The Western Bubble
Autopsy #9 Analysing Pompeo vs Mearsheimer

The Western Bubble

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2026 48:14

In this week's Autopsy, we react to a debate from the Munk Debates in Canada, featuring Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer against Mike Pompeo and Victoria Nuland on the question of Iran. The full video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntiLygd0ihEOn paper this is a clash between academia and policy. In practice it is a demonstration of exactly how Western Bubble thinking shuts down serious analysis the moment it feels threatened.Walt and Mearsheimer do what good analysts are supposed to do: follow the evidence. The JCPOA worked. The IAEA inspectors were on the ground. Iran was not stockpiling. Iran was not, by any serious measure, this close to a nuclear weapon, despite thirty years of Western politicians insisting otherwise. The academics make these points clearly, without drama, and with data.Pompeo's response is essentially: don't trust the inspectors, don't trust the international institutions, trust me. I was Secretary of State. I had information. Iran are monsters. That is the full argument. It is the same logic that preceded the invasion of Iraq, delivered with the same confidence, by someone who has apparently learned nothing from that episode. What makes the debate particularly revealing is the moment Nuland effectively ends the conversation by saying "there you go" when Walt and Mearsheimer decline to describe Iran as a monster. That two words. In those two words you see the entire problem with Western foreign policy thinking: the moment someone refuses to accept the good versus evil frame, they become an invalid conversational partner. Not wrong, not misguided, simply irrelevant. We also discuss what the debate says about the difference between policy and academia, why Iran's weapons development makes considerably more rational sense than Pompeo wants to admit, and why North Korea's survival as a state tells you everything you need to know about the real incentive structure around nuclear weapons. This podcast is an individual project between us, Dario Hasenstab and Balder Hageraats. We are supported by our producer Stefani Obradovic from Western Bubble Insights & Strategy. If you would like to get in touch with us, write us an email at thewesternbubble@gmail.com.

Memorial Day brings out a lot of scripted lines, but we want to talk about the part that gets avoided: what American wars actually cost, who pays, and how often the public is left holding the bill while elites chase ideology, influence, and profit. We start by looking at the human consequences for service members and veterans, and why so many deployments overseas end with the same problems still on the table, just with more graves and more resentment. Then we shift into the biggest moving story right now: Iran negotiations, the Iran nuclear program, and why the phrase “on the brink of a deal” can be more propaganda than reality. We break down uranium enrichment in plain language, what the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty allows, and why demanding “zero enrichment” is not a technical detail but a deal-killer. We also explain how Lebanon and Hezbollah change the endgame, why escalations in southern Lebanon can function as sabotage, and how the Strait of Hormuz becomes real leverage that reshapes every calculation. We also react to Trump's messaging, including his push to fold Iran into the Abraham Accords, what those normalization deals have meant in practice, and how they can drive an arms race while adding impossible complexity to already fragile diplomacy. Along the way, we play and respond to clips featuring Cory Booker, plus a debate moment where Mearsheimer and Walt confront Pompeo and Nuland's talking points, and we close with a quick look at Thomas Massie signaling a possible national run.

