(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) We continue to explore how we might practice metta (and other heart practices) in a way integrated with mindfulness, wisdom, and insight, building on last week's session. We begin looking at some of the ways historically and culturally that the "mind" and "reason" have been separated from emotion, dating from Plato and the Greeks, and continued in the modern world with the understanding of reason and science as separate from emotion (and the body). This has been a major part of our social and cultural conditioning, evident in how mainstream education occurs, and also linked with gender conditioning. We also examine how, dating from Buddhaghosa's text, the Visuddhimagga (The Path of Purification), from the 5th century, metta and compassion has been labeled as practices leading to concentration, and not as linked directly with wisdom and awakening. This has been the basis for the 20th century Burmese approaches to metta and mindfulness, which have been the main influences in the West. However, when we look to the Buddha's actual teachings, as well as later Mahayana and Vajrayana teachings, we find much more of a connection between metta, compassion, and wisdom. We can see this in a number of texts which we explore, including ones in which the heart practices are seen as leading directly to wisdom, and development in awakening. In the last part of the talk, we explore ways that we can, in our formal and informal practices, integrate metta and wisdom. The talk is followed by discussion.

(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) We often hear that the heart of the teachings and practice is to connect wisdom and compassion, clear seeing and the kind heart, developing what Jack Kornfield calls the "wise heart." Yet such a connection or integration can be challenging in several ways. First of all, we have major conditioning in modern Western culture to separate the "mind" and the "heart" (or emotions), as well as the body. Also we find tendencies in the Theravada tradition to see Metta practice as separate from Insight practice, as in the way that Buddhaghosa in the influential text, the Visuddhimagga, lists Metta practice as a form of Concentration practice, and in some of the ways that Metta is taught as a complement to insight practice in the West. In this talk, we begin to explore what it might look like to integrate more fully Metta and wisdom, mindfulness, and insight, both in formal practice and daily life. The talk is followed by discussion.

SBT - Sutra Studies - The Dhammapada  The Dhammapada(verses of buddhadharma) is a collection of sayings of the Buddha in verse form and one of the most widely read and best-known Buddhist scriptures. The original version of the Dhammapada is in the Khuddaka Nikaya, a division of the Pali canon of Theravada Buddhism. The Buddhist scholar and commentator Buddhaghosa explains that each saying in the collection was made on a different occasion in response to a unique situation that had arisen in the life of the Buddha and his monastic community. His translation of the commentary, the Dhammapada Atthakatha, presents the details of these events and is a rich source of legend for the life and times of the Buddha. The Dhammapada contains 423 verses in 26 chapters. We'll be covering its 26 chapters within 26 weeks. Venerable Tarpa is an American Buddhist monk ordained in the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition. Ven.

Alan starts the session with a brief introduction of the meaning of the aspiration of immeasurable equanimity and its etymology. Further, Alan elaborates on the differences of equanimity among the different vehicles. In the context of the sravakayana, which is focused on the selflessness of persons (the emptiness of an autonomous, independent and permanent self), they realize the emptiness of self but not the emptiness of the skandhas, as they consider they are truly existent. Therefore, the practice of equanimity is for the sake of one’s own liberation, to purify their minds and attain nirvana in order to get rid of samsara. It is interesting to see that according to Buddhaghosa, the catalyst for equanimity is taking responsibility for one’s own actions. It is based on recognizing how karma works. Virtue brings happiness and non-virtue brings suffering. In the mahayana context, in which wisdom and compassion work together as the two wings of a bird to fly, not only the self is empty of inherent existence but also the five skandhas. Because everything is mutually interdependent, there is no self without others and no others without self. Therefore, there is no difference between self and others. In this way, the realization of emptiness deepens the sense of equality between self and others and vice versa. Equanimity is an aspiration based in bodhicitta. From dzogchen perspective and having an insight into rigpa, one apprehends what is close as pristine awareness. And one apprehends what is far as samsara, especially when viewing others’ behavior and mental afflictions. Then, one generates the aspiration to release the preference for nirvana, which is what one has already tasted, and abide in equanimity without preference for samsara or nirvana, for adversity or felicity. In dzogchen, equanimity is the equality of samsara and nirvana. All displays of samsara and nirvana are equally pure, samsara being a display of rigpa. Meditation starts at 40:17

Fall 2013 Shamatha and the Bodhisattva Way of Life

We immediately start with a meditation session. After the guided meditation, a question comes up about the role of pain in meditation, based on a comment from an abbot who claimed that pain is a goal to reach Nirvana, and a comfortable position during meditation is not suitable for reaching Nirvana. Dr. Wallace goes into this question using references from the Pali Canon, Theravada tradition and Tibetan tradition. He shows that such a claim about pain as a goal to Nirvana is nowhere to be found. On the contrary, adopting a position that is most suitable during meditation is strongly recommended (Buddhaghosa). Meditation starts at: 0:35

Alan gives the remaining two of Buddhaghosa's fourfold analyses of the four immeasurables, those of empathetic joy and of equanimity. The analyses consist of the false facsimile, the diametric opposite, the immediate catalyst, and the sign of success of each quality. Silent meditation not included.

