He served in the army's counterintelligence corps where, as it turns out, he saw some remarkable and horrific things. Then  possibly got brainwashed by Nazis? I'm legitimately not joking; he was at least in the position to be brainwashed. After that, he married a Nazi spy and brought her to the US. I discuss his spiritual dilettantism, and then I go over the Joyce Maynard affair, pulling out a few very curious details that rarely get addressed. Then of course I talk about the curious role the Catcher in the Rye has played in various assassinations, and what might be in the novel that would catch the eye of an assassin. The Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung studied astrology for over 40 years, and was primarily interested in the way astrology could help to explore the psyche. For Jung, astrology represents the sum of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity. The notion of seeing mythic narratives through patterns in the heavens is one of the earliest attempts to link the outer world with the inner world. The well-known Hermetic dictum, “As above, so below,” is key to astrology. It is the idea that man (the microcosm), is influenced by the universe (the macrocosm). That is to say, truths about the nature of the cosmos may be inferred from truths about human nature, and vice versa. At the exact moment of birth, each person receives the typical qualities of the libido or energy which is characteristic of him or her. Time, or the moment understood as a peculiar form of energy, seems to coincide with our psychological condition. Religion is rebellion against yourself, each other, nature, and The Most High. Religion keeps those who follow it under the spell of “belief,” "faith,” “hope,” and “wishful thinking. How many people ask why there are countless religions? How many people ask why there are countless denominations within each religion? How many people ask why they can't question their cardinal, minister, pastor, preacher, priest, or pope? Religion destroys spirituality and replaces it with blind obedience rooted in abominations, deception, manipulation, and perversions. While the religious leaders and church get wealthier, the blind followers become poorer and will never own anything for themselves nor will they pass anything down to their children or lineage. We need to remove religion from our lives in order to restore the world. We need to live by the instructions, natural and universal laws, and seek The Most High in order to free ourselves from the mental, physical and spiritual shackles of religion. Gavin read Religious Studies and Social Anthropology at Lancaster University and taught at the universities of Wales (Lampeter) and Stirling before coming to Oxford. He was elected to membership of the British Academy in 2014. His research interests are in medieval Hindu texts (especially from the traditions of Shiva), comparative religion, and phenomenology. Some of you may remember Michael Joseph from episode 50, where he interpreted my natal chart for me, and then we rambled on about a few other things, including this idea that there may be more beyond what we consider the occult. A fun chat all around, one that I was extremely grateful to have, all things considered. But this one here is - well, there are some parallels, but it’s also quite different. There is some astrology talk near the end, but the bulk of this discussion centers around some of Mike’s work in his Occult Science video series on YouTube, which gives a comprehensive dissection of the belief system of the “elite”, which is based on the work of Helena Blavatsky. In his video series, Mike addresses the major differences between adept occultism, orthodox religion and mainstream scientism, and this chat serves as a nice introduction to his work. Of course I take issue with that word elite, so we argue about that a bit too. And we also talk some about my interpretation of Manly Palmer Hall’s book “The Secret Destiny of America”.
