After years of closed borders, North Korea reopened to a small number of foreign visitors.Johan Nylander entered as one of the first in years — to run the Pyongyang Marathon.Johan is an award-winning Asia correspondent and author whose work has appeared in CNN, National Geographic, Forbes, Nikkei Asia, and Sweden's leading business daily Dagens Industri. He has reported from the frontlines of the US–China trade war and written bestselling books including Shenzhen Superstars, The Epic Split, and The Wolf Economy Awakens. Colleagues have described him as “a guardian of free speech” and one of the most compelling storytellers covering Asia today. At 52, he chose one of the most restricted starting lines on Earth. The deeper story begins earlier. After years of high-stress reporting across Asia, Johan found himself physically depleted and mentally stretched thin. Watching the Hong Kong Marathon from the sidelines — barely able to run a kilometer — he made a decision. The following year, he ran his first marathon.Training became structure. Structure became momentum.Living between the mountains of Hong Kong's outer islands and one of the world's densest cities, he rebuilt himself mile by mile. Then came North Korea.Running through Pyongyang placed him inside a rare historical moment — moving through a country defined by control, discipline, and spectacle. The experience sharpened his understanding of movement, agency, and freedom. In this episode, we explore:Running the Pyongyang Marathon inside North KoreaBecoming one of the first foreign visitors back in the countryStarting endurance sport in his fiftiesRebuilding resilience after burnoutCovering geopolitics while cultivating personal freedomJohan has spent his career documenting global power. In North Korea, he stepped onto a different kind of frontline — one measured in miles.---

I just flew back to the States, after just a week of re-adjusting to the time here in Malaysia. When this podcast dropped on the 24th, I'll was somewhere between Macau, HKG and LAX. This week we discuss China’s current tourist climate, as well as the transit-without-visa (TWOV) scheme, followed by a short look at whether China’s role is as a David (Underdog) or Goliath. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced on Sunday that he will step down as the head of the Liberal Democratic Party, amid growing calls for him to take responsibility for the party-led ruling coalition's election setback in both houses of parliament. Addressing a news conference at the prime minister's office in Tokyo, Ishiba said he has "made the painful decision to resign despite still having unfinished tasks", emphasizing that the LDP must undergo genuine renewal and remain a tolerant and inclusive force. He added that he would not stand as a candidate in the expected LDP leadership election triggered by his resignation. Ishiba's announcement came a day before the LDP was scheduled to decide whether to hold an early party leadership election, which would essentially be demanding his resignation, according to Japanese media platform Nikkei Asia. It also followed a formal agreement reached on Thursday with the administration of United States President Donald Trump on 15 percent reciprocal tariffs on Japanese exports to the US. At Sunday's news conference, Ishiba said he had long considered tariff negotiations with the US a responsibility of his administration. With the signing of a memorandum of understanding last week, Ishiba said the negotiations reached a milestone, which made him decide to make way for his successor. In September 2024, Ishiba was elected president of the LDP for a term of three years. In October last year, the LDP and its junior coalition partner, the Komeito, lost their majority in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the National Diet of Japan. In July this year, the ruling coalition also lost its majority in the House of Councillors, or the upper house.2024年9月,石破茂当选自民党总裁,任期为三年。 In postwar Japan, the head of the LDP — the country's dominant political force since the party's founding in 1955 — has almost always become the prime minister, because the party commands the largest share of seats in the Diet. When an LDP president resigns or is replaced, the post of prime minister typically changes hands as well. According to the LDP's rules, a new leadership election can be held before the incumbent president's term expires. A majority of LDP members in the Diet and a majority of representatives in the LDP's prefectural branches can jointly request an election for a new president. Following Ishiba's formal resignation announcement, the LDP is expected to hold an extraordinary executive meeting on Monday morning, at which it will likely decide to cancel the submission of documents for an early party leadership election, according to TBS News, a commercial broadcasting company based in Tokyo. The Associated Press reported that the LDP is expected to set a date for a party leadership election, likely to be held in early October.

