Activist, manager, producer, and curator Andrew Coles sits down with Denise to talk about the slowly changing landscape of Hollywood and the importance of creating opportunities for people who have historically been left out of the industry. Andrew dives into his unintentional career in entertainment, the cycle of IP mining, and legacy institutions. -- About Andrew Coles: Andrew C. Coles is an activist, manager, producer, curator + DJ - he currently serves as the Founder & CEO of The Mission Entertainment. Upon graduating from Harvard with a degree in African-American studies, he moved to LA and began working at CAA before going to Overbrook Entertainment where he worked under Franklin Leonard (founder of The Black List), first as his assistant then junior executive. From Overbrook he relocated to New York to run development for Scott Rudin Productions, working across film, TV and theatre. In 2013, Andrew created The Mission Entertainment – a management + production company whose purpose and philosophical foundation lies in serving as advocates for storytellers that have been traditionally overlooked, undervalued and underrepresented. With a childhood dream of becoming a civil rights criminal defense attorney, Andrew has married his passions for storytelling + social justice advocacy through working in the entertainment industry – helping to create images that are truly representative of the world we live in. On the production side, Andrew has recently served as Producer of Queen & Slim, Melina Matsoukas's debut feature, starring Daniel Kaluuya + Jodie Turner Smith. Andrew also serves as Executive Producer of the BET series Twenties, which is wrapping production on its second season. He is currently incubating the mission radio, a non-profit art collective committed to personal transformation + world change through spirituality + creativity. In October of 2020, he opened The Mission on Kaua'i, a spiritual retreat and creative campus that serves as headquarters for the mission radio.

Daddy Daniel Kaluuya is having a moment in Hollywood right now and has already established his star power at a mere 32 years of age. He stunned audiences with his debut performance in Get Out, provided a moving yet haunting performance in Queen & Slim, and transformed into Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. EPISODE #80 - This Marvelous Motivating Monday - Continuing celebrating Black History Month, we celebrate Daniel Kaluuya on his amazing acting roles; from GET OUT, BLACK PANTHER, QUEEN SLIM amongst many films, and now JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH, playing the role of Fred Hampton, Sr. A New York Times article said The Ku Klux Klan arose after the Civil War and orchestrated a campaign to effectively revoke Black citizenship; the Panthers were born a century later, as a REACTION to the ways in which that campaign had been successful. The Klan used terrorism to achieve its ends. The Panthers were guilty of sporadic acts of violence, but they had no ethos of terrorizing swaths of the public. Daniel talks about wrong preconception and misconceptions of the Black Panther Party. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY? This episode was recorded on October 25th, 2020. We are joined by Drea and Tamara. We all discuss our initial thoughts; the slave as an executioner; the lack of choice in a flawed system; the political as personal; would a black person stay in the car?; Slim’s naïveté; Shakespeare; forgiveness; the inspiration of their journey; and black betrayal. We embark on a HUGE tangent discussing OJ Simpson; Michael Jackson; Corey Feldman; R Kelly; Bill Cosby; protest as an act of self-defense; a surplus of tragedy not processed; Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me: Notes on the First 150 Years in America; agency and determinism; Trump loyalists; empathy and distance; voter intent; televised news; and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. And we eventually get back to discussing the movie. On today's episode we explore the question, "Are people outside of black culture able to relate to it?" We invite a young married couple who grew up outside of black culture on to the podcast and get their perspective of the film Queen & Slim. A film that as the director Melina Matsoukas says "Gives an authentic view of what it means to be black." Queen & Slim is an amazing story thats dipped in black culture and confronts issues about relationships, black love and social justice. The storyline highlights a number of difficult topics that effect the black community. Sean and Emily Edgerton give their candid thoughts about the film and its implications for our society as a whole. Mark needs to talk to Elaine about something that is taking over his life, and in true Jeremy Kyle style, he's doing it in front of an audience. In TV we look at the first three episodes of season 2 of The Mandalorian (7:55). Then Elaine gives us her quick thoughts on Season 4 of The Crown (16:40) and Nordic Noir drama DNA (34:51). Check the time stamps to see if Elaine's definition of ‘quick' matches yours. Finally Mark has mostly been watching films this week, so gives his thoughts on Universal's non Dark Universe version of The Invisible Man (41:20), Queen & Slim (44:25), and has his heart warmed by Irish drama Ordinary Love (49:10). No... Romansowo, choć w zupełnie innym stylu, wybrzmiewa także znakomita propozycja indie z USA - "Queen and Slim" ze znanym z "Get out" Danielem Kaluuyą. Będzie jeszcze Borat czyli Sacha Baron Cohen próbuje ośmieszyć USA ze znakiem jakości Trumpa i...wychodzi mu to zupełnie sprawnie. Nazwijmy to romansem z rednecką Ameryką.

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! So Boom.. I go to the movies with my lady right? We go to see Queen & Slim, mostly for me, because they finally let black people kill a cop without a white savior! Well let me tell you, I left the theatre indifferent.. Don't get me wrong the movie is incredible cinematically, it just seemed like a lot of unrealistic things going on in this scenario. In their defense, It's a movie, and a love story, but GAH DAMN! Let's talk about the Good, the Bad & the underwhelming parts. Tune In! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/colelogicpod/support

Queen & Slim is an instant cult classic. Yeah, we said it. Natasha and her good friend Amin give the breakdown of breakdowns about the most talked about film of the year. Scene by scene. Symbol by symbol. Theme by theme. There is MUCH to discuss. Some folks are mad at screenwriter and director Lena Waithe & Melina Matsoukas for not giving a "fairytale ending" of black love. The rest of us are happy somebody finally portrayed what black love (of self and others) in America feels like to us - hopeless. Like most of y'all, we felt some kind of way after watching an advanced screening of Queen & Slim, and now that it's out for everyone, we can finally explore why. Spoilers and all. We get all semi-academic about induced transformation through trauma, fragility of black love and black bodies, freedom and toxic love. And also keep it all the way real asking "Why can't black folks f'in LIVE IN LOVE and not just find it?! Why is it always a damn struggle?!" We also explore whether all killers are “bad people”, yearning to just feel something in this traumatic society, the traumatic effect of the justice system on black minds even those who are a part of the justice system as lawyers, running from feelings vs. chasing feelings, the dynamics of black heterosexual relationships when a woman is in a more educated position, women empowerment leading people to believe women no longer need any help as human beings, why all skinfolks aint kinfolks, black boys craving legacy and fighting against the belief that their bodies aren't valued, naiveté and vulnerability of black men, still having trust in a society that conditions you not to, why it deserves ALL the cinematography awards, and plenty more. But it all boils down to those poetic a** words of Jay-Z, "Can I live?" SUBSCRIBE: Apple, Spotify, Google and anywhere you get your podcasts! One of the few times when you can actually declare a film as one of the biggest events of the year is here! Martin Scorsese's long-awaited THE IRISHMAN has been thrust onto the universe, and we dive head first. Riding that steam, we go right into a discussion on the directorial debut of Melina Matsoukas, QUEEN & SLIM. This artist certainly has a distinct visual eye. If I've planned my shoot well and communicated with the team properly, I only need my storyboards on set. They're covered with scribbled jokes, notes and alternate lines I want to try. On set, I'll magically think of the ad-libs I've written. By planning, it allows for the on-set magic to flourish. So, yes I go to work with a simple piece of paper in my pocket. Printed, not on the phone. Go see "Queen & Slim" and "Ford vs. Ferrari"... listen why. Happy Thanksgiving, Jordan Commercial Directing Bootcamp is filling up fast.
