Winter Study at Isle Royale National Park has a decades long history, but just a few scientists ever get the chance to spend time on this isolated archipelago in Lake Superior. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with one of those fortunate ones, Johnathan Pauli, Professor in the Department of Forest & Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin Madison. From tracking foxes and martens to unraveling a centuries-old survival story, Johnathan shares how studying this wilderness in winter reveals secrets a summer visitor would never experience. Join us for a conversation about science, survival, and what makes Isle Royale National Park a critical refuge for wildlife.Key Takeaways:Winter Study at Isle Royale has been going on for over 60 years, originally launched to monitor moose and wolf populations and now expanded to include other animals such as martens, foxes, and snowshoe hares.Winter presents extreme challenges and rich insights, including long days in deep snow, cold exposure, and tracking animals over miles of off-trail terrain.Snowshoe hares follow a 10-year boom-and-bust cycle, which helped explain the survival story of Angelique Mott in 1845, when she struggled to trap hares during a population crash.Isle Royale functions as a modern-day “refugium,” because it is more buffered from human development and invasive species, making it an ideal site for long-term conservation and research.Notable Quotes:“Winter is a period of nutritional and resource deficits.  It's a really important time to study these winter-adapted organisms.”“I love to say that there's no anonymity in winter.”“Refugia is something near and dear to my heart. These islands, Isle Royale and the Apostle Islands, really represent these interesting test beds for the concept of refugia.”“It's really important work. It's really hard work. But it's also really exciting. There's a lot of complexity of emotions you have while you're skiing these trails.”“Sometimes what you see in the tracks can be almost as exciting as seeing some of these critters in person.”Resources:Jonathan Pauli's Research Group – Learn more about his work at UW–Madison:https://pauli.russell.wisc.edu/Isle Royale National Park – Explore the park and its natural history: https://www.nps.gov/isro/index.htmApostle Islands National Lakeshore – Discover another key research site: https://www.nps.gov/apis/index.htmConnect With Us:Website: https://nplsf.org/podcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/NationalParksOfLakeSuperiorFoundationLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/national-parks-of-lake-superior-foundationSponsors:Cafe Imports – Supporting environmental sustainability in coffee-growing regions since 1993.  Learn more at https://cafeimports.com.National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation – Support vital projects by donating at: https://nplsf.org/donateBe sure to tune in to this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast to hear Jonathan Pauli's firsthand stories of survival, science, and what Isle Royale reveals in the silence of winter.

As the calendar runs down on the current session of Congress, there are a number of pieces of legislation that would involve or possibly impact the National Park System if they find their way into an omnibus lands bill that gains passage before the session adjourns.   While we haven't seen exactly what might find their way into an omnibus lands bill, among the candidates are legislation that would turn Chiricahua National Monument into a national park, one that would create a “designated operating partner” to oversee the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, and another that calls for a Benton MacKaye National Scenic Trail feasibility study.   There's also pending legislation that would approve expansion of Big Bend National Park by about 6000 acres, one that would transform Apostle Islands National Lakeshore into Apostle Islands National Park and Preserve,  and one that, if passed, would forbid any official wilderness designation to be bestowed on Big Cpress National Preserve.   We're going to take a look at the Big Bend, Apostle Islands, and Big Cypress measures today with Bob Krumenaker, who, during his 40+ years with the National Park Service, was superintendent of both Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Big Bend National Park and served a stint as acting superintendent of Everglades National Park, which adjoins Big Cypress National Preserve.

By 2000 the formally became a duo act and moved to Dublin Ireland, where with the support of musician Damian Rice, the talented pair participated in the renowned Oxegen music festival in Ireland, where they attracted significant attention. From the beginning, their reputation as killer musicians - Rodrigo with the faster-than-lightning lead guitar and Gabriela with her unique, rhythmic, strumming-and-drumming style - started to spread across the country. The high-energy international duo's music harnesses the flash, power, and speed of death metal filtered through the passion, soul, technique, and discipline of nuevo flamenco. Their showy, emotional sound is marked by Quintero's syncopated, hooky, percussive rhythms and rapid-fire strummed vamps framing Sanchez's incendiary, melodic, single-and dual-string leads. Following a successful live album in 2004, their debut self-titled studio album, produced by John Leckie of Radiohead and Stone Roses fame, was released by Rubyworks in February 2006 and charted at Number One on the Irish national charts, keeping the Arctic Monkeys off the top spot. Having established themselves in their adopted home, the duo started to spread their magic across the rest of the world. They headlined the Jazz World stage at Glastonbury in 2007, which was broadcast live on BBC TV. To that end, Obviously finds the band examining such complex matters as gender inequality (on “Being a Woman”) and the monumental challenges faced by younger generations (on “Making Do”), shaping each track with a profound intentionality and ineffable mastery of melody and groove—a process Price refers to as “putting these messages into three and a half minute snippets, dropping whatever truth we can and hoping it's the type of thing that people want to ruminate on.” Made with producer Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Mary J. Blige), the result is an endlessly illuminating body of work that's earned praise from the likes of Rolling Stone (who noted that “at a moment when pop strives for lo-fi, solitary-world intimacy, the jazz-pop whatever band refuses to think small”). Edgy. Classic. Country. A defining voice of music and a modern-day legend, GRAMMY award winner, Tanya Tucker is known for some of country music's biggest hits such as" "Soon," "Two