Bob and Doug Mackenzie are back! And they are challenging the beer tax hike, in new commercials courtesy of Beer Canada. Writing in the National Post, Tasha Kheiriddin says that Canada's immigration policies are damaging the economy, citing findings from some of Canada's top bank economists, including Stéfane Marion, chief economist at National Bank of Canada, who state that Canada has fallen into “the population trap” in which “you don't have enough savings to stabilize your capital to labour ratio.” The Wedding, an immersive reception experience, is coming to The Cotton Factory next month – February 9th and 10th – and with it comes all the comedy and drama of two families coming together… and if you get your tickets, you're not just a member of the audience, you're a guest! The Canadian government is publicly naming 85 Chinese research institutions that “may pose” a threat to national security and sensitive research. The list also includes 12 Iranian and six Russian organizations that the Canadian government believes have ties to “military, national defence or state security entities.” Is this the perfect weather for the ice wine harvest, or is it a little much? Housing starts fell short in 2023 and it's “a real problem,” according to the Senior Director of Policy and Innovation at the Smart Prosperity Institute. Is Canada still “useful” in world affairs? Former Liberal Foreign Minister John Manley doesn't think so. The dog days of summer were particularly cruel this year. I mean, sure, there's a pretty good dog film in the form of Cujo, but that's only one small part of a very rocky landscape. Can the Pink Panther series get even worse? Yep. Can the Smokey and the Bandit series get even worse than that? We're almost done with 3D, thank god, but it's got a few more scars to leave. Sword and sorcery junk, post-apocalyptic dreck, and a teen sex comedy that's a real... well, you know. There are highlights. George Lucas throws a buddy a bone and we get an animated gem as a result. Peter Hyams does some moralizing. Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi get it on. Rodney Dangerfield has to stop getting it on if he wants to get rich. And Bob and Doug MacKenzie head to Elsinore Brewery for some Strange Brew. All this plus the Citizen Kane of teen comedies and Berlin Alexanderplatz? It must be August of 1983.

In this interview, Margo tells BCB host Channie Peters about this unique event of storytelling accompanied by world musician Doug MacKenzie. He plays an astonishing variety of instruments from Indian and other cultures around the globe. These delightful stories from the Buddha's time and place feature the Buddha in many animal and human forms. The Jataka Tales reflect the truth that daily life offers us countless opportunities to develop wisdom and compassion, generosity and loving-kindness. The stories are beautifully told by an accomplished storyteller who has translated many of the stories from their original Pali or Sanskrit language. The tales provide a window into an ancient culture, as well as wisdom from traditional Buddhist teachings on kindness and generosity. Margo McLoughlin, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, has studied Pali, the ancient language of the Buddha. Margo has been telling the Buddhist tales since 1991. She is a consultant with the Fetzer Institute for whom she has been gathering world tales of generosity for the past four years. The material is being used as tools for reflection and dialogue with several professional groups. Margo's stories can be found in CD and video formats on her website. The Bodhi Center is located at 6717 Marshall Road. Admission is by donation at the door to cover costs. Registration is encouraged at the Bodhi Center website since space is limited. Children are welcome. Credits: BCB host: Channie Peters; BCB studio tech, editor and social media publisher: Barry Peters.
