Singer/Songwriter Ian Thomas talks about his biggest hit Painted Ladies (and why he no longer possesses his 1974 Juno as Most Promising Male Vocalist), his continued close ties to both his big brother Dave and his wider SCTV/Second City family, his cameo on Bob & Doug McKenzie's Great White North, touring with April Wine/Rush/Valdy/Beach Boys/Billy Joel, why everyone was told to ‘check their egos at the door' while recording 1985's Tears Are Not Enough, his interactions with Martin Short/John Candy/Rick Moranis/Eugene Levy/Paul Shaffer/Geddy Lee/Rik Emmett/Tony Bennett/Brian Wilson, having his songs covered by Santana/Manfred Mann/Anne Murray, and why that strange animal Gowan now owns some of his recording gear! Ian Thomas will be LIVE on Wed April 9th at The Rose Studio inside The Rose Brampton as part of their Stagedoor Stories series...full info at https://tickets.brampton.ca/ For everything Ian Thomas, please visit https://ianthomas.ca/ TORONTO LEGENDS is hosted by Andrew Applebaum at andrew.applebaum@gmail.com All episodes available at https://www.torontolegends.ca/episodes/ Learn more about your ad choices. In the twenty-third episode of Season 11: The Son of Cult Flicks, Kyle is joined for a one-on-one conversation with fellow podcaster Lee from Spro & Lee Take on the Academy as they discuss the irreverent nature and knowing stupidity of SCTV favorites Bob & Doug McKenzie as they become the Rosencrantz & Guildenstern of an unsuspecting Hamlet tragedy in the sketch turned film adaptation known as Strange Brew (1983).
The ICE boyos have brought a chill to Chicago, Aurora, and even the desert Southwest as Jesus Hitler starts making good on his promise of mass deportations. Round up the usual suspects. A little song and war dance for the TV cameras. “Dr. Phil” even got in on the act in Chicago. Shock and awe, baby. It works, for a while. But some folks just don't take kindly to being shoved around. Soon even the fanboys will find the price of admission to the Dingaling Bros-Barnum & Beelzebozo Circus ("There's One Born Every Minute!) just keeps going up, as honest immigrant workers vanish alongside the bad guys, citizens decline to take their jobs in agriculture, construction, manufacturing, food processing and service industries, and goods and services get more expensive and/or harder to find. But never fear. We'll be annexing Canada! And Greenland! And the Sudetenland (whoops, wrong fascists, never mind). The Circus will roll on a Road of Bones until the world is under One Big Red White and Blue Tent (handmade by skilled artisans in border internment camps)! While you await your own personal invitation to assist the authorities with this project (and their inquiries) you might as well listen to the latest All-American Episode of — yes, yes, yes — Radio Free Dogpatch. Could be the last one. You never know who's lending us an ear, or why. • Technical notes: RFD favors the Ethos mic from Earthworks Audio; Audio-Technica ATH-M50X headphones; Zoom H5 Handy Recorder; Apple's GarageBand, and Auphonic for a wash and brushup. The trailer theme from "Fort Apache" comes from YouTube, as do Rick's conversations with Major Strasser and Sam in "Casablanca." Bob and Doug McKenzie say "Good day" from SCTV's YouTube page. The drum-heavy martial music (by Gregor Quendel) and “Out of Step” are both courtesy of Zapsplat. The Mescalero Apache tribe's take on a member's run-in with an ICE agent can be found here. The Guardian reports on a Navajo experience. The Associated Press covered immigration raids in Chicago. At The Atlantic Mark Leibovich had some fun visiting Greenland, soon to be our 52nd state. And at the New Republic Matt Ford shredded the pestilential ordure dropped on birthright citizenship.

Strange Brew is a strange comedic experience that must be seen to be fully understood. This film was born from a recurring sketch on the Canadian version of SNL, called Second City TV, in the same way that Wayne's World or the Blues Brothers started as sketches on SNL. The film stars Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as Bob and Doug McKenzie, two tocque wearing, beer swilling, "hosers" who mistakenly get embroiled in a crime plot. Definitely a must watch. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lunchtime-movie-critics/message
What voice occupies the most space in your brain? For those of us it's Mel Blanc -- the man of a thousand voices -- who gave voice to dozens of characters in the classic Looney Tunes (and many others). Bugs Bunny? Check! Daffy Duck? Check! Foghorn Leghorn? Check! And after Looney Tunes ended their initial run Mel simply shifted gears, working for other animators and founding his own advertising business. When he died, Warner Brothers paid tribute with a touching poster showing all the major Looney Tunes characters standing behind a lone microphone, heads bowed, with the caption "Speechless". As always find extra clips in the comments and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Mel Blanc? Mel did so many character voices it's hard to keep track -- so we thank some intrepid YouTubers for doing some supercuts to help us along!https://youtube.com/shorts/Ret4usxxKTE?si=FmUpvhai1dOEF86n Mel branched out in the 1950s by recording novelty songs in character voice. Daffy's Rhapsody is peak Mel.https://youtu.be/qxjU8JJEuSM?si=K0c2W3ebKDDkNwB3 Late in his career Mel made an unexpected and welcome cameo as the father of Bob and Doug McKenzie in Strange Brew. Happy New Year! To kick of 2024 we're reviewing Disney's Brother Bear (2003), the story of a human learning to be nice to