Mid July, this year -- 2024 – Rebecca McKean and I flew into Chicago and then drove to Maloy Iowa – a few miles north of the Missouri border. We passed Joliet – Dekalk – Moline – Iowa City – Cedar Rapids - Ottunwa - Mt Ayr – then – Maloy, Iowa.At one time – not so long ago – Maloy had a small population. Its buildings remain: A medium sized Catholic Church – small Post Office – General Store – Dance Hall – City Hall. Now it is mostly empty – a husk of a town surrounded by massive corn fields.Becky and I were visiting two Catholic Worker friends who had been cultivating a small vegetable – goat and chicken farm since 1986. Their two children grew up in Maloy on the “Strangers and Guests Catholic Worker Community Farm.”Over those years -- besides working the farm -- Betsy Kenan perfected the crafts of weaving and looming – and Brian Terrell travelled protesting war and the spread of U.S. military and nuclear bombs throughout the world._____________________________For the next three BCR programs – we talked with Brian – Betsy and their friends in Maloy and Creston IA to get a feel for life in this American state which overwhelmingly supports Donald Trump for president, bans abortions after six weeks -- and which -- we learned – might be considering alternative – diverse -- ways of being in mid-America.The opening sound was recorded on Betsy's and Brian's porch. Nate Jarrell on the violin – Nate is a young peace activist and musician and builder who was visiting Brian and Betsy on their Catholic Worker Farm – and Don Ray – a neighbor up the road was playing the guitar – Hosted on Acast. For decades, the Original Spanish Kitchen served meals to Hollywood customers like Bob Hope, Linda Darnell, Mary Pickford, and John Barrymore. Opened in 1932 it was a sister restaurant to one downtown, owned by Johnny and Pearl Caretto. Their enchiladas were the talk of the town, attracting show-business personalities as regulars. Silverscreen legend, Mary Pickford, had her own booth, by the door, offering up not only autographs to fans, but also recipes to Johnny. In 1961, the restaurant closed for vacation, however, it would be a permanent vacation. Following its closure, the building's contents were left intact for years afterward, the tables remaining set with full table settings and linens. The restaurant's sudden closure gave rise to urban legends that the owners, who lived in an apartment above the restaurant, were murdered by the mob. Another legend suggested a lovers quarrel. The truth was more prosaic, according to a 1986 article in Tables magazine by reporter Don Ray. He determined that the owner had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and the restaurant had been shuttered by his wife after she found that she was not up to the task of running it. Johnny passes away a few years after his diagnosis and Pearl eventually follows a few decades later. The property lays dormant until the Caretto family sells the property to a couple who turn the kitchen into Ona Spa & Prive Salon. Soon after the salon and spa open, ghost stories began to circulate. Workers in Ona Spa, which was located on the second floor, would sense a presence within the space. Stylists would claim as though they were being watched, see an unusual shadow figure in the corner of their eye and hear phantom footsteps around the staircase area. One of the co-owners of the spa and salon would feel the temperature suddenly drop out of nowhere. Our guest Richie Dueñez, LA native and former manager of Prive Salon, sits down with us to confirm the strange activity during his time working within the once-popular salon and spa. Dueñez also shares his interesting discovery of an old Original Spanish Kitchen pan within the property along with his cultural and family connections of the once-famous kitchen.

