Luke 9:11-17 - Jesus Feeds the Multitude

Before we look at Luke 9 and Jesus feeding the multitude, I again want to ask for your prayers as next week I will be leaving for a Southeast Asian country with a multitude of people (over 1 billion), that are desperately hungry for the Word of God and need to be feed! I will be spending time with a national leader there who works with over 600 plus pastors. It is my goal and prayer to connect each of these pastors to a prayer partner here in the states that will take him into their heart and regularly intercede on his behalf.   Would you be willing to join me in this great ministry of prayer so that the multitudes in this Asian country can be feed the Truth of God's Word? Let me know by sending me an email at: pastormike@pmiministries.org Also if you would like to financially support this great opportunity, please go to my website: https://www.pmiministries.org/ Under the donate button you will see a place there to do that! Thanks in advance for all your prayers and support!   Now in Luke 9:11-17, we see that our Lord was not the kind of person who could teach the Word and then say to hungry people, "Depart in peace, be ye warm and filled" (James 2:16). The disciples were only too eager to see the crowd leave (Luke 18:15; see Matt. 15:23). They had not yet caught the compassion of Christ and the burden He had for the multitudes, but one day they would.   When you combine all four accounts of this miracle (Matthew 14:16-21; Mark 6:33-44; Luke 9:11-17; John 6:5-14), you find that Jesus first asked Philip where they could buy enough bread to feed such a great crowd. It is possible that this crowd was around 15,000 plus people with the women and children. Jesus was only testing Philip, "for He Himself knew what He was intending to do" (John 6:6). In the crisis hours of life, when your resources are low and your responsibilities are great, it is good to remember that God already has the problem solved.   Jesus started with what they had, a few loaves and fishes that were generously donated by a lad found by Andrew (John 6:8-9). Did Andrew know the boy? Or did the boy offer his little lunch without being asked? Before we ask God to do the impossible, let's start with the possible and give Him what we have. And while we are at it, let's give thanks for mothers who give their sons something to give to Jesus.   The Lord looked up to heaven, the source of our daily bread (Matt. 6:11), gave thanks, and blessed the food; and then He multiplied the few loaves and fishes. Jesus was the "producer" and His disciples were the "distributors." The amazing thing is that everybody was served and satisfied, and there were twelve baskets of leftovers, one for each of the disciples. Jesus takes good care of His servants.   This miracle was more than an act of mercy for hungry people, though that was important. It was also a sign of our Lord's messiahship and an illustration of God's gracious provision for man's salvation. The next day, Jesus preached a sermon on "The Bread of Life" and urged the people to receive Him just as they had received the bread (John 6:22-59). But the people were more interested in their stomachs than their souls, and completely missed the spiritual impact of the miracle. Their desire was to make Jesus King so He could give them bread for the rest of their lives! (John 6:14-15)   After Jesus returned to heaven, the disciples must often have been encouraged by remembering this miracle. We can learn many lessons from this miracle ourselves. It teaches us to have compassion, to look on problems as opportunities for God to work, and to give Him all that we have and trust Him to meet the needs. If we do all we can, He will step in and do the rest. Corrie Ten Boom said, "Let God's promises shine on your problems”.   Today, that is good counsel for us too.   God bless!

