There are significant material, energy, labour and carbon savings to be made by reusing, rather than remaking, a product. How does this work in business? The circular economy is often wrongly characterised as a tech solution, or a solution for tech, but it's about much more than that.As we heard in episode 97, there are two cycles: the technical and biological one. In this episode, we're exploring the latter.Colin Webster from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation talks to farmer and soil advocate Abby Rose, and Gero Leson, Vice President of Special Operations at Dr. Bronner's, to hear about the benefits and practicalities of agriculture in a circular economy.--Useful links:Find out more about food and the circular economyCheck out Abby Rose's podcast FarmeramaLearn more about Dr Bronner's work with farmersDiscover more about the biological and technical cycles Listen to all episodes of the Circular Economy Show PodcastVisit the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's website
What do you do when something you own, say a toaster, breaks? You've usually got two options: fix it, or replace it. It often feels like replacing an item is easier than repairing it, and the most cost-effective solution. But in a circular economy, we want goods and materials to stay in circulation at high value for as long as possible. So how does that work in reality? In this new series, Colin Webster from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation explores individual elements of the circular economy. In this episode, he's joined by Dr Conny Bakker, Professor of Design Methodology for Sustainability and Circular Economy at TU Delft, and Josephine Philips, the founder and CEO of Sojo, a UK-based third party clothing repair service, to discuss the role of repair.--Useful links:Learn more about the EU's Right to Repair legislation Find out more about Conny Bakker's workDiscover more about SojoRead more about how circulating products and materials contributes to a circular economyListen to all episodes of the Circular Economy Show PodcastVisit the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's website
Sometimes the concept of a circular economy seems so large that it's difficult to get to grips with it. It's never about one thing. It's about a million things at once. We're back next week with a new look, and a new series!Over the next four episodes, Colin Webster from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's learning team helps break the concept down into smaller chunks. He'll speak to experts from the fields of repair, agriculture, open source, and reuse to find out how they relate to the circular economy.Subscribe or follow The Circular Economy Show Podcast so you never miss an episode.

Colin Webster (designer) and Rachel Codd (graphics & illustration) of Counter Attack: The Football Strategy Game, spoke to Inside the Beautiful Game. Counter Attack is a football strategy game which lasts for 90 minutes. The two players or managers each control a team of 11 players. Every player has a unique set of skills that the managers try to best utilise during play. Managers control how the players move, pass, dribble, tackle and shoot. Duels between players on the pitch - whether tackles, shots or headers - are determined by a combination of the unique player skills plus a dice roll. During movement phases, a sand timer is used to keep the pace of the game up. Counter Attack features everything you'd expect in a game of football, from corners to free kicks, penalties to red cards and injuries. This episode of Inside the Beautiful Game was recorded on April 17, 2020. It is unlikely that extra-mural activities at schools will continue this year as most schools will be focussing on completing academic work. eSports is a great alternative to in-person events as it automatically adheres to social distancing conventions and allows learners to still engage socially on platforms that they are already comfortable with. During this episode I talk to a board member of the International Esports Federation (IESF), and general secretary of Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA), Colin Webster about how you can start an eSports club at your school
Soccerlit’s Mitchell Petit-Frere spoke with Colin Webster about Counter Attack, the soccer strategy board game. Colin delved into his love of soccer games and how that passion influenced Counter Attack, as well as the intricacies of bringing a board game to life.

In public discussion, the circular economy is often described as a way to allow technical products and their components to be used as endlessly as possible. But we can’t forget about the biological cycle – how does it work when we come to the system that sustains life: agriculture? In this episode, Hunter Lovins argues that we need a ‘circular economy of the soil’ to feed a growing population, restore soil quality and ultimately reconcile farming systems with natural cycles. L. Hunter Lovins is President of Natural Capitalism Solutions (NCS) and is co-author of Natural Capitalism: The Next Industrial Revolution. Hunter LovinsThis podcast series presented by Colin Webster explores the recently published book A New Dynamic 2: Effective systems in a circular economy.

The pattern in which cities have grown is predictable across the world, and it’s based on the economic relationship between the centre and the edge. There are some clues that this pattern is changing, driven by advanced information technology. But what may happen to the city if we develop regenerative activities by internalising energy and material flows? In this episode Michael Batty elaborates on the future developments of cities.
