You're going to get sick of hearing my voice if this keeps up. Or… our voice, I guess? I'm not Red, nor am I Scarlet. Keeping on theme, you can call me Rosy. Not like the flower, but like when your cheeks get rosy in the cold. We don't have any more roses. Not here, anyway. They'd get smothered under all this snow. I hope it's warmer where you are. I mean it would have to be, your car wouldn't work if it was this cold. That's why we have to walk everywhere. Well, snowshoe. And not… ‘we'. My group does the walking. I stay and mind the fire, while they go out and hunt, forage, chop wood. I get… I think Doc called it ‘Cold-induced… Brontospasms? I don't think that's right, but it's close. My lungs don't work well in the cold. Which is… inconvenient to say the least. The journey here was… rough. But because of that, it means I'm almost always the one to stay behind and tend to the fire. Plus Walt really doesn't trust me with an axe with my missing fingers. Frostbite's a bitch. I don't mind staying behind. It's… actually kind of nice, having the place to myself, every now and then. It's funny, I left an empty bunker six years ago to try and find people, and I succeeded… but there are still some times that I… miss the solitude. We're all over each other here, have to sleep huddled up for warmth. You always wake up in someone else's armpit. And they're loud. The snoring, the way they laugh, the way they argue. We used to listen to your broadcasts when they were more regular, and I think that was the only time of day that everyone was quiet. All listening to you. It was… it was really nice. Those nights didn't feel as cold. You brought warmth to our little group. I miss that. I know you… you wanted your life to be your own again, to not be married to a radio, I get that. I still miss it, that's all. Without you, we've had to resort to other methods of entertainment, which… well, I don't know if you've ever tried to play Crazy Eights with a few missing digits, but… anyway. Sometimes Xue reads for us, but a lot of the guys don't have the patience for it. And they get sick of hearing the same stories over and over. We've got limited books. It isn't perfect, here, I won't lie. We're cold, and we're hungry. And we snap at each other a lot. But… we're other people. And if you have a hunger for that… well, you can always come and find us. I don't know our exact location, just the rough journey I took here, some of the place names. Erie. Sunflower. Newcastle. Four Corners. Just… keep going north until you find a whole lot of nothing. That's where I'll be. Or… I am in my universe, at least. Hopefully if you head there, there's something in yours, too. Just… remember to pack to your mittens.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A mysterious wasting disease has been decimating sea star populations along the West Coast since 2013. The illness works quickly, causing sea stars to lose limbs and reducing them to a pile of goo in a matter of weeks. Sunflower sea stars have been particularly hard-hit — roughly 90% of their global population has succumbed to the disease, possibly contributing to the demise of many West Coast kelp forests. The cause of the wasting disease has stumped scientists for more than a decade. But now, a team of Northwest researchers have identified a bacteria that appears to be behind the illness. Alyssa Gehman is a marine disease ecologist at the Hakai Institute, a marine research organization in British Columbia. She joins us with more details on what the breakthrough could mean for sea star recovery.
In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael sat down with Megan Gordon, Executive Director of the Page Alliance for Community Action (PACA), to discuss the organization's tireless efforts to keep Page County's youth and families healthy and drug-free. Since its inception in 2006, PACA has grown from a small nonprofit into a cornerstone of community wellness, thanks in part to federal grants and a dedicated coalition of local partners. Gordon shared how PACA's mission goes far beyond the outdated “just say no” approach. Instead, the organization focuses on education, prevention, and providing positive alternatives for young people. From collaborating with law enforcement on compliance checks to distributing medicine lock boxes and timer caps, PACA tackles substance misuse from every angle. Their initiatives include afterschool programs, community gardens, and evidence-based lessons in schools, all designed to reduce risk factors and build protective environments for youth. The conversation also touched on the evolving landscape of substance misuse, with new challenges like fentanyl and vaping requiring constant adaptation. Gordon emphasized the importance of community involvement, noting that PACA's coalition includes everyone from hospital staff and law enforcement to parents and youth. “It really takes grassroots efforts,” she explained, “and that's what coalitions are.” Funding remains a persistent challenge, especially as federal grants face cuts. To sustain their work, PACA relies on fundraising and community support. One of their most beloved events is the annual Page Valley Sunflower Festival, a vibrant celebration that brings together families, local businesses, and visitors for a day of music, crafts, hayrides, and, of course, sunflower picking. The festival, now in its sixth year, is a testament to the power of partnership, with the town of Luray and numerous local organizations pitching in to make it a success. As the episode wrapped up, Gordon encouraged listeners to get involved—whether by attending the festival, becoming a sponsor, or simply reaching out for advice. With its blend of practical support, education, and community spirit, PACA is truly planting seeds of change in Page County, one sunflower at a time.

