Ian Parmeter, Research Scholar and Middle East Expert at the ANU Centre of Arab and Islamic Studies in Canberra, says international calls for a two-state solution are unlikely to lead to results. The two-state solution for the conflict in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian territories goes back to a 1947 UN Resolution, which called for the land between Jordan and the Mediterranean to be divided into separate Israeli and Palestinian states. It had Jewish support back then, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly disagreed with US President Joe Biden, saying he does not support a separate Palestinian state after Israel ends its military campaign in Gaza. Mr Parmeter says around 500,000 Israeli settlers now living in the Occupied West Bank, areas of contention around Jerusalem and Gaza, and domestic pressure on Mr Biden and Mr Netanyahu means the solution now looks impossible. He explained its origins to SBS's Penry Buckley.
FIDF Host Lara Krinsky is joined by Geopolitical Middle East Expert, Former Israeli Intelligence Official, and Senior Arab Affairs Advisor Avi Melamed to give a full presentation on this pivotal moment in the Israel War. Mr. Melamed outlines the question of if this is heading toward a multifront war, the Iranian regime's tactics, the United States involvement in the war, the dangerous movement of the Houthis in Yemen, the way the Arab World is seeing the war and believing or refuting what is being shown through the media and propaganda, and the ultimate mission of making Hamas irrelevant. Following his presentation, Lara and Mr. Melamed address the narrative that Iran has the Arab people's best interest, the United States' relationship with the Mullah Regime, and how the daily actions of the United States shape its image and relationship with Israel. Hamas' attack on Israel has unleashed a horrific conflict. Breaking out over the weekend, Palestinians murdered Israeli civilians and are threatening to execute many hostages. Israel countered with mass aerial bombing and has cut off electricity, water and food going into the Gaza Strip. Even against the history of the conflict ridden Middle East, the atrocities we've seen are beyond appalling. The coming days are unpredictable and alarming. In this podcast, expert on the Middle East and former Australian ambassador to Lebanon Ian Parmeter joins The Conversation to analyse the conflict so far; explaining its background and ramifications.
Steven Simon, author of seven books, is currently a fellow at MIT after spending nearly 40 years specializing in the Middle East in a variety of high-level jobs both in and out of government. In his newest book, “GRAND DELUSION: The Rise and Fall of American Ambition in the Middle East,” he is both candid and clear about the gap between US policymakers' fantasy and reality in this part of the world. He calls out the enormous and terrible consequences, particularly for the people in the region caught in the crossfire. In our conversation he explains the origins of US interest in the Middle East, which president offered “The Deal of the Century” (chapters are organized by president), and what 2 countries in the region actually benefitted from the American presence. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/booktalk-diana-korte/message

The Israeli government has been in office for ten months and the next election is scheduled three and a half years from now; but the coalition is currently teetering on the brink of political abyss with the defection of its own Majority Whip, a member of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's Knesset faction. Because Israel's legislators are on recess for the next several weeks, moves to unseat Bennett are in suspended animation - but his future seems bleak, though not downright doomed. So how will the political drama unfold when the Knesset is back in session after its holiday break? Yasmin Abdel-Hak was born and raised in Denmark. Her father is Egyptian. Her mother Danish. For several generations the migratory paths on both sides of her family have stretched from the Middle East to Scandinavia, the US and Europe. In contrast, Yasmin attended a private Christian school for girls in Copenhagen. Her career as a Human Rights Law, began at the Danish Immigration Service, where she worked with asylum seekers, refugees from Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. Today, commuting between Lisbon and Copenhagen, she runs her own consultancy, Global Migration and Politics. As a consultant, researcher, and blogger on Middle East issues, she works specifically with analysis and commentaries on the politics and the power games that define the region and the economic, religious and ethnic problems of the Middle East.