The Gulf Crisis – Two Theories of American Decline

There are roughly two camps. One argues that there is an overarching grand plan behind America's actions in Venezuela, Iran, Greenland, and against Russia's shadow fleet – a coherent strategy to choke off China's industries and make Europe energy-dependent on the United States. The other, more plausible camp sees imperial decline and the chaos that decline inevitably brings.I explore both.John Mearsheimer argues that America has suffered a catastrophic defeat. The evidence is stark: Iran has published a ten-point plan that includes the removal of American bases from the Gulf, continued uranium enrichment, and reparations – and Trump accepted it as the basis for negotiations. America is running out of Tomahawk missiles, having burned through eight to ten years of stockpiles in weeks. Its capital ships have been withdrawn out of Iranian missile range. The world's key strategic waterway is no longer under US control. But journalist Richard Medhurst makes a compelling case that this is all about China – a brutal attempt to cut off Chinese industry from Persian Gulf oil and force Beijing to negotiate from weakness. The problem is Trump. According to the New York Times, he went into this war on a whim – a "yeah, sounds good" after Netanyahu's sales pitch – overruling his own generals. The White House has been systematically de‑professionalised. Institutional memory is gone. Decision‑making is chaos.I draw a careful parallel with Hitler's regime: the removal of experts, the promotion of sycophants like Ribbentrop, the deliberate creation of administrative chaos to concentrate power. Trump surrounds himself with the same kind of people – Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff – who tell him what he wants to hear. From Tehran, this looks like a once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity: remove the Americans from the Gulf forever, gain permanent leverage over the world, and finally deal with the threat of Israel. And Israel's standing in America has plummeted – not just among Democrats, but among the MAGA base as well. What we are witnessing is the end of a world order that began in 1991. Trump is not the cause of American decline – he is an accelerant. But the collapse is coming, and the consequences will be catastrophic.Topics covered:- Mearsheimer's thesis of strategic defeat- America's munitions crisis- Medhurst's blockade‑of‑China argument- Trump's chaotic, whim‑driven decision‑making- The de‑professionalisation of the White House- Hitler, Ribbentrop, and the parallel of sycophantic advice- Iran's once‑in‑a‑lifetime opportunity- Israel's collapsing popularity in the US- The end of the post‑Cold War order---*If you enjoy the podcast, please consider supporting us. The greatest threat to stability in the Middle East is not Iran, but “the US working closely together with Israel”, argues United States political scientist John Mearsheimer. Mearsheimer tells host Steve Clemons that the notion that the US and Israel are making a safer, more stable Middle East is “ludicrous”. And the idea that Iran is “the great destabiliser” in the region is “a myth that the US and Israel purvey”. After US President Donald Trump insisted that “We have all the cards; they have none”, Mearsheimer says the exact opposite is true - “and that's why we are in desperate straits”. In a heated debate, Robert Pape argues that the current Iran crisis is not just about bombs, deterrence, or regime change. It is about an escalation trap. In this interview, Pape says there is no military solution to stopping Iran from eventually getting a nuclear weapon. He rejects the idea that bombing alone can topple the regime, dismisses hopes that outside pressure will trigger collapse from within, and argues that the only remaining path is diplomatic. His most controversial claim comes late in the conversation: if the United States wants diplomacy to have any chance, Washington may need to “contain” Israel by preventing further escalation. The debate turns on several hard questions: Can bombing actually work? Is the Iranian regime more fragile than Pape thinks? Is Trump driven mainly by MAGA domestic politics rather than an Israel lobby framework? And if military pressure cannot solve the problem, what leverage does America really have left? Almost 20 years ago, Professor John Mearsheimer published a paper and later a book called ‘The Israel Lobby & US Foreign Policy.' It's now considered to be a seminal text on the outsized impact of lobbyists and think-tanks who skew US foreign policy in Israel's national interest and not their own. Mearsheimer and his co-author were - unusually for two unassuming academics - hit with a barrage of negative media stories and accusations of antisemitism. And leaked emails now show that one of the people colluding over these talking points to discredit John Mearsheimer was, along with his lawyer Alan Dershowitz, none other than Jeffrey Epstein. The question, of course, is why? Piers Morgan speaks to John Mearsheimer, before being joined by Alan Dershowitz. In this episode of "Gaza & the World" JWE President Helena Cobban's guest was  Prof. John Mearsheimer, the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, and the co-author with Stephen Walt of the groundbreaking 2007 book The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy. This conversation took place less than 24 hours after the November 17 passage by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2803, by which the Security Council threw its full support behind the whole of the (very controversial) 20-point "Peace Plan" for Gaza that Pres. Trump had unveiled September 29.In this wide-ranging conversation, Ms. Cobban and Prof. Mearsheimer explored the impact that Seceurity Council might have, both on developments in Gaza and the rest of West Asia and on the standing of the UN itself going forward. The two  discussed the details of how the "Israel Lobby" has functioned over the years and the serious impact it currently has on essential aspects of the free-speech situation in the United States. The conversation ended with more discussion of the changing shape of the global order, which Prof. Mearsheimer describes as having been a multipolar one "since 2017."See the multimedia records of all the conversation s conducted in the "Gaza & the World" project, here.Support the show

