Uncover the truth behind 'Greenwashing Lies' and how they mislead consumers. Join the fight against climate change with John Pabon's eye-opening insights. "Greenwashing" lies by governments, businesses, international organizations, and even celebrities mislead consumers and weakens efforts to take meaningful, effective action in the fight against climate change. That's the message from John Pabon, a Melbourne, Australia climate author and business advisor, who has just published a new book, “The Great Greenwashing: How Corporations, Governments, and Influencers Are Lying to You,” in an interview for The Lean to the Left Podcast. In fact, says Pabon, "greenspeak", misdirection, and "green scamming" are now more prevalent than ever as even businesses, organizations, and celebrities, who claim to support efforts to protect our environment actually are taking actions that contribute to the climate crisis that we all face."Those are the three tried and true ways that greenwashing happens," Pabon says. "So the first is all this marketing speak around being eco friendly, being green. So you'll see green packaging. They love to do that as if that means anything or saying, we, we care about the earth, but not backing it up with any real meaningful statistics." That's "greenspeak.""Misdirection is another," he says. "So look over here, not over here. Look at this cute picture of kids on the front of our sustainability report, but not the child labor we have going on in Bangladesh, right? Don't look at that part. So then that's another way they love to do that.""And the final way is green scamming. And this is the most insidious and probably the scariest part of greenwashing that I didn't even know was going on, but big cashed up organizations, usually the big dinosaurs like oil and gas, they'll actually fund front groups that on the surface look like they're doing something good for the planet, but really they're lobbying groups to throw people off the scent."Such groups, he says, discredit climate change, "posing as if they are scientists and expecting nobody to actually do the research and realize these aren't scientists. These are marketing teams pushing out BS statistics," he says. Here are some surprising conclusions shared by Pabon during the interview:The climate crisis is too serious for "kumbaya", "feel-good" claims about progress being made. "Converting people to actual action is the missing piece." He's disappointed in climate efforts of the Biden administration, saying "they've not had a strong a performance as one would assume those from the left hand side of the political spectrum would actually have had."To uncover greenwashing lies, consumers should research "green" claims before purchasing related products or supporting candidates.Consumers can make a big difference in the choices they make. "We're not talking about having to do everything all at once. You don't have to be a perfect environmentalist, just making these actions that move the needle in the right direction. That's good enough. There's plenty, there's billions of other people doing the right thing. You don't have to do it all."Some major car companies, which he declined to identify, are looking to the future and considering how they can diversify so they are not exclusively reliant on selling motor vehicles. Responsible businesses will do more than government to effectively combat global warming. Episode #84 John Pabon Great and inspiring conversation with John. We talked about saving the Earth! OK, let's face it, it's not the earth that really needs saving, it's all the things that live on Earth. Anyway, he has a much more positive view on the subject than I do, and it was a very refreshing conversation. There was also a bit of controversy, Ooooooh, everyone loves controversy! In his own words: I've spent two decades in the business of saving our Earth. After leaving my role at the United Nations, I traveled the world studying the impacts of sustainability first-hand in factories, on fields, and at Fortune 500s. That's given me a very unique perspective on what it takes to make a positive impact. I'm a globally recognized expert in sustainability with a mission to move from theory to practical strategies that help people and businesses confidentially make real impact. To get there, I share my message through books, consulting to businesses, and keynote speaking to audiences around the world. My global career has taken me from Los Angeles to New York, Shanghai to Seoul to Melbourne. I've had the privilege of working with the United Nations, McKinsey, A.C. Nielsen, and as a consultant with BSR, the world's largest sustainability-focused business network. A decade of experience living and working in Asia inspired me to found strategic communications firm Fulcrum Strategic Advisors with a mission to help companies, governments, and individuals capitalize on the benefits sustainability offers. I'm also a regular contributor to major publications such as CNN, EuroNews, and the ABC. I speak to an array of global audiences on issues of sustainability, geopolitics, communications, and societal change. I am the Program Director for The Conference Board's Asia Sustainability Leaders Council, a member of the United Nations Association of Australia, and serve on the board of advisors to the U.S. Green Chamber of Commerce. I am the author of “Sustainability for the Rest of Us: Your No-Bullshit, Five-Point Plan for Saving the Planet.” The book has been described as “…a foundational read for practical sustainability in the 21st century” and “…one of the best sustainability resources available to date.” I'm also excited to be helping consumers make smarter decisions through my second book, “The Great Greenwashing: How Brands, Governments, and Influencers are Lying to You,” out now. https://www.tiktok.com/@johnapabon https://www.johnpabon.com/ https://www.fulcrum22.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnpabon/ https://www.instagram.com/johnapabon/ https://www.instagram.com/@johnapabon Music for all episodes by Jon Griffin. Episode 126 of the Check Your Six podcast had a very unique aroma when Raul Pabon, with Smart Scoops, stopped by the GRP Studios for his recording. Raul is truly the example of a new business owner, he and his partners opened this in December of 2023 so his is still getting his feet wet(pun totally intended). We have seen some of the marketing they have been doing locally with road sights that tell exactly what the business does, "We Scoop Poop", so as you can imagine, this was fun. Raul is a fantastic young man and it was a pleasure having him in the studio having him walk me through, well not actually, more like guide me through the poop scooping business. They are doing their best to clean up this town, one yard at a time!! You can see more of what they do at their website, https://smartscoops.com/ and get the details about the process and services.