In this episode, Angie—your cruise director through the cosmos and lover of lion-hearted wisdom—guides us through the astrology of August 2025, a month pulsing with retrogrades, portals, and a quiet kind of transformation. With Mercury, Saturn, Neptune, Pluto, and Chiron all retrograde, the skies are asking us to slow down, look inward, and do the sacred work of integration. We're not meant to push forward this month—we're meant to listen to the rumblings beneath the surface. We explore the Lion's Gate on 8/8, a potent spiritual portal of renewal and soul alignment, followed by an emotionally clarifying Aquarius Full Moon on 8/9. Mercury stations direct on 8/11, Venus conjoins Jupiter in Cancer, and by mid-month we're pivoting toward Virgo's grounded energy with a deeply healing New Moon at 0° Virgo on 8/23—our official threshold into Eclipse Season.Alongside the cosmic currents, we're held by earth medicine:Sunflower teaches us to follow the light, even when it's hidden—and to lean toward each other when we can't find it on our own.Mountain Lion offers courage, presence, and sovereignty, especially in moments when we feel uncertain or unseen.Peridot brings heart-cleansing, solar plexus-strengthening clarity—reminding us we don't have to carry what's not ours. This month is about emotional recalibration, intuitive trust, and preparing the soil for the eclipses to come. Grab your peridot, light a candle for your inner mountain lion, and meet us in the sunflower field between fire and stillness.

Send us a textOn this episode of the Another Way To See It podcast, we reflect on the immensity of the terrain we've covered in season 4. This year we've witnessed a contentious election, lived through the heartbreaking images of genocide, felt the Earth protest in hurricanes, floods, and fires, we resisted AI, we looked on in disbelief as our neighbors got snatched off the streets, and so so much more. Our hearts broke open and tears fell with each new episode. There was and is so much to process, so much to feel. In season 4 we welcomed 12 guests, each bringing their authenticity and vulnerability to our listeners. We are in deep appreciation to: Sunflower, Kate, Dre, Devon, Joëlle, Christine, Jessica, Jackie, Danielle, Kimberly, Adéllyn, and Noelle, for being role models, inspirations, and guides. This season we lost some dear ones, teachers and friends who are now ancestors. May their work live on through us. Our view of nature is often constrained by the idea of competition: life as a zero-sum game, where the victorious survive, and the defeated fade into extinction. But not every relationship in life is competitive! Sure, as living things, we must always be aware of our enemies, but our survival is just as closely tied to our social entanglements- our family, friends, neighbors, and communities. In a rebuttal to the hyper-competitive view of ecology, Rachel shares evidence from a growing field of botany that dares to look at how plants behave by applying social theory to their choices. There are many conversations happening among the plants of our grasslands that we haven't been hearing, and it's time to unpack the complexity of these interspecies relationships if we want to really understand how this ecosystem works. Register your feedback here. Always good to hear from you!In years past I've tried to supply four lists of books around this time of year — my best books, the books that made me think the most, the most surprising books I've read, and the most disappointing books I've read. Unless I hear a barrage of protests, I'm going to cull that to two lists this year. I may or may not talk about surprising and disappointing books in December. For now, though, I'm contenting myself with two. Last week it was thinky books; today I share my favorites. It's been a pretty good year so far; here's hoping the best is still to come. Here's the list:10. Race to the Top of the World, by Sheldon Bart9. Moscow Nights: The Van Cliburn Story, by Nigel Cliff8. Laughing Matters, various writers, edited by Gene Shallot7. A Brilliant Solution, by Carol Berkin6. The Beatles: A Hard Day's Write, by Steve Turner5. The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck4. Jesus: Who is He?, by Tim LaHaye3. Mightier than the Sword, by David S. Reynolds2. Robert E. Lee and Me, by Ty Seidule1. In this episode of the Kidney Stone Diet Podcast, hosts Jeff Sarris and Jill Harris discuss the relationship between peanut butter and kidney stones. Jill explains the oxalate content in peanut butter and how it can affect kidney stone formation. They emphasize the importance of portion control and suggest alternatives for those concerned about oxalates. The conversation also touches on caloric considerations and the need to push back against overly restrictive dietary recommendations from healthcare providers.TakeawaysPeanut butter can contribute to kidney stones if consumed excessively. Two tablespoons of peanut butter contain about 30 milligrams of oxalate.Portion control is key; moderation allows for peanut butter in the diet.Pairing peanut butter with calcium-rich foods can mitigate oxalate absorption.Sunflower seed butter is a lower oxalate alternative to peanut butter.Granola butter, while low in oxalate, can be high in calories. Many people overeat low oxalate foods, leading to weight gain.Using powdered peanut butter can reduce calorie intake.Consult the Harvard Oxalate list for accurate oxalate content.Push back on restrictive dietary recommendations from doctors if not medically necessary.00:00 Introduction to Peanut Butter and Kidney Stones06:18 Caloric Considerations and Healthy Substitutes——HAVE A QUESTION? _Leave us a voicemail at (773) 789-8764.KIDNEY STONE DIET® APPROVED PRODUCTSProtein Powders, Snacks, and moreWORK WITH JILL _Start HereKidney Stone Diet® All-Access PassKidney Stone Diet® CourseKidney Stone Diet® Meal PlansKidney Stone Diet® BooksPrivate Consultation with JillOne-on-One Deep Dive24-Hour Urine AnalysisSUPPORT THE SHOW _Join the PatreonRate Kidney Stone Diet on Apple Podcasts or Spotify——WHO IS JILL HARRIS? _Since 1998, Jill Harris has been the #1 kidney stone prevention nurse helping patients reduce their kidney stone risk.