Tuesday, 29 October 2024   And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Matthew 4:18   “And Jesus, walking beside the Sea of the Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea - for they were fishers” (CG).   In the previous verse, it noted that Jesus began to preach, telling the people to reconsider because the kingdom of the heavens was at hand. With that noted, it next says, “And Jesus.”   The name of Jesus is not included in all of the ancient texts. Some believe it was inadvertently dropped out while others argue it was inadvertently added in or that it was inserted for clarity. As the subject has not changed, it is understood either way. Next, it says He was “walking beside the Sea of the Galilee.”   As noted before, the Galilee is a somewhat circular region. This sea is within that region. Thus, the use of the article before “Galilee” is appropriate. If there were a large body of water like this in the area of the Grand Canyon, we would call it “the sea of the Grand Canyon.”   Jesus was in the area conducting His ministry when “He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother.”   The name Simon equates to the Hebrew name Shimon. That comes from shama, to hear. Thus, it means something like Hearing or He Who Hears. Peter comes from petros, a small stone. Thus, the name means Stone or Rock. The name Andrew comes from the Greek word aner, a man, and thus it means something like Manly, Courageous, or Brave.   Although they are introduced into the narrative now, and it appears that the calling that lies ahead is almost sudden and out of the blue, this is hardly the case. By comparing the narrative found in John's gospel, these two are already well known to Jesus.   They were with John the Baptist in the area of Bethabara (John 1:28), John had proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God (John 1:29), one of John's disciples was Andrew (John 1:40), and they had come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah. When Andrew introduced Simon to Jesus, Jesus then named Simon Cephas which is Peter, the Rock (John 1:42).   From there, they went together to Cana in Galilee (John 2:1). This fills in some of the background information that the synoptic gospels skip over. Therefore, the abruptness of this account is actually smoothed out when the fuller picture is seen. As for Matthew's words, it says that these two were “casting a net into the sea.”   Here is a word found only this once in Scripture in some manuscripts, or it is found one more time (Mark 1:16) in other manuscripts, amphiblestron. It is derived from amphoteroi, both, and ballo, to cast. Vincent's Word Studies provides an explanation –   “...the casting-net, which, being cast over the shoulder, spreads into a circle (ἀμφὶ [amphi – both sides and thus “all around”]). The word is sometimes used by classical Greek writers to denote a garment which encompasses the wearer. In Matthew 4:20, the word net again occurs, but representing a different Greek word (δίκτυον [diktuon]) which is the general name for all kinds of nets, whether for taking fish or fowl. Still another word occurs at Matthew 13:47, σαγήνη [sagene], the draw-net.”   These two were out tending to work when Jesus decided to formally call them into a new profession, one which would change the course of their lives and, indeed, the entire world as well as the entirety of human history. As for the reason they were casting this net, Matthew next says, “for they were fishers.”   Many translations say “fishermen.” This is technically correct because the word is in the masculine, speaking of the men. But for precision in translation, saying “fishers” avoids a problem that then appears in the next verse.   The word is halieus, coming from hals, salt. Thus, it would be used like the modern descriptor of a sailor, such as, “He is an old salt.” The meaning is that he has been a sailor for a long time. Even though the Sea of the Galilee is not a salt sea, the thought carries over to any in such a profession.   Life application: It is good to be well-versed in all four gospels before coming to conclusions about various events that take place. As noted in a previous commentary, having all of what is said in the four gospels lined up chronologically really helps to see what is going on.   From there, the life and ministry of Jesus and those with Him seem less abrupt. There is nothing like a rushed or forced narrative actually going on. However, each writer is providing information relevant to his purpose for writing. By giving information in a completely different style than the synoptic gospels, John's gospel changes the entire focus of what is being said and who it is being directed to.   Jesus, in the Synoptics, is being focused on as the Messiah of Israel who would come and fulfill the law. His words are directed to Israel under the law, even if some of what He says is in anticipation of the future, either for the church or for Israel in the millennium.   John, on the other hand, is addressing matters that speak of Jesus in a completely different way. Jesus is presented as the Christ of all people who is completing His mission in order to bring in a new spiritual realm for all people to join in. The words carry truths that are not limited to the Messiah's interactions with Israel nearly as much as the Synoptics.   Pay attention to these things and your theology on Christ and His life will be more properly directed to what is actually being conveyed.   O God, Your word is a treasure and a delight. We are so thankful that You can take men who fish and turn them into men who will use that ability in a spiritual way to accomplish great things. As this is so, we know that You can use us just as we are to do similar great things. Use us according to Your wisdom, and may we be willing to follow wherever You lead. Amen.

