Our guest on this week's episode is Erin Mittlestaedt, the CEO of the FruitGuys. The world continues to react to the trade disruptions caused by the Trump administration's new tariffs. Of course, tariffs don't only mean that we pay more for imports, it also affects exports because of the retaliatory tariffs imposed by other countries that we trade with. Farmers will be among those hit the hardest by retaliatory tariffs. They may limit export markets and if other farmers are not exporting as much also that means the market will flood with more domestic products, reducing the income. Our guest shares what the new trade policies will mean for these farmers.  Despite anticipating geopolitical shifts, Chief Supply Chain Officers (CSCOs) remain largely unprepared for their impact. That's according to a recent report from British management consulting firm Egon Zehnder. The company's latest CSCO report surveying supply chain business leaders found that their jobs have many competing priorities demanding their attention. As a result, just 15% of CSCOs surveyed reported feeling prepared for the impact of trade policy changes such as tariffs.Increasing tariffs essentially means adding a tax on U.S. companies that import goods. As a result, these companies either source less of their products internationally or consumers will buy less of them because of higher prices on the shelves. Either way, freight carriers won't be happy because they'll be hauling less cargo. A new report shows the possible impacts of the tariff war on the carrier community and it also speaks of the probability that growth in international trade will slow this year.Supply Chain Xchange  also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane.  It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. Send us a textEvery year, the world's preeminent leadership advisory firm, Egon Zehnder, surveys CEOs to identify issues and challenges they face and how they deal with them. In this podcast, we highlight key findings and discuss the implications for CEOs and Nomination Committees challenged to align on the search criteria for CEOsIn this podcast, Dr Sabine Dembkowski, Founder and Managing Partner of Better Boards, discusses how to lead through complexity with Dr Nadine Rinck, a partner in Egon Zehnder's Munich office. She heads Egon Zehnder's infrastructure sector in EMEA and focuses on board advisory and CEO succession across sectors. “95% of the CEOs expect groundbreaking systemic changes in the next decade”Nadine shares that 95% of CEOs anticipated groundbreaking systemic changes in the next decade.   The study also identified the top five critical challenges for CEOs: talent acquisition and development, AI adoption and impact, market disruptions, geopolitical instability and climate change/ecological impact.  Nadine highlights that these challenges are not isolated, and their interconnected nature makes them even more difficult to navigate.  “The world is currently moving from complicated to complex”Nadine explains that complexity introduces challenges for which no clear solution exists, no matter how much effort or money is invested. The world is shifting from being merely complicated to truly complex. This shift brings heightened uncertainty and often fear among teams and stakeholders.  “What can I do to make my CEO become better and support him or her in navigating this complexity?”Nadine emphasises that navigating complexity does not mean CEOs must solve every problem themselves or adopt a hierarchical approach.  Instead, CEOs are turning to specific sources for advice and support when tackling complex challenges.  However, a surprising gap exists in how often CEOs engage independent board members or chairs for guidance.  Only 17% consult their independent board members and just 13% turn to their chairs for advice.  “Leaders will need to develop adaptive abilities”Nadine acknowledges that tackling today's challenges requires a fundamental shift - a complete update of the “operating system” of leadership.  For future CEOs, this means transforming their leadership identity and focusing on emotional intelligence and personal growth.  She outlines three meta-competencies that form the foundation for adaptive leadership. The first is self-awareness, which requires the ability to self-reflect and be brutally honest with oneself.  The second meta-competency is relational capability, which includes building trust, forming networks, and genuinely connecting with others.  The third meta-competency she describes is adaptability, which requires leaders to let go of outdated beliefs and unlearn no longer beneficial behaviours or strategies.  “Take people out of their comfort zones and see them in different settings and environments”Nadine emphasises that while a candidate's CV and experience remain critical, boards (and particularly nomination committees) must go beyond traditional criteria to understand behaviours and personalities for internal talent and CEO succession pipelines, building relationships with potential candidates much earlier in their careers, long before the formal selection process begins.  The three top takeaways for effective boards from our conversation are the three meta-competencies to help CEOs navigate complexities:1.      Self-awareness2.     Relational capabilities3.     Adaptability.

