Hey! Slacker! Are those Bugle Boy jeans you're wearing? There are so many brands from our childhood that have simply ceased to exist. Sometimes due to marketing failures, sometimes competition, but often due to an unwillingess to adapt and accept change. Worse yet, there are companies like Blockbuster who scoffed at an offer to invest in some little company called Netflix! Remember Excite? I bet you don't. They had a ridiculously low dollar investment opportunity for a stake in Google - less than a million dollars - only to eventually get bought out by AskJeeves (now Ask.com). Yikes!Plus, everytime we buy from Amazon, or Walmart, or Target, we are dancing on the graves of brands past. Tower Records. Circuit City. Borders. And a multitide of regional brands across the country (and the world). Although many were already on shaky ground, the inability to move into the online space sealed their doom. So, what were some of the chains, stores, and brand items that you miss? Take a listen and let me know what I missed!
Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Brian KalinecTexan Brian Kalinec has been called "a combination of Woody Guthrie, John Steinbeck, James Taylor, and Rodney Crowell in the stories he tells" in a review in music magazine Rootsy. He has also been described by Robert Bartosh of Roots Music Report as “one of the most creative songwriters from the Texas music scene". Brian has received a considerable recognition here and abroad, winning events such as the Songwriter Serenade Competition, the Big Top Chautauqua Song Contest, second place in the Woody Guthrie Song Contest and a finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest, to name a few. He was nominated for Songwriter of the Year and Musician of the Year in the Texas Music Awards in the recent past. He has appeared at the Kerrville Folk Festival, and venues such as Uncle Calvin's in Dallas, The Bugle Boy in La Grange, and as a featured guest on Rich Warren's Folkstage on WFMT in Chicago.
Hello friends! San Antonio, art-rock band, Buttercup and I sat down for a chat at legendary listening room, The Bugle Boy in La Grange, TX a couple of weeks ago for episode 1220! Their latest album, the self-reflective, Specks: An Autobiographical Record is available now wherever you stream or download your jams. Go to wearebuttercup.com for music, videos, show dates, social media links and more. We have a great conversation about the band getting started playing in art galleries, doing things "outside the box", playing a gay bar at 7 am, their recent northwest tour, how they plan their shows, hanging out together at an odd cable tv convention in the 90's, what made them make an autobiographical album and much more. I had a great time catching up with my old friends. I'm sure you will too. Find out more about The Bugle Boy at thebugleboy.org Thanks to Richard, Heather and everyone at The Bugle Boy for all of their help. Let's get down! If you feel so inclined. At long last, this week we're joined by our old friend the Mighty Orq, brilliant guitar player, songwriter, and tremendously talented vocalist who has been all over the Houston music scene for decades. Blaggards have been honored to share the stage with Orq and his band many times in the past and it is an absolute thrill to finally have him on the show. We talk about Orq's influences, songwriting, how his latest live album came together, and what's coming up next for his band. Orq is also a brilliant photographer and did our latest promo shots, but we didn't get around to talking about that this time. Once Tara and Pam have described the fashions they were sporting or coveting in March of 1988, we critique the cover, and then get into the fashion stories of Sassy's premiere issue, set on a boardwalk, at an old railyard, and in a palette of creams and beiges. What Next also forecasts coming fashion trends with pinpoint accuracy -- thanks, Michael Kors and Betsey Johnson! The beauty features teach you how to use bandanas and makeup; then About Face tells you about bang trims and hot oil treatments, and Body Talk warns you about gonorrhea, weed, and NutraSweet. After Elise gets a makeover (and WILDLY negged in the process), we take a quick trip through some of the issue's most memorable ads, including Benetton, Levi's, Cherry Lane trying to make bloomers happen, and which Sassy Club products we'd be bugging our mom to buy us. Today our guest is a really special and beloved friend of mine – Sandi Stuart. I met Sandi while I was studying IBP – or Integrative Body Psychotherapy – which I’ve talked about a variety of times on the show. Sandi was one of the teaching assistants for my class. So over the 3 years going through this program she was an incredible teacher and support system to me and I got to know her in such an intimate way. (Sadly this particular class is no longer offered- but there are many other resources I will provide in the show notes if you want to learn more about IBP) Sandi has been a trailblazer for women. She was one of the first female sales executives in the men’s clothing business. She started her career as an outsider and worked her way up the ladder becoming the executive vice president at Bugle Boy Industries. During her 25-year career at Bugle Boy, she helped the company grow from $0 to $500 million annually. Now she is the co-founder of Agency Licensing and also works as a life coach and leads workshops. In addition to consulting on issues important to women in business, Sandi focuses on providing and sharing practical consciousness for women entrepreneurs. Sandi is such a wise soul and someone who I deeply respect. She has so much insight to share. She has a thriving marriage, a great relationship with her daughter, a fulfilling and successful career and most importantly – a deep connection with herself. Today we talk about Sandi’s personal journey of self-discovery and healing. She shares: How her trauma as a child manifested in her body as an adult The connection between the body and our emotions How she reconnected with her authenticity Why she wore a baby carrier w no baby in it! Her experience working in a male dominant industry And much much more! We recorded this interview at Sandi’s beautiful home in Malibu, overlooking the mountains and the ocean. It was such an intimate chat. I hope you enjoy! For more info visit: www.schoolyoursoulpodcast.com