VE 131 Prehistoric Rock Today on the VE---rock, before it rolled. A rumage through the pre-historic rock vaults for songs that foreshadowed rock and roll, compiled by guest programmer Dan Miele. These are vintage recordings but their vitality will surprise you. I'm PC and this is the VE Roll 'Em Pete Big Joe Turner 1938 Prehistoric rock on the VE. From the year 1938 AD that's the blues shouting daddy of em all, Big Joe Turner with "Roll Em Pete." One of the first R&B recordings to make use of what was to become the rock and roll back beat - as opposed to the more common shuffle rhythm. This song was later recorded by Count Basie, and Joe recorded with the Basie band in later years. Joe Turner was the frist to record Shake, Rattle and Roll, which later became a hit for Bill Haley and His Comets. Things are really rockin at the House Of Blue Lights....Freddie Slack and Ella May Morse... House of Blue Lights Freddie Slack (co-writer with Don Ray) and Ella Mae Morse 1946 Down the Road Apiece: Will Bradley Trio 1940 Dinosaurs roam the earth again--it's prehistoric rock on the VE. A couple there that were echoed in 60s rock. Mitch Ryder refefrenced "house Of Blue Lights" by Freddie Slack and Ella Mae Morse, and The Rolling Stones covered Will Bradley's "Down The Road Apiece." Robert Plant recorded this one by Wynonie Mr Blues Harris with his group The Honeydrippers...and I'll follow it up with the song that gave th eband their name......... Good Rockin' Tonight: Wynonie Harris: 1948 Joe Liggins: The Honeydripper The Honeydripper was Joe Liggins, who along with Wynonie Harris, was an inspiration to Robert Plant. It's prehistoric rock on the VE. Here are a couple you'll know from their rock covers by Aerosmith and George Thorogood.... Bull Moose Jackson: Big Ten Inch ***pull from YOutube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJpO4ObZSdg Amos Milburn: One Bourbon, One Scotch One Beer *** pull from youtubehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TqglR7YG1Y The VE with prehistoric rock from Amos Milburn and Bull Moose Jackson...with the original versions of songs you know well from seventies rock. Here's someon ewho held the title "queen of rock and roll" when the competition iin thie category was pretty slim....but Sister Rosetta Tharpe had it all goin gon...gospel chops and sex appeal.... Sister Rosetta Tharpe: Rock Daniel 1941 The Fat Man: Fats Domino: The VE with PreHistoric Rock....but it begins inprope with thhe fat man, Antione Domino, from 1950....the tune is a variation on the traditional New Orleans tune Junker's Blues, which also provided the melody for Lloyd Price's Lawdy Miss Clawdy. Now, the guy known as the King of the Jukebox. Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five tore it up with hilarious story-songs. His guitarist Carl Hogan guitar has been cited by Chuck Berry as one of his main influences Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 : Ain't That Just Like a Woman 1946 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEqiWTb-UWA Julia Lee and her Boyfriends Gotta Gimme Whatcha Got 1946http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Pq98BQ7E7Bk The VE with Prehistoric rock.. THAT girfriend could sing! Julia Lee And Her Boyfriends..who just happened to be two legendary names of jazz-- Benny Carter and Red Norvo. No small wonder that she commanded such prime session men--Julia sang and played piano in her brother George Lee's band, which for a time also included Charlie Parker. So where did 'rock" really begin? 1947--Wild Bill Moore We're Gonna Rock Wild Bill Moore 1947 Rock the Joint: Jimmy Preston 1949 The VE with Prehistoric Rock, and the name itself, attributed to Clevland DJ Alan Freed, was taken from tenor sax man Will Bill Moore's "We're Gonna Rock" which showed up on his Moondog Show radio programs...also Jimmy Preston and Rock The Joint. Let's rock out today's VE with one more that George Thorogood latched on to, by a legend of country music who died before rock was born... Move It On Over Hank Williams 1947 Jack Guthrie: Oakie Boogie The Year was 1947. And like the legendary flying saucer that crash landed in Roswell, New Mexico, the alien music life form of rock and roll was taking shape with some help from country cousin Hank Williams, and right there Jack Guthrie and the western swing jam "Oakie Boogie, which Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock owes a debt to. Jack was the cousin of the seminal American music figure who would have been 100 years old this week. Woody introduced one element of what would become rock that we haven't touched on yet...the political and intellectual...soomething that was rare in popular music of his