It may not seem like it, but everything in this universe is connected in all kinds of unseen ways. Humans have always known that chaos is a capricious and fickle thing, something that can show up when you least expect it…i find this aspect of history fascinating. There's the butterfly effect, the concept that a butterfly flapping its wings in China will set off a complex domino effect in the atmosphere that somehow results in a low-pressure wave blasting from Africa across the Atlantic causing a hurricane in the Caribbean. That doesn't really happen…it was a metaphor created by a meteorologist and mathematician named Edward Norton Lorenz in 1963 when he discovered that a miniscule change in atmospheric conditions ---he ascribed a value as tiny as 0.000127—could make an enormous difference down the road …this shows why it's so hard to forecast the weather…a little difference can add complexity and instability to a system. Remember that “treehouse of horror” episode from “The Simpsons” where homer accidentally turns a toaster into a time machine? ...he travels into the past where he manages to screw up the future multiple times by making the tiniest mistake. This is based on a 1952 short story by Ray Bradbury entitled “A Sound of Thunder” …a man named Eckels goes back in time and kills a dinosaur…when it returns to the present, everything is different. We hear about “black swan” events, a random thing that no one expects or could have predicted, yet it happens…and suddenly, everything changes. Covid-19 was an example of that…whatever spawned the virus—bats, infected animals in a wet market, a lab leak—started as something very, very small but ended up changing the lives of virtually everyone on the planet. We can also apply this sort of investigation to the world of music…if you pick a topic or thing, you can often trace it back to something that illustrates the wonderful and awful randomness of the universe. In this excellent sci-fi short storyby Ray Bradbury, a hunter named Eckels pays $10,000 to a time machine safari service to bag the ultimate trophy. The company guarantees his safety but not his return...and sets strict rules so as not to upset the balance of nature in the past...which may affect the present in terrible ways. In a career spanning more than 70 years, Bradbury inspired generations of readers to think, dream, and create. A prolific author of short stories and close to 50 books, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The sign on the wall seemed to quaver under a film of sliding warm water. Eckels felt his eyelids blink over his stare, and the sign burned in this momentary darkness: TIME SAFARI, INC. SAFARIS TO ANY YEAR IN THE PAST. YOU NAME THE ANIMAL. WE TAKE YOU THERE. YOU SHOOT IT. Warm phlegm gathered in Eckels' throat; he swallowed and pushed it down. The muscles around his mouth formed a smile as he put his hand slowly out upon the air, and in that hand waved a check for ten thousand dollars to the man behind the desk. “Does this safari guarantee I come back alive?” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hmphaudiobooks/support
Shawn Eckles is a touring guitarist and songwriter and guitarist/vocalist for "Andy Frasco & The UN," a Colorado based harmonic funk and rock band.
Nicole Eckels began her career as a makeup artist and eventually moved into corporate sales. After a stint in San Francisco, Eckels decided she needed a more challenging outlet. In 2006, she flew to Australia where she found her “true calling.” Shopping for bath and body products in a Sydney department store, Eckels was frustrated that she couldn't find what she was looking for and quickly realized there was a huge gap in the market. A spirited entrepreneur at heart, Glasshouse Fragrances was launched with a spark of imagination and the firm belief in the power of fragrance to transform the everyday. Today, Glasshouse Fragrances is a leading brand in the Australian fragrance market and has expanded its product offerings to include eau de parfum, body lotion, shower gel, bar soap, fragrance diffusers and more. Eager to bring her premium brand of electrifying scents to the U.S., Nicole is back in the States and launched Glasshouse Fragrances North America in the summer of 2021. In less than a year, the brand is being showcased in major retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Saks, and Bloomingdale's - as well as influential online platforms and independent doors across the country. Interviewed by Mortimer Singer.

Carla Eckels, Director of Cultural Diversity for News and Engagement at KMUW, joins Jo Lynn in Studio 2501 to discuss the Mountain of Media, and the impact the pandemic had on the creation and distribution of media.
