For nearly 30 years Pamex has blazed a trail in the Irish Pharmaceutical industry. Its founder Tom Murphy was a leading figure in the pharma industry in the 1980's and early 1990's before being made redundant in 1994. Still in his early 40's and with a young family he found himself on the dole at a time when unemployment in Ireland was at a record high. Using his industry knowledge and backed all the way by his wife, Mary, the couple started the business that has built up a diverse portfolio of products that have made an immeasurable difference to the health and wellbeing of countless Irish people. Its first brand, Total Shaving Solution, has been joined by names such as Carmex lip balm, Alforex biotics, Kin Dental, Thea eyecare, and many more, with the result that this company from Castlebar continues to punch above its weight. This is the 25th episode with guest Tom Murphy, Founder / Chairman Pamex Limited, in the Davy podcast series 'Everyday Business with Aidan Donnelly'. This podcast brings you insightful conversation between Aidan Donnelly and entrepreneurs and business owners/management with their own unique story to tell. Please leave a review for others to know how you liked this book and podcast! I would be so grateful to you! In this episode: FAQ is: Amy asked: How can I create my trip? Today's Destination is Guangzhou, China Today's Mistake- Losing my sense of direction Travel Advice: Keep your lip balm handy. FAQ : Amy asked: How can I create my trip? Answer: How to create YOUR own trip is what you want to be. Start with writing out what you want to do. Put it on paper and you will see it, imagine it and then start beginning. Get a map and start looking for the destinations and things that get you excited. Talk to some friends who have been there and get some ideas on when the best time to travel would be for you. Then make plans, flights, sleeping arrangements, and transportation options. Today's episode destination is: Guangzhou, China This is located in southern China, not too far from Hong Kong. I spent a week in this city of 15 million people, which used to be called Canton, like the language of southern China, Cantonese. It is a bustling and busy industrial city for the most part. It was so modern, even more so than cities I know well. Most of my time was spent at the university, teaching. I was a guest lecturer at Sun Yat Sen University. It's Ranked 159 worldwide among universities. 23,000 graduate studentsTotal enrollment: 85,100 (2011) https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/sun-yat-sen-university Sun Yat-sen University, also known as Zhongshan University, is a public research university located in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. It was founded in 1924 by and named after Sun Yat-sen, a revolutionary and the founder of the Republic of China. Wikipedia Guangzhou has a maritime heritage stretching back over 2,000 years and its vast port is China's main transport and trading hub. It was also one of the starting points of the old Silk Road, a trading route that stretched across Asia. Want to know more about Guangzhou? Here's a few attractions I found by searching the city information. It's on the Pearl River and has architecture such as Zaha Hadid's Guangzhou Opera House, known as the “double pebble”; a carved box-shaped Guangdong Museum; and the iconic Canton TV Tower skyscraper, resembling a thin hourglass. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, a temple complex from 1894, also houses the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum. How did I get around the city by myself? Bus, train and subway. And I did a lot of walking. The subways were easy to follow and brought me around the city quickly.. I explored the city, got a hotel room and afterwards, I took a high speed train to Shanghai, which is an even larger city in the north of China. Seeing China by train is such an experience and you may love it too. I was able to really get to know the changes that were taking place in the countryside as well as in the larger cities with this kind of travel. Mistakes-Losing my sense of direction One of the things that I am terrible at is my sense of spatial direction. I wish it was different, but reality is true. I need to retrace my steps, my directions and I get lost a lot. One of the best things is my mobile app for directions. Get the cure for a bad sense of direction. Don't be like me. Travel Advice- Keep your lip balm handy. Many of us get dry lips and the best remedy is a stick that gives comfort, such as chapstick, Carmex, or other relief from chapped lips. Always apply balm before topping with gloss. The color from the gloss will adhere better to the balm's waxy texture. gloss can dry out and that dries out lips. Apply balm before gloss. Get some hydration and color is better. I want to bring meaning to your travels. Send me your travel tip. You can send it to my website, Facebook page, group, or Instagram. They needed to become more professional. So, what does a hippie do? They hired a 14-year-old to manage the books. This was before Clorox bought them for $925 million dollars. Today, there is a Burt's Bees Lip balm sold every second. This is a story that starts off the grid in Maine. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from Mom-and-Pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Dave Young: Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor which is, well it's us. But, we're highlight ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [Aurora Pro Services Ad] Dave Young: Stephen, I'm driving across West Texas a couple weeks ago, as one does. You're driving, the air is dry, my lips are getting chapped. So the next time I pull over to get gas, I'm wandering around looking at all the different ... There's Carmex, and there's Blistex. I don't know, I'm just bored of all of that stuff, it tastes like medicine. So I grabbed one called Burt's Bees. It worked, I liked it. I think it's the only thing I've ever bought that was Burt's Bees. Stephen Semple: Yeah, they have a lot of products today and that's who we're going to talk about. But, I want to give you an idea of how popular Burt's Bees lip balm is. Stephen Semple: There's a Burt's Bees lip balm sold every second. I'm not kidding. So by the time we're done this podcast, 500 Burt's Bees lip balms would have been sold. Crazy, eh? Dave Young: That's crazy. Yeah. My office that I'm recording this in would fill up with lip balm, by the time we were done. Stephen Semple: By the time we were done, right. Even though they're all little, it would still fill up. Dave Young: Wow, that's amazing. Stephen Semple: It is and it has a crazy history behind it. It was started by Burt Shavitz, Burt's, and Roxanne Quimby in Bangor, Maine in the mid-80s. But, she's been the main driving force behind the business, a real counter-culture, arts student, hippy homesteader. Stephen Semple: I'll give you an idea of how much they were hippies, because they were basically the poster children for being hippies. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: They started this business in the mid-80s, they incorporated in 1991. In 2004, 80% of the business was sold for $173 million. And then in late 2007, Clorox bought the company for $925 million, so just shy of $1 billion. She still had 20% of the business, so that was another 200 million in her pocket. Dave Young: She's doing okay. Stephen Semple: She's doing okay. But again, this is a crazy story about two hippies, who frankly had no interest in business, or money or things. Stephen Semple: So in the 1970s, Roxanne moves from New England to the West coast to attend art school, and she discovers the counter-culture. She meets a boyfriend, George Sinclair, at that time. They buy a van, and they fix it up and they head back East. They've got $3000 and they're going to buy some land. They go to Vermont, and they meet with a real estate out of Vermont who says, "This is Vermont, $3000 will get you nothing. Try Maine." Stephen Semple: So they go to Maine, for $3000 in Maine, they buy 30 acres of land in the fricking middle of nowhere and they build this simple house. No running water, no electricity, heated by a wood stove in fricking Maine. Dave Young: They're living the dream. Stephen Semple: Living the dream. They wanted to be part of this back to the land movement. They wanted to leave civilization. They wanted to have this idea where they needed very little money to live, they just needed money on food. At that point, they were living on $4000 a year. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple:

In this week's episode, we explore 'The Victoria Paris Effect.' A term coined by writer Kate Lindsay, 'The Victoria Paris Effect' speaks to the astronomical growth experienced by a new wave of TikTok vloggers who fit into the same mold— thin, white, pretty girls living in New York City that post off-the-cuff short-form vlogs multiple times a day. We share our theories on why TikTok is prioritising this type of content and consider what the algorithm is telling us about who is aspirational vs. who is relatable. Once Tara and Pam have described the fashions they were sporting or coveting in March of 1988, we critique the cover, and then get into the fashion stories of Sassy's premiere issue, set on a boardwalk, at an old railyard, and in a palette of creams and beiges. What Next also forecasts coming