Quiet Time Coaching Episode 495 | New Thing Series — Part 50 | “Peter's Reward” | Malcolm Cox Introduction A new thing! I'm Malcolm Cox. Welcome to your daily devotional podcast anchored in Isaiah 43:19: 'See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.' We are currently looking at God doing a new thing in the life of the Apostle Peter. Today we explore Peter's reward.  “He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.” (Luke 5:3-7 NRSV) Peter's Reward - Peter welcomes Jesus into his boat and hears him teach - Peter is reluctant to take fishing lessons from a carpenter - Peter is tired and frustrated - Nonetheless, Peter senses something different about Jesus and does what he suggests even though it makes no sense. - Peter experiences an extraordinary miracle. One which affected not only him, but his business partners. - Peter's encounter with Jesus is visceral and memorable. For Reflection Peter already knows something about Jesus. They met because of his brother Andrew (John 1:35-42). However, as far as we know, this is the first time he has come face-to-face with the miraculous attributes of Jesus. Tomorrow we will talk about more of its effect on him, but today we reflect on Peter's reward. What is the reward in this situation? Is it the promise of a bumper payday? I suggest not. More likely we are seeing a vision of Peter's purpose. As the Word Biblical Commentary puts it: “The miraculous catch…acts out in prophetic symbolism Simon's call to catch people.”  Of course, Peter doesn't get all this yet, but he soon will. For many of us, the calling to make disciples of all nations is perceived as a task, or perhaps a duty. A good task and duty, but nonetheless something like that. However, what if we view it as a reward? Somebody said to me years ago that the great commission, as it is called, might be better framed as the great permission. In other words, it's not so much that we have to go and make disciples, as that we have the immense privilege of participating with God in the making of disciples. He invites us into his joyful work — that of saving as many as possible. “Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.”” (Luke 5:10 NRSV) Why not take some time today to pray and ask God to create in you a sense of the way in which sharing our faith with those who are lost is a privilege, a joy and a reward? Conclusion I hope you find your heart, your life, your congregation and your world inspired by God doing a new thing. Until tomorrow, take care, and God bless.  Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Until tomorrow, take care, and God bless.  Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? How Jesus Developed World Changing Disciples

