On the version of Hot off the Wire posted July 25 at 7:30 a.m. CT: President Joe Biden has delivered a solemn call to voters to defend the country’s democracy. In an address Wednesday he laid out his decision to drop his bid for reelection and throw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden insisted “the defense of democracy is more important than any title.” He did not directly call out former President Donald Trump, whom he has called an existential threat to democracy. “Nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy,” Biden said in his 10-minute address from the Oval Office. “And that includes personal ambition.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to make a long-awaited White House visit to meet with President Joe Biden and likely Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris at an important moment for all three politicians. In a filing on Tuesday, the administration acknowledged to the Supreme Court that the end of Title 42 will likely lead to "disruption and a temporary increase in unlawful border crossings" but asked the court to reject efforts by a group of conservative-leaning states to keep Title 42 in place. Migrants have been denied requests to seek asylum under U.S. and international law 2.5 million times since March 2020 on grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19 under a public-health rule called Title 42. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/texas-gov-abbott-polar-vortex-threatens-migrants-bidens-border-disaster Texas Gov. Abbott warns polar vortex threatens migrants due to Biden’s border ‘disaster’ Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told President Joe Biden on Tuesday that his "disaster" immigration policy is putting lives at risk as a polar vortex expected this week will create bitter conditions for the thousands of illegal immigrants who continue to trek into the U.S. "With cold temperatures gripping Texas, your inaction to secure the southern border is putting the lives of migrants at risk, particularly in the City of El Paso," the Republican governor told Biden in a letter. "Your policies will leave many people in the bitter, dangerous cold as a polar vortex moves into Texas." "This terrible crisis for border communities in Texas is a catastrophe of your own making," Abbott wrote. The governor said Biden has failed in his constitutional duty to protect the border, which disproportionately impacts Texas. Abbott warned that the situation would only get worse if the Title 42 policy ends this week. That pandemic-era policy allows border agents to turn migrants away at the border, and ending it could lead to a surge of migrants at the southern border just as Texas faces some of its coldest temperatures. The Title 42 policy was set to expire Wednesday, but an appeal is being heard by the Supreme Court, which could decide as early as Tuesday evening. The Department of Homeland Security projects between 9,000 and 15,000 migrant encounters a day once the policy ends, which would add to the already highest annual total of encounters in U.S. history. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted an end to Title 42 would not mean the border is open. To suggest so, she said, is misinformation and "doing the work of these smugglers." Vice President Kamala Harris, who was tasked with identifying the root cause of mass migration to the southern border, has insisted in recent months that the border is secure. Abbott said he would continue to work with state-based officials to stem the tide of illegal immigration. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/white-house-confirms-zelenskyys-travel-us-ahead-massive-bill-funding-ukrainian-military White House confirms Zelenskyy's travel to US ahead of massive bill funding Ukrainian military The Biden administration confirmed early Wednesday morning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is on his way to the U.S. to discuss more assistance for the country during its ongoing conflict with Russia. In addition to meeting with President Biden, Zelenskyy is slated to address Congress Wednesday afternoon as lawmakers plan to shell out more money for Ukraine in its latest $1.7 trillion spending bill. The budget includes more than $45 billion in new military and humanitarian aid for his country. A press statement from the Biden admin Wednesday morning said Zelenskyy's address to a joint meeting of Congress will demonstrate the "strong, bipartisan support for Ukraine." In its official statement, the White House added President Biden has been rallying the world to support Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February. "Three hundred days ago, Russia launched a brutal assault against Ukraine. In response, President Biden rallied the world to support the people of Ukraine as they defend their sovereignty and territorial integrity," the statement read. "During the visit, President Biden will announce a significant new package of security assistance to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression." Extensive security measures were already