On today's show, in addition to reading the chapter, "My Son Has Surpassed Me!" from his book, sharing wisdom from others, and a bit of humor, Paul played Part 2 of his interview with JAN STEWART. JAN STEWART is a Toronto mother of two children who have multiple and complex mental health disorders. She is also a mental health governance expert; and she is currently the Chair of Kerry's Place Autism Services. We will discuss all of the above, as well as her book, "Hold On Tight - A Parent's Journey Raising Children With Mental Illness".  FROM HER WEBSITE: "Jan Stewart is a highly regarded mental health governance expert and advocate. Growing up in New York and moving to Toronto after marrying a Canadian, she was untouched by major adversity throughout her youth and imagined a similar, happy life for her children. In her raw and emotional book Hold on Tight: A Parent's Journey Raising Children with Mental Illness, she candidly describes the shock she and her husband faced when each of their two young children started exhibiting troubling behaviours. While it took time to find the right doctors, diagnoses and treatments, Jan's roller coaster journey with the children's multiple mental health disorders taught her to insist on an integrated partnership approach with all those involved and propelled her to help parents of children with similar challenges. Her book gives readers invaluable insights and advice to become empowered and inspires them to persevere and never give up. It also importantly serves to better educate health care professionals on the parental perspective, as well as families, friends, educators and employers of those affected by these challenges. While Jan takes great pride in her business career, the majority of which was spent as a senior Partner with the global executive search firm Egon Zehnder, it is her mental health governance experience that has been the most meaningful to her. This includes currently Chairing the Board at Kerry's Place Autism Services, Canada's largest autism services provider, and previously serving as Vice Chair at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. She also served on the Parent Advisory Council at Mass General Hospital's Department of Neuropsychopharmacology, the Advisory Council of Access Open Minds, the Advisory Board of LIGHTS, and the Board of Directors of the former Ontario OCD Network. In addition, she co-founded the OCD Parent Advisory Group at SickKids Hospital." janstewartauthor.com

Ultra targeted content engages audiences better–but growing a global brand with a small marketing team means that it needs to be balanced with the art of repurposing without sacrificing quality. Cheryl Martel knows this firsthand. Carol is co-author with David Noble of Real-Time Leadership: Find Your Winning Moves When the Stakes are High*. In this conversation, Carol and I explore the mindsets and tactics that are helpful when taking on a new, big leadership role. We discuss how vision, resolution, scope, and altitude play a key role in your success early on. Plus, we invite listeners to consider the importance of peer relationships and recognizing how others see you as the role begins. Key Points Having the right altitude often means looking much more broadly at the organization and moving past a subconscious bias towards your old role or department. The “subject matter expert trap” is a common one. Your awareness will help you avoid it — or recognize it faster. Good peer relationships are one of the strongest predicators of success in a new role. Make time to build these critical connections. Learning to accept recognition is a key competency for an executive leader. Treat it as you would receiving any kind of gift. Have an enterprise mindset and remember that people perceive you as representing the organization vs. just yourself. Thinking like the entity can help you show up in the way you intend. Welcome to an interview with a leadership coaching legend, David Noble. Most leaders experience a lack of motivation to continue the things they once had a passion for. So, how do you rekindle the fire of motivation when it starts to die? The key is to know your “why” and assess if your reason is strong enough to continue the journey. In this episode, David shares the role he plays in reframing things and bringing the best out of leaders, executives, and CEOs. David shares a powerful new framework called MOVE that characterizes great and extraordinary leaders. Most of us dislike having only one strategy to win. In David's framework, he discusses the four simple yet powerful options that will take you to the same goal: lean in, lean back, lean with, and don't lean. David Noble has more than twenty years of global experience advising CEOs, their teams, and major investors on leadership and strategy, and an additional fifteen years as a top executive. He was named by Thinkers50 as one of the world's top coaches. Mental illness affects some 1.2 million of our children and youth. According to the Mental health Commission of Canada, Jan Stewart is a highly regarded mental health governance expert and advocate. In addition, she co-founded the OCD Parent Advisory Group at SickKids Hospital. Jan is a Diamond Life Master in bridge and enjoys genealogy, fitness and dance. Only 20% of CEOs are able of driving change in their organizations. According to the latest CEO study from Egon Zehnder, a poor alignment between the CEO and the leadership team is one of the main reasons. You can have a great purpose, the best vision, and a wonderful strategy but if your team is not aligned, everyone is gonna go in different directions. Whitney Johnson is the Co-Founder and CEO of Disruption Advisors, a talent development company. Whitney