Democracy's Dangerous Flirtation with Autocracy: Michael McFaul on America's Abdication of Global Leadership

Keen On Democracy

A former US ambassador to Russia warns of America's slide into autocracyAs American ambassador in Moscow between 2012 and 2014, Michael McFaul had a front row seat on Russia's slide into autocracy. But in his new book, Autocrats vs Democrats, McFaul warns that it's not just Putin, but also Xi and Trump who are fueling the “new global disorder”. And the intended audience for his jeremiad against autocracy is, of course, in the United States, rather than China or Russia. McFaul, who now teaches at Stanford, is warning about democracy's dangerous flirtation with autocracy, especially in the United States. The parallels are chilling. Putin used the law to target enemies, reorganized property rights to silence independent media, and cultivated a patrimonial relationship with supporters who saw him as their protector. Trump, McFaul argues, is following a similar playbook—though America's deeper democratic traditions and more autonomous institutions provide stronger resistance. Yet McFaul sees cause for alarm in Trump's rapid moves to “bulldoze” democratic norms, from weaponizing the Justice Department to attacking press freedom. The question, for Michael McFaul, isn't if America could slide into autocracy, but whether its citizens will recognize the threat before the current flirtation is consummated. 1. Democratic Expansion, Not NATO, Turned Putin Against the West McFaul demolishes the Mearsheimer thesis that NATO expansion provoked Putin. As ambassador, he was in every meeting with Putin and Medvedev for five years—NATO simply wasn't a major issue. What terrified Putin were democratic revolutions: Serbia 2000, Georgia 2003, Ukraine's Orange Revolution 2004, and especially the 2011 protests when a quarter million Russians demanded reform in Moscow. Putin blamed the CIA and saw American-style democracy as an existential threat to his autocratic rule.2. Trump Is Following Putin's Autocratic Playbook—With One Crucial Difference Like Putin, Trump weaponizes the Justice Department against enemies, attacks independent media through property rights reorganization, and moves fast to “bulldoze” democratic norms (making reconstruction nearly impossible). But America has what Russia lacked: deeper democratic traditions going back centuries, autonomous state governments, genuinely independent media, and even a functioning opposition party. McFaul notes Trump's failures—unable to silence critics like Kimmel—suggest democratic antibodies still work, though the threat remains real.3. Xi's Slow Game Is More Dangerous Than Putin's Imperial Aggression Putin exports illiberal nationalism, seeking ideological allies in Europe and America who share his contempt for liberal “decadence.” Xi plays differently: he's not trying to destroy the liberal international order but to increase Chinese power within it while building parallel structures (BRICS, Shanghai Cooperation Organization) where China serves as anchor for an autocratic world. McFaul warns this evolutionary approach may prove more dangerous precisely because it's less visible than Putin's tanks rolling into Ukraine.4. America's Fatal Post-Cold War Mistake: We Stopped Selling Democracy to Americans The West assumed democracy was inevitable after 1991 and stopped doing the hard work. Political elites in both parties said “we got this” and stopped explaining to middle America why global engagement, free trade, and democracy promotion serve national interests. This created a vacuum Trump filled with isolationism. McFaul argues the book is written not for Cambridge and Palo Alto, but for the entire country—an attempt to restart that abandoned conversation.5. The Choice: Lead the Free World Collectively or Watch Dictators Dominate America will never regain the hegemonic power it held after World War II, and attempting unilateral dominance risks dangerous overreach that pushes wavering democracies toward China. But if democracies unite, they collectively have more economic and military power than China and its autocratic allies. The alternative to collective democratic leadership isn't Chinese hegemony—it's anarchic disorder where the powerful do what they can, a return to the chaotic map of European history where borders constantly shifted and weak states got swallowed. If democracies fail to organize, dictators will dominate the 21st century.