In advance of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board reviewing a landmark nomination for Seattle High School Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, a special episode of CASCADE OF HISTORY was broadcast live on SPACE 101.1 FM from the Memorial Wall at the stadium on the 78th anniversary of "VJ Day" - when WWII hostilities ceased on August 14, 1945. This broadcast was made as a public service to the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board, because the landmark nomination they will review on August 16 is sorely lacking in some of the most important history of Seattle High School Memorial Stadium. The landmark nomination - which is supposed to tell the story and provide relevant historical context for the stadium - is missing so many key details about the role that Seattle High School Memorial Stadium has played in the community since 1947. Joining host Feliks Banel for this live broadcast (to remedy these deficiencies) was series of knowledgeable guests who spoke out to help the Landmarks Preservation Board - and anyone else listening in to the live show or later to the podcast - to better understand the history of sports, 1962 Seattle World's Fair events, and notable musical performances that took place at Memorial Stadium over the past 76 years. Guests included World's Fair staffer Albert Fisher, who helped produce opening ceremonies for the fair at Memorial Stadium; Northwest sports historian David Eskenazi on the many sports milestones and legendary events that took place at Memorial Stadium; music historian and tour guide Eric Magnuson on the many concerts of local and national acts that took place at Memorial Stadium; and 98-year-old former World's Fair executive Louis Larsen (whose Class of '42 friends from Ballard High School - Christy Jull and Bill Knudtson - are listed on the Memorial Wall; both made the ultimate sacrifice in WWII). This LIVE broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY was originally presented at 7pm Pacific Time on Monday, August 14, 2023 via SPACE 101.1 FM and streaming live via space101fm.org from the Memorial Wall at Seattle High School Memorial Stadium at Seattle Center. We stand in deep respect for both the 1947 stadium and the 1951 wall, both of which honor the 800 Seattle Public Schools' alums who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country in WWII, and whose names are listed at that sacred spot. Special thanks to our guests, to producer Laura Scott, and to SPACE 101.1 FM program director Eric Zappa.

So you're trying to get pregnant or you're currently in the midst of pregnancy. It can be confusing, scary and lonely — and that's not getting into the beauty conversation of it all. However, we are a beauty podcast and we often get questions about how to create your pregnancy skincare/makeup/haircare routine: what to avoid, what's "safe," what treatments and ingredients are okay to partake in (or not). We have both a board-certified dermatologist and OB/GYN on the podcast to share their thoughts. While we recommend consulting your personal doctor, we are thrilled that both experts — who we interviewed separately — are aligned when it comes to what's okay to use and what you should avoid during pregancy. Dr. Laura Scott is a board-certified dermatologist and has she served as the Associate Director, Skin of Color Division at University of Miami, Dermatology. Dr. Sara Twogood board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist who practices at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and is the co-founder of Female Health Education, a website providing comprehensive information and education about pregnancy and gynecology topics. You'll learn about what ingredients are great to use during pregnancy, what myths you've probably heard passed down from generation to generation that need to be debunked, what data is available for the safety of specific actives, and why we shouldn't blame our skincare routines or why we may not be able to conceive. Plus: can you use microcurrent when pregnant? Can you get rid of stretch marks at home? Why should you avoid hot baths or hot tubs? Will long-term birth control affect your ability to get pregnant? Is exercise a concern during pregnancy? Any many more of your questions, answered. Former boxing world champion Heather Hardy – gives us an insight into the realities of making a living from boxing ahead of a huge night at Wembley Arena, which sees two women’s world title fights on the same bill. Hardy believes the sport still has much to do in terms of the gender pay gap and that the time has come for women to stop thanking men for opportunities to showcase their skills. Hardy says women need to co-headline big shows and admits her own career may be over. She lost her world title in her last fight and says she’ll never fight again for “a pay check that doesn’t make sense”. However, despite her own struggles in the sport, Hardy does believe boxing is a viable career choice for young girls and women that are coming through now. We also hear from promoter Eddie Hearn, who addresses Hardy’s concerns about pay and promotion for female fighters and the BBC’s boxing correspondent, Mike Costello, gives us his views on the pay gap and looks ahead to the night's action. Peebles and Mausi talk us through their big haul and explain how they’re hoping to inspire young girls and boys to take up the sport. We hear how long-covid has affected former world number three tennis player Grigor Dimitrov. He’s been speaking