is a globally-recognized thought leader. author, keynote speaker, executive coach, consultant, and a popular LinkedIn Learning instructor. In this conversation, Whitney discusses how musicality has lessons for the business world, and the wide applications of the S-Curve. https://bit.ly/TLP-328   Key Takeaways [2:35] At her daughter's prompting during the pandemic, Whitney and her family started watching Korean dramas. The family became obsessed with them. Whitney now studies Korean for two minutes a day on Duolingo. Whitney describes the characteristics of Korean dramas. [5:22] Whitney majored in music, studying classical piano and jazz. Because of her musical background, when she structures a keynote, a book, or a podcast, she looks for musicality and a musical structure to it. Musical structure and musicality inform the work she does. Also, as an experienced accompanist, she knows how to be second, allowing her to be a good interviewer, and as a coach, to listen well. [7:04] Brett Mitchell, the former conductor of the Colorado Symphony, said that music is what happens between the notes. Whitney discusses pauses relating to leadership and cites Clayton Christiansen, saying that partway through his career, Clayton Christiansen started a practice of praying before teaching a class. Once he started that practice, he started to have a significant impact on his students. [8:42] Whitney suggests that before you speak, have a meeting, or a coaching session, you pause and think about the person you're about to speak to, and how to convey to the person that they matter to you, that is an element of leadership. [10:33] Wayne Muller, author of Sabbath, pointed out the pauses in Martin Luther King's exclamation, “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!” [11:41] Gino Wickman, in The EOS Life, recommends entrepreneurs take sabbaticals. One of Jim's clients just took a sabbatical and reported that stepping back and taking a break allowed them to reflect and then grow. [12:20] Whitney has a LinkedIn Learning class, Grow Yourself, Grow Your Leaders, and a book, Smart Growth. Whitney's view is that we are wired to grow. Virtuous growth is growing in such a way that everyone around you grows as well. She believes that human growth is unbounded. [13:23] Sociologist Everett Rogers applied the S-Curve to the study of how quickly innovation is adopted. Working with Clayton Christiansen, Whitney realized she could apply the S-Curve to individual change and growth. Growth comes in three stages: slow (launch), fast (sweet spot), and slow (master place). Every time you start a new role or a new job, you go through the curve. This is covered in Smart Growth. [14:45] Whitney's LinkedIn course focuses on how to create the conditions where people around you can grow, with the resources they need, and how they can feel connected to what they're doing and the people they're working with. Whitney also talks about building resilience and nurturing people. If you can do all those things, you're creating conditions wherein the people around you can grow. [16:59] Whitney makes the underlying assumption that if you will grow yourself then, by the contagion effect, the people around you will grow. Then, by default, your business will grow. [17:49] You can manage your organization as a portfolio of curves. The people at the curve's launch point will need the most support. They will also have a fresh perspective, opening the door to innovation. You want about 20% of the people in your organization to be new, 60% to be in the sweet spot, and 20% in master, ready for a new challenge. This is a good distribution for innovation. [20:10] De-prioritize the things you do really well that somebody else could do. Whitney gives an example from a client. If you stop doing the things you should delegate to others, you will have time to do the things only you can do, and you get out of the way for them to work on the steep part of the S-Curve. [23:06] Every organization needs to have, as part of their vision, growing human beings and helping them reach their potential. The vision starts with the founders, and as people join the organization, they begin to co-create the vision with the founders. Everyone helps each other grow. In the most fluid, powerful organizations, everyone contributes to the creation of the vision. [26:56] Whitney addresses growth pre-pandemic, in-pandemic, and post-pandemic. A lot of adaptation and resilience have been required. When people are under stress, they go to default stress behaviors. You need to make sure people work together and not against each other. People want to grow but are not always sure how to do it. This goes back to Whitney's course, Grow Yourself, Grow Your Leaders. [28:39] Whitney asks Jan and Jim for their thoughts on getting people to work together under stress. Jim states that when people are stressed they need time and space to solve their problems. People are pausing to figure out how to work together. People need time and space to get up to game speed. Executives are not paid to be busy. Pausing is a good way to grow by asking yourself tough questions. [31:35] Whitney has an assessment that she administers to clients. It includes seven accelerants of growth. The one that ranks the lowest is frequently “Step back to grow.” People are not taking time to pause and reflect. Whitney quotes Tiffany Shlain who asks, “What if we thought of ‘rest' as technology because the promise of technology is to make you more productive?” [34:17] Egon Zehnder surveyed 1,000 executives whether they strongly agreed that to transform your organization you need to transform yourself. Before the pandemic, 18% of executives agreed. After the pandemic, 805 of the executives