Many people are familiar with Jesus as a great public teacher who spoke to multitudes and worked many miracles. Yet it was what happened away from the crowds that was so important in the ministry and purpose of Jesus. Jesus was very intentional in focussing His time and energy on developing a small group of true followers who would carry on His work and become the foundation of a world changing movement. Over a period of three years Jesus constantly taught and corrected them and shaped their thinking, their attitudes, the way they perceived themselves and how they should act and react in different circumstances. The great growth of the first century church was a result of the coming of the Holy Spirit on the high-quality disciples that Jesus had worked so patiently to produce. If we want to see strong Christians and churches in our world, we must also make it our priority to find and form committed disciples of Jesus. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said ‘Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ'. Real Christianity is so different from just going to church. Instead every Christian must be trained to faithfully follow Jesus in every area of our Christian faith and in every part of everyday living. And in turn every trained disciple has the potential to train others to train others in an ever-increasing circle of influence in every nation and generation. In John 1:35-51 where Jesus chose the first of His team of 12 disciples, we see some important lessons about choosing disciples who have the potential to change the world.1. Jesus chose disciples who understood who He was (John 1:36-37,41,45,49)2. Jesus called disciples who wanted to be with Him (John 1:38-39; John 1:11-13)3. Jesus called disciples who were willing to share the good news (John 1:41; 44-46)4. Jesus called disciples who decided to follow and be formed by Him (John 1:43,50-51)ApplyHave you personally had a revelation of who Jesus is? The disciples were so excited about discovering Jesus (John 1:36-37,41,45,49). Each of these disciples came to have their own revelation of who Jesus really was. They perceived that He was the sacrificial lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world. They understood that Jesus was not just a religious teacher or miracle worker but the promised Messiah, the King of Israel and saviour of all. To grow as disciples, we too must also begin with a revelation of who Jesus really is. We need to understand who Jesus is for ourselves. It is not enough for us to hear about Jesus, we need to know Him in a personal way. It's not enough to grow up in church or even to know the teachings of the Bible - every disciple needs to have that revelation for themselves. There are many ways that we can come to this revelation of Jesus. Sometimes it is through pain or trouble which causes us to seek God. Or it may be through contact with a Christian friend or that we get this revelation just through reading part of the Bible like this book of John. What is so important though is that we come to see who Jesus really is. Do you sincerely want to spend time with Jesus? And do you want to be trained as a disciple? Jesus began to develop a relationship with His future disciples when He saw that they were sincere and serious about being with Him (John 1:38-39). He asked them what they wanted and when He saw that they wanted to spend time with Him to learn more, He made time for them. Jesus will never barge His way into your life, but He offers us the opportunity to come to Him and when we do, He will respond to us (John 1:11-13). We show our desire to know God when we seriously read the Bible to know more about Him and take time to pray to Him. And when we seek Him like this, we will always find Him. For He always responds to the responsive. Also if we want to be developed and trained as disciples we must want to be with proven Christian leaders. We must show that we want to spend time with them. We must tell them that we are ready to listen and to learn. Have you shared the good news of Jesus with others? Do you do this regularly, as part of your daily lifestyle? It is interesting to see that Jesus didn't recruit His team of 12 all on His own. The group grew as some disciples brought others to meet with Him. First we see that Peter, who was the spokesman for the disciples on the day of Pentecost, was introduced to Jesus by his brother Andrew (John 1:41). Then we read how Nathanael became a disciple through his link with Philip (John 1:44-46). Here we see how two disciples brought two more disciples into the group. And this is usually the way people come to Christ: through a family member or friend sharing what they have discovered with others and telling them to come and find out for themselves. Discipleship development is always outgoing not inward looking. Our calling is to share the good news of Jesus with others. Our small cell groups will grow when we all play our part to bring others to Jesus and to the church. The phrase 'where there is team there is conquest' shows that it's not all down to one person, we need to work together unitedly. Have you decided to follow Jesus and be formed by Him? In John 1:43 Jesus said ‘follow me'. This was an instruction, not a request. For the disciples to grow they needed to change from going their own way and doing their own thing. They needed to make a decision to follow Jesus. We have to each decide whether we are going to seriously follow Jesus or just live our lives our own way. Being a disciple of Jesus is not about Him going with you, it's about you going with Him. Have you made this decision? Have you said in the words of the old song: ‘I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back'? From the moment we decide to follow Jesus, a whole new world opens up to us. Nathanael was amazed that Jesus had spotted him sitting under a fig tree even when he had no previous contact with Jesus. But Jesus told him 'You will see greater things than that' (John 1:50-51). Today everything can change for you when you decide that you will fully commit your life to Jesus and to be trained as His disciple.