underway in the nation's capital early Wednesday morning as the District prepared for the high-profile visit. As early as 4:30 a.m., Capitol Police cruisers could be seen lined up outside the Capitol building along with cement barricades blocking roads leading up to the building. On behalf of bipartisan Congressional leaders, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., sent a letter to Zelenskyy encouraging his visit to Washington, D.C., in a letter explaining the leaders' "immense respect and admiration" for the Ukrainian president. The pending aid would be the U.S.' largest amount of financial assistance to Ukraine since the war started and is intended to support the fight against Russia for months to come, according to the Associated Press. Congress is also expected to announce a major package of $1.8 billion in military aid on Wednesday, which will include a Patriot missile battery and precision guided bombs for Ukraine's fighter jets. U.S. officials said the package will include about $1 billion in weapons from Pentagon stocks and $800 million in funding through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, according to the AP. Though the massive spending bill is expected to receive support from many Republicans in the House and Senate, not all are on board with the additional funding. Some GOP lawmakers argued the new round of aid, which will bring the U.S. commitment to the war to over $110 billion, is improper without greater accountability. https://www.theepochtimes.com/us-senate-advances-1-66-trillion-government-funding-bill_4936469.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport US Senate Advances $1.66 Trillion Government-Funding Bill A $1.66 trillion government spending bill drew overwhelming bipartisan support in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday as lawmakers steered it toward passage before a weekend deadline to avoid a partial shutdown of federal agencies. Democratic and Republican negotiators agreed early Tuesday morning on the sweeping bill to fund the federal government through the end of its fiscal year on Sept. 30, raising funding from about $1.5 trillion in the last fiscal year. The Senate voted 70-25 to proceed to debate of the bill, with some Republican senators hoping to offer amendments. A handful of conservative Senate Republicans on Tuesday said they objected to the bill, but would not try to stop its passage. The bill includes other measures agreed on by negotiators from both parties, including a ban on the use of TikTok on government-owned devices and clarification of Congress’s role in certifying elections, an attempt to avoid a repeat of the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021. Senate and House leaders aim to pass the 4,155-page bill and send it to Democratic President Joe Biden for signing by the end of the week to ensure there are no interruptions to the government’s activities. The Tuesday vote was the first in a series of steps clearing the way for passage by Friday. Failure to pass legislation in time could bring a partial government shutdown beginning Saturday, just before Christmas, and possibly lead into a months-long standoff after Republicans take control of the House on Jan. 3, breaking the grip of Biden’s Democrats on both chambers of Congress. Budget experts found fault with the bill’s size. Included in the bill is $44.9 billion in emergency assistance to Ukraine and NATO allies and $40.6 billion to assist communities across the United States recovering from natural disasters and other matters. The Ukraine funds would be used for military training, equipment, logistics and intelligence support, as well as for replenishing U.S. equipment sent to Kyiv. It also includes funding to prepare for and respond to potential nuclear and radiological incidents in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has not ruled out the use of nuclear weapons in the conflict with Ukraine. Included in the Ukraine package is $13.4 billion in economic aid and $2.4 billion to help resettle Ukrainians in the United States. The military aid would be on top of the record $858 billion in U.S. defense spending for the year, which is up from last year’s $740 billion and also exceeds Biden’s request. U.S. lawmakers also included a proposal to bar federal employees from using the Chinese short-video app TikTok on government-owned devices. And they backed a proposal to lift a looming deadline imposing a new safety standard for modern cockpit alerts for two new versions of Boeing Co’s 737 MAX aircraft. https://nypost.com/2022/12/20/intruder-able-to-walk-into-uvalde-school-unchallenged-during-safety-audit/ ‘Intruder’ able to walk into Uvalde school unchallenged as new report slams medical response A Texas safety inspector posing as an intruder was recently able to stroll unchallenged into a Uvalde school — as a damning new investigation also blamed a “flawed medical response” for failing to save some of the 21 slaughtered in a mass shooting at Robb Elementary. The inspector was even able to enter through a back door that did not latch, eerily similar