Who you gonna call? The Ghostbusters series has had its ups and downs since the iconic 1984 original, with each sequel bringing something new to the table—some loved, some controversial. But which one reigns supreme? In this episode of WN Movie Talk Podcast, we're suiting up, grabbing our proton packs, and diving deep into the Ghostbusters franchise as we rank all four sequels—from Ghostbusters II (1989) to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)!

“Switch me on.”When you think about it, the original Ghostbusters movie captivated a generation in a way that we usually reserve for franchises like Star Wars. Who would have thought that a big budget semi-horror comedy featuring a bunch of Saturday Night Live alums would become the kind of pop culture phenomenon that is still releasing films 40 years later, not to mention a parade of animated series, collectibles, video games, and more? And yet, that's exactly what happened! And perhaps a key part of that appeal was the central piece of equipment that the Ghostbusters outfitted themselves with: the proton pack. Essentially an “unlicensed nuclear accelerator” that they wear on their backs that allows them to “herd” ghosts into the equally fantastic traps (something that will perhaps be the focus of a future episode of Does it Fly?), the proton pack is as striking a visual as Star Wars' lightsaber or Star Trek's transporter. It's far from the only reason Ghostbusters has endured, but the millions of children of the 1980s who turned their school backpacks into ghost-fighting machines can't be wrong! At the heart of Ghostbusters is the fact that our heroes are all scientists, despite their shared interest in the paranormal. In a way, that's not too different from the dynamic of our brilliant hosts, who spend this special, spooky episode of Does it Fly? debating both the science and story logic of this beloved device. You can also watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? on our YouTube page. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! ProtonsYou can't wrap your head around a proton pack without first understanding the proton itself, which is simply a positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom. Wait, did we say “simply?” No, these aren't that simple at all (note how Hakeem says in this episode that “the word particle can mean different things in different contexts”). Find out why right here.Particle AcceleratorsAccording to Hakeem, the proton pack is essentially a particle accelerator. Let the International Atomic Energy Agency explain them to you far better than we can. But the key here is the concept of the cyclotron, first developed by Ernest Lawrence, and which even existed in a surprisingly portable form (pending energy use necessity, of course).Beta DecayWe admit, this one is tough to follow on its own. Fortunately, there are visual references that help us follow along.Let's just let Hakeem explain how it all ties together: “The Ghostbusters use positrons to power their cyclotron which accelerates their protons so they can use them to capture ghosts.” (phew)The Real Inspiration for GhostbustersTamara brings up how Dan Aykroyd was inspired to pursue the Ghostbusters concept by an academic article from The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research (which is absolutely real). We are pretty sure that the actual article in question can be read right here!SUGGESTED VIEWING It's almost unthinkable that anyone who has clicked on this episode hasn't seen the original Ghostbusters, which is truly a generational, all-time great movie. There's an entire franchise worth exploring beyond it, though. Here's a quick guide to watching them all in the appropriate order.Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989)The two movies that make up the bedrock of Ghostbusters canon. The first, is, of course, self-explanatory. Its sequel was seen as something of a disappointment upon release, but in the years since it's seen a critical re-evaluation from the general public. The first movie belongs to a unique category of high-concept genre comedies of the 1980s, which even had this not spawned a series of movies, a toy line, an animated series, and countless collectibles would have made it pretty unique. Others that played with the formula established here include Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Beetlejuice (which we did an entire episode on that you can watch right here).Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016)Unfairly maligned upon release for reasons we need not get into here, Paul Feig's complete reboot of the franchise  (it's set in a parallel universe from the first films) is better than you've heard. HoweverGhostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)These are essentially the belated Ghostbusters III and IV. As is the case with Ghostbusters sequels, your mileage may vary. For those of you who really want to dig deeper, though, you'd be surprised at just how cool (and even scary!) The Real Ghostbusters cartoon from the 1980s was. In particular, if you're looking for some spooky seasonal viewing, allow us to suggest the first season episode “When Halloween Was Forever” which feels like a genuine Ghostbusters movie condensed down to less than 30 minutes. WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?This isn't our first spooky rodeo, as we recently took a look at Beetlejuice to try and scientifically prove that demonic possession is a thing!Have you seen our awesome exclusive interview with the showrunner of Netflix's Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft yet? On episode 23 of Canon Fodder we bust some ghosts. The Ghostbusters universe is much more expansive than most people probably realize. What started off as a one-off movie that was supposed to feature an SNL-based cast ballooned into a franchise lasting over 35 years, with plenty more to come. We spend most of the episode talking about what's actually in canon, Ghostbusters 1, 2, and Afterlife. Once upon a time, the original animated show, The Real Ghostbusters, could have been considered canon, but not anymore. And that show does NOT age well. We have a blast figuring out where all of the fodder fits in, such as Extreme Ghostbusters, the 2009 video game based on an unproduced Ghosbusters 3 script, and of course the mostly unfunny 2016 Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. Plus, we tie Ghostbusters to the MCU and Caddyshack. Yea, it's a doozy. As always, we have food and drinks on the show related to our universe. This week we drink the I Ain't Afraid of No Bulls, fruited sour, from Bolero Snort and Crystal Head Vodka from Dan Aykroyd himself. There's also some real-deal Stay Puft Marshmallows (WalMart exclusive) which we don't actually eat, but we just had to have them.