After hitting it big in Australia, Glasshouse Fragrances is testing out the U.S. market. The company makes luxury candles among other high-end products, and since launching in 2005, has become one of the biggest candle companies in Australia. Now, it is focused on international expansion after launching in the U.S. last year. It is currently available in over 1,200 retail locations in the country, and has expanded to body washes, soaps and diffusers. Founder Nicole Eckels joined the Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about how she built the brand and her strategy surrounding the U.S. expansion. “Scaling to the U.S. was very difficult because we have grown a very big business for our category in Australia,” she said. “And it took all of our resource just to supply that [Australian] market and to serve as that market.” Indeed, over the last 15 years Eckels has been trying to perfect her Australian business. In the early days, she was doing everything from scratch. She had a background in sales, but not so much in manufacturing. “It really was a matter of trial and error,” she said -- figuring out how to make the right products and get them in the right hands. “It was really really tough in the beginning,” she said. But now, she said that the timing is right and it's time for Glasshouse to bring its products to the U.S. Eckels is doing this by establishing an online presence -- both direct-to-consumer as well as on Amazon. She is also seeking out distribution from independent retailers. “We're not trying to just be everywhere and get mass distribution right away,” she said. Still, there's a lot of work to be done. For one, she is still building out Glasshouse's brand presence in the States. With that, she's trying to find the right retail partners. For a luxury brand, she said, it's a difficult balance -- and that's what she's figuring out now. “We are a luxury brand,” she said. “We don't want to be everywhere but we don't want to be too difficult to find either.”

Today's guest is touring guitarist and songwriter, Shawn Eckels. He's perhaps known best in the Colorado scene as the longtime touring guitarist in Andy Frasco & The U.N. (Note: Andy Frasco was on episode 43 of this podcast, and their day-to-day manager, Brody Danger was on episode 9 and 57). Aside from his work with the U.N., Eckels has been making a name for himself as a touring artist since the 90s when he traveled the country with his Springfield, Missouri based group, Speakeasy. That band played the first Wakarusa Festival and toured with the likes of Umphrey's McGee and JJ Grey & Mofro. He also recently started a power trio with Colorado mainstays Todd Smallie (Derek Trucks, JJ Grey & Mofro) and Shaun Gilmour. In our conversation, we chat about his experiences on the road and his collaborations as a songwriter. For Season 8 of the podcast, I'm focusing on one of my greatest passions: business! I've had my own business since 2012 and entrepreneurship is a pursuit I devote a tonne of time, energy and focus to - whether it's growing my own business, or mentoring others in theirs. In this season, I'll be taking you behind the scenes in my business - as well as interviewing business owners I respect enormously. In this episode, I share the first interview with leading entrepreneurs... Nicole Eckels is an entrepreneurial veteran. She is the co-founder of the now household-name-brand Glasshouse Fragrances, which she started 15 years ago. She is also a firecracker of energy and I LOVED interviewing her. It became very clear to me while talking to her that Nicole has not even gotten started yet... In our conversation, Nicole shares: How the brand came from geographical arbitrage Her experience of creating a category in Australia How she secured an investor for her start-up - and needed some creative forecasting to do so! How she undertook a full rebrand this year, and in doing so doubled the number of products in the range The business BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) she's working towards Why she has deliberately contained the brand to Australia until now How she grew revenue 50% year on year for five years (seriously, wow) The difference between “bleeding edge” and “cutting edge” - and how you don't want to be bleeding edge (like I was in my first business!) How the brand has managed to have such incredible longevity in what is now a saturated market Why she'll seek out mentors for the rest of her life The scariest part of entrepreneurship for her How she navigated landing in Australia as a single mother and starting her business Her genius (and no BS!) tip to know who to hire next How the solution to problems is often to just “get in your helicopter” After 15 years of a successful business partnership, what her golden rule is for partners I so hope you enjoy this conversation. Vogue Australia’s associate digital editor, Lucie Clark, chats to Nicole Eckels, the founder and CEO of Australian-based home and personal fragrance brand, Glasshouse Fragrances. New York-born and raised, the beauty and fragrance aficionado launched Glasshouse Fragrances in 2006 after moving to Australia and experiencing an unsuccessful shopping trip for a scented candle. In this episode, Nicole discusses how she went from idea to fully-fledged brand, including learning how to make candles in her kitchen, and why staying authentic, listening to her gut instincts, and being okay with making mistakes, has helped her build her brand into the success it is today. In episode thirty eight of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts sits down with the founder of Glasshouse Fragrances, Nicole Eckels.Born in New York and eternally fascinated by the transformative powers of beauty and fragrance, Nicole Eckels’ early experiences in makeup artistry, cosmetics sales and in corporate have given her a really unique and very powerful understanding of what