Georgie Codd is a writer of all-sorts. She's dabbled in fiction, written for publications, created the 'BookBound' literary festival, and now focuses on narrative non-fiction.Her first book, 'We Swim to the Shark', came out in 2020, and followed Georgie's quest to overcome her deepest fears by crossing the planet, learning to scuba dive, and attempting to swim with the largest fish in the world: an adult whale shark. She's followed it up with 'Never Had a Dad', which sees Georgie advertise for a father figure. It was inspired by a strange meeting with an older man on holiday with her mum. We talk about how she expanded on that idea, and how much she can plan and plot an adventure memoir. You can hear about the differences in the process of fiction and narrative non-fiction, and how she decides what her next adventure should be. We chat about how she makes a reader care, being trained to write prose fiction, and how she works on the go whilst being easily distracted.Get a copy of the book - uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineThis week's podcast is sponsored by 'Whale Cemetery: Murder On A Smuggler's Tide', the new book in the 'DCI Finnegan Yorkshire Crime Thriller' series by Ely North. December Codd's World was a mix of guests, holiday music, and a bit from radio archives in 1947 by the comedy team, Burns and Allen, about shopping for the perfect gift. Guests included: Andy Bathemess from Wabi Sabi and Isobel Lindsay from Grand County 4-H. Ella Fiztgerald's musical portion was deleted after airing. Andy Bathemess (3:15) came on the show to discuss the Wabi Sabi Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner which was held at the Grand Center on Thanksgiving Day. Andy, a member of the Wabi Sabi Board of Directors, said over 900 meals were served at the dinner! He noted over 700 guests had dinner at the Center. Almost 100 volunteers helped set up, cook, serve, and cleanup following the dinner! Wabi Sabi along with several corporate sponsors provide the dinner free to all attendees. The dinner has become a celebrated tradition in Moab. Isobel Lindsay (9:23) joined the show to talk about Grand County 4-H and its upcoming holiday event, Posada. Posada's roots are Hispanic; it is primarily observed in Mexico and other countries. Ms. Lindsay said the event, which runs for nine nights, commemorates Mary and Joseph's nine-day journey to Bethlehem. Codd and Lindsay also discussed the benefits of 4-H in Grand County and talked about ways to get more people involved in the program. Burns and Allen Radio Show (24:25) The final segment of Codd's World featured a rebroadcast from the Burns and Allen from December 1947. Burns and Allen were two of the most popular characters on the radio beginning in 1934. They worked together in vaudeville, film, radio, and television for over 40 years! In the spirit of the season, Codd played a clip titled “Gracie's Last Minute Christmas Gift” which aired on December 18, 1947. The show follows George as he tries to decipher Gracie's hints regarding the gift she wants Geroge to get her for Christmas. Nothing goes easily for George as he scrambles around New York City trying to figure out just what he's supposed to buy for Gracie!

The guests on this show included Toni Sicola and Theresa Herd from the Moab Women's Festival and Liam O'Hare, a member of the Scottish band “Definitely Oasis.” First up were the organizers of the second Moab Women's Festival: Decompress Fest 2025. The event took place on September 13-14, 2025. This year's festival included ten different activities including off road driving, meditation and breathing techniques, yoga, and other stress reduction tools. The festival raised funds for WBC/Utah and Seekhaven Family Crisis & Resource Center in Moab. Next up was (33:27) Mr. Liam O'Hare who is the drummer for the Scotland based Oasis tribute band, “Definitely Oasis.” O'Hare has been with the band for about 7 years. They play gigs throughout Scotland and the UK as well Europe. Liam talks about the popularity of tribute bans in general and their role in presenting live music at affordable prices. He also discussed how busy they are now that Oasis is touring again. “Definitely Oasis” is one of about 37 Oasis cover bands in the UK. “DO” is considered by fans to be one of the best tribute bands in Scotland. This episode of Codd's World features three guests. Dan Lamont, Director of the Moab Celtic Festival: Scots on the Rocks, Dave Wardell, from Kilberry Bagpipes, and Maggie McGuire, Editor/ Publisher of the Moab Sun. This show took place during the Fall Radiothon for KZMU. Dan Lamont was the first guest. He discussed the history of the Scots on the Rocks/ Moab Celtic Festival and what was lined up for the 2025 event. The festival is scheduled for October 17-19, 2025 at the City Ballfields on Center Street in Moab. Lamont noted that there would be a Tattoo of Bagpipe Bands attending the festival, athletic events, Clan tents, food and various clothing and souvenir booths. The Tattoo is an event where each bagpipe band marches on the field and plays a few songs for the gathered audience. Lamont said this is the 9th year for the festival. He also noted that the festival has grown in recent years, and they hoped to continue the event in Moab for years to come. In an interview recorded in July 2025, Dave Wardell from Kilberry Bagpipe makers from Edinburgh, Scotland, discussed the history of the bagpipes and how they are made. Dave was a master bagpipe player with national awards for his playing, who was now making bagpipes for one of the premier bagpipe makers in the United Kingdom. Dave discussed the materials used in the construction of the instrument and how they have changed over the centuries. Most bagpipes today are made with rubber air bladders that produce the air that goes through the drones that create the unique sound of the pipes. Bagpipes can be traced back to the early 15th century in Scotland. It is believed that a type of bagpipe has been around for a few thousand years. Mr. Wardell said it takes about two full days to complete a bagpipe. They cost around 1,000 pounds ($1,250 US) for a basic instrument and run well into thousands of dollars for fancier instruments with extensive decorations and more expensive materials. He also noted that the demand for bagpipes has grown significantly around the world over the past several decades. Interestingly, there is increased demand for bagpipes made with leather air bladders! Since “Codd's World!” was during Radiothon, Maggie McGuire, Owner and Publisher of the Moab Sun News, joined the show to talk about the importance of local public radio and local newspapers.

