Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - The 2025 Rural Islands Economic Partnership (RIEP) Virtual Forum is coming up Thursday and Friday, March 6th and 7th.  Two of the organizers, Francine Carlin and Kate Maddigan are my guests today. “ It's going to be a jam packed two half days, 9:15 AM to 12:30 PM.  Our virtual events are really unique because we all live on islands or coastal remote communities and don't have the opportunity to get together as a collaborative regional grouping. So it's important to have these virtual events that bring together people from all across the coast and the islands, up from North Island as far as Alert Bay, to Sooke and beyond. So we have a pretty broad reach and this year it's really important, particularly with the events in the world around economic  issues that relate to  our local  economic and social wellbeing,” explained Francine Carlin, Chair of the Rural Islands Economic Partnership.  “Our theme this year  is adaptation, innovation, and resilience, because in these times you need to be able to adapt to change. You need to be innovative in terms of what you are doing to keep small businesses vibrant and alive during these challenging times and to be resilient.  It's an ongoing process to ensure that we have our sovereignty as a nation. And that we have our local communities and our local economies thriving as best they can.” “The opening sessions will be looking at our economic snapshot in terms of what exactly and who exactly are we in terms of our population, our economy, our, our health and wellbeing. We're going to follow up with a program around how we share our services. How we can leverage our economies of scale to be more resilient in times of change. Then moving into using  artificial intelligence” Is it a friend or an enemy? Or fremony? (laughter)  You have to find a way to use it so that it doesn't overpower and that we can take advantage of the technologies that have been evolving for the last 30 years.”  “Day two is looking at economic reconciliation. What is that all about in terms of how we're going to work collaboratively and in concert with the indigenous communities that live and work on these islands and across the remote coast. We're having former MLA, Adam Olson, who is now the Chief Negotiator for the Tsartlip Nation.  One of the reasons that our Southern Gulf Islands got into the Island Coast Economic Trust and was able to apply for funds there was because of his advocacy with the province.  He's going to be speaking to us about working together with Indigenous communities to ensure a diverse and integrated economy over time. The most difficult thing to pull together was what we're calling this Learning Exchange. We're bringing together about nine Representatives of organizations from across the islands and the coast to share everything from housing initiatives and solutions to climate adaptation to food security and social enterprise.”

If you are interested in creating a course for your college or university, you will be enriched by this discussion which provides a step by step process including questions to ask, ways to facilitate the learning experience, stakeholders to consult, and general advice on how to attempt something in your particular area. Everything is context specific, so we will delve into George Brown College in particular, but this discussion is helpful to replicate in any context. “I think I was lucky to be a teacher of very young children as my first career. They taught me so much about the joy of teaching and learning. Within the first few months of teaching it was clear to me that mutual learning created authenticity and trust. We had wonderful fun together growing with and for each other. Many of my current ways of thinking and acting developed during those few years with these young minds. I left the formal classroom 50 years ago taking with me new ways of working, teaching, and being. Since then, I have founded and been part of teams — The Learning Exchange, M G Taylor Corporation, Tomorrow Makers —developing processes, methods, and content with and for adults that help all of us find our way back to that childlike wonder where I believe our answers to today/s challenges will arise.” - Gail Taylor In this episode of Control the Room, I had the pleasure of speaking with Gail Taylor & Matt Taylor about their decades of experience creating environments, tools and processes for facilitating Group Genius with large complex organizations.  They begin with how they became facilitators and how they came to the same conclusion from two totally different backgrounds.  Later, they explain how working across many industries help them bring competitors together to solve complex problems.  We also discuss language and how verbs better describe who we are.  Listen in for many more tips from these two of the two giants of facilitation.

Emotions like learning are brain activities and are far more deeply interconnected than we often give them credit. The way we feel dramatically influences the way we think and perceive the world. As a result, it can have a dramatic influence on what and how we learn. That means it’s critical that we do our best to take them into account when we think about learning and learning technology even though it’s a complex variable and not universal for all our learners. Listen as I talk with Mike Kirk & Lea Sorrentino from BI Worldwide about the impact of emotions and feelings on the learner experience and ways we can be more intentional about ensuring we’ve accounted for that in our planning. You’ll also hear more about their Learning eXchange platform designed to keep that at its core. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/learningtechtalks/support

Happy 2020! Welcome to the 3rd episode of season 4 of the Literacy Quebec Podcast! In this week’s episode we recorded our regular book club at the LQ office. We discussed the book Dare to Lead by Brene Brown, which fits perfectly in with the topic we wanted to launch into 2020 with How to Fail Successfully in 2020. We also talk about Cal Newport’s Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World to learn about how to reduce busywork and increase purposeful work. Some of the questions we discussed after reading the section of Dare to Lead were: 1) Did you make any resolutions for 2020? Why/why not? 2) What are some markers of success to you? 3) What is failure to you? 4) Are failures the opposite of successes? 5) How can failures be useful to you? 6) Brene Brown talks a lot about the connections between failure, shame and vulnerability. What did you think of her tools for self-reflection? 7) What are some of your own Shitty First Drafts? Why did we choose this topic of Failure (a dirty word!) when everybody else is taking about Success and making New Year Resolutions? Well, through our discussion about how we each felt about failure, some of the failures in our own lives and learning new ways to deal with failure when it happens, we found that failure in almost every case was necessary in order for us to form deeper relationships with people, deeper and more meaningful work in our careers, becoming more stable and emotionally resilient, making better decisions in life, and living in a more content, grateful, happy state. In this episode, we spoke to learners, lunchers, and a researcher about some of the obstacles and creative solutions to gaining different types of literacy skills. We had the chance to present the podcast at Reclaim Literacy's weekly Lunch and Learn. We discussed digital literacy and access to podcasts with Betty, Ruth and Sylvia. We also had the opportunity to chat and get advice from Jonathan and Lorenzo from CDC Vimont and the Learning Exchange in Laval. Paul Lalonde, a researcher from the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation, speaks with Jaimie in Ottawa about the findings of Frontier College's National report, "Literacy and Essential Skills as a Poverty Reduction Strategy." And we end the show with the many upcoming literacy events submitted by our member organisations. We are still looking for runners and volunteers for the charity run in Montreal on April 27th!