women want. Nicole moved to Sydney in 2005, thinking she’d spend no more four years in Australia. On arrival, she visited a David Jones fragrance counter looking to replace a scented candle that she had brought over from New York with her. Alarmed by the lack of options, Nicole set out to fill the gap and succeeded in brining Glasshouse Fragrances to market in only 12 months. This timeframe would be remarkable for anyone in business, but it’s important to note that Nicole was also in an entirely new country. She mentions in this interview that while learning about Australian culture and even locating retailers was a challenge, the change in scenery also made her fearless- which is exactly how Nicole came across during this conversation. She’s resolute, she’s tenacious and she’s brave. Glasshouse Fragrances have experienced growth in excess of 50% year on year since more or less the day they launched, and while Nicole really did create an entirely new category here in Australia, she actually credits a lot of that growth to market competition, telling me that brands can’t exist without it. In this conversation, Nicole and Gemma discuss the difference between developing fragrances for candles in comparison to Glasshouse Fragrance’s new collection of eau de parfums, the power of timing in business, and the responsibility that comes from knowing complete strangers associate your work with some of the most important moments in their lives. The fun thing about bad movies is that you can laugh at how terrible they are and that's what we would categorize A Sound of Thunder (film) as ... oh wait, did we just give our rating too early? Meh, oh well. Hopefully you'll still stick around for the fun at just how terrible A Sound of Thunder is, how unmoving the A Sound of Thunder movie cast is, and finally, our overall A Sound of Thunder review. On your marks, get set ... hopefully you haven't left yet ... go! Differences Between A Sound of Thunder Short Story and Film There are several differences between the A Sound of Thunder film and short story (written by Ray Bradbury). Some of the subtle differences that didn't impact how terrible the movie turned out included: Eckels steps on the butterfly in the short story, while his partner in the film, Middleton, was the one who stepped on it (Middleton was not in the short story) The short story has the safari team go back in time to shoot a Tyrannosaurus Rex, while the film has the safari team go back to kill an Allosaurus (while the film had terrible graphics, it would not have mattered which type of dinosaur was used) Some of the HUGE differences that did impact how terrible the movie turned out included: The short story is about 10 pages long and the film is an hour and forty minute movie - so why does this make the film terrible? This short story was NOT meant to be dragged out into a new story as a film, or at least the one the filmmakers gave us. Still, we think filmmakers need to be cautious on adapting a short story like this into a full, featured-length film. The science in this movie seemed a bit odd. Granted we don't know how the future would change if someone was able to travel back in time and alter future events, and while the idea of time waves wasn't a terrible way to slowly change the present time (still not good, in our opinion) ... the "changes" that happened didn't make sense to us. We get random changes to certain types of vegetation as well as animals (evolutionary changes), but yet nothing happens to the humans until the final time waves are occurring? In addition, what was up with the character of Rand turning to a humanoid cat-fish? We were baffled, but also laughed hysterically at the same time :) Politics are discussed in the short story, and is actually one of the bigger topics the characters mention. However, was the topic of politics discussed in the movie? NOT AT ALL. It's actually one of the biggest things that change as a result of a butterfly being stepped on in the short story - instead of the moderate and gentler politician being elected, a fascist politician had risen to power. YIKES! But, that's an actual interesting part of the story! (and again, this was nowhere to be seen in the film) Essentially, there's a better story in the short story itself than there is in the film. Franchise Pictures: A Fraudulent Production Company $80 million was budgeted for this film; however, Franchise Pictures went under investigation by the FBI for fraudulently inflating their budgets on their films. This all happened around the time A Sound of Thunder was being developed. As a result, the real budget came down to $30 million as that is all that the investors could provide for the film. Essentially, Franchise Pictures went out of business during post-production of this movie, surprise surprise! One of the worst graphics we've seen in a film As the amount of funding and actual budget went down, the computer graphics in this film were crazy bad! Words cannot describe how many effects were done terribly. Since words cannot describe it, maybe this clip of the Allosaurus can give you an idea of the quality of computer graphics infused in this film... If you plan to camp in Bayfield County this summer, now is the time to start your research. On this episode of Bayfield County Wild, Director of Bayfield County Tourism, Mary Motiff, gives listeners all the tools to start researching Bayfield County’s 30-plus campgrounds. Co-host Nancy Christopher talks with Dede Eckels about her family’s legacy in the Bayfield Peninsula Arts movement and Mary ends the episode with a round-up of great events in February and a preview of what to expect in March. Camping This Summer? Start planning now. Mary says the tourism department has three great tools to help visitors research their favorite campgrounds. First, the TravelBayfieldCounty.com website has a graphic link to an interactive map on