fashion trends with pinpoint accuracy -- thanks, Michael Kors and Betsey Johnson! The beauty features teach you how to use bandanas and makeup; then About Face tells you about bang trims and hot oil treatments, and Body Talk warns you about gonorrhea, weed, and NutraSweet. After Elise gets a makeover (and WILDLY negged in the process), we take a quick trip through some of the issue's most memorable ads, including Benetton, Levi's, Cherry Lane trying to make bloomers happen, and which Sassy Club products we'd be bugging our mom to buy us. Then: the Magazineyness! Jane's first Diary (her editor's letter) has a culturally insensitive lede but otherwise makes us want to keep reading. The letters to the editor in Say What are probably just as real as the ones in Help! And should Sara Walker, the subject of Inside Out (the magazine's inside back cover column for magazine production ephemera) who actually named the magazine itself, maybe have been its first cover model? Start thinking about how you can source these outfits on the cheap as you listen along! Visual Aids

From the Simplr studios in San Francisco, this is your daily briefing. IntroductionWith your Retail E-Commerce Briefing for today, Thursday, November 14th, I'm Vincent Phamvan. Is the VSCO girl trend powerful enough to reshape an industry? According to a new study, the beauty industry could be feeling the effects as teens turn away from heavy makeup and toward lighter, more socially-conscious alternatives.First, here are some retail headlines. U.S. Holiday Retail Sales May Top $1 TrillionAccording to an eMarketer forecast, U.S. holiday retail sales will climb 3.8 percent to top $1 trillion dollars in sales this year: the first-ever trillion-dollar holiday season. Last year saw even less growth, at 2.4 percent. Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest online shopping day in U.S. history, with a total that could approach or surpass $10 billion dollars. Brick-and-mortar remains dominant, representing over 80 percent of holiday sales. In-store sales will increase by 2 percent to $872 billion. E-commerce sales this holiday season will increase over $13 percent to $135 billion dollars.Facebook Introduce Payment ServiceFacebook is introducing a new payment service across its apps. The social media giant is rolling out Facebook Pay, which is designed to provide a secure and consistent payment experience across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Users can already make purchases, donations, and personal payments across the apps, but Facebook Pay is meant to streamline in-app purchases and enable unified, cross-app digital payments. The social media giant’s VP of marketplace and commerce said, “Facebook Pay is part of our ongoing work to make commerce more convenient, accessible and secure for people on our apps.” Walmart/Apple Partner on Voice-activated Grocery ShoppingWith the voice-activated shopping market expected to continue growing, Walmart is forming a partnership to make voice-activated grocery shopping easier than ever. The retail giant is partnering with Apple to make its voice order grocery shopping service available on Siri. Through a new Siri shortcut for online grocery, customers can ask the voice assistant to start adding items directly to their online Walmart grocery cart after they’ve paired their accounts. Walmart initially rolled out voice-enabled grocery shopping in a partnership with the Google Assistant device earlier this year. The retailer says it will continue to work with the best companies to make shopping even easier for its customers. Walmart’s expansion of voice-activated capabilities comes as its chief rival, Amazon, pushes further into both the grocery and voice technology spaces. How VSCO Girls Are Reshaping The Beauty IndustryYou’ve heard of them, seen them, and probably know one of them. The VSCO Girl, a term borrowed from California-based app Visual Supply Company, now represents a growing number of teens with disposable income. Their less is more aesthetic, love of Instagram-worthy packaging, and penchant for socially-conscious mid-market brands is reshaping the beauty industry. Investment bank and securities firm, Piper Jaffray, released a semiannual teen survey this fall detailing just how influential the VSCO trend is. Cosmetic spending among teens saw a 21 percent decrease year over year. Plus, the firm downgraded Estee Lauder stock last week from overweight to neutral. Ulta Beauty also saw its stock fall 29 percent at the end of August following disappointing second quarter earnings, indicating a softening of makeup sales. The VSCO girl is somewhat of a parallel to the Marie Kondo effect, as she’s traded in heavy makeup