Pastor Angela shares a message on biblical remembrance. Deuteronomy 4:9 NIV Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Judges 2:10 NIV And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.  1 Corinthians 1:5-7 NIV For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge—God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 1 Corinthians 10:11 NLT These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.  Deuteronomy 4:9 NIV Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. To forget a person is to lose touch with the story of the relationship and all it meant in the past and should still mean now. - Christopher J. H. Wright “To be without a story is to live without any sort of script that might help us to know who we are and what we're about. We flail and meander. We frantically try on roles and identities to see if they fit… to see yourself in the story is to have a name, a backstory, a project - all of which serve as rails to run on, something stable and given we can count on.” - James K. A. Smith Romans 12:1-2 NIV Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Listen along as we continue through the book of Hebrews. Notes//Quotes: Hebrews 8:1-13 - Jack Hebrews 8:1-13 The Israelites believed that the Temple in Jerusalem was the place above all where heaven and earth met, quite literally. When you went into the Temple, especially when you went into the holy of holies in the middle of it, you were actually going into heaven itself. “Heaven' is not, in the Bible, simply a ‘spiritual', in the sense of ‘non-physical', dimension; it is God's space, God's realm, which interlocks with our realm, our world (‘earth') in all sorts of ways.” NT Wright "If "gospel" means good news, then Jeremiah had some for sure. He saw the judgment coming, in horrifying technicolour. But he saw beyond it to the redeeming, restoring grace of God, and indeed he speaks of the "new covenant", which takes us to the heart of the gospel in Christ." ~ Christopher J. H. Wright Colossians 2:6-7 “One of the tragedies of the contemporary church is that, just when the world seems to be ready to listen, the church often seems to have little or nothing to say. For the church itself is confused; it shares in the current bewilderment, instead of addressing it. The church is insecure; it is uncertain of its identity, mission and message. It stammers and stutters, when it should be proclaiming the gospel with boldness. Indeed, the major reason for its diminishing influence in the West is its diminishing faith” John Stott

“The Great Commission” (Matthew 28:16-20) is the central driving mission for God's people. But here is a question to consider: How does this commission that churches have for people relate to the mission that God has for every aspect of life? Before we know what our mission is, we must first know what God's mission is.  Christopher J. H. Wright (PhD, Cambridge) is the Global Ambassador of the Langham Partnership, strengthening leaders in churches around the world. He was chair of the Lausanne Theology Working Group and the chief architect of The Cape Town Commitment from the Third Lausanne Congress of 2010. He has written many books including commentaries on Deuteronomy, Jeremiah, Lamentations, and Ezekiel. Two incredibly influential books have been The Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible's Grand Narrative (IVP Academic) and The Mission of God's People: A Biblical Theology of the Church's Mission (Zondervan Academic).  His latest book is The Great Story and the Great Commission: Participating in the Biblical Drama of Mission (Baker Academic, 2023). This book was the winner of the Christianity Today 2024 Book Award for “Missions/Global Church” and the Outreach 2024 Resource of the Year for “Mission and Cross-Cultural.” In this book, Dr. Wright shows us that how we read the Bible has a profound impact on how we understand what mission is. He says, “People read and preach the Bible in tiny bits and pieces, for its promises or rules or doctrines, and fail to take it as the true story of the universe – past, present, and future – a story in which we are called to participate as coworkers with God.” You can purchase Chris Wright's books from independent booksellers Byron and Beth Borger at Hearts & Minds Bookstore. Today in the Word Devotional

Greed, sex, arrogance, power. These are all examples of idolatry that are as true today as they were in biblical times, said Christopher J. H. Wright. The author of “Here Are Your Gods”: Faithful Discipleship in Idolatrous Times added: “Idolatry often involves the perversion of something good in itself, like family, work, beauty, or sex.” Moses confronted idolatry and other sins many times during the Exodus, but the golden calf episode was the most significant. The covenant had just been affirmed by the nation (Exodus 19). Moses had communicated the Law, including the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20). The initial instructions for the tabernacle had even been given. Nonetheless, the people made and worshiped an idol, including the “revelry” of sexual immorality (Ex. 32:6). Moses was on top of Mount Sinai for 40 days. The people had grown impatient, and their already weak faith dried up. Instead of standing his ground, Aaron, the new high priest (Exodus 29), went along with their idolatry. When Moses confronted him later, he offered the ridiculous excuse seen in Exodus 32:24. The golden calf may have represented the Egyptian bull god Apis. In any case, the people had flagrantly broken the second commandment. Moses conveyed God’s righteous anger by literally breaking the two tablets of the Law (v. 19). He also enacted a beautiful piece of poetic justice by grinding up the idol into powder, sprinkling it in the water, and forcing the Israelites to drink it (v. 20). Yet the sin continued and the people were “running wild” (v. 25). So Moses called out, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me” (v. 26). The Levites answered and went through the camp, killing the idolaters. Their zeal helped consecrate or set them apart for special service (v. 29). >> While we may not bow down to a golden calf, the temptation to idolatry is very much alive in our day! Do we serve the three Ps—personal freedom, political power, and prosperity—or the Lord?

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."—Paul (Galatians 5:22f) This week we welcome Rev. Dr. Christopher J. H. Wright for a conversation on his newly-published Cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit : Growing in Christlikeness, a gem of a book exploring—in straightforward language, yet covering much theological ground—Paul's teaching on how the indwelling of God's Spirit in the believer can free us from both legalism and selfishness by helping us to grow more Christlike in character. Christopher Wright is International Ministries Director of the Langham Partnership, providing literature, scholarships, and preaching training for pastors in Majority World churches and seminaries. He has written many books including works on mission, ethics and bible commentaries. He is an ordained priest in the Church of England, and for many years served as academic dean and then principal of All Nations Christian College. He has chaired the Lausanne Theology Working Group, and is the chief architect of The Cape Town Commitment from the Third Lausanne Congress, 2010.