the home page that can help you locate campgrounds and visualize where they are in relation to the communities throughout Bayfield County. If you know what campground you are looking for, the website also has a business directory that is searchable by name, by area, or by topic. The listings have descriptions and contact information for each campground including links to their websites. Plus, Mary’s office has just updated its camping brochure which lists all of the campgrounds in the area by type (County, Municipal, Private, National Park Service, US Forest Service). You can choose from very rustic, wilderness-type camps that you’ll find on the Apostle Islands or full-service campgrounds with all the amenities like at Legendary Waters Resort & Casino. If you are interested in reserving campsites with the national park system, reservations can be made now at recreation.gov or wait until April to reserve sites at County campgrounds. Call 715-373-6125 to have a brochure mailed to you today. Eckel’s Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery Dede Eckels and Pete Skora are the owners of Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery. The family business was started by Dede’s dad, Bob Eckels, and Glenn Nelson in 1960. Then called Eckels Pottery, the studio was affectionately nicknamed “the Pot Shop.” The building was moved to Bayfield in 1962, where it remains today. Bob Eckels was hired by Northland College to start an arts department. A potter, sculptor and jeweler, Eckels was a key player in the growth of the arts movement on the Bayfield Peninsula. He was deeply involved with the Bayfield Chamber, started the Tri-State Art Fair (now the Bayfield Festival of Arts) and helped start the Bayfield Artist Guild. He also established an arts apprenticeship program which drew students from all over the country. He ran the shop until his death in 2004. Dede followed in her father’s steps, becoming a talented potter and owner of the gallery. For more than 40 years, she has made functional, one-of-a-kind pieces and is most known for her signature wildlife and Northwoods imagery. Dede is always experimenting with new glazes and techniques while working with porcelain clay and she describes the process for us in enough detail to give us a true sense of how much work goes into each piece. Dede loves to create very involved surfaces that actually become small paintings on functional pottery. After an initial firing in the kiln and further artistry, the piece undergoes a second firing before it is finally finished. When Dede married her husband, Pete, the gallery underwent a major change - the couple started to invite other artists to showcase their work in the gallery. No longer just pottery, the gallery now includes jewelry, garden sculptures, wood carvings and hand-blown glass, so the name was changed to Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery. Every summer, Dede and Pete open their studio during Arts Week in Bayfield (the week prior to the Festival of Arts in July) to teach the public the Raku technique of how to decorate, glaze and fire pottery that they can actually take with them when they leave that day. Raku was a process originated by Korean potters. It was later adopted by the Japanese to make Raku cups for their tea ceremonies. In the 1950s and 60s, Raku was “Americanized.” Dede loves the Raku process because its results are immediate, turning clay into a beautiful piece of pottery in just two hours. Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery is located on the south end of the Bayfield city limits. You can’t miss it because there is a giant stoneware jug, weighing two tons, out front. For more information about the gallery, you can visit the new website at Eckelspottery.com. Fragrance aficionado Nicole Eckels launched Glasshouse Fragrances in 2006 with a spark of imagination and a belief in the power of fragrance to transform the everyday. Since it's launch nearly a decade ago, Glasshouse Fragrances has quickly grown to become a leading brand in the Australian fragrance market. Nicole was born and raised in New York and began her career as a makeup artist in SAKS Fifth Avenue. After a stint in San Francisco in corporate business and sales, Nicole decided she needed a more challenging outlet. She flew to the sunny shores of Australia with her son, looking for a sea change. It was in Australia that she found her 'true calling'. I really loved this conversation with Nicole as we discussed how she found her own brilliance. Some of the nuggets included discussion around: -Overnight success is actually a decade -Working hard to maintain a leadership position -Considering outcomes not just from a financial basis but also from the longer lasting effect it has on people and business -How luxury is beauty and how we cannot create excellence without beauty Listen in and enjoy

Nicole Eckels, founder of Glasshouse Fragrances - one of Australia’s leading fragrance empires for the past ten years. I met Nicole recently when she was presenting at an event I attended. Her story is inspiring. Nicole Eckels moved to Australia in 2005 from New York, craving a sea change and new lifestyle for herself and her son. Searching Sydney Nicole was on the mission to find a new candle to replace a beloved candle she had previously purchased in New York City . She walked into David Jones – a high end department store with a reputation for the finer things in life What she didn’t plan on was walking out of David Jones unsatisfied. There was nothing that was good quality or locally made. In this episode I describe Nicole's startup story so we can learn from her experience. As always there is a full transcript over on my website www.healthynumbers.com.au If you have any questions about getting started in your own business please email me directly at ingrid@healthynumbers.com.au What actions will you take today?