for Carmex lip balm, rosewater facial spray, and single-item, multi-use products from Glossier. A beauty consultant from Sephora said, “I think there is definitely more of a skincare trend going on...It's more of a focus on moisturizers and cleansers, and teens are moving more toward the cleaner ingredient brands.”The report indicates that big brand names could have to shift strategies to reach the VSCO demographic as teens are looking to connect with brands on a more diverse, nuanced level. *walking cautiously through scrubland* (Bird flusters)... Tony: What's that? Adrian: Birds! Gonna shit on our head! Tony: Even the birds are against us. Adrian: (farts) Uoh! Tony: That was not a manly fart! Adrian: A scared little one that was. Tony: A Scooby-Doo one. Adrian: Tell me more of that story Tony... Tony: So, right, it was hard to say at first what the locals were feeling haunted for. But then, strange occurrences! Flashlights were missing their batteries. New gas cylinders had been replaced by old ones. Then wood shavings near window locks; scratches on doorframes. They always felt like he was watching them. The legend of the hermit has endured for so long. They gave him a name. Do you know what that name was? Adrian: No. Tony: They named him… Hermit the Log. Adrian: Hahahargh. Hermit the Log? Tony: Hermit the Log. Bare: Okay, so we need somewhere to camp. You know, we’re not in a forest or anything so it is harder out here. So maybe use our imagination a little bit. Tony: Where you goin’ with that plastic bottle? Adrian: To piss it! Do you want to know everything do ya?! Tony: Why do you want to piss in it? WHY... DO... YOU... WANT... TO PISS IN IT? Adrian: Haa, that’s what I always do. I don’t like toilets. Tony: This is the countryside, it’s all toilet. Bare: There you go, one lone tree, that might be our best bet. Adrian: Unbelievable. Bare: At least it’s better than nothing. (Adrian urinates.) Adrian: Ahh! It's gone all over my fingers. Uhh, aaah, that's better... Don't drink this Tony, I'm just going to leave it down here. Tony: Are we not going back to the hotel room yet? We doin’ some night shots? Bare: What I’ve learned though is that the best thing for starting a fire if you haven’t got matches or a lighter is to get deep inside the vanity case. Adrian: Ah! Bare: Do you have anything with you? Adrian: I can help you there Bare. Tony: I need a shite. Bare: Ok, there, look- Adrian: Hang on for a sec Bare- Tony! Go at least ten metres down wind, dig a hole. Tony: Yeah, yeah, can I borrow your toilet seat? Adrian: Have you got, have you got any paper? Adrian: You know I don’t like doing that. Tony: Come on, this is an exceptional situation. Adrian: I've got some paper here if you want it. Up my sleeve. But wrap it in this plastic. Tony: Okay, thanks. Adrian: And bury the plastic afterwards, otherwise it’ll end up on Ebay, sorry Bare, where were we? Oh yeah, me vanity bag. I might have just what you need. So what do we have in here, we have; two tubes of Carmex lip balm, bottle of Neutrogena dandruff shampoo, Neutrogena face scrub and Nivea Intensive Moisturising Lotion. Bare: Yeah, okay, look, this is gonna be good. Adrian: Dunno if any of that stuff's any good. Bare: And even if we fluff up some of these. Adrian: That stuff’s great. Try it. Be my guest. Bare: All of this wax stuff burns well. Adrian: Yeah I meant on your face, but ok, no problem, just don’t waste it all. It’s, it's expensive. Tony: (distance) Nyyyaaah, uuuugh. Come out! Adrian: Fuck sake Tony. Tony: Won't come out! Bare: Okay. Try that, you’re trying to like shave bits off there, ‘kay into there. Adrian: Uh-huh, I see. Oh yeah. Hah! I've made fire! Hahaha, would ya look at that now. Tony: On ya Wildman! Adrian: I am a wildman. Tony: Well done! Well done. Adrian: That was quick, I hope you buried everything well, don’t want to step in it later. Tony: A’course. Bare: There’s only one thing that remains. Adrian: (Slaps hands together) Hotel! Bare: Cook the testicle sack. Adrian: Bollocks. A&T: (Laughter) Bare: Okay, we’re going to boil the water up. Tony: Chestnuts roasting on an open fire… Bare: Testicles on the fire… Adrian: Well, this is nice and freezing, isn’t it. Just like my one dumb camping trip. Bare: I’m excited about the testicle maggot concoction. That’s going to be good protein, good energy… Tony: No Thanks! You first Bare... It was your idea. Will square-jawed survivalist Bare Grills eat the testicles and maggots? Listen on! Grills takes DJ Adrian Byrne & producer Tony Wilson of The Friday Rock Show out of their onesies, slippers & comfort zones into the truly brutal majesty of the Irish west coast. To brace elements & try to get out alive and not kill each other