Most fitness professionals are well aware of the challenges that exist trying to get clients to adhere to new health behaviors. In fact, this process can be quite frustrating for fit pros and clients, alike.  This challenge isn't lost on one of our guests in episode 70, Scott Schutte, a veteran fitness professional and personal training business owner. Rather than go it alone, like so many trainers, Scott discovered he could blend his skills as a fitness professional with the behavior science to improve client outcomes and the sustainability of his business. To do so, he partnered with Dr. Janine Stichter, a behavior strategist, to develop a system for fitness professionals to coach behavior change in clients, within their scope of practice. Their method was so effective in Scott's personal training business, they've spun it off into the Healthy Behavior Institute, that seeks to provide education and consulting for fitness professionals and businesses looking to implement this type of behavior change science approach to coaching clients. Our conversation dives into the utility of this type of methodology as well as tactics, practices, and considerations for operationalizing it into a personal training business.  Show Notes Page: https://www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/podcast/episode/70 Our Guests: Dr. Janine Stichter & Scott Schutte  Scott Schutte is a personal trainer, weight loss behavior coach, gym owner, and fitness educator. #18 The Mind of Skill, Part 4: Virtue as skills - Matt Stichter on self-regulation and virtue ethics

Regnfang

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2021 73:04

The present podcast is the fourth episode in a podcast-series, which we have named ‘The Mind of Skill'. As the name indicates, this series investigates the mental dimensions of skill—more precisely, it does so by interviewing a line of current experts.Besides being of interest in itself, the nature of skill is related to more general questions of human existence.  For example, many of the ancient Greek philosophers saw a clear link between virtue and skill: according to them, virtuous individuals who were capable of living well could in some sense also be seen as people who acquired the skill to live. In relation, Buddhist teachings often stress the virtuous and awakened person as a skilful person—skilful in ethics, concentration, and wisdom. This is, in many ways, highlighted in Zen Buddhist practice in which activities such as calligraphy, poetry, tea-making, and many other activities require a high level of skill. With this in mind, there seems to be a clear connection between skill and the good life. The hope is that this series can clarify some aspects of this connection and aspire the listener to explore it. The focus of this episode is on moral virtue more precisely—it is on the idea that moral virtue can be seen as a kind of skill. To introduce and outline this topic, the guest of the episode is philosopher Matt Stichter. Matt is associate professor in philosophy at Washington State University and has for many years done research in virtue theory.  In 2018, Matt published the book The Skilfulness of Virtue in which he presented a theory that proposed to understand moral virtues as skills playing an important role in human self-regulation. The interview with Matt discusses this idea concerning the training, execution, and domains of virtue. These matters are of relevance beyond philosophical theorising. Understanding the workings of the morally admirable person seems to have both relevance on an individual and collective level. Viewing virtue as a skill might enable us to move closer to such an understanding. We hope you enjoy the interview! Host: Victor LangeProduction: Heine VolderMusic: Victor Lange & Heine VolderPhoto: Victor Cornelius

In this episode of Power of a Positive Playlist, host John Chester talks with OBBM’s very own Susan Hamilton about the importance of music in business success, relationships, and harmony in life.Susan talks about how imperative it is to have music as a source of therapy to help protect the mental health of our business teams and staff and to motivate ourselves. Music is a footprint of business, says John. Depending on who owns the business and the type of music playing, it impacts our experiences and our behavior. As John points out, music has been used to manipulate and as a drug in various situations over the years. He says to really pay attention to the music playing and what is going on around you.People often use music to mask their own thoughts and inner voice. We usually avoid music that challenges us and lean toward music that enables us. We go to the music that feeds our feelings so we can stay in our comfort zone.As Susan says, we have a range of motion that we are comfortable with. We manipulate the degrees of highs and lows that give us that range of motion that we function in but we can change that range to get out of our comfort zone. It’s very