day...but as a folk singer, Woody could speak his mind, and he makes an obvious political statement in this song from 1940: Woody Guthrie: Jesus Christ Robert Wilkins; That's No Way To Get Along Pre Historic Rock on The VE....Woody Guthrie, Jesus Christ, and Revered Robert Wilkins, "That's No Way To Get Along..." rock rooted in bible stories....and that last one brings us to the half century mark this week of the British rock band that brought all the early influences together in an entirely new, original sound. Rolling Stones: Not Fade Away 50 years ago, the Rolling Stones played their first gig at The Marquee Club in London. This week, they posed outside thevenue and strongly hinted at a fiftieth anniversary tour. Not Fade Away. 20 years ago, let alone 50, who would have thought that would be The Rolling Stones legacy. To top off this VE exploration of Prehistoric rock, here is an evocative and epic song by another great interperter of the rock roots. From his 1990 album "Enlightenment," Van Morrsion sings of "The Days Before Rock And Roll, " and how those distant radio signals in the deepest night brought a brilliant new light into his young world. Van Morrison : In The Days Before Rock And Roll. And that's the VE. A true mystic poet, Van Morrsion always finds a way to say it for all of us. Party Favorz is back with volume 3 of the Ultimate Collection of the greatest Trash Disco tracks of all time. I've been running a bit behind because I noticed after the first volume, some of the transitions were misaligned once exported to file. This tends to be the case when I'm dealing with mixes over 2 hours long and I've been performing a multitude of tasks on my computer involving mastering, whether it be automated or manually. I have a super fast computer with an i7 3.2 GHz processor and 32 GB of RAM, so it can handle the workload. However, I find that I frequently need to flush my temp files and reboot the computer to dump the memory to prevent these mistakes from happening. Nevertheless, they still do. I'll likely need to go back and comb through volume 2 to ensure its integrity. This shouldn't be confused with some of the beats sounding like they're mismatched when in fact they're not. These are old songs from the days when they used live musicians to create the disco tracks; violins and all. Using today's technology to align the beats for a DJ friendly transition, makes it easier for folks like me. However, since these songs were created by real persons, timing is always off on the originals, which is where the automated beat correction comes into play. It usually creates a garage type sound that was common in the 90's when it aligns the beats adding an extra 1/8 to the beat. I like to call these dirty beats. There is one song by Carol Jiana "Hit 'N Run Lover" where the entire drums and percussion were so misaligned, you'd think the session players were novices. To fix that entire song, you'd literally need to isolate each sound and then recombine them, which would be time-consuming. I compared the original 12" with the Digital Visions edit and the same issue persists, even though the actual beats were aligned properly. It's a great song that's been reworked a multitude of times over the years, including a new vocal version by Carol herself. If it wasn't so important to the annals of Disco history, it would not have been included. Now that I have totally bored you with information you likely don't care about, it's time to dive back into the Disco scene. Before we do, I want to thank David B., Ludovic D., Stephane D., David J., Ignacio G., and Paul B. for their donations. A couple of these are duplicates because they donated more than once. This is the one where Kim, Zambo, and Brimstone discuss everything about what's new in pop culture, entertainment in the world and so much more. Apart from the usual banter, Katrina Law from Arrow and CBS show, Training Day stops by and The Peanut Gallery has Mr. Don Ray of Triton MMA. Enjoy.

It's hard to believe the Vietnam War came to an unsatisfying conclusion 40 years ago this week. Dr. Tom and both his special guests have personal experience with the era. Unity Institute® and Seminary senior Nhien Vuong Dougherty was born in Vietnam and brought to the United States by her parents at the fall of Saigon in 1975; she was 2 years old. First-year UI student Don Ray served with the U.S. Army in Saigon during the infamous 1968 Tet Offensive. Also, Dr. Tom flew medical evacuation helicopters in combat during 1971. Their experiences bring listeners personal stories only veterans and survivors of the unhappy conflict could provide. Do not miss this one. Share the link with friends and Vietnam veterans.
