Remanufacturing: l'economia circolare oltre il riciclo

Smart City

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 21, 2024

Like most ICE vehicle components out there, EV components – everything from batteries to inverters – have a shelf life. When the end of life arrives, in some cases the best thing to do might be to recycle that component down to its raw materials. However, many of these EV components that are failing or degrading over time can be sustainably remanufactured to either extend their life or give them an entirely new life.TerrePower, a division of BBB Industries, takes this approach, with the goal of keeping EVs on the road as long as possible by taking a used EV part and sustainably manufacturing it for a new life, thereby avoiding recycling and disposal."When you think of sustainable manufacturing – we'll use an EV battery for example – your goal is to use as much of that part as possible. So if you look at a battery, you've got the battery pack. Within that pack are modules, and within those modules are cells. If a cell has an issue, we can look at the cell level and identify what that component failure is, fix it, we identify that issue," says Stephen Albert, director of business development and global EV product strategy for TerrePower at BBB Industries. "From there, we can increase the performance for the module that goes back into the pack that goes into the vehicle."On this episode of The Amped EV Podcast, Albert helps us understand the perks of sustainable manufacturing, and explains how the process can bring a failing EV battery back into the market so it's functioning a full power again, or in some cases, functioning even better than when it was new.The Buzz: www.thebuzzevnews.comAutel Energy: www.autelenergy.com