introspective and subjective. As John says, it is like the difference between the thermometer and the thermostat, where the music is the thermostat.John is a board certified music therapist who has spent many years working in psychology. He says he would see the types of music people were listening to and realized it was enabling them to stay stuck. As he became an entrepreneur, he would see the music that Steve Jobs or Tony Robbins listened to and the correlation to their levels of success. As John points out, the depth of the soul is very important but you have to go where the light is.Per John, some music is social and some antisocial. Antisocial music can wire your brain where you just don’t resonate with the people around you. Resonance means you are in symphony and harmony with others or with your surroundings. The energy is positive. John says you can rob the world of your melody, and you have to get in harmony with your community. Susan points out that when we all bring our melodies together, we influence and work together in harmony.John creates positive playlists for individuals and for businesses. He spends time with each person to find out what they like, how much new music they are interested in, understand their goals, and what they expect from their music. John uses a free music awareness tracker at www.Ivorchester.com.John also has a new book out called Live Your Worth, which is about setting boundaries, avoiding burnout and increasing productivity. In this episode of Power of Positive Playlist, host John Chester talks with Paul Russo, host of Uncommon Sense in Local Business, about success principles in music.John is a board-certified music therapist with 26 years of experience in psychology. Music choices influence us socially and economically per John. Music is a different recipe for each person. They choose what influences them most, and then that influence impresses upon them psychologically. John says music can rewire your brain. As neural pathways get damaged, music can help the brain create new neural pathways and heal. Music increases the heart rate. It can also help with depression depending on the choice of music, but it can also create harm if listening to music that exacerbates a negative situation. People are looking for empathy, especially during hard times, and music can provide that empathy. John creates positive playlists for individuals and for businesses. He spends time with each person to find out what they like, how much new music they are interested in, understand their goals, and what they expect from their music. John uses a free music awareness tracker at www.Ivorchester.com. You can fill out a form and it gives you a baseline. John says that once the form is completed, he will get back with you to help you use music to reach your goals. He went from one thing to the next, continuing his interest in everything from drums, keyboards, guitar and more, and fostered a love of writing and performing with anything he could find. Paul only had a month of formal drum lessons, but he naturally applied himself and became ‘instrumental’, playing for weddings by the time he was 16 years old. He joined a band playing keyboard by 17, and before long he was touring across the nation. “I can make noise on anything.” ~ Paul KosovichHis music history included Pink Floyd, the Thunderbirds, and many others. Over the years he added country music to his mix.He had a lot of fun, enjoyed a lot of notoriety, and had experiences most dream about. But it had a darkside as he watched the drugs take their toll on his band and friends. Pretty soon, they were so high they couldn’t play at all. This story takes you on quite a ride! Don has been a pastor for 30 years, and a private practice counselor for 13 years and has seen the impact of lockdowns and isolation in both his congregation and his practice.Don describes himself as a counselor who happens to be Christian. He says was invited to his first calling as a pastor by God, and to his second calling by his need for an extra income stream and a passion for psychology. Don’s church, Open Bible Church, is now a virtual-only church, so their church home is on your computer.John and Don discuss the changes Don has seen since March when everything shut down. With everyone being home all of the time, many became caregivers in a way they had never been before and there was never any chance of reprieve from home or work. All of this combined led to unprecedented stress levels. If the stress can be managed in a timely manner, Don says, anxiety, depression, and toxicity in relationships can also be avoided. Don offers a few stress management techniques to help manage the stress our new normal has created.Live in the moment, because our only reality is in the moment.Rest, just take one day out of each week and do nothing.Balance, create a balance between home, work, family, and rest.Quality communication, especially between couples, is paramount.