During this episode I talk to Helen Cammack about how the act of purposefully planning her experience of parenthood ahead of time has had a profound impact on how she does her thing in her life in life and Motherhoodd. After a successful corporate career and several start-up businesses, becoming a parent nearly didn't happen for Helen because she just couldn't see past the challenges of parenthood, and couldn't figure out how it would work for her. Helen was anxious about becoming a parent for many years, until she finally overcame that anxiety with the planning and preparation required as part of the adoption process. And when she finally adopted her two children when she was nearly 43 she felt ready to embrace parenthood, her way, and her anxiety dissipated. 7 years later, Helen is now the founder of Preparental.com, a business to help all future parents (not just adopters) with their practical planning and preparation for being parents Whether you're a natural planner or not, this episode offers so much food for thought around the power of approaching life as a parent with our eyes and minds wide open. Because, as Helen so beautifully shares in this episode, she believes that planning and preparing your life - not just your body - for parenthood, enables parents to be more confident, purposeful, aligned and intentional, and much more likely to enjoy the parenthood ride in our own unique and ownable ways. Rep. Cammack Proposes Banning Foreign Flags On House Floor

Real News Now Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2024 3:16

A movement led by Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) among GOP representatives is gaining traction aimed at preventing the exhibition or carrying of foreign flags within the House floor. The push for this ban arose in response to an incident where members of the Democratic party displayed miniature Ukrainian flags to endorse the passing of a significant foreign aid package. The package, valued at $95 billion, intended to provide a substantial $61 billion to assist Ukraine in its conflict against Russia while also supporting other regional partners. Cammack expressed her position firmly: 'In the assembly hall designated for the representatives of the United States of America, the single flag that should be flying is our own. It is in that space that we deliberate and take decisive stands in favor of our citizens and the fruitful utilization of taxes collected from them.' She continued expressing her conviction, stating, 'Every resolution we make should take place beneath the unique symbol of our nation – our Star-Spangled Banner – a reminder of those we serve and the reason we consider our nation superior to all others in the world's history. I'm immensely grateful for and proud of the colleagues who've voiced their agreement and joined me in raising our voices for the American people, pledging ourselves to our nation's cause above all else.' If this resolution is ratified, no member would retain the right to bring or exhibit any foreign nation's flag on the floor during the House's sessions. The mandate of enforcing this ban would fall on the House sergeant-at-arms. However, this resolution allows a pair of exemptions: members permitted to adorn their lapels with pins exemplifying foreign flags, and foreign flags portrayed as part of exhibits or speeches by members, as consistent with House rules. Whether this resolution will be put to a vote remains undetermined. However, Cammack's office has revealed that the resolution has already attracted numerous co-sponsors during its inception. Among those voicing their solid support are representatives Stephanie Bice (R-OK) and Byron Donalds (R-FL). Bice expressed her firm stance on the matter through a statement. 'The assembly hall of the United States representatives serves a single entity and a common cause – the United States of America. It is fundamentally unfitting for a Member to exhibit any other flag within this space, barring our own. The initiative taken by Rep. Cammack on this issue deserves appreciation.' Donalds admonished those politicians detached from reality who recklessly approved a colossal sum of taxpayers' money going out to Ukraine. The Congressman also took a strong stance in solidarity with Rep. Cammack's endeavor to ensure that such uncalled-for actions never repeat, reinforcing his commitment to prioritizing American citizens. Its one of those things that, when you hear about it you can't believe it doesn't already exist.   https://www.preparental.com/   Takeaways Having open and honest conversations with your partner about your desires and concerns regarding parenthood is crucial in making a decision. Planning and preparation can help alleviate anxieties and fears about becoming a parent. There is a lack of resources and support for individuals and couples who are considering parenthood, particularly in terms of career planning, financial planning, and childcare options. Reducing barriers for women in the workplace, such as implementing flexible working arrangements, can support their decision to become parents and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said that the chamber was ready on time, but that the legal teams had an issue to work out before the proceedings began. Brandon Cammack, who got married a week ago and has yet to honeymoon due to the trial, testified that he was hired by Paxton himself to serve as outside counsel for the OAG. He said the attorney general said he wanted to hire a “special prosecutor” to investigate “potential violations of the Texas Penal Code.”Cammack was recommended to Paxton by Michael Wynne, Nate Paul's lawyer. He said he was “excited” and “flattered” to be working with the OAG.