Indian tennis great Leander Paes joins us to reflect on his glittering career ahead of his induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Paes tells us he gave up on his dreams of making it as a footballer with FC Barcelona, when a coach told him he would need to relinquish his Indian passport in favour of a European one, in order to progress in the sport. He also reflects on his early struggles in tennis and how he met Muhammad Ali at the 1996 Olympics after he won a bronze medal at the Games.Zion Clark is an MMA fighter, wrestler and Olympic hopeful. The American was also born with a rare condition called Caudal Regression Syndrome, which left him without legs and after being given up for adoption, he spent his childhood in the care system. He joins us along with his mentor Craig Levinson to discuss his remarkable story.And – former England netballer Sonia Mkoloma tells us how excited she is about being a referee on the television sports entertainment show Gladiators. In 2003, arguably one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Roger Federer won the Wimbledon Men's title. Aged just 21, it was his first major win and was the start of a record eight men's single titles at the championships. In 1993, the Czech player Jana Novotna threw away a huge lead in the ladies' final at Wimbledon but captured the hearts of tennis fans by breaking down in tears on the shoulder of the Duchess of Kent, the tournament's patron. Five years later, Novotna was back on Centre Court and this time she won. She tells her story to Kirsty McQuire. Jana Novotna died of ovarian cancer in 2017. In the summer of 1983, New Zealand tennis player Chris Lewis reached the Wimbledon men's singles final, despite being ranked 91 in the world. Although it shocked the tournament, Lewis had been targeting it since he was 11 years old, when he watched tennis greats including Rod Laver and Tony Roche play in his home country. LUC managing director Jon Grantham is clear about the two biggest challenges facing his firm. "We need more people with the right skills" he says adding the skills shortage is a huge challenge for LUC and most horticultural businesses. But the second and "overriding priority" is "the role we play in tackling the climate and ecological crisis". Grantham outlines LUC's strategy on both of these in this podcast episode.LUC is a planning, impact assessment, landscape design, ecology and geospacial consultancy and has had a successful year financially, which Grantham puts down to the quality of its almost 270 employees and the results of it becoming an Employee Ownership Trust, which was expanded to include all LUC's employees in 2020. Diversification of services has also given the firm a broad base upon which to build, he says.Discussing some of the biggest projects LUC has been working on this year, Jon Grantham highlights the award winning Clay Pits project in Glasgowas well as LUC's role as lead masterplanners on the expansion of The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club in Wimbledon. Another significant project on LUC's books is the All-England Strategic Landscape Mapping Assessment commissioned by Natural England. LUC's GIS and visualisation team along with landscape planners are leading on this project, which will look at “Whether we should be designationing new nationally significant landscapes, but expanding criteria for doing that to bring in more social and economic considerations alongside environmental considerations.” While it's still in its early stages, Grantham explains exactly what they hope will come from this work.Grantham touches upon how Covid is still affecting the business, but for the better, resulting in an optimum balance between work and life which LUC believes is crucial to productivity. He goes on to explain how it has also influenced projects with everyone thinking more locally, and, crucially, acknowledging that important connection between health and well-being and open green space and the need to extend access to "hard to reach groups".But "Environment is a key client" says Grantham, and as well as advising and guiding others, LUC is looking at what it can do in the wake of the climate and ecological crisis, with Grantham noting “we can't be going around preaching to others that they should do it if we're not doing it ourselves.” Hosted on Acast. Breaking down croquet in Buffalo with Buffalo Croquet Club President Bob Gannon

Game. Set. Sibling rivalry. This week the Moonlight Graham Show takes the pod on the road to the All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club in Charles City, Iowa. This little-known gem has earned the nickname “The Court of Dreams.” The AILTC might be the only true grass tennis court in the state. It is styled after, and named after, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which hosts the iconic Wimbledon Championships tennis tournament. Neil and Tim record while on the road to Charles City and then on the ride home from their match to reflect on their experience.   Mark and Denise Kuhn built the All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club court as a passion project on their family farm. Mark Kuhn grew up listening to the Wimbledon Championships on the radio and dreamed of playing on center court. That dream became a reality about 20 years ago as the family began the process of converting a cattle feedlot into a top-tier grass court.    Mark Kuhn's research and preparation began with a call to Iowa State University to understand turf management and horticulture. The AILTC website includes images from the construction process, which included grading the tons of sandy soil that were brought in, planning drainage and irrigation, and picking up every little rock along the way.   If you haven't picked up on this yet, the Flattery boys are competitors. This isn't just a friendly exhibition match. This is the most important tennis match that either brother has ever participated in. Neither man wanted this to go down as a loss and had to devise a plan to manage their frustrations to avoid slamming/breaking rackets or taking a divot out of the Court of Dreams.    The match came down to a tie-breaker super set as Tim took the first match and Neil came back to win the second match. Their version of the Flattery Iowa-style Wimbledon took the full two hours of their court reservation and came down to the last point.

Neil Stubley is the Head of Courts and Horticulture at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.  In that role, his most high-profile function is to prepare the grass courts each year for Wimbledon. Neil feels if he and his team have done their best work, you will have no reason to talk about the playing surface and instead can focus on the players.  In this episode, Neil discusses the work that goes into having the courts in their peak condition for the Wimbledon fortnight, the challenges grass presents in being a living surface, the lengths the Club goes to in an effort to ensure it's not just the courts that look spectacular for the British summer and he even admits that his own lawn at home is nothing to brag about!   