Chris talks about how he called Josh right after watching the movie to decompress and share his thoughts about the movie. 36:35 Chris asks how many times we would have to watch the movie in order to catch all of the Mini Stay Puft Marshmallow men antics. In today's show, Kenny and Del review the 2021 sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife!   One of Kenny's favorite movies of all time is 1984's Ghostbusters!  When Kenny heard Jason Reitman, the son of the original director Ivan Reitman, was releasing a sequel to the beloved franchise in 2021 we knew this was one film we had to discuss.  Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the continuation of the original Ghostbusters, picking up after the events of 1989's Ghostbusters 2.   The film has no connection to the 2016 Ghostbusters Answer the Call, however, Reitman has said the 2016 Paul Feig directed film was one of his inspirations for this story.  The story centers around the Spengler family and their disconnectedness from society, while also providing a mystery behind what happened to Egon Spengler. Please join the Brothers as they take a journey into the franchise which inspired Kenny's love of movies.  1984's Ghostbusters was his first love of film, so will this sequel be the everlasting love letter he hopes will reignite his Ghostbuster flame, or will it just pale in comparison like an ex-girlfriend of years past.  So join us as we review Ghostbusters: Afterlife! Thanks for listening and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms!https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastTheme song "Loli'ana" written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano.   Listen to more of Kamuela's music on iTunes and https://kamuelamusic.com/.  Also, "Loli'ana" performed live at The Ko'olau Banquet Hall can be seen here https://youtu.be/YDJ1NNJgEiA  If you enjoyed our show, subscribe and check our new shows that drop every Friday.  Also, new this year, our non-routine Hot Topic show where we discuss what's hot in the movie world and our Anniversary Specials, which are 30 minute show that pay tribute to a movie celebrating a significant anniversary.

Halo Infinite is out! I've played it! The green boy is back in town! Anyway that doesn't matter, because we also watched Star Track: First Contact (1996), which takes up most of the time in this episode, and in Retro Corner, George is knocking out all da Marios: Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island. It was released as "Super Mario World 2" here, but we all know that's horseshit. It's like when they decided Edge of Tomorrow should be titled Live Die Repeat now. Nobody actually calls it that. Or remember when they renamed Lady Ghostbusters to "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call"? Dumb. Anyway, the Deus Ex video referenced often in this episode is Deus Ex: The Recut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUfZZbrXVAw Theme song by David Cassel Outro music: "Opium Tea" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Erik Laws normally joins the show to talk comic book adaptations, but a certain 1984 film is a favorite to many of us so he joins Erik Childress for a discussion of Jason Reitman's modern follow-up to his father's classic. Ghostbusters: Afterlife has drawn quite the division between those nostalgic for the original and critics who believe the fan service has reached a fever pitch. Has Reitman filled the film with so many easter eggs that it is nothing but a soulless trip down memory lane or is that a preemptive narrative that many could not get out of the way of when viewing the film. Both Eriks have their own thoughts on the film and delve into the criticism and whether or not it is unfounded.

This week we have a 2 man team with only Russ and myself but we were able to knock out another show as we jumped right into the main topic of the week: "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call" spoilercast. Did the 2016 Ghostbusters live up to the hype or will this be just another bad addition to the franchise? Does Nathan repeatedly bring up Xtreme Ghostbusters, just because? You bet I did. We go over the basic plot and what we loved and hated about the newest addition to the Ghostbuster franchise and a little past the half way point, we go on about what we've been playing, like Russ' monkey business and Nate's sad obsession with old. gaming hardware. --Nathan