“The only person I reported to was Mr. Paxton,” said Cammack when asked about the allegations that he was working for the Travis County District Attorney's Office. He said he primarily communicated with Paxton via an encrypted messaging app and Proton email addresses.Cammack, who issued over 30 grand jury subpoenas in his investigation to evaluate Paul's allegations against federal authorities, said he got the list of names to be subpoenaed from Wynne and Paul. He said he had never issued a grand jury subpoena at the time.Per Cammack, U.S. Marshals showed up at his law office in Houston after he questioned a judge about his deceased wife in his investigation. Cammack voiced his concerns to Paxton and Brent Webster, the first assistant attorney general who replaced Jeff Mateer, at a meeting at a Starbucks in Austin. He testified that Webster informed him there that his contract with the agency was null and void and that he would not be paid for his work. Paxton's defense pushed back against the line of questioning that asserted Cammack was naive and inexperienced in his role with the OAG.Cammack insisted that he never thought he was investigating a “baseless” allegation and said that Paxton did not “pressure” him to reach a particular conclusion. He testified that he was not trying to help or hurt Paul, allegations outlined in one of the articles of impeachment. The Houston-based lawyer testified that, “I never got any pushback from anyone at the attorney general's office or the Travis County District Attorney's Office” until he received a cease and desist letter from Mateer, the OAG's first assistant attorney general at the time. Brown, a former assistant U.S. attorney, briefly testified about applying for the special counsel role that Cammack filled.Garrison was questioned about the “midnight opinion” allegedly written to help Paul and his business, and testified about Paul defaulting on loans he owed to the credit union.McCarty, who was the deputy attorney general for civil litigation at the OAG, resigned from the office but did not join the whistleblower lawsuit. US lawmakers have grilled the CEO of TikTok over data security and harmful content, responding sceptically during a tense committee hearing to his assurances that the hugely popular video-sharing app prioritises user safety and should not be banned. Shou Zi Chew's rare public appearance came at a crucial time for the company, which has 150 million American users but is under increasing pressure from US officials. TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, have been swept up in a wider geopolitical battle between Beijing and Washington over trade and technology. In a bipartisan effort to reign in the power of a major social media platform, Republican and Democratic lawmakers pressed Chew on a host of topics, ranging from TikTok's content moderation practices, how the company plans to secure American data from Beijing, and its spying on journalists.  “Chew, you are here because the American people need the truth about the threat TikTok poses to our national and personal security,” Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a Republican, said in her opening statement. Chew, a 40-year-old Singapore native, told the House Committee on Energy and Commerce that TikTok prioritises the safety of its young users and denied it's a national security risk. He reiterated the company's plan to protect US user data by storing it on servers maintained and owned by the software giant Oracle. “Let me state this unequivocally: ByteDance is not an agent of China or any other country,” Chew said. TikTok has been dogged by claims that its Chinese ownership means user data could end up in the hands of the Chinese government or that it could be used to promote narratives favourable to the country's Communist leaders. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testifies during a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Photo / AP In 2019, the Guardian reported that TikTok was instructing its moderators to censor videos that mention Tiananmen Square and images unfavourable to the Chinese government. The platform says it has since changed its moderation practices. ByteDance admitted in December that it fired four employees last summer who accessed data on two journalists and people connected to them while attempting to uncover the source of a leaked report about the company. For its part, TikTok has been trying to distance itself from its Chinese origins, saying 60 per cent of ByteDance is owned by global institutional investors such as Carlyle Group. “Ownership is not at the core of addressing these concerns,” Chew said. China has also said it would oppose any US attempts to force ByteDance to sell the app. In one of the most dramatic moments, Republican Representative Kat Cammack played a TikTok video that showed a shooting gun with a caption that included the House committee holding the hearing, with the exact date before it was formally announced. “You expect us to believe that you are capable of maintaining the data security, privacy and security of 150 million Americans where you can't even protect the people in this room,” Cammack said. TikTok spokesperson Ben Rathe said the company removed the violent video aimed at the committee and banned the account that posted it. Chew also noted the failure of US social media companies to address the very concerns for which TikTok was being criticised. “American social companies don't have a good track record with data privacy and user security,” he said. “Look at Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, just one example.” As the Energy and Commerce committee questioned Chew, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was questioned about the threat TikTok poses at a separate committee hearing. Asked by Representative Ken Buck, a Republican of Colorado, if the platform is a security threat to the United States, Blinken said: “I believe it is.” “Shouldn't a threat to United States security be banned?” Buck responded. “It should be ended one way or another. But there are different ways of doing that,” Blinken responded. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testifies during a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Photo / AP Committee members also showed a host of TikTok videos that encouraged users to harm themselves and commit suicide. Many questioned why the platform's Chinese counterpart, Douyin, does not carry the same controversial and potentially dangerous content as the American product. Chew responded that it depends on the laws of the country where the app is operating. He said the company has about 40,000 moderators that track harmful content and an algorithm that flags material. Wealth management firm Wedbush described the hearing as a “disaster” for TikTok that made a ban more likely if the social media platform doesn't separate from its Chinese parent. Emile El Nems, an analyst at Moody's Investors Service, said a ban would benefit TikTok rivals YouTube, Instagram and Snap, “likely resulting in higher revenue share of the total advertising wallet”. To avoid a ban, TikTok has been trying to sell officials on a US$1.5 billion plan (NZ$2.3b), Project Texas, which routes all US user data to Oracle. Under the project, access to US data is managed by US employees through a separate entity called TikTok US Data Security, which is run independently of ByteDance and monitored by outside observers. As of October, all new US user data was being stored inside the country. The company started deleting all historic US user data from non-Oracle servers this month, in a process expected to be completed this year, Chew said. Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw noted that regardless of what the company does to assure lawmakers it will protect US user data, the Chinese government can still have significant influence over its parent company and ask it to turn over data through its national security laws. Congress, the White House, US armed forces and more than half of US states have already banned the use of the app from official devices. But wiping away all the data tracking associated with the platform might prove difficult. In a report released this month, the Cybersecurity company Feroot said so-called tracking pixels from ByteDance, which collect user information, were found on 30 US state websites, including some where the app has been banned. Other countries including Denmark, Canada, Great Britain and New Zealand, along with the European Union, have already banned TikTok from government-issued devices. A complete TikTok ban in the US would risk political and popular backlash. The company sent dozens of popular TikTokers to Capitol Hill to lobby lawmakers to preserve the platform. And a dozen civil rights and free speech organisations, including the American Civil Liberties Union and PEN America, have signed a letter opposing a wholesale TikTok ban, arguing it would set a “dangerous precedent for the restriction of speech”. David Kennedy, a former government intelligence officer who runs the cybersecurity company TrustedSec, said he agrees with restricting TikTok access on government-issued phones but that a nationwide ban might be too extreme. “We have Tesla in China, we have Microsoft in China, we have Apple in China. Are they going to start banning us now?” Kennedy said. “It could escalate very quickly.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rep. The Florida Congresswoman says that, the vote by the House and the Senate last week to declassify the COVID origins documents, “was an incredible display of bipartisanship, in which [all Congress] recognized that the general public, the American people deserve to know exactly what [Congress] has known for so long, that this was actually from a lab and not some bat kissing a pangolin.” She says, that after all the horrific consequences that resulted from COVID-19, “the very least that this administration could do is share the foundation of this virus with the United States and quite frankly, the world. But yet we see that [Biden's dragging his feet on this.” Cammack comments, that the only reason that she and other members of Congress can think of, “is that if [Biden] is forced to show people what we all know, then he is going to be forced to act, because people will be so outraged to know truly the origins of COVID and then it will be upon him to take action against China. Which for someone in his position who is bought and paid for, his family is bought and paid for by the Chinese, that is a problem for him personally. So this is Joe Biden putting his personal interest above the country.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The NIH Director saying in the emails, that these doctors were “getting out of control, and getting too much traction.” The Declaration was signed onto by “a Nobel Prize winner.” As well, as “thousands and thousands of epidemiologists, doctors, and scientists… and the fact that you have not only proof of this communication, where [Fauci and Collins] say there needs to be a quick and devastating takedown of this group, but then that same language pops up months later on March 8, 2021 in communications between the Biden administration and Twitter executives. That right there is the connection of why it is so dangerous, this collusion between big government and big tech, and how then this became the premises, the pretext for the takedown and suppression of dissenting opinions on social media platforms.” The Congresswoman explaining that she “guarantees there are people out there who would have thought twice about succumbing to pressure when it came to vaccines, or would have been better prepared and a little bit more knowledgeable had they had access to this. She says combining this with Biden throwing “more red tape on them, the threat of new tax taxes, regulations on producers and then basically put a bow on it with a pretty scarce labor market, it's looking pretty grim.” Cammack also comments with Ukraine, a major food producer for the world, being under attack ‘not planting' will only further compound the problem next year, where there will be massive “food shortages and supply” issues throughout the world.