This afternoon we continue with unguided meditations. Alan first reviews the meditation on loving-kindness for others in the tradition of Buddhaghosa, first for oneself, then a dearly loved friend, then a neutral person, and finally a difficult person. Alan also invites us to hold space to see who else might arise and attend to them with loving-kindness. The unguided meditation begins at 17:40 in the recording, and Q&A begins at 45:30. This is followed by these practical questions from the group: 1. We have been using the visualization of the orb of light at the heart center. I'm finding that my heart is becoming tender and actually physically sore. I'm wondering if this happens, and whether I might be trying too hard? 2. When balancing earth and sky or earth and wind, do we have to use the infirmary for the earth element, or can we use breathing at the abdomen? 3. Regarding attending to more than one thing at a time. I notice, during meditation, it seems like I am attending to two things at the same time, for example, the breath and a thought. However, I know that it isn't possible to attend to two things at the same time. So I am curious about the nature of attention, and how it is that I feel like I am both with the breath and with the thought.

Alan Wallace begins today's teaching with a 40-minute dharma talk that could be titled, "Retreat and Expedition Approaches to Freedom from Blatant Suffering." In this engaging talk, Alan surveys the history of these approaches and explores the mechanisms and effects of shamatha and vipassana. He then guides a meditation on compassion, first wishing ourselves freedom from blatant suffering, then on to others, working both spatially and allowing others to simply appear, "invite themselves in," to our meditation. The guided meditation begins at 41:00 in the recording. He answers two questions from the group, the first of which refers to the notes available on the Santa Barbara Institute's website at http://sbinstitute.com/PodcastNotes/PodcastNotes.html and is titled "Three New Methods." 1. Could you explain the following excerpt from Buddhaghosa's commentary on Sati, especially the underlined parts. "Its characteristic is not floating; its property is not losing; its manifestation is guarding or the state of being face to face with an object; its basis is strong noting or the close applications of mindfulness of the body and so on. It should be seen as like a post due to its state of being set in the object, and as like a gatekeeper because it guards the gate of the eye and so on." 2. What do you mean (in Chapter 4 of Attention Revolution) by saying that, "[Through the achievement or the power of mindfulness at stage 4] the practice comes into its own." Could you use a synonym for that?

In this guided meditation, we follow in the footsteps of Buddhaghosa, expressing loving-kindness sequentially, from ourselves, to a very dear loved one, a more casual loved one, and then out and out until all barriers are broken down and our wish for others' well being is equally distributed. Alan also reminds us that the use of visualization during this meditation is not fundamentally required. The guided meditation begins at 12:05 in the recording. Alan then speaks freely for a short time about the skill of lucid dreaming, following up on his brief introduction on lucid dreaming that was given at the very end of yesterday evening's teaching (#42). Alan then answers these questions from the group: 1. You spoke of the "eyes of wisdom" during this guided meditation. I find that I'm not sure I'm using the eyes of wisdom when examining others - especially neutral people - because I find it is easier to see some endearing qualities than others, and I imagine the eyes of wisdom are equanimous. Can you elaborate on the expression of the eyes of wisdom? 2. In the awareness of awareness practice, we are focusing on the awareness that moves with the breath. If we are aware of this awareness that is moving with the breath, sometimes I have an experience of something sucking the awareness… 3. In the phases of mindfulness of breathing, you encourage a balance of relaxation, stability and vividness. I find I'm able to maintain this balance fairly well. If I want to apply this balance to the practice of settling the mind, how would I do that? 4. When meditating in the supine position, I feel like the ground is shaking under me - like there is an earthquake - quite often. What is this?

This afternoon Alan deepens into the subject of Loving-Kindness. He cites sources from the Mettā Sutta  found in the Pali Canon; the Visuddhimagga (The Path of Purification) written by Buddhaghosa , and, of course from the Buddha itself when he says we shouldn’t doubt the Four Immeasurables as explained in the Kalama Sutra. Explains that what we are cultivating an aspiration, that the object of this discursive meditation are all sentient beings. He then guides the meditation saying that we could use the liturgies like a starter for the meditation in Loving-Kindness. Más... Sin comentarios

We start with a great introduction on the Four Inmeasurables and how they interrelate based on Buddhaghosa and the Tibetan Buddhism perspective, including the "faux facsimiles" or close but very distorted versions of the 4I (yes! I finally found an abbreviation that I will be using from now on) and some commentary on how to remedy the delusion about thinking that we will be the lucky ones in samsara. After finding that Loving Kindness is the cure for that, we go into a great, deep practice to "get real."Afterwards there is some reflection on the practice and a few misc. Q&A.This samsaric picture by Malcolm was taken before the retreat. This will probably be the only beach picture you see from us!
