joy of making a home in the place that raised you How small acts of community build a life The beauty of third places and why talking to strangers still matters If you liked this episode, you may also like: Angela Williams on The Caring Power of Community Sharon McMahon, Drops Make an Ocean Priya Parker on The Art of Gathering Watch clips from this conversation, read the full transcript, and access discussion questions by clicking here or visiting katebowler.com/podcasts. Landon Bryant stopped by the Southern Living offices recently, and it was for the staff to meet him in person after a couple of years watching his hilarious videos on our accents, traditions, quirks, and why we have endless recipes for potato salad. Landon was born and raised in the small town of Laurel, Mississippi, a close-knit community that was made famous in recent years by past guests Erin and Ben Napier—whom Landon happens to know. His great-grandmother was a major influence on him, but it was his wife, Kate, who encouraged him to start sharing his opinions about Southern identity on Instagram. Now, he's come out with a new book, Bless Your Heart: A Field Guide to All Things Southern, that distills his unique perspective into a clever, smart, and deeply entertaining guide to the culture. Landon talks to Sid about the time he went to high school in a Walmart, his experience as an art teacher, his openness about struggles with ADHD, and just what exactly got him in hot water when talking about deviled eggs and grits. In the episode, Josiah flounders a bit because he's dumb and didn't re-read the article before the episode, but the gist is that Greg Burroughs, a man with a repeated history of abuse, had allegedly murdered his girlfriend, Katherine Sinclair. He called the local judge (who he was friends with) before he called 911 and multiple other strings were pulled to get him out of trouble. The author of the opinion piece, Jim Cegielski, claims he had local advertisers pull out because he chose to cover the story. As the stars of HGTV's hit show "Home Town," Erin and Ben Napier have created a variety of ways to enrich the lives of others - from taking "sad homes and making them happy" as their daughter Helen describes their home renovation television program, to building a business highlighting American-made craftsmanship called "The Laurel Mercantile." But now the Napiers are adding a new project to their palette, a nonprofit platform to connect parents who want to help their children have "social media free" childhoods called "Osprey" which stands for "Old School Parents Raising Engaged Youth." The grass root effort is not only inspired by Erin and Ben's love for their own two daughters, but a reflection of shared experiences and values of close friends and family. As Erin and Ben say in the interview - Osprey helps us build nests for our kids - "so they can soar." For someone who never watches HGTV, Denise sure knows A LOT about the hosts of their shows. James knew nothing about Laurel, Mississippi or the show "Home Town," but you best believe he knew Erin and Ben Napier's names by heart by the time we left! Our first night in this growing town was overshadowed by a grungy hotel in a not-so-great area, but charming Downtown Laurel awaited us the next morning. We were greeted by a few locals, Landon and Kate Bryant, who are the geniuses behing the Southern-centric, uber-successful @landontalks channels on TikTok and Instagram. We all piled into their car for our own special tour of the neighborhoods around Laurel and it certainly did not disappoint. Tell your "mom 'n them" that what we found in Laurel was a new surprise around every corner. Here lies a town that is charming, ripe with potential and overflowing with civic pride. Spoiler alert: Our prediction is that, in 5 years, some people are going to be REALLY glad they put skin in the Laurel game. Check out our YouTube channel for our "Ask a Local" segments and videos you can't find here on the audio platform. As always, please share, REVIEW and rate our show if you like us... and of course you can skip this part if you don't! Stalk us on all sorts of platforms here. #emptynest #fulltank
