SHINING WITH ADHD  EPISODE #129: A Pediatrician's Role in ADHD Diagnosis and Care with Dr. Kelly Fradin  The Childhood Collective 10/4/2023   SUMMARY Here's an obvious news flash: parenting is the best of times and the worst of times, sometimes at the same time. Parenting children with challenges like ADHD or suspected ADHD can leave you feeling confused and overwhelmed. Figuring out where to get help and who you need in your corner can be a little tricky. We've been there, and we've got you covered! In this episode, we chat with Dr. Kelly Fradin about the pediatrician's role in ADHD Diagnosis and Care.   MEET DR. KELLY FRADIN Kelly Fradin is the Director of Pediatrics at the Atria Institute in NYC, where she works with leading experts to bring innovations in preventive care to their members and underserved populations. During her time working in public health in the South Bronx, she launched her Instagram account @adviceigivemyfriends to provide calm, realistic, and evidence-based advice to families. Pursuing this mission, she wrote Parenting in a Pandemic to help give parents the tools they needed to interpret the news and support their families during the pandemic's peak. Her new book, Advanced Parenting, seeks to support parents in navigating their children's challenges.   AFFILIATE INFORMATION We talk A LOT about executive function and what it takes for our kids with ADHD to plan and execute essential tasks in their lives. But what about us? The mental load of parenting is real, and there is SO MUCH we have to use our executive functions for. One of those things is meal planning. What does everyone like? What will my kids eat? Which family member can have dairy, and which one can't have gluten? The list goes on and on. We are all guilty of the “drive-by directions” trap when we want our kids to listen. None of these seem to work, and we just get louder and louder. Our tone gets angrier and angrier. Obvious ending? It doesn't work. Getting kids to listen is tough; getting kids with ADHD to listen is even more challenging. Remember, your kids want to do well, so they aren't playing a game of who can make mom the most mad. Their unique wiring requires a different communication strategy to get cooperation. In this episode, we share four tips to get your child with ADHD to listen without yelling.  These take practice, but we know you will notice a more calm environment as you incorporate them into your home!  MEET OUR TEAM We are Lori, Mallory, and Katie. On this week's edition of Soaring Child, we're joined by child psychologist Lori Long and certified speech language pathologist Katie Severson. They were instrumental in creating the Childhood Collective, designed to empower parents by teaching science-backed strategies to raise confident children with ADHD.   One approach is to look at the ABCs of behavior -- A being antecedent, B being behavior and C being consequences. The antecedent is looking at what occurs before the behavior that might trigger it. The consequence is what happens after the child engages in the behavior and how it serves them. For example, lying could be an avoidance behavior. It's important to ask kids what's bothering them and unpack the problem so you can solve it by changing up the antecedents.   Communication is essential in changing behavior, including asking questions like, “What's so hard about this?” or “What emotions were you feeling when I asked you to do this?” Instead of punishing your child for a behavior, ask yourself what your child's need is and what they are communicating to you. The goal is to teach a more desirable behavior to get those needs met.   It's also important to set up routines and really connect with your child by leaning into their interests and helping to build skills, especially their unique executive functioning skills.   Punishment will give you the quickest fix, but it doesn't teach any new skills, so it won't help kids in the long run. Teaching new behaviors takes time, but it can be done by using positive language, giving positive feedback, and building them up in a positive way.  That's how to make long-term changes in the brain.   Key Takeaways: [3:35] What the Childhood Collective is and how it formed [5:52] The ABCs of behavior [8:45] The example of lying as an ADHD behavior [12:08] Example of cleaning up their room [16:22] Focusing on connection [17:14] The role of executive functioning [21:52] Why punishment doesn't work in the long run [24:20] The right dose of medication [25:27] Dealing with homework [27:33] Using consequences in a positive way [33:38] Supporting kids with ADHD in school     How To Connect With Lori & Katie: www.thechildhoodcollective.com Instagram: @thechildhoodcollective Facebook: @childhoodcollective TikTok: @thechildhoodcollective   Memorable Quotes: “They get to escape something that's undesirable, and we try and figure that out to understand what they are trying to get and how we can give that to them in a way that's acceptable.”   “Instead of punishing your child for this thing that's maybe not going to be an effective punishment, you're looking at it and saying, what is my child's need here?”   “ADHD results in difficulty regulating attention, and when kids are focused on one thing, they're not hearing the other.”   “A punishment will actually give you the quickest fix, but it's also the shortest fix because it doesn't teach any new skills.”   “We really want parents to think about what could be going on here and how we can change the situation in the beginning and how we can set kids up for success.”    Dana Kay Resources:  Website - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/adhdthriveinstitute  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/74302454/  Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok - https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute     International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/    Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/25min-webinar-registration    ADHD Parenting Course - https://adhdthrivemethod.com/adhd-thrive-jump-start-parenting-4-adhd    ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/

I've been getting a lot of questions from my community about how to handle kids' challenging behaviors and where to get support. And a lot of the stories I hear about this kids send my “ADHD” alarm bell ringing. Kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can look like they are simply misbehaving or being defiant when in reality they have something getting in the way of them being able to meet expectations. “Kids do well when they can.” - Dr. Ross Greene Now, if you are a parent who has a child with ADHD, I know that it can be tough and that you might be feeling worried that something is wrong with your kiddo or that you're failing them somehow. And I also know many parents maybe suspect something is going on for their kid but are worried about them being diagnosed, labeled, and pidgeon-holed. I get that so much! I've had similar concerns for my own daughter when I was seeking to understand her struggles when she was younger. Navigating the world of diagnoses, therapies, and schooling accommodations can be confusing and lonely. And so, for this week's episode I wanted to help you understand how your child's brain works, help you see how this diagnosis can empower you as a parent, and can help your child get the support they need to do well in all their settings! And to help me with this conversation, I like to introduce you to a crew of amazing parenting and child development experts, Mallory Yee, Laurie Long, and Katie Syverson. Through their work in private practice, they saw a great need for parents to more easily access research-backed parenting tips and tools, particularly those parents raising kids with ADHD, anxiety, learning disorders, and speech/language delays.
