Many of the world's poorest communities are among tribal and indigenous populations. Trapped in a relentless cycle of extreme poverty, vulnerability, and deprivation, they face a complex web of challenges that are deeply interconnected. These communities are the most vulnerable to the onset of climate change and environmental degradation. Increased water scarcity, soil instability and deforestation threaten the livelihoods of the 300 million people who are reliant on India's forest ecosystems. In Episode 13, I am joined by Dr. Sarika Kulkarni, the founder of the RAAH Foundation, an organization with the vision to make a better life for the tribal communities of Maharashtra. Operating in the northern Western Ghats, RAAH Foundation takes an integrated landscape management approach. This includes activities like creating water-positive villages, soil and moisture conservation, contour lining of farms, protecting grasses, designating fragile and critical areas, diverting grazing, converting barren land into biodiverse enriched carbon sinks through the plantation of native trees. To support biodiversity, RAAH is involved in the removal of invasive species, regenerative farming and agroforestry. Other than supporting tribal communities establish climate smart farming, RAAH Foundation aims to revive tribal art and establish micro businesses. The Think Wildlife Podcast is also available on iTunes, Spotify and YouTube. British journalist and environmental campaigner Charles Clover has recently published a book called Rewilding the Sea. Here he argues that left to its own devices, the sea's biodiversity can recover from, and counter the devastating effects of climate change. Charles gives the example of whales. If they were allowed to rebuild to pre-whaling numbers they would remove the same amount of carbon from the atmosphere as we pump into it, just with their poo. Also the humble oyster, which can filter well over a hundred litres of water a day, and Charles argues is worth its weight in ecological gold, far exceeding their economics as fancy food.

Andrea Macdonald, founder ideaXme interviews George Duffield, co-founder Blue Marine Foundation (Blue). Blue is a marine conservation charity. Its objectives are to ensure the protection of at least 30% of the ocean by 2030. They develop models of sustainable fishing proving that low-impact fishing benefits marine life, local fishers and communities. They restore marine habitats to revive and protect vulnerable and threatened species and to sequester carbon. Moreover, they tackle unsustainable fishing by highlighting poor practice and develop solutions that benefit the oceans and the local people whose livelihood's depend on it. Mobilising both the public, government and the commercial sector to both understand the sea and change human behaviour are central to all of the above. In this interview George Duffield talks to ideaXme about: -The importance of the world's oceans to maintain the health of the planet and all living things on it. -The threats and obstacles to protecting the world's oceans. -The challenges of protecting the High Seas, making up the largest portion of the oceans and outside national legal jurisdictions. The UN's objective to create legislation to protect the High Seas by creating a Law of the Oceans in 2021. -The End of the Line book and documentary that inspired him to co-found Blue Marine Foundation with Chris Gorrel Barnes and Charles Clover who wrote the book and narrated the documentary with Ted Danson. -How Blue Marine Foundation has secured protection for 4 million square kilometres of ocean. -He explains, that there's a place for science but we need action now! -Blue Marine Foundation's activities - from campaigning, lobbying and fundraising to creating sustainability models to support local communities whilst protecting the oceans. -Specific examples where Blue Marine Foundation has directly helped to change policy and subsequent policing of new legislation created by that policy. - Ascension Island, Chagos and Lyme Bay. -The recent partnerships created with Barclays Bank and Shackleton clothing to support Blue Marine Foundation's ongoing initiatives to protect the world's ocean. -Incentivising business, via an oceans fund, to get involved in protecting the world's oceans. Blue comments: "BLUE is filling a niche in the NGO world, enabling marine conservation to happen fast and effectively. What differentiates BLUE is that we are well connected and determined; we seize opportunities as they arise and get things done. We forge new partnerships and challenge the status quo. BLUE works using a combination of top-down intervention to improve governance of our seas and bottom-up project delivery to help local communities who are at the front line of ocean conservation". Rusko a Čína si k sobě hledají cestu. Ruský prezident Vladimir Putin v pátek oznámil, že Moskva pomáhá Pekingu vybudovat systém protiraketové obrany, jaký dosud mělo jen Rusko a Spojené státy. Východní mocnosti spolupracují stále častěji i mimo vojenskou oblast třeba v tom, jak získávají vliv v zahraničí, včetně střední Evropy. Má nás to zneklidňovat? Odpovídá Charles Clover, který o tom právě píše knihu.