How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

For additional notes and resources check out Douglas’ website.IntroductionIn these NT character podcasts, we have already heard a lesson on the apostles Paul and Andrew. We continue our study with the balance of the better known apostles; the lesser known ones we will cover all together in the final podcast on the apostles. For Catholics he is the majestic prince of the apostles, as a visit to the Vatican will quickly remind one. The Orthodox view is nearer that of the Protestants: although he is a major apostle, he is no pope. Yet Protestants further downgrade Peter, perhaps in overreaction to papal claims. What is the truth about this man?Peter is mentioned nearly 180x in the NT (compared to nearly 300 mentions of Paul/Saul). Yet, though there isn't as much biblical material on him as there is in Paul's case, still Peter is a monumental character, and it would be impossible to sum up his life in a single podcast. He is often mentioned in the Gospels and in Acts 1-12. Then he appears in Acts 15. Paul refers to him in Galatians 2. Peter identifies himself in the salutations of 1 and 2 Peter. Further (speculative) information about Peter, lacking in the Bible, was more than made up for in later tradition! His letters reflect many of Jesus' teachings in the gospels. In addition, one historic event is alluded to -- the Transfiguration (2 Peter 1:16-18).Personal The name Petros (English Peter) comes from the Greek word for rock. In Aramaic he was Cephas, pronounced kay-pah (John 1:42; 1 Corinthians 1:12, 3:22, 9:5, 15:5; Galatians 1:18, 2:9,11,14). We might call him "Rocky." Since he's the son of Jonah (bar Jonah), a modernized equivalent for his full name would be "Rocky Johnson."Peter hailed from Bethsaida, which was also the home of Philip (John 1:44). This town has been excavated from 1987 on, and was soon afterwards identified as the biblical Bethsaida. What then about his "house" in Capernaum?Peter was a simple fisherman (Matthew 4:18; Mark 1:16; Acts 4:13).He was married; in Mark 1:29 his mother-in-law was healed, and in 1 Corinthians 9:5.As for 1-2 Peter, like most ancient writers, Peter employed the services of a scribe. The man who helped him write 1 Peter was Silvanus (1 Peter 5:12), also called Silas. Who assisted Peter with his second letter, we do not know. MinistryIntroduction to Jesus"We have found the Messiah" -- recruited by his brother Andrew (John 1:41).He was first called of the apostles, and this appointment is recorded in Matthew 10:2, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:14.Phase I: Training with the Twelve (Matthew 4-Acts 1), 27-30 ADPhase II: Twelve Years of Church Ministry (Acts 2-12), 30-42 ADPhase III: Later ministry (Acts 15, 1-2 Peter, later traditions), 49-64 ADConnection with Mark. 1 Peter 5:13 -- He is now in Rome (represented by the code-word "Babylon"), and close to Mark, who Papias says recorded Peter's words: "Mark having become the interpreter of Peter, wrote down accurately whatever he remembered. It was not, however, in exact order that he related the sayings or deeds of Christ. For he neither heard the Lord nor accompanied Him. But afterwards, as I said, he accompanied Peter, who accommodated his instructions to the necessities [of his hearers], but with no intention of giving a regular narrative of the Lord's sayings. Wherefore Mark made no mistake in thus writing some things as he remembered them. For of one thing he took special care, not to omit anything he had heard, and not to put anything fictitious into the statements. -- Eusebius, Church HistoryPreeminence?"For they say that Peter and James and John after the ascension of our Savior, as if also preferred by our Lord, strove not after honor, but chose James the Just as overseer of Jerusalem." -- Clement of Alexandria, c.190 AD.Papacy -- Orthodox do not recognize Peter as having been over the church at Jerusalem.Evidence of Acts 15.Spheres of influence -- see 2 Corinthians 10:16, Galatians 2:8.Snapshots Matthew 16:21-24 -- misunderstanding the call to follow Christ.Matthew 26:51-54 (see John 18:10, and hear the podcast on Malchus) -- Peter is rebuked for using force to prevent harm coming to Jesus.John 21:15-22 -- challenged to love Jesus above all, and without comparing his situation to those of other disciples.Acts 10:1-11:18 -- challenged to rethink the old law, in full acceptance of Gentiles as fellow believers.Galatians 2:11-14 -- challenged by Paul not to vacillate on this important principle. (2 Peter 3:15-16 -- continued respect for Paul.)1 Peter 5:1 -- a fellow elder and witness of Christ's sufferings. Peter had walked with the Lord a long time, received many corrections, and learned a lot about leadership by the time he was in his 60s.Martyrdom "Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!” (John 21:18-19). Crucified upside-down in Rome (Acts of Peter). If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?[b] 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and have seen him.”8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

John 11:1-45 English Standard Version (ESV)The Death of Lazarus11 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”I Am the Resurrection and the Life17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”Jesus Weeps28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”Jesus Raises Lazarus&

John 9 English Standard Version (ESV)Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind9 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out.35 Jesus heard&

John 3:1-17 English Standard Version (ESV)You Must Be Born Again3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God So Loved the World16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

John 4:5-26 English Standard Version (ESV)5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