This is such a special episode because, for the first time ever, I'm interviewing an author about their book, because it's one of my favorite books! Gingko Season by Naomi Xu Elegant is a story about a young woman, Penelope Lin, who is moving through the world after her first big heartbreak and discovering herself while on the cusp between young adulthood and adulthood. The depiction of this time of life is just one of the things I loved about this book, and I was thrilled to be able to discuss it with Naomi!Naomi Xu Elegant is a freelance journalist and the author of the novel Gingko Season. She lives in New York. Naomi's writing has appeared in Monocle, Fortune, Atlas Obscura, Nikkei Asia, The Drift, and elsewhere. She is co-editor of Gully, an independent literary magazine, and she writes a monthly Substack called Luanqibazao.I would love for you to read Gingko Season, check out this review from the New York Times! Our drink this week is a Lychee Martini, which is featured in the book. As I found out during our discussion, including these martinis was an Easter egg for Naomi's mom, because they're her favorite cocktail. I asked if she'd be willing to share the recipe with us as a special addition to the episode, and she did! She said the secret is to blend whole lychees and lychee juice together, then strain the mixture through a sieve to get that lovely, milky color.Lychee Martini Recipe2 oz. vodka2 oz. lychee juiceShake in a cocktail shaker over ice.Serve neat in a cocktail glass.Garnish with a whole lychee (optional)Naomi's mom's tip: Blend whole lychees with lychee juice (both canned), then strain through a sieve to get your juice. The blended fruit gives it that lovely, clouded look. You can also add a bit of citrus or a dash of dry vermouth—lychee martinis are meant for everyone! In This EpisodeGarden State FilmFriday I'm In Love - Phoebe Bridgers CoverNapoleon FilmFoot Binding HistoryMiddlemarch by George EliotIn Search of Lost Time by Marcel ProustKazou IshiguroSally RooneyElena FerranteA Feather on the Breath of God by Sigrid NunezThe Sympathizer by Viet Thanh NguyenThe Candy House by Jennifer EganNaomi's Substack

Sources familiar with Apple's supply chains told Nikkei Asia that top suppliers in India were instructed to ramp up iPhone production. Yet the people noted that factory utilization rates were already at maximum levels, making it challenging to bring on significant amounts of new production. Here's more from the report: Source: zerohedge.com Sunday Talks: Secretary of Commerce Outlines Purpose of Tariff “Exemptions” – Sector Specific Tariffs Coming Soon there are two “sector specific” tariffs in Semiconductors and Pharmaceuticals that will be announced in the next few months. The recently announced “exemptions” are products that will be included in the sector specific tariffs that are also identified as “non-negotiable” tariffs. Semiconductor items, automobiles, steel and aluminum as well as pharmaceutical products will fall under categories or ‘sectors' of products that will be non-negotiable in all trade agreements for the tariff levy applied. Any nation who enters negotiations for new Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) will not be permitted to negotiate trade on semiconductor products, automobiles, steel, aluminum and medications. WATCH: Source: theconservativetreehouse.com Stephen Miller Reiterates Tariff Strategy Around Section 232 National Security Products Steel, Aluminum, Automobiles, Pharmaceuticals and components for semiconductor manufacturing all fall under the Section 232 “National Security” tariff umbrella. Meaning, the products within each of those sectors of manufacturing are handled ¹differently from all other tariffs as executed. WATCH: [¹NOTE: This approach could present a problem in future lawsuits, because the administration is now beginning to define what is classified as a ‘national security' product. Lawfare operatives will likely say in court that all other tariff sectors (not 232) are controlled by congress, not the President; at least that will be their predictable argument. The administration will counter by arguing all other sector tariffs are directed in response to the Fentanyl crisis, which is again described as a “national security” threat.] Source: theconservativetreehouse.com
