George first taught western history in Ghana with the foreign affairs agency. So when he volunteered in Tanzania with CUSO, he chose to teach African History and Politics, far from the colonialism state of mind at the time. He faced a lot of barriers to do so. Later in Nairobi, he worked to write and teach the Abagusii tribe history. He was arrested for that work but later it was used as a good example of documenting a tribe's history. A Graduate in anthropology and sociology at 19, Andria went to Kenya with CUSO-VSO with a strong taste for adventure. She taught in a secondary school for Tubu-tubu girls in the bush in the North of Nairobi. When she came back she worked in social development in BC. She is now the ED of March of Dimes. .My sister was staying at a fabulous Bed and Breakfast in Deep Cove called Lockehaven and told me that the owners name was Noulan Bowker and that he served with CUSO. She said that he remembered those years as some of the best of his life. I had to meet him and finally did.A young engineering graduate served with CUSO in 1971. He had adventured in the high north and so it wasn't a surprise for his family when he took an assignment. He was sure he wanted to go to Thailand. His assignment was in a place close to Bangkok at a technical college. He told me about how this assignment changed his world and he hoped that he had made a deference.I think he did. His idea of fixing equipment at the college may have taught his students to take matters in their own hands and make things work.It was a pleasure hearing his enthusiasm about his 2 year assignment. Michael arrived to meet me with his Professor of History, John Conway, on his bicycle. John too rides a bicycle very often. These two individuals were important in the international development scene that started at UBC in 1960. Keith Spicer was working at the same time at U of T. CUSO officially formed in 1961 at a meeting of Universities at McGill.Michael reads the letter he and Brian Marson wrote to the then President McKenzie of UBC. He dropped the letter off at President McKenzie's home. He wasn't home and Mrs. McKenzie put the letter of the President's pillow. His response was to call a meeting and the ball began to roll. 2011 will mark CUSO's 50th anniversay. 12,000 volunteers later, over 25 million volunteer hours, many staff, the support of CIDA and many donors. Thank you all ! These days I meet youth that tell me that their parents served with CUSO and they want to join CUSO-VSO.What a legacy!Cyril Belshaw, Lewis Perinbaum and so many more participated. The Vancouver Sun supported their first fund raising efforts.Michael has gone on to continue to make a difference in the world and recently was awarded the order of Canada. He thanks Professor Conway for inspiring him. It was simply wonderful having tea with them. He headed a Ghandian project in West Bengal which had its challenges. Rosamund Van Leeuwen went to Singapore as a volunteer for VSO in 1963. She was only 17 at the time and visually impaired since the age of two. A school for visually impaired and blind children had just opened up in Singapore, this is where she was an instructor. She had a three-fold job which involved acting as a liaison between teachers and children, instructing children in the daytime at the school, and educating the general public in Singapore about this disability. Even though she was only in Singapore for a year, it was the most fulfilling year of her life. Rosamund was lucky enough to grow up in the Golden Age, a period she says held no barriers for travelling and working. This NGO works to benefit children and families. Geoff is a social worker. Jill was an accompanying spouse and began settling her family. She then found s position with the Save the Children helping children write to foster parents. She then went on to create a space in a drop in program for Junior high students. This space encouraged creativity and choice in a more rigid school system. Jill is a teacher. A community activist Eva is a person concerned about the world and prepared to put her inquisitive mind to work From working in Geology to Diaspora volunteering in Guyana then to China to work as a funding advisor for HIV/AIDS. Listen to Eva' story .... continued. We did this interview in a coffee shop with the sound of grinders and people. Eva has a PhD in Geology. She describes herself as a " Hard Rock Doctor". She worked on Canadian shield mapping. She describes some forms of mining as "long term environmental impact for short term gain" Eva is a community activist by nature and has served VSO and now CUSO-VSO for over 2 years. Her assignments have been varied. A perfect case of an inquisitive mind. Her first service was in Guyana doing work with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission. This led to work with the Guyanese Diaspora. Imagine the brain drain when half the population of a country have left to live in other parts of the world. 52,000 Guyanese live in Canada mostly in the Toronto area. Diaspora volunteering can reverse the brain drain phenomenon. Photo- Eva in Fugong Province. SW China.