animals by being forced to live as one. This is low-key a stone age movie – it's set in Beringia during the Pleistocene, but other than some mammoths and glaciers, it doesn't shove its stone-age-ness in your face. Happy Holidays from Randy and Steve! Instead of a single artist this week, we're going to dip into a little holiday comedy that will bring a smile to your face. Allan Sherman? Check! Elmo and Patsy? Check! Adam Sandler? Check! Doc Mo She (???) Check!!! You get the picture. And you also get our thanks for letting us be part of your holidays this year. As always, find extra cuts in the comments (and these are gems) and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Holiday Humor? Jeff Foxworthy was a titan of standup comedy back in the 1990s and as all entertainers do, he adapted his shtick to the holidays and issued his version of the 12 Days of Christmas -- adding his "redneck" flavor to the proceedings. https://youtu.be/h8ISVIOgPJA?si=3yR6c1r-ARhM30UG We love Allan Sherman here and one of his best parodies was his take on the 12 Days, featuring some of the cheesier gifts of the moment. https://youtu.be/DgrkqDJFQoo?si=P3dWLQc1XKLJil-T Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis have created many fine comic characters, but none more beloved than those hosers from the Great White North, Bob and Doug McKenzie. Their take on 12 Days has a distinctly Canuck feel! https://youtu.be/c3aCw-RurOk?si=KQq8pBgYaZi0NDKW If there was an all-time Christmas novelty tune, Elmo and Patsy's "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" would surely be in the mix. A folk duo from Marin County, Elmo and Patsy cut this tune for fun, but it soon found its way onto radio playlists -- it was different, it was funny, and it was FCC clean! For DJs that was a Christmas miracle! https://youtu.be/MgIwLeASnkw?si=x1M2atIIojTp3VKl You don't usually associate Psychobilly/Roots wild man Mojo Nixon with Christmas tunes, but he weighed in with a naughty disc (Horny Holidays) back in 1992 and it had his great read on "Mr. Grinch"!https://youtu.be/A1YVehEGG6E?si=kFpqbEns4eQ0IQkJ The Christmas Jug Band is made up of some of the finest Marin County musicians and they come together once a year for a few fun and popular holiday concerts. They can handle the traditional holiday tunes -- and they can deliver this, a fun little ditty about Santa losing a prized possession!!https://youtu.be/D9zli5IC6qE?si=lWtM5I_OIDYjtD4- We always leave room for some Hanukkah humor, and it's getting easier to find each year as a new generation of Jewish humorists takes over. The absolute icon of the genre is Adam Sandler's Hanukkah Song and here it is in all its SNL glory. https://youtu.be/KX5Z-HpHH9g?si=_AwmyvJ0035RHGDK Tom Lehrer wrote some of the best satirical songs ever, but his initial career was brief. So it was a delight for fans when his box set contained a few new tunes, including "I'm Spending Hanukkah in Santa Monica"! https://youtu.be/R_3FjHEbdhc?si=uUUf3gGxy7XF6bIs Hanukkah Hip Hop? Of course we've got you covered! We saw a video of this years ago at a Dr. Demento lecture -- it's Doc Mo She, The Hanukkah Homeboy, letting you know what he's all about. https://youtu.be/Er8a7gOPe5Q?si=qNlRPZwWLLKIbtIj

Merry Christmas 2022! The Christmas Day episode has become a tradition and launches season five of the Food Afield Podcast. This one is pretty special, I loved recording and editing it for you. With me this week, in the living room of the strawbale farmhouse, is Kevin Kossowan, the creator of the award-winning web series, From the Wild. We thought it would be fun to go back in time and re-watch some of the old FTW episodes together and record our comments. Kevin is almost at the one-hundred-episode mark of his show, so we knew it was time to reminisce and record some commentaries on the From The Wild episodes that I've been a part of over the past 10 years. To do this, we go back all the way to episode eleven of season one, "Tin Foil and Matches". The beginning of the episode is a little rough, as I get an insane scratching in my throat and Kevin schools me on not being able to pause these particular episodes. Pure retro Bob and Doug McKenzie. It's all there, with the curses bleeped. So, have a laugh at my expense. Happy New Year! 5q1zztQjH8diqNPHV0sxSomething new! We've launched a YouTube channel... "John Schneider's Wild Life". If you're a child of the eighties, you'll remember Rick Moranis. He was one of the biggest comic stars of the era, with iconic roles in GHOSTBUSTERS I & II, HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS and many more. But, somewhere around the mid-nineties, Moranis seemed to drop off the map, vanishing from sight, only returning for the occasional voice role in things like Disney's BROTHER BEAR. In our latest edition of WTF Happened to This Celebrity, we try to figure out why Moranis seemingly abandoned his thriving Hollywood career. It turns out that Moranis simply decided to focus on things that were more important to him (family). We dig into this as well as his career origins on SCTV, where he and co-star Dave Thomas famously created the beer-swilling Canucks, Bob & Doug McKenzie, before hitting the big time with a feature film (STRANGE BREW) that remains a cult classic. From there, Moranis' career was on fire, with him taking over for John Candy as Louis Tully in GHOSTBUSTERS, before becoming an unlikely (and famous) leading man in his own comedies, including HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS (and its sequel HONEY, I BLEW UP THE KID), LITTLE GIANTS, PARENTHOOD, and more.