to the BBC’s Laura Scott after he contracted coronavirus back in June. December 14 | Episode 5 This episode of Explore with Lionel Birnie and Hannah Troop focuses on the TransAtlantic Way in Ireland featuring two riders who took part this year, Laura Scott and Simon Gill. The TransAtlantic Way is an unsupported ride that goes from Dublin to Derry (with riders choosing their own route for the first leg) before following the Wild Atlantic Way all the way round the west coast of Ireland finishing near Cork in the south of the country. Laura Scott has taken on self endurance rides, both supported and unsupported and in her interview with Hannah, she talks about how her attempt at the TransAm – which crosses the USA – got off to a disastrous start and how she had to ride through the pain barrier for another 2,500 kilometres before having to scratch. Her next big unsupported ride was the TransAtlantic Way in Ireland. She talks about what drew her into the world of endurance cycling, how she sets her targets and the ups and downs along the way. We also hear from her coach Dean Downing – former national criterium champion – about how to prepare for an endurance ride. And Adrian O'Sullivan, the organiser of the TransAtlantic Way, explains why he now describes his event as a ride rather than a race. Simon Gill – better known to listeners of The Cycling Podcast as Simon the Photographer – also rode the TransAtlantic Way and we hear his thoughts on the event recorded while on the road and with the benefit of hindsight. **Explore is supported by Rapha, Science In Sport and The Economist.** **RUNNING ORDER** **Part 1:** Laura Scott on her experiences in the TransAm and TransAtlantic Way featuring contributions from TransAtlantic Way organiser Adrian O'Sullivan and Laura's coach, ex-pro rider Dean Downing. **Part 2:** (from 1:10:00) Simon Gill's adventures round Ireland with a mostly unused tent. **THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS** **Rapha** support The Cycling Podcast all year and that support has enabled us to get the wheels rolling on series one of Explore. Raya and Stephen are reunited on the Podcast again, and carefully overlooking Raya's food-stained clothing, dive into the social and fun side of cycling once again. Today's big show topic is Ultra Endurance; that is, riding until you just can't go any further; and with that in mind, Show 11's guest is the brilliant eBay and Instagram star Laura Scott; the unashamed Queen of not getting off her bike. On top of that, an extended news section starts by taking actual news (and finding the cycling angle), and ends with an April 1st-worthy 'doping' story that leaves Stephen with an actual solution to the drug epidemic in pro-cycling. And as for the contents of Stephen's velominati-flaunting kitbag, the cycling style police have issued an urgent warrant for his arrest. Extra-marital affairs are not unusual - some studies have found that some 60 percent of married partners report having engaged in affairs. Some spouses do reconcile and recover from infidelity and may even report a stronger, closer relationship. There are some affairs however, where the exiting spouse already sees the marriage as over and in these case reconciliation is rare. For the victim or faithful spouse, the discovery of the affair comes as a brutal attack on what they often describe as a happy marriage. These exit affairs cut to the core, damaging self-esteem and self-confidence and they leave the victim playing catch up both emotionally and legally. So what can you expect if you discover your spouse is having an exit affair?Joining Mandy for this Conversation is Laura Scott, whose marriage ended abruptly when she discovered her husband's affair. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is probably best known for its medieval religious heritage and in the summer months pilgrims from all walks of life flock to the island and swell its community of 160 to over 650,000. But in the winter it's the birds that flock here, taking refuge on this holy land during their winter migration. Helen Mark arrives on Holy Island just as the birds do and learns about their unique relationship with this island. Bird Historian, Ian Kerr has been visiting the island for more than 30 years and knows of 318 species that have been recorded. He also knows the long and complex relationship the birds have with this landscape and the generations of islanders. Legend has it that St Cuthbert laid down rules for the protection of nesting Eiders, making him Britain's first conservationists - whilst in later centuries, islanders recruited Goldcrests to clear their cottages of spiders and flies. Laura Scott is a ranger at the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve which annually welcomes over half the world's population of pale bellied Brent Geese. They are attracted to the mudflats and the special grasses that grow there. Whilst the birds come for the special habitats that the island provides, they bring with them many gifts. For Rev David Peel, a United Reformed Church Minister and long-time birder, they are a reflection of God's beauty and design, offering moments of transcendence. For award winning Northumberland based writer Ann Cleeves, author of ITV's Drama Series 'Vera' and BBC's 'Shetland' series, the birds are an integral part of building a landscape and creating an atmosphere and Holy Island - a place that she first visited with her retired RSPB warden and keen birder husband Tim - is full of this rich bird life and atmosphere.