In today's episode we bring to you an example from South Africa that is --> Barloworld The idea of remanufacturing seems promising if you are on a quest to find answers through Circular Economy. In case some of you are hearing the term for the first time, remanufacturing forms a significant part of the circular economy. It involves process something like this- Once the component arrives to the facility, it is disassemble it completely and do an inspection on the component. We determine what parts need to be replaced with new and which parts can be refurbished and reused again. Parts then go through a process of cleaning, refurbishment, and then reassembly. After reassembly, the components are tested, painted, and then it's good-to-go back to the machine like new. Remanufactured products should not be understood as “used,” “refurbished,” “repaired” or “reused.” It's as good as brand new product. If done right, remanufacturing offered economic benefits of reduced costs of goods sold, reduced prices to the customer, supply risk mitigation and stronger relationships in the value chain. It is fascinating to see how leading Original Equipment Manufacturers around the world have taken to remanufacturing as a way to get started on their journey in a circular economy. But while remanufacturing sounds good in theory, it is challenging to implement it leave alone scale up the operations. To have strong remanufacturing process, an organisation needs to ensure set reverse logistics processes, along with strong business model that takes care of existing customers during the buy-back process. That's where Barloword captured my attention, because they have made this challenging idea possible through a fabulous implementation. Barloword is a South African industrial conglomerate, with the second-largest Caterpillar equipment remanufacturing plant in the world. Barloworld developed a 30,000 square meter facility: 20,000 square meters are for the rebuilding of components and the remainder, 10,000, is for warehousing purposes. Isn't that fascinating. In addition to new and Cat Certified Used equipment offerings, the Barloword Equipment Cat Rental Store provides innovative off balance sheet facilities. This enables customers to rent Cat machines for periods ranging up to two years, with end-of-contract purchase options made available. So this part of their business makes a seamless blend of remanufacturing along with offering product-as-a-service. Sherman has a BA in Government from The American University in Washington, D.C., studied Economics at the University of London and received a Masters of Business Administration from New York University. He has been a frequent lecturer on college campuses and an adjunct Professor of Marketing at Columbia Union College. Neal has been married for over thirty years to his wife Pam, a lawyer, actress, syndicated columnist, and global speaker (www.ThePamSherman.com). They have launched two children in the world and live in Rochester, New York. On our podcast, we are joined by Neal Sherman, the founder and President of TAGeX Brands. In our discussion, Neal shares his perspective on the hospitality and food industries amidst the global crisis. He talks about what it will look like when we come out on the other side, and what strategies we can use to thrive during this crisis. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Neal’s perspective on the hospitality and food industries amidst the global crisis What the pandemic has done to the restaurant and hospitality industries, and what it will look like when we come out on the other side Strategies that businesses in the hospitality and restaurant industries can use to thrive during this crisis How restaurants are adapting to the limitations of lockdown Some of the initial rollout contingencies we are seeing in Texas, and how restaurants are navigating them How these changes are forcing us to reinvent the restaurant experience How Neal helps businesses monetize what they aren’t using Restaurants in Distress Neal Sherman is the founder and President of TAGeX Brands, a global firm that handles all aspects of facility closure and equipment liquidation in the food industry. TAGeX is a mediator between buyers and sellers of restaurant equipment, facilitating transactions in a common marketplace for the betterment of the industry as a whole. On our podcast, Neal shares his perspective on the hospitality and food industries amidst the global crisis. Neal’s experience on the operations side of the restaurant business enables him to provide a unique viewpoint on what the pandemic has done to the industry. He talks about what it will look like when we come out on the other side, and what strategies we can use to thrive during this crisis. Change is Inevitable Many of us have seen the numbers depicting the impact that the global pandemic has had on the hospitality and restaurant industries. But Neal Sherman sees them through an entirely different lens. As of last week, 130,000 restaurants were closed in America, eight million people were displaced from their jobs, and the industry will lose about $225B in total. That number is only the operators—if you take into account all of the ancillary industries as well, the numbers are amplified. It is painful to watch, and even more painful to experience, but change is inevitable and we have to figure this out on our own. We can choose to sit in the corner and sulk, or we can get back in the ring and fight—it is our decision to make. Communication is Key The thin margins associated with the hospitality industry contribute to its volatility. But restaurants were not made to sustain protracted periods of time with no business. In most industries, businesses do not operate with a six-month cash reserve, and restaurants have even less of a cushion. They are doing what they can to adapt. Creative twists on take-out and delivery strategies are helping restaurant owners recoup some of their losses. But it is only making up around 10-20%. Restaurants have to balance reopening with what is feasible based on their books, but communication is the key to making it work. Many operators are negotiating sacred topics that are never traditionally negotiated, such as bank loans, rent, vendor terms, etc. It is not going to be easy Website: https://www.tagexbrands.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/neal-sherman-0781016/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/tagexbrands/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TAGeXBrandsLLC/ Twitter: @TAGexBrands Episode Transcript We value your thoughts and feedback and would love to hear from you. Remanufacturing is one of the circular economy strategies that helps us keep products, components and materials ‘in the system. It means we can have high-quality, reliable products and equipment with pretty much the same performance as a new version – and costing significantly less – for the customer, society and our environment. In today’s episode, I’m talking to Steve Haskew of Circular Computing, which remanufactures high-quality top-brand laptops, including Dell, HP and Lenovo. They are certified carbon-neutral, with performance tested as providing 97 per cent compared to a new model. Circular Computing has been remanufacturing since the 1990s, and provides laptops to education, public sector and even direct to consumers. Every machine goes through a 100+ point-check, any worn components are replaced and selected components are upgraded to give them a performance boost. The company now has over 250 staff and remanufacturing capacity of up to 10,000 units each month. We talk about the customer value proposition, and how remanufacturing is different to second-use products.

Remanufacturing allows us to use product components again at high quality while reducing energy demand by - in some cases - 80%. Given the material constraints we face, why this is not happening at a wider scale? In this episode, Nabil Nasr puts forward what he sees as the issues holding back remanufacturing.  Nabil Nasr is Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Director of the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology; he is also founder of the Centre for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery. This podcast series presented by Colin Webster explores the recently published book A New Dynamic 2: Effective systems in a circular economy. Each programme features an interview with authors of the book’s chapters. These leading experts on architecture, agriculture, design, business or engineering, provide unique insights that reflect on the necessity to develop a whole-system approach to re-think our economy.