Sometimes, a melody can lead to a movement; this was the case with John Pabon's transformation from a music student to a beacon of sustainability. Our conversation with John casts a light on his pivot from the arts to political science, his work with the United Nations, and his ultimate venture into the consultancy world with Fulcrum Advisors. With John, we crack open the tough shell of greenwashing and peer into its core – where intention doesn't always align with action, and eco-friendly facades sometimes hide a less verdant truth. The discussion is an eye-opener on the sophisticated tactics companies employ to appeal to our greener senses, and it's a call to arms for transparency and accountability. We don't shy away from the hard questions, like the impact of influencers and the importance of adaptability in career paths that aim for a future where sustainability isn't a role but a foundation. The episode culminates with a message of hope and a reminder of the power of focused, individual actions. We share insights on balancing the scales of passion and skills against the weight of global challenges, and on the emotional journey of lifestyle changes. Wrapping up, we touch upon the importance of self-care and gratitude amidst the struggle for a better environment, encouraging listeners to embrace their contributions to the collective journey towards sustainability. Carly loves John's approach to hard topics and knows you will too. Guest Bio: John Pabon has spent two decades in the business of saving our Earth. In this episode of The Author's Corner, Robin sits down with John Pabon, sustainability expert and author of The Great Greenwashing. John shares the combination of frustration, stupidity, and hubris that inspired him to write and self-publish his first book, Sustainability for the Rest of Us: Your No-Bullshit, Five-Point Plan for Saving the Planet. Robin and John discuss his decision to write in his own voice, in a way that spoke to a mass audience, rather than the way he would normally speak to his peers in the sustainability sector. You'll also learn about the concept of "greenwashing:" a process in which companies and governments will wrap themselves in the language of sustainability, in an effort to distract people from the bad environmental practices they have in the background.Key Takeaways from This Episode:Why John chose to self-publish his first book, and the lessons he learned from that process. The goal of his new book is to help people understand the myths and misunderstandings surrounding sustainability. The positives (and negatives) of traditional and self-publishing, from John's experience. The impact that the private sector can have on sustainability. And much more...Resources Mentioned in this Episode:John's websiteJohn's LinkedInThe Great Greenwashing bookAbout John Pabon:John Pabon has spent two decades in the business of saving our Earth. Last episode my expert remarked that scientists might say the world is too far gone, and that we're beyond the tipping point with our planet. That got me thinking, and I sifted through my expert contacts to find one who could tell us if that's true or not. My guest today is John Pabon. John came over to the sustainability field two decades ago after leaving his position at the United Nations. Today he specializes in helping large corporations and governments get a better handle on the part they play and the ways they can improve. I wasn't even aware there was more to sustainability beyond the more hippie variety, but it's actually an extremely large and diverse field with a lot of greyish areas. John imparts a lot of knowledge, and also tells us about the ways that it's okay to come up short. Let's create a better future! In the third part of our discussion with John Pabon, Kim and Fulyana explore the tangled web of governance surrounding sustainability as well as hearing about John's upcoming book “The Great Greenwashing”. There has been such interest expressed in this series of podcasts and the topic with John that we will be returning to a […]
I've been wanting to do an episode on this subject for a VERY long time so I am delighted to be talking sustainability with John Pabon. We are all interested in sustainability and the environment but, for many of us, the message around these subjects are confusing, complicated and overall just massively disheartening. "The world is doomed", "there is no point doing X" or "UNLESS YOU GO VEGAN YOU'RE EVIL!!" are the types of messages we hear all the time but, if you have children, you probably would like to know what you can PRACTICALLY do to help.John is a globally recognized expert in sustainability. With more than 2 decades of experience in the "saving the planet business", and a whole host of impressive organisations and companies on his CV, he is THE guy to talk to about something like this.He is also the author of “Sustainability for the Rest of Us: Your No-Bullshit, Five-Point Plan for Saving the Planet.” The book has been described as “…a foundational read for practical sustainability in the 21st century” and “…one of the best sustainability resources available to date.” His second book “The Great Greenwashing,” is out now for pre-sale. And, of course, check out his website https://www.johnpabon.com/John and I discuss many things including; What, exactly, is sustainability? Sustainability is an important concept for businesses today, yet there is a lot of confusion about what it really means. People often think of sustainability as just protecting the environment, which is true to an extent. But there's more to it than that. It encompasses economic, social, and environmental aspects and involves finding ways to use resources in a way that meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.Sustainability is an umbrella term that focuses on creating a better future, both environmentally and socially. It encompasses steps to stop climate change, reduce water and natural resource misuse, as well as ensuring human rights, labor rights, animal rights, philanthropy, and charity are observed. Professionally this type of sustainability is referred to as ESG (environmental-social-governance). It is sometimes known by its other name: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).In this episode, John Pabon, a sustainability expert, covers the topic of sustainability and its importance for business owners. He explains why sustainability is a must-have for businesses and how to develop it in your organization.Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode:[02:28] John's journey and why he's so passionate about sustainability.[05:08] Three top tips for sustainability.[09:35] The correct definition of sustainability.[11:31] John's superpower skill sets that have helped him in his journey.[14:04] Why is niching down a disadvantage at times?[16:39] John's greatest fight with businesses and how he has navigated that.[26:10] John's greatest achievement in his career.
