Artelia Green's magnetic pull begins with its frontrunner, Tiffani Marie. As a recovering academic, Tiffani heals through music yet remains driven by her in-depth research on the harmful effects of toxic stress on Black communities and the redemptive power of ancestral love. As Tiffani Marie and the crew craft each song, they draw upon the ethos of language revitalization, cultural memory, and root work to offer listeners more than just a melody—to provide an apothecary, a network of healing modalities that nourishes the soul and promotes healing. Birthed from a fusion of Frisco swagger, Arkansas's ancestral roots, and the enduring spirit of Yoruba culture, Artelia Green stands as a nexus toward critical thought and transformative action. The group stitches together the soulful strains of funk, soul, gospel and djembe, creating an immersive soundscape that transports listeners to another time and space. More than a musical experience, it's an invitation—a call to acknowledge the raw reality of Black suffering and, more importantly, its transcendence. With a repertoire that can light up a stage for anywhere from 30 minutes to an electrifying 2 hours, Artelia Green channels inspirations from legends like Parliament Funkadelic, Lauryn Hill, The Roots, and more. They narrate a timeless tale of love, healing, and transcendence. Artelia Green's latest album, "In No Particular Order," is a masterpiece that exemplifies their essence. The titular track "INPO" hails the legacy of hip-hop, while songs like "Harriet's Brim" explore the depths of oft overlooked history, and “Ghetto Children Funk" pays homage to the indomitable spirit of youth from the hood. With tracks like "Sugarman," they offer a discerning look at the music industry, and with songs like "Intuition" and "Yarrow Fades," they traverse the intricate landscapes of love, loss, and healing. A standout piece, "Cashmere," a tribute to Tiffani Marie's daughter, encapsulates the whirlwind of emotions surrounding the genesis of new life. She is a university professor, mother, and also filmmaker as she produced "The Children Could Fly": A documentary I produced featuring music from Artelia Green & the Bandanas. It offers an in-depth look into my research and its impact on youth and communities.

A bandana is a useful item. It can serve as a napkin, rag, bandage, drain plug, motorcycle repair tool, headwear, blindfold, flag, mask, pouch, or a stylish scarf. But not all bandanas are created equal. Many to most are stiff, paisley-printed and inked with plastisol to create a cheap and ultimately unsatisfying object. Today On the Dogwatch we hear about the other end of the bandana spectrum in a conversation with Thomas Petillo at One Feather Press in Nashville. In our conversation, Thomas describes how One Feather came to be, how he goes about sourcing selvedge fabric, and then discharge printing the bandanas. There is a shed behind his house where the process happens, a kind of Willy Wonka-like magic. There is squirting ink, a giant sandwich press, a long conveyor belt, and a precipitous drop for the bandanas into a cardboard box, all elements that stir the creative imagination. In the end, Thomas helps us learn how he creates high-quality, 100% cotton, selvedge bandanas and what can be learned from the process. As a bonus, we also discuss his work on the new and forthcoming Dogwatch Company bandanas. Stay tuned for those coming soon on a remodeled website.

Once Tara and Pam have described the fashions they were sporting or coveting in March of 1988, we critique the cover, and then get into the fashion stories of Sassy's premiere issue, set on a boardwalk, at an old railyard, and in a palette of creams and beiges. What Next also forecasts coming fashion trends with pinpoint accuracy -- thanks, Michael Kors and Betsey Johnson! The beauty features teach you how to use bandanas and makeup; then About Face tells you about bang trims and hot oil treatments, and Body Talk warns you about gonorrhea, weed, and NutraSweet. After Elise gets a makeover (and WILDLY negged in the process), we take a quick trip through some of the issue's most memorable ads, including Benetton, Levi's, Cherry Lane trying to make bloomers happen, and which Sassy Club products we'd be bugging our mom to buy us. Then: the Magazineyness! Jane's first Diary (her editor's letter) has a culturally insensitive lede but otherwise makes us want to keep reading. The letters to the editor in Say What are probably just as real as the ones in Help! And should Sara Walker, the subject of Inside Out (the magazine's inside back cover column for magazine production ephemera) who actually named the magazine itself, maybe have been its first cover model? Start thinking about how you can source these outfits on the cheap as you listen along!QUICK LINKS