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. In the aftermath of an Israeli attack on Qatar targeting the leadership of Hamas, American political scientist John Mearsheimer argues, “The Israelis are interested in making sure there are no negotiations that settle the conflict in Gaza.” Mearsheimer tells host Steve Clemons that the United States and Israel “basically act as a tag team”, and despite a mild rebuke by President Donald Trump, “the US supports Israel unconditionally”. UnHerd's Freddie Sayers brings together two starkly opposed voices on the Ukraine war and the future of world order: John Mearsheimer, University of Chicago professor and leading realist, and Matthew Syed, Sunday Times columnist, broadcaster and author.Mearsheimer has long argued that NATO expansion and Western policy blunders set the stage for Putin's invasion of Ukraine. From a realist standpoint, he warns that Russia's position is essentially non-negotiable and that Ukraine must cut a deal now if it is to avoid further devastation. For Mearsheimer, ignoring the hard facts of great-power politics and clinging to Western rhetoric risks only catastrophic escalation.Syed sees things very differently. In a recent Sunday Times column, he criticised the West's handling of Ukraine, from the failed Alaska summit. He accused Western governments of failing Ukraine and directly attacked Mearsheimer's realist position as “morally deranged” and fatally weak. For Syed, only moral clarity and Western resolve — not accommodation with Putin — can change the course of the war.In this debate, Freddie Sayers asks: Is realism just disguised defeatism? Is idealism dangerously naïve in the age of Trump, Putin and Xi? And, after the White House summit with Zelensky, does the West finally have a coherent strategy — or is Ukraine still being left to fight alone? Hosted on Acast. In this episode, host Alex Sachon critically examines key points made by US foreign policy expert John Mearsheimer in his recent interview with Tucker Carlson. This interview focuses partly on the current situation in Gaza and partly on the perplexing nature of the US-Israel relationship. While Alex appreciates Mearsheimer's detailed historical analysis of Israel's motivations for its policies toward Gaza and his deep knowledge of the U.S.-Israel "special relationship", he fundamentally disagrees with Mearsheimer's nation-state-centric approach and his emphasis on ideology as the main driver of U.S. foreign policy. Instead, Alex argues that only by understanding the U.S. as a global empire—driven by control, centralization, and technological dominance—can we make sense of its actions in the Middle East. The discussion highlights both the strengths and limitations of Mearsheimer's perspective, offering a broader framework for understanding current events.Table of Contents00:00 – Introduction: Framing the Debate03:32 – Clip 1: The U.S. Foreign Policy EstablishmentAlex critiques Mearsheimer's focus on ideology and the nation-state, arguing for a broader model that distinguishes between America as a nation-state and as a global empire.04:34 – Clip 2: The U.S.-Israel RelationshipMearsheimer discusses the influence of the Israel lobby and U.S. military support. Alex agrees with the factual analysis at the nation-state level but insists the real driver is the empire's need for control, not just lobbying or ideology.08:33 – Clip 3: The Two-State SolutionMearsheimer claims the U.S. wants peace and a two-state solution. Alex strongly disagrees, arguing that ongoing conflict serves U.S. imperial interests, especially regarding the petrodollar system.10:24 – Clip 4: The Greater Israel Project and Ethnic CleansingMearsheimer details the historical roots and current execution of the Greater Israel agenda.