to how 18-year-old madman Salvador Ramos got into Robb Elementary before killing 19 fourth-graders and two teachers. The shocking breach was revealed at a Uvalde school board meeting Monday night, attended by at least a dozen family members of victims of the May shooting, the San Antonio Express-News said. Grieving loved ones were furious that “somebody just walked right in” seven months after one of the deadliest school shootings in history, KSAT also said of the meeting. As part of a state-mandated security audit, an inspector posing as an intruder attempted to gain access to three different schools in the grief-stricken area — strolling into one unchallenged, the meeting heard. Interim district Superintendent Gary Patterson admitted the error, saying the ongoing security lapse “is really 100 percent my responsibility,” telling the meeting: “We have got to secure those areas.” Berlinda Arreola, the grandmother of Uvalde victim Amerie Jo Garza, shared a picture of a school safety officer sitting and looking at his phone. https://trendingpoliticsnews.com/breaking-kari-lake-trial-reveals-42-5-of-randomly-examined-ballots-were-improper/ Kari Lake Trial Reveals 42.5% of Randomly Examined Ballots Were Improper According to Republican governor candidate Kari Lake’s legal team, 42.5% of examined ballots in Maricopa County for the 2022 governor’s race were illegitimate. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a video address before Congress Wednesday, in which he asked for additional support to protect the country's citizens against Russian military brutality.Following the speech, Biden pledged to send an additional $800 million to Ukraine to boost security measures. This is in addition to $200 million in military aid to Ukraine Biden approved on Saturday. One ask that Zelenskyy is not likely to see answered: a U.S.-led no fly zone, which the Biden administration opposes as it seeks to avoid a direct military conflict with Russia. This episode: White House correspondent Asma Khalid, acting congressional correspondent Deirdre Walsh, and senior political editor and correspondent Ron Elving.Connect:Email the show at nprpolitics@npr.orgJoin the NPR Politics Podcast Facebook Group.Subscribe to the NPR Politics Newsletter.Find and support your local public radio station.

Ukrainian President Zelensky delivered a powerful message to a joint session of U.S. Congress Wednesday morning. Zelensky invoked the memories of America's darkest moments. "Remember Pearl Harbor," he said, "Remember September 11th." Death from sky visited on Americans just as death from the sky is now being visited on the Ukrainian people. He showed a gut wrenching video showing charred bodies, fleeing refugees, and bombs, one after another destroying Ukrainian cities and killing civilians. He praised President Biden for the help he's provided so far but then implored him to do more. If not a "no fly zone" then more air defense systems, more planes, more weapons to fight the Russian aggressors. We discuss the takeaways from Zelensky's speech. We'll also listen to an excerpt from our talk with the former chief of the Ukrainian Air-force about what the Ukrainians really need. And finally, we'll listen to the comments of the former top C.I.A. official about Vladimir Putin's murderous past and what that can mean for the future of Ukraine.GUESTS:Dan Hoffman (@danielhoffmanDC), Ret. As President Zelensky addressed Congress Wednesday and asked for more aid President Biden called Vladimir Putin a "war criminal" for the assault on Ukraine. This as civilians continue to bear the brunt of the fighting, especially in Ukraine's south. Now entering its fourth week the war shows little sign of letting up despite negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Jane Ferguson reports from Kyiv. In this episode of the National Roundtable Podcast the guys discuss the Ukraine war in the context of "freedom." The Ukrainian Klitschko brothers, Vitali and Wladimir (both former heavyweight boxing champions) say they are staying to fight for their freedom. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky (virtually) addressed the U.S. Congress Wednesday as he stays to fight for Ukraine's freedom. What is the value of "freedom" in light of today's Progressive Left that seemingly values security over freedom. Polls consistently show young Democrats today prefer Socialism over Capitalism, COVID controls over liberty, etc. Would today's American Progressives consider "freedom" important enough to fight for it? Or would they be content with Putin's Communism with the government taking care of their basic needs, such as food, shelter and healthcare? A recent Quinnipiac Poll asked Americans if the U.S. were invaded, similarly to Ukraine, would you stay or flee? Most Republicans said they would fight over flee (68% to 25%). Most Independents would also fight over flee (57% to 36%), however, most Democrats said they would flee over fight (52% to 40%). What is "freedom?" How do we define it? From where does it come? And is the new generation of Progressives losing a passion for it?