for two days.. This ain't just jogging around and posing with the flat stomach, this is actual real work, with heart-in-the-mouth, balls-rammed-up-yer-pipe endurance where raw testicles are eaten and ropes are clung on tight to for dear life, in this most epic of outdoor podcasts ever attempted. I just loved the movie Mermaids with Cher and Wynona Ryder. There was a scene when Wynona's character was asking Cher how would she know if this boy was "the one" and Cher bursts into song singing "The Shoop, Shoop Song (it's in his kiss)". well, I often wonder if it's in his kiss or is it in yours? One of the things I feel is often neglected are our lips. We worry about wrinkles around our eyes, sagging skin, etc., but do we worry about taking care of our pucker? You're probably already saying to yourself "well, I put onl lipstick every day isn't that enough?" Well, the answer to that is a big fat N.O.!!! Our lips need special attention just like our eyes, neck or any other part of our face and body. If you find you have chapped, flaky lips, one of the quickest ways to heal them is to first take a dry toothbrush and rub it across your lips, this will help loosen the dry flaky skin and remove it. Just don't brush too hard. The second is to be sure to protect them especially in the harsh months during the winter and summer time. I love the Clinique Targeted Balm. I use this every time I go out in the sun or if in harsh winter I use it then as well. It keeps your lips from getting sunburned and moistens them at the same time. A couple of my favorite chapped lip remedies are Carmex and Blistex Lip Ointment . And please don't forget -- not only do we need to take good care of our lips, but, we also need to take great care of what's around and in-between them as well. One of the quickest ways to look years younger is to whiten your teeth. I'm a huge fan of the Crest White Strips. What I love most about them is that they work, they're affordable and you can travel with them. The second best way which is a bit more time consuming a little bit more messy is to use a whitening bleach with trays and an LED Light which work very well for darker stains. I love the feeling of mouthwash it always makes me feel like I have a clean mouth. I'm so digging this cool mouthwash decanter. Now don't forget after all your great efforts to make your pout beautiful and healthy, be sure to make it stand out and shine. Some of my favorite lipglosses are from MAC, Estee Lauder and Bobbi Brown. Well my friends, there you have it. Now go get smooching. MMMMWWAAH!! Big kisses to you. Love & Kisses, Dawn-Marie XO

You have 5 seconds to win the customer in a retail setting. How can you use neuroscience and smart package design to jumpstart the customer experience? The science of package design Marketing your brand in a retail setting today is more competitive than ever. The decision to buy is now based on much more than just quality and pricing. Brand packaging, as our guest Terri Goldstein explains, used to be an afterthought- often left in the hands of the ones printing the labels. Today, executives understand they have five seconds to win the customer over many other brand choices. Savvy marketers are using neuroscience to tap into customer emotions and influence choices. Smart package design is much more than just making the product stand out. Brands need to consider whom they are reaching out to. How do those customers want to feel? How will they use the product beyond its intended use, or as an expression of their own tastes and values? Package designers like Terri use a visual vocabulary based on neuroscience to create packages that call to us at the store. These designs connect with us on a subconscious level so we want to bring them home, live with them, and be seen with them. So how can you create packaging that speaks to your customers? Terri shares some standout examples of highly successful package designs, and how they create connections strong enough to negate pricing preferences and break old habits. About our guest Terri Goldstein is the CEO and founder of The Goldstein Group. At The Goldstein Group, Terri and her veteran team of writers, structural engineers, graphic designers, and production specialists generate iconic package designs that truly make a difference to trade, consumers and the clients that she serves. Under Terri’s direction, The Goldstein Group has created brand imagery systems for: Aqua Net, Bayer Aspirin, Cutex, Rolaids, Allegra, Nasacort, Phillips’ Colon Health, Carmex, Selsun Blue, Panasonic Women’s Shavers, Balmex, Gentle Naturals, Little Remedies, Cortizone •10, Heinz Brands, Gulden’s, PAM, Hills Bros., IcyHot, MoonPie, and One-A-Day to name a few.