One of FourIn my so-called career, I've known four geniuses: one evil, one chaos made flesh, and two nice; Dan is in the last group. There are many theories around what makes someone a genius; I define it as the ability to make connections where others cannot see them. Dan is professionally (at least in EPMland) best known for his deconstruction of ASO Essbase, understanding its architecture and fundamentals, and how to optimise it.If you were in his "Essbase ASO Performance: When NOT to Depend on MDX" session at Kscope 2010, you know just what I'm talking aboutI was sort of slack jawed by the end of the presentation. How on earth did he figure this out? BSO Essbase's architecture was (and is) fully documented. Thank Arbor Software. The same was (and still is) not true for ASO Essbase. Thank (or don't) Hyperion Solutions.Dan took apart ASO Essbase, hypothesising, testing, rejecting, confirming, and simply intellectually beating the product halfway to death to mirror Codd's 12 rules for OLAP. His work revolutionized (and made my life considerably easier amongst many others) ASO Essbase theory and practice. If you weren't there and you practice Essbase, you probably have a copy of Developing Essbase Applications: Advanced Techniques for Finance and IT Professionals. You can still (it came out in 2012!) buy it here on Amazon. One day Oracle will change the architecture behind ASO Essbase (maybe this has already happened – I'm out of that space now), but until then, and maybe even in future if they mimic the way ASO works/worked, Dan's chapter is the place to be.Listen to the podcast and hear how Dan did it and of course more back story of a fascinating man in an equally fascinating industry across time.Part 1 of 2In editing (and yes, I did it this time round and yes, I'm not very good at it as you'll hear glitches in the recording – sorry) an episode, there's always a temptation to cut content to fit an hour long format for brevity. However, EPM Conversations is about, well, conversations and if you were sitting in a coffee shop with Dan, you'd want to know a bit about his personal life – that's more in the second part although you'll get a good feel for him in this episode as well.Be seeing you.

Research is telling us is that hybrid working is something most employees want, it does increase our productivity because we don't have to commute, and most companies are likely to keep it in place, but it comes at a cost. We need to be aware of these costs so we can manage them. Hybrid working does increase stress, loneliness, isolation, and disengagement. In many ways it is culture eroding. That doesn't mean we get rid of hybrid working. I believe it is here to stay. Rather it means we need to be aware of these challenges so we can take action to solve them. The consulting firm Deloitte has for the second year released its Women @ Work 2022: A Global Outlook report, a survey of 5,000 women across 10 countries The survey provides a unique glimpse into the lives of women in the workplace amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The responses from around the globe made it clear that women's “everyday” workplace experiences were having a detrimental impact on their engagement and that the pandemic was having a severe impact on women's lives and careers, including their work/life balance and wellbeing. Emma Codd, Global Inclusion Leader for Deloitte joins me on the podcast today to discuss the report's findings in more detail. We discuss the issues women face with hybrid working, flexible working and overcoming the barriers to their advancement at work. Emma states that women that work in a hybrid manner which was around half of the respondents that can work in a hybrid way, of those respondents, 60% said they'd experienced exclusion in the past year. Around 50% said they weren't getting the access they needed to leaders which we all know how important sponsorship is for anybody that is in an underrepresented group is so important. Suddenly that's not there anymore. Emma states there are four questions every organization globally should be asking; often only needing tweaks to resolve the outcome, but still action taking place: Question One: Does your culture allow employees to feel safe when asking for flexible working? If not, how can it change? Question Two: Do all employees feel connected? If not, why not? Question Three: Do all employees belong? Why do employees feel isolated? Question Four: Does each employee have equal access to support? How can this access improve? Deloitte Women @ Work 2022 Survey Emma Codd
We've approach the beast itself: SQL. Or, as it used to be known, SEQUEL. In this episode we will discuss how early navigational databases failed, and how we were able to move past them into a relational future. It's a fascinating tale about how careful research and planning can lead to much better tools.