Today Dead Man's Coat Day Thirty four of the Spanish Lockdown, the sometimes amusing, diary of a Brit in southern Spain under the 'Alarma' - normal life has stopped.   To find out more:  https://www.thesecretspain.com Day 34 Dead man’s coat   It is day 34 of our Spanish lockdown and the day started fractious, we bickered about something or other, so I took the three good legs cat for his walk to get some space.   We are very, very lucky in that we have more than 150 square metres of terraces and even a narrow mountain garden that separates us from our neighbours.   I have a workshop down in the pool room and Chris has his gym area up behind the garage.  It allows us to stay home but enjoy some space.  My favourite space that I also share with the cat, is our little voice studio that sits behind the house, between the mountain and the back wall.   I have spent most of the day sticking back the acoustic tiles that were removed for the electrician when we had our building work done.  Again this is not an easy process. I use contact adhesive glue to stick the tiles.. so had to source that from Amazon, but it came in about four days.   Last night I watched the YouTube channel “Doing it Ourselves” about a family who are slowly restoring the magnificent French Chateau De La Basmaignee.  They are having similar challenges and now can only do work with what they have around them, making the best use of things that are in their workshop, left over wood stain, re-purposing and cutting sand paper to fit the sander.   Weirdly it has actually made their channel even more watchable, the place is extraordinary, filled with old paintings and antiques, but also many rooms are in a stately ruin. There was a bit where they had to shovel tons of pigeon shite from the attic, celebrating by raising up their cherry picker to the top of the roof and attaching the Chateau flag to the flag pole.  It looked very dangerous, very good TV.   I find myself more and more vicariously living my life through others.  I guess being trapped inside for most of the time I am longing to get out, go to the shops, eat at a restaurant, do all the normal social things again.   We watched Foxes Afloat, two guys on a narrowboat who are having to move to get water.  The whole of the British canal system is on Lockdown and you can only move your boat for essential reasons. But their channel is, well normal, but hugely enjoyable.  Colin one of the guys on the narrowboat has a natural talent for photography and his drone shots over the rolling English countryside are spectacular.   I try very hard to make the weekends different, spending less time on the internet and getting out in the garden or, today repurposing an IKEA unit for our little studio.   We learnt today that one of our colleagues from LBC had died of Motor Neurone Disease.  I dearly loved Steve Butterick he was one of the most affable men I have ever met and more laid back than Dylan the rabbit in The Magic Roundabout.   He had a soft laughing face, just like Dylan too. Somehow he contrived to take the whole of Wimbledon off from work every year, he loved tennis and used to go and work for Radio Wimbledon the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’s own radio station.   He was also one of the most frugal men I have ever met.  We were once working together and he told me he had seen a carpet in pretty good nick in a skip outside some business or other.  He decided to return later in the evening and retrieve it.  It nearly killed him pulling out the carpet from the skip and then he had to drag it back home.. and then laid it in one of his rooms.   Another time he turned up in a very natty suit.  “Where did you buy that suit?” I asked “From a charity shop.” He replied.  Now this would have been the 1990’s before Charity Shops became cool.    I said it looked like a drug dealers’ suit.  “Funny you should say that as I think I have found a bullet hole in it.” He was joking but there was a very suspicious hole right by the breast pocket, I would imagine the work of a moth.     Motor Neurone is a foul disease, Chris’ mum died from it, her demise was quick.  It began by her having trouble swallowing food, it ended with her in a wheelchair.  Mercifully she died in hospital of a heart attack.   Death and of course taxes are inevitable we hear today that the Spanish Prime Minister does not think bars or restaurants will begin operating until the end of this year.  It all sounds a bit bleak again, but there is hope from the 26th April he will allow children out to exercise and play, if anything the children have shown us adults how to behave, they have stayed at home drawn rainbows, sent messages of love and support to the vulnerable, sung songs and embraced the virtual world that we now live in.

Billie Jean King wins “battle of the sexes” in tennis. No woman player was a match for him, declared 55 year-old tennis star Bobby Riggs. His overtly chauvinist claim drew an estimated 50 million viewers to his September 20, 1973 match with 20-times Wimbledon champion Billie Jean King, aged 29. In Houston, Texas’s packed Astrodome, King beat Riggs in three straight sets – 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 – and clinched the $100,000 winner-take-all prize. Despite the public jabs between them that led to this “battle of the sexes,” Riggs and King became friends until his death from prostate cancer in 1995. Although King is the recipient of numerous tennis awards, including 39 Grand Slams, she always had to push for equality within the world of sports because for many years, women earned less prize money than men for the same sport. One of the final hold-outs was Wimbledon. However, in February 2007 the managers of the world’s most prestigious tournament - the All England Tennis and Croquet Club and the Lawn Tennis Association - announced that men and women would be awarded equal prize money. Я же с нетерпением жду книгу у нас в стране, дабы получить лучший подарок к Новому году. Ведь эта книга — про честность. Про честность в отношении к вещам, которыми ты занимаешься. Про честность переживаемых эмоций. И наконец, про то, что честность в музыке всегда побеждает.Из последних альбомов, вышедших в ноябре, отмечу новый альбом легендарных Tilt. Их Resonator натолкнул меня на мысль, что качественную музыку, написанную не под один шаблон все еще делают. Каждое творение их альбома я отслушал по несколько раз, но эту музыку хочется слушать еще и еще.Отмечу и альбом прогрессивных израильтян Guy Mantzur и Sahar Z под названием Time. Очень эпический альбом получился у ребят, такая себе история, которую очень приятно слушать и проживать вместе с автором. Касательно же #63 эпизода моего радиошоу MAXIMUM, то он получился очень и очень теплым по звучанию, мягким и глубоким по смыслу.