Is nationalism really rising in China? How does it differ from patriotism? What is “Eurasianism” and how does Russia use that concept? How much of China’s nationalism is rooted in the “century of humiliation” that the country suffered at the hands of Western countries and Japan between 1839 and 1949? Jeremy and Kaiser spoke with two eminent scholars of nationalism in Russia and China to find out. Charles Clover is a correspondent with the Financial Times based in Beijing, and author of Black Wind, White Snow: The Rise of Russia's New Nationalism. Jude Blanchette is a scholar currently writing a book on neo-Maoists in China, who, he explains, have their own interpretation of Chinese nationalism. Jude was a guest on a previous episode of the Sinica Podcast dedicated to the subject of neo-Maoists. Recommendations: Jeremy: “The Age of Total Lies,” a translation of an essay written by Vesna Pešić, a Serbian opposition politician and human rights activist. Jude: The Political Logic of Economic Reform in China, published in 1993 by Susan Shirk. Charles: Easternization: Asia's Rise and America's Decline From Obama to Trump and Beyond, by Gideon Rachman. Kaiser: Age of Anger: A History of the Present, by Pankaj Mishra, and the 1987 film Repentance, a view into life under Stalinism by Georgian filmmaker Tengiz Abuladze.
16+1, a new Chinese initiative, takes its name from 16 countries of Central and Eastern Europe plus China. It held a summit in November 2016 attended by Premier Li Keqiang and prime ministers or deputy prime ministers from the other member states. Earlier, President Xi Jinping had visited three countries in the region — Serbia, Poland, and the Czech Republic. What’s it all for? How have China’s overtures been received by the governments of Central and Eastern Europe? Many of them — like those of Poland and the Czech Republic — had, until recently, real difficulties in their relations with China. And how have the two powers flanking Central and Eastern Europe — Russia to the east and the EU to the west — reacted to China’s creation of 16+1? For answers to these questions and many more, Kaiser and Jeremy talked to Martin Hála, a China scholar who heads a project called AcaMedia, which is based in his native Prague. Recommendations: Jeremy: The Unbearable Lightness of Being, by Milan Kundera. Martin: Black Wind, White Snow, by Charles Clover, Eurasian integration: Caught between Russia and China, by the European Council on Foreign Relations. Kaiser: The “relative calculator” app on WeChat, which calculates the correct Chinese term for family relations. Search for 亲戚计算器 (qīnqi jìsuànqì) on WeChat.

It is more than a game to the Chinese. Anne McElvoy investigates the role of culture within historic Soviet expansionism and current Russian geopolitics. She talks to Charles Clover, author of Black Wind, White Snow: The Rise of Russia's New Nationalism about Eurasianism, an old idea with considerable traction in Putin's Russia and why bad ideas tend to win out over good ones . Historian Polly Jones, author of Myth Memory Trauma: Rethinking the Soviet past, 1953-70 and Clem Cecil, in-coming Director of Pushkin House, are in the studio to discuss the extent of Soviet interest in soft power alongside Mark Nash, curator of Red Africa and Ian Christie, co-curator of Unexpected Eisenstein, two new exhibitions in London. The continuing cultural legacy of Cold War relations between the Soviet Union and Africa is the subject of Red Africa, a season of film, art exhibition, talks and events, runs at Calvert 22 in London while at the same time Unexpected Eisenstein, a new exhibition at GRAD gallery in London, tells the story of the anglophile tendencies of a the great Soviet film-maker, Sergei Eisenstein. Eisenstein, whose epic and patriotic films Battleship Potemkin, Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible, together constitute a visual retrospective of Russian power, was himself hugely influenced by British writers from Shakespeare to Dickins. But as Anne McElvoy hears, the director went on to influence generations of British artists and film-makers, one legacy of his six-week sojourn in London in 1929. It was, as Christie explains, a trip ordered but not precisely sponsored, by Stalin. Producer: Jacqueline Smith