Register your interest in Serviced Accommodation Discovery Day here, and a member of our team will get back to you to confirm your place at your preferred date.     Welcome to another episode of The Serviced Accommodation Property Podcast! Today's going to be interesting for a lot of people who do not realize that they could access their pension and put it into a self-invested personal pension (SIPP) and invest it in a property. Learn from Andrew John Ferguson, Managing Director of Penstar Developments Ltd., how accessing pension helped him accelerate his business and how is it different from what bridging loan companies offer. If it's your first time to hear about this, then better tune in! KEY TAKEAWAYS Utilize your pension to invest in properties. The usual refurnishing and refurbishing route is a long one so Andrew wanted to speed that up by finding another way – looking into pensions. He saw it sitting there underused so why not take advantage of it. A small self-administered scheme (SSAS) was created under his limited company which was used for property purchases. You can also be creative of how you structure the deal. Agree on a certain percentage that will go back to pension pot to grow it. 50% loan to limited company – 2 residential properties 50% commercial property Find someone who's experienced and has done it before. A financial advisor who knows about these stuff. He'll put you in contact with a pension administration company. Navigating though HMRC is laborious so getting advice is critical. Accessing pension was a gamechanger with its impact financially. Andrew didn't want to deal with bridging loan cost and extortion fees. If you compare of what his company was able to do with purchasing property and financing it themselves, it's extraordinary. Andrew has spent 20 years of his life in the corporate life and doesn't miss a single thing about it. It has been a fantastic journey. They get to do what they want to do. It gave them the freedom to build a legacy for the family through property portfolio. Building a circle with a 25-mile radius for serviced accommodation properties from where the company is situated. This is to utilize their team of cleaners, gardeners, and other contractors. They want to focus on the area near them. BEST MOMENTS “I thought I was gonna wait ‘til I was 55 before I could get my hands on it [pension]. But actually, discovering I could get to it now by a different route - by using it for SSAS - allowed us to bring those plans forward.” "The beauty of it is - the interest that we agree of the money we borrow from the pension fund is actually being paid back to ourselves. It's not being paid back to bridging loan companies." "We always expected that our career would come to a point that we don't wanna take it further and we saw property as being the next step." The passage we are going to look at today is a tremendous passage showing Jesus’ divinity, but also His eagerness and openness for us to follow Him! You see, Jesus welcomes you to come to Him! John 1:35-38 How gentle yet to the point. What do we seek Him for? John 1:39 “Come and see.” Jesus welcomes you! When we say, “Jesus, where are You? I need more of You!” He says, “Come and see.” John 1:40-46 “Come and see.” When faced with opposition to the invite, they only thing we have to say is, “Come and see.” The burden is on God to move in the hearts of those we invite to church, to life group or even into salvation. Let God prove Himself. Are our invitations to others compelling them to come and see? Could the reason we may not be successful with our invites be because we are perceived as “inviting others to church” instead of “inviting them to come and experience Jesus?” Are we showing others that we have “found the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth” and to come and see? “Come and see where prayers get answered!” “Come and see where marriages are restored!” “Come and see where hurts are mended!” “Come and see where the one who has the answers to your problems is!” “Don’t believe me… Come and see!” Jesus calls us daily, “Come and see.” The invite shifts from, “Come on and give church a try” to “You have to come and see… I have found the Messiah!” We see His divinity revealed as He confirms who He is to those that respond to the invitation… “Come and see.” John 1:47-51 This passage speaks to how Jesus dealt with Nathanael. Jesus met him at a personal level that removed any shadow of a doubt of who Jesus was. There is an important piece of the Scriptures that we just read that I want to make sure does not get overlooked. John the Baptist: John 1:35-36; Andrew: John 1:41; Philip John 1:45 There had been previous conversations between these people about the coming Messiah. About Jesus. Let Jesus reveal Himself to the people you are speaking to! If they doubt or question… what’s the response? “Come and see! Jesus welcomes you!”