agreed. The only way you have the moral authority to ask people to change is if you, yourself, are changing. The fundamental unit of change is the individual at every level. [37:52] Whitney lists some people that inspire her, and why: Rashika Tolshan, who wrote about the Queen of England passing away, Brené Brown, Musician Jacob Collier, author Richie Norton, and NFL QB Steve Young. Each of them inspired Whitney with their visions of growth. [41:35] When Whitney was making her list of influential people, her default was to go to all men. She had to make sure she included some women. She had to be very mindful and deliberate to determine who is actually influencing her and she wanted a diversity of perspectives. Jim highlights the leadership lesson of intentionality. [42:49] Whitney's audience homework: On the topic of pausing and resting, listen to these two episodes of Whitney's Step Back to Grow podcast: Episode 139 with filmmaker Tiffany Schlain and Episode 180. Don't avoid taking a pause to rest. [43:57] Closing quote: Remember, “It's all to do with the training: you can do a lot if you're properly trained.” — Queen Elizabeth II   Quotable Quotes “Because of being a musician, I think of things in a musical sort of way. When I'm structuring a keynote; … a book; … a podcast, there's always a sense of, ‘Is there a musicality to it; is there a musical structure to it?'” — Whitney “I wrote a piece about the importance of taking a break, that you needed to rest because the ability to rest was going to allow you to recharge so that you could then move forward.” — Whitney “For me, growth is our default setting. We're wired to grow.” — Whitney “Every time we start something new, we're on a new S-Curve. There are three stages. There's the launch point that feels slow, there's the sweet spot, … where growth is fast, … and … the master place, where growth is … slow.” — Whitney “People who are successful are intentional. It doesn't just fall in your lap. … Successful people are intentional people and [a high] level intentionality is something to be admired and something for people listening to this podcast to take away.” — Jim   Resources Mentioned Theleadershippodcast.com Sponsored by: Darley.com Rafti Advisors. The Strategy Skills Podcast: Management Consulting | Strategy, Operations & Implementation | Critical Thinking

Welcome to Strategy Skills episode 281, an interview with a leadership coaching legend, David Noble. Noble has served as a senior adviser to Egon Zehnder and Oliver Wyman.   Get David's book here: Real-Time Leadership: Find Your Winning Moves When the Stakes Are High. Description: This podcast episode is releasing during the US Memorial Day holiday weekend and therefore, I am going to give you a quick update on Career Pivot and the Repurpose Your Career Podcast and then I am going to rebroadcast the most impactful episode for me from 2021 which was How to Switch Industries from Executive Search Consultants Perspective with Glenn Zwieg. I have reached an interesting point with Career Pivot and this podcast. Traffic to the Career Pivot website declined significantly during 2020 and 2021. However, the downloads for this podcast stayed pretty flat during that same period. In 2022, the monthly downloads for the podcast now are roughly equal to the number of visitors to the website, a little less than 10,000 per month. At one time the website received around 30,000 visitors per month. That changed dramatically during the pandemic. The podcast is now steadily growing at a significant rate while website traffic is staying pretty flat. Therefore, this podcast is getting most of my attention. Besides I like recording and producing this podcast as it is the greatest networking tool, I have ever had. I meet so many interesting people. When I launched Career Pivot way back in 2012, it was a money-making operation. That is no longer true. Since we moved to Mexico in 2018, it has shifted to being a passion project for me. As long as it does not lose money, I am good with that. I like when it makes money because I can do some fun projects and invest in the podcast with the funds the business generates. Earlier this year, I started publishing this podcast on YouTube not knowing whether it was worth my time. I now have 15 YouTube subscribers and will have to see what it does the rest of the year. Maybe I can be a YouTube influencer … NOT! Some of that money I am making right now is paying my co-author, Susan Lahey, to help me with some advanced white papers. Therefore, I ask you to share this podcast in whatever method you prefer. The more people who listen to the podcast, the more people we can help! Given this is the US Memorial Day weekend, I thought I would rebroadcast the episode from 2021 that had the greatest impact on me. This was my discussion with Glenn Zweig. Glenn provides executive search and leadership advisory services in Egon Zehnder's Digital, Tech-Enabled Services, and Healthcare practices. He is also the host of the podcast called The Art of Excellence where he interviews high-achieving people across all walks of life to find common threads of success. I wanted Glenn on the show for 2 reasons. He has a deep understanding of the executive search process and I wanted his perspective on what is he looking for when candidates are switching industries. The second reason is he has a great podcast, The Art of Excellence, that is completely separate from what he does as an executive recruiter. Glenn suggests that you need to put yourself out there when pivoting industries and I want you to hear a bit of Glenn's podcasting story. A lot of the ideas I have around how to handle disruption came from this episode. This episode is sponsored by Career Pivot.