Graham E. Fuller specializes in long-range forecasting of geopolitics. In fact, Fuller is a former vice chair of the National Intelligence Council at CIA responsible for long-term forecasting. He also served as a CIA operations officer overseas for two decades, with much of his time being spent in the Middle East. He served as the CIA Station Chief in Kabul and is the author of such books as A World Without Islam (2010) and The Future of Political Islam (2003). He is a noted analyst on Islamist movements and continues to write extensively on issues pertaining to U.S. foreign policy, the Middle East, and geopolitics. Graham joined me for a conversation about Assad's overthrow and what it means for various geopolitical players including the U.S. Russia, Iran, Turkey, and the Gulf states. We ended up having a more broad discussion that led into many different areas including: - Explaining the phenomena that has come to be known as "Political Islam" sans the tabloid clickbait that has unfortunately something attended the non-academic literature on the topic - Graham's critique of John Mearsheimer's Realist school of thought in regards to international relations. Graham believes there is great value in Mearsheimer's analysis, but makes the case that Realism as a school of thought is too often mechanistic and deterministic in how it perceives the course of geopolitical trends - The U.S.'s endless "Search for Enemies" and the consequences that approach to foreign policy creates, in relation to, for example, the U.S.-China relationship - The question of HTS and its leader Abu Muhammed al-Jolani; how will the govern?; HTS's administration of Idlib; how al-Jolani is, in the immediate, approaching the West and Israel - Israel and Turkey's strikes in Syria; Turkey's geopolitical concerns over the Kurds in Syria; the far-right elements that have been unleashed in Israel, especially since the October 7th, 2023 attack and how that effects both Israel and the Middle East more broadly - And much, much more!

Robert Brenner begins with the theory of imperialism from before WWI through the post-war period and up to the present, essentially arguing that in the present period of American hegemony, imperialism is the weapon of weaker powers. Ilya Matveev follows by examining three theorists of imperialism—Lenin, Schumpeter, and Mearsheimer—and looks at the Russian case through the lens of their different theories. Hanna Perekhoda, originally from Donetsk in the contested Donbas region, examines Putin's view of Ukraine as a creation by Russia's enemies. According to Putin, Lenin's support of the self-determination of Ukraine divided Russia, preventing it from becoming a leading power in the world. For proponents of this view, Russian sovereignty is under threat so long as Ukraine exists.Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements. Renowned University of Chicago Professor of Political Science John Mearsheimer has given a “gloomy” analysis about Israel's standing, saying that the Middle Eastern nation's problems are “deep, unfixable” and getting worse.   Mearsheimer made his comment during an interview with Judge Napolitano, saying that ten months into its ruthless war against the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, the Israeli army is worn out, yet it has not defeated Palestinian resistance fighters in Hamas. “Israel is stuck in Gaza,” said the professor. It's a hornet's nest from which it had to leave in 2005, he pointed out, adding that Israel simply cannot comprehend that the catastrophic destruction and unresolved problems it has caused in Gaza lie on its border, and also has no hope of defeating Hezbollah in Lebanon or Iran.   Plus segments on a top Israeli official lamenting that his country can't starve two million Palestinians to death, Kamala Harris's VP choice Tim Walz explaining that free speech doesn't allow for misinformation or hate speech, NFL teams using facial recognition to scan game ticketholders and the latest Kamala Harris word salad.   Also featuring Stef Zamorano, Kurt Metzger and Mike MacRae. And since he's been largely excluded from corporate media for his dissenting views, it's more important than ever to get his word out. “What you have here is a real disjuncture between what the elites think and what the publics think,” he says of the two conflicts, in what is already a clear affront to the narratives of elitist western media. “There are recent polls produced by the European Council on Foreign Relations and the Quincy Institute that show that only 10% of Europeans and 12% of Americans think that Ukraine can win the war.” And when it comes to Israel, Mearsheimer explains that US policy is even further from what the people want. It's not the voters who have a say, and even Congress (as pro-Israel as they are) isn't in control: “I believe that 90% of it is accounted for by the [Israel] lobby.” Professor Mearsheimer deep dives into each war: he explains why the US tanked Ukraine's peace talks to further instigate Russia and what he would do now if he was in Biden's or Putin's position. He also delves into the influence of the Israel lobby and how Biden has given impunity to Israel's killing Gaza killing spree. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