“The most powerful thing that can happen in communication is learning to listen”- Don BrightTo work with Don Bright, go to CounselorInPlanoTX.com, call 214-995-4550, and connect with him on Facebook, and LinkedIn. She's noticed that the combination of essential oils, music, and prayer, is a successful holistic approach to many ailments - including depression, anxiety, and many others routinely medicated. As a music therapist working in hospitals, rehabs, and pysch environments, John encounters patient's negative responses to frequencies that are clearly disruptive and has to change the music. Michelle has noticed this as well, and talks about how she's using tuning forks to recognize how vibrations are effecting MS, lupus, and more. This conversation takes 'good vibrations' to a whole new level!John points out that harmonics, the Pythagorean theorem, is the scientific explanation of how this works for healing. Our bodies are amazing, and we can have optimal health when we understand how energy works through resonance and has a very real impact both positive and negative on us. With over 25 years of success in psychiatric facilities as a music therapist, John has created several successful programs for addiction treatment, depression, PTSD to name a few. In Michelle's therapeutic environments, she's discovered we respond to frequencies all the time, and essential oils have a unique effect on our individual vibrations, too. Michelle is quick to point out that although they tend to have an unfavorable view in Christian religious circles, words like 'frequency', 'vibration', 'energy healing', and 'essential oil therapy' are not merely New Age doctrine. Our bodies are made of energy, and respond to electromagnetic frequencies, hydration, aromatherapy, and chromotherapy and others in the same way we respond to music through tempo, melody, harmony, and chords. Music can reflect or effect your atmosphere, but used correctly, it improves it. Michelle challenges us to walk in spiritual authority to experience the best life possible using all the tools in our toolbox and guided by Holy Spirit. In the natural, physical world, we are drawn to things that don't help us. With essential oils, the frequency and nutrition of the oil utilize the chemistry of our makeup to help on an emotional level. Power of a Positive Playlist Host John Chester shares the concept of music vitamins as he continues his entertaining and transformative discussion with fellow musician and VP of Retail Sales, Jeff Pinson. Most of us can easily associate a song, tune, or rhythm to a particular time in our lives. John and Jeff discuss this tangible way music continues to influence us well after the event or season, and has the power to enable both good and bad behaviors.Jeff Pinson discusses the background of Rush's Nobody's Hero lyrics and symbolism, and what it meant to him then - and now. How did this tribute impact him? You'll have to listen to find out! Does baggage come with music? Is it good or bad? Yeah. It all depends on how we've internalized it.Our strengths usually exist in multiple arenas. Strengths in math, science, music, and spirituality tend to exist in the same person. W hen you embrace a design philosophy, you'll find this connection a great business 'architectural' ability.Tempo impacts heart rate.Melody impacts hormones.Understanding the influence of each aspect of music will help you create an intentional dose of 'music vitamins' that can help your brain achieve desired results. Music becomes a campaign that goes with you on a journey."Be cautious," Jeff warns, "of the direction, that you want to go where it's going."Reach out to Jeff at Jeff.Pinson@hotmail.com, and find him on LinkedIn.Power of a Positive Playlist is recorded at The Trade Group showroom floor in Carrollton, TX. Do we really understand the music, the 'tunes' of our lives? Is it possible we're ignoring our inside audience? John Chester hosts Power of a Positive Playlist, and in this effervescent episode, John talks with fellow musician and VP of Retail Sales, Jeff Pinson. Music has multiple stories for every person, it's a matter of application. Like a medicine, or like a balm, people can apply - or misapply. Is music just an auditory wave? John and Jeff dispel that notion, and say rather, "It's more like a drug than anything else." People 'take' music passively, but it is actively shaping our emotions. "As a music therapist working with people dealing with depression, its easy to see how music can pick at a wound," says John, so how do we use music actively, to pump ourselves up? Or use it reflectively, for focus or calm? Long time friend and musician Jeff Pinson opens up this dialog with personal anecdotes from his life as an 80's music lover, keyboardist, parent and professional in the C-Suite. Listen in to this great conversation and let it take you back, so you can go forward enjoying memories and making your own positive playlist that position you for your greatest achievements. September, an kontakt@plattsport.de senden.