Once again David Wein shows us he has absolutely no clue what is going on in the world. Not to fear, David C. Guggenheim is here to break down the most pressing stories of the day. 1) Effort To Remove Calif. Gov. Newsom Collects Enough Signatures To Force Recall Vote - Recall Gavin 2020, posted a lengthy list of grievances against the governor on its website: "Unaffordable housing. Record homelessness. Rising crime. Failing schools. Independent contractors thrown out of work. Exploding pension debt. And now, a locked down population while the prisons are emptied." - If the recall election is held, voters would face two questions on the ballot: whether to remove Newsom from office and who should replace him. Newsom is not allowed to appear on the list of replacement candidates 2) The U.S. Census Bureau on Monday rolled out the first data from its count of American residents, numbers that will be used to apportion seats in the House of Representatives for the next decade. - 7 States losing seats include: Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and California - 6 States gaining: Montana, Oregon, Texas, Colorado, North Carolina and Florida 3) COVID raging in India - India, reported more than 17.6 million cases since the pandemic began last year (real number could be 30 times higher) - Mass burnings of Covid victims 4) Biden has called the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians between 1915-17 (WWI) a genocide at the hands of The Ottoman Empire. - "The American people honor all those Armenians who perished in the genocide that began 106 years ago today," Biden said in a statement on Saturday, marking the annual Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. - Turkey contests the figures and denies the killings were systematically orchestrated or constitute a genocide. 5) Biden gives his address to Congress Wednesday & marks his 100th day in office this Thursday.

National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins told Congress Wednesday that no safety standards will be compromised as the government evaluates the three COVID-19 vaccines that have advanced to Phase 3 clinical trials. His remarks came a day after a group of pharmaceutical companies made a similar safety pledge and after Astra-Zeneca halted its vaccine study when a participant became seriously ill. The reassurances follow recent statements by President Trump that a vaccine would be available before Election Day, a claim that health experts widely dispute. We'll talk about the status of COVID-19 vaccine research.

On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, former Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is scheduled to testify in Congress Wednesday, wrote an outrageous report with footnotes that are laughable and not taken seriously by the Department of Justice. Volume two is an illegitimate report by an illegitimate prosecutor. If Mueller believed that President Trump should be indicted he should have written it in his report, but he didn't. Instead, he used vague ambiguous language to skirt the truth. The fact is that the elements of obstruction were not there! On Wednesday, Republicans should ask Mueller to make Don McGahn’s 30 hours of testimony available to Congress and the American people to determine if there are any exculpatory statements. He should be asked of his and his staff's communications with the media and the whereabouts of the phone records if such communications exist. Despite Mueller stating that he could not exonerate Trump, which was an irrelevant statement of fact because prosecutors don't have the power to exonerate anyone, he was implying that he couldn't indict him due to the DOJ policy on indicting a sitting president. Then, the silence of Jewish members of Congress and the media on the hateful anti-Semitic remarks from Rep's. Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Tlaib is a loathsome hateful human being and continues her support of the anti-Semitic BDS movement. Sadly they don't realize that making false comparisons to the civil rights movement won't make their hatred of Jews any less despicable. Later, the center has moved to the left and the national debt continues to be ignored by both parties; which will eventually destroy our society. Ignore, the cheerleaders saying all is well — the Progressives in Washington have won; Republicans have willfully bought into the progressive addiction to spending. Discretionary spending is up 22% over Obama's presidency. This is not okay! The swamp's massive federal spending is a bad thing! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller is scheduled to testify in front of Congress Wednesday. He’ll answer questions about the 400-plus page report he delivered to the Attorney General in March. The report details a two-year investigation on Russian election interference and whether President Trump obstructed justice. It left almost as many open questions as there were before Mueller began his probe. Some people argue the President has been cleared and it’s time to move on. How will what Mueller says to lawmakers change the public’s perspective? Will his testimony alter the trajectory in Washington? How will it impact policy? Neal Katyal, Georgetown Law professor, joins Ted Olson, former Solicitor General, and Garrett Graff, director of a Cyber-Journalism Initiative at the Aspen Institute. Mary Louise Kelly, co-host of “All Things Considered” at NPR, moderates their discussion. The views and opinions of the podcast guests are their own and do not necessarily reflect those of the Aspen Institute.
The Mueller report has been sitting in the Justice Department for nearly two weeks. Attorney general William Barr told Congress Wednesday he's hoping the public will finally get a look at the 300-plus page document sometime within the next week, ending a bizarre period of dissembling and fumbling by Barr that has left America with more questions than answers about the seriousness of what Mueller uncovered.
While the president's former attorney Michael Cohen made headlines testifying before Congress Wednesday, a few senior defense officials were grilled in the same building at another Congressional hearing on military issues that could affect San Diego County. A House Appropriations subcommittee called a hearing on the impact that President Donald Trump's proposed border wall project may have on military readiness, now that he has declared a state of emergency. Trump has said he wants to divert up to $8.1 billion toward the border wall, including $3.6 billion of “unobligated” funds in the military construction budget. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/military/sd-me-trump-military-projects-20190227-story.html

As I mentioned in my video blog I recorded on Friday, the jobs data that came out on Friday was just not weak enough for the market So the markets' carnage continues, because everybody still believes the Federal Reserve may in fact be raising interest rates - the only question is, will it be in March, will it be in June, the markets don't know and so they continue to be under pressure At one point today, the Dow Jones was down nearly 400 points The NASDAQ was down about another 150 intra-day We had one of these last hour rallies, just to keep hope alive so the Dow closed down just 177 points, the NASDAQ down 79 At the lows today, we were within 1% of a bear market, in the NASDAQ, so technically Wall Street can pretend they are not in a bear market, maybe for a few more days The same thing is going to happen with the recession - everybody is saying there is no recession, but eventually they will have to admit it I was reading an article by an economist from one of the bigger banks, who said, there will be some more downside, maybe the NASDAQ will go down to about 3900 But, he said, "Don't worry, it's not going to be as bad as 2000 or 2008 because the economy is in good shape and the odds of a recession are very slim." What would make him think the odds of a recession are slim? All the data is horrible. Manufacturing is already in a recession; the service sector is contracting rapidly It has been seven years since the last recession so we're overdue… The Fed is tightening, raising interest rates, as a matter of fact they've been tightening for 2 years if you understand that the "Taper Talk" was the beginning of the tightening Plus, we're in a bear market We often hear, "The market has predicted 10 of the last 5 recessions" OK, well, the Fed has predicted zero of the last 5 recessions They always say there's not going to be a recession right before there's a recession, in fact, they have a history of saying there won't be a recession when we're already in a recession What led the carnage in the stock market was the sell-off in European banks and it was brutal, in fact these big banks are lower than their lows in the depth of the Financial Crisis The big one is Deutsche Bank had to come out today and re assure everybody that they did not have a solvency problem All the U.S. stocks hit 52-week lows: Morgan Stanley hit a 52-week low, Goldman Sachs down 4-1/2% - 52-week low, Bank of America down 5-1/4% - 52-week low These stocks will continue to suffer until the Fed cries Uncle, or Aunt The ECB can't do it, the Bank of Japan can't do it - negative rates are actually making it worse for the European banks There is no more stimulus coming from Europe because the stimulus is causing a bigger problem than it is supposed to cure I've said this many times: bankers in Europe were worried about, "Lowflation" as they see weak oil prices, so now they want to stimulate But whenever they stimulate, they cause the dollar to strengthen and the stronger dollar further suppresses the commodity prices, threatening more "Lowflation" The Bank of Japan can't do anything, in fact the yen was up again today a new 52-week high for the Japanese yen, so even though Japan has gone negative the yen is rising not just to a 52-week high, this is the highest it has been since October of 2014 In Europe they are making the situation worse by easing Who's left? Janet Yellen will speak to Congress Wednesday and Thursday this week and maybe she'll throw the market a lifesaver this time instead of an anchor This is exactly what I have been saying would happen - the Fed would prick its own bubble with just a tiny .25 hole and the air has come gushing out It is the opposite in gold. Gold actually traded up to $1200/oz today before closing today above $1190 - up $18 on the day A number of gold stocks were up 15-20% interday on their highs; they surrendered some of their highs by the close,