Sparrows in a Hurricane," "It's a Little Too Late," "Trouble," "Texas (When I Die)," "If It Don't Come Easy" and "Strong Enough To Bend," Tanya has cemented herself as one the most admired and influential performers in county music. Since the auspicious start of her career at the age of 13, when released the classic county hit, "Delta Dawn," in 1972, Tucker has amassed 23 Top 40 albums, 56 Top 40 singles, 10 No. 1 songs on the Billboard country charts, numerous accolades including two CMA's, two ACM's, three CMT awards, and in 2020 she won her first two GRAMMY Awards for Best Country Album. Molly & The Danger Band started in 2006 when Molly Otis crawled onto a three foot wide ledge, hovering eight feet above a glass top bar at the Pavilion in downtown Hayward WI. You probably had heard or seen Molly Otis as the front person for Warner recording artists Molly and the Heymakers. She is a powerful vocalist and plays multiple instruments including fiddle, mandolin and guitar. Randy Wydra sings, lays down the bass lines, adds acoustic guitar and even plays drums with his feet. You could call them a rock/country/jazz/bluegrass band, but they are really an Americana band. The blending of different American roots music creates a unique musical cocktail, with a twist of Irish. From classic covers, traditional and original music, no matter what you call it, you're bound to have a good time.   First broadcast in 1994, Tent Show Radio is a weekly one-hour radio program showcasing the best live recordings from acclaimed music acts and entertainers who grace the Big Top Chautauqua stage each summer in beautiful Bayfield, WI. Born of the stark beauty and bittersweet desolation of the high desert, California trio Heavy Gus blurs the lines between grungy garage band fare, hazy surf, and dreamy indie rock on their captivating full-length debut, Notions. Bristling with live-wire electricity, the collection is lean and spare, fueled by distorted guitars and a driving rhythm section, and the performances are loose and organic to match, captured spontaneously in the moment with little room for overthinking or second-guessing. While all three bandmates come to Heavy Gus from very different worlds—Ulvang from The Lumineers, drummer Ryan Dobrowski from Blind Pilot, and singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Dorota Szuta from an unlikely combination of marine science and music—they fit together like puzzle pieces here, bound by the kind of love and trust that can only grow from years of deep kinship. The result is a record all about distance and connection from a band built on intimacy and personal chemistry, a mesmerizing debut that calls to mind everything from Meat Puppets and The Breeders to Yo La Tengo and Acetone in its artful balance of hope and fatalism, loneliness and desire, strength and vulnerability. Originally hailing from the rugged shores of Lake Superior, Sasha Mercedes writes image-provoking songs and delivers them with passion and conviction. Her powerful voice turns heads, as she beats on her guitar, brow furrowed and snarling! Mercedes has released five Americana solo albums, and though there will always be a soft spot in her heart for singer-songwriter stylings, Mercedes hasn't been tethered to any genre. She was the front-woman for Twin Cities-based rock band, Hot Pink Hangover, as well as the hook writer and fellow performer in Minneapolis hip hop trio, Channeling Grey. She has traveled the world making music and drawing inspiration out of every experience, which is evident in the lyrics of her brilliantly crafted compositions. She has shared the stage with TLC, Badflower, Dar Williams, Don Mclean, Tracy Bonham, Guy Davis, Pete Seeger, and others. She may seem hard on the outside, but Mercedes has always believed that rugged shores can polish even the roughest of stones. For more than 30 years, rust belt blues shouter and guitar slinger Larry McCray's greatness has been hiding in plain sight. A native of Magnolia Arkansas, Larry McCray discovered his love of music at a young age through his sister Clara, who introduced him to the guitar and the transformative music of Blues legends like B.B. King. After moving to Michigan at 12, he spent his teen years harnessing his guitar skills, adding rock riffs to the traditional blues style he loved. After high school, he began playing the local circuit, and by the late 80's he attracted the notice of Virgin Records and was signed as the inaugural artist to their blues label Point Blank Records. In 1990, McCray released his critically acclaimed debut album, aptly named — Ambition. A stunning debut, the record was a convincing hybrid of blues, rock, and soul, with McCray combining the interrelated idioms in sizzling fashion. Throughout the 1990's, he continued to help define blues rock, releasing several albums including 1993's Delta Hurricane, and 1998's Born to Play the Blues. After starting his own record label, Magnolia Records, the bluesman remained active throughout the 2000's, releasing 2001's Believe It and Blues Is My Business, 2006's Live on Interstate 75, and his self-titled album "Larry McCray" in 2007. He toured extensively, playing with blues greats like B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Keb' Mo and Joe Bonamassa, and worked with rock legends like the Allman Brothers, Levon Helm, Chris Robinson, Dickie Betts and countless others. Somewhere along the way, though, his path to the top of the blues world was derailed. During the recording process of his latest release, McCray felt "reborn" as he developed a newfound drive and passions for his career. In 2021, McCray released his first original material in nearly 15 years, "Blues Without You," an album that showcases his power as an instrumentalist and a vocalist. The 12-track record, produced by Joe Bonamassa's Keeping the Blues Alive label, garnered McCray even more critical acclaim with Blues Rock Reviews calling it "the record of a lifetime and the best project of his career." Born and raised on the shores of Lake Superior, Phil Anich served as Big Top Chautauqua's Operations Manager for nearly 30 years. A performer for most of his life, in the 1980's along with other local artists he began singing in shows written by Warren Nelson & Betty Ferris about the history of the local Lake Superior region. This group would go on to become Big Top's famed house band the Blue Canvas Orchestra. Every summer since Big Top's founding in 1986, the Blue Canvas Orchestra have continued to write and perform in original shows that have often celebrated the history, environment, and cultures of the local region. Since then, Phil Anich has continued to perform in shows at Big Top including Riding The Wind, Big Top Does The Beatles, Wild Woods & Waters, and most recently In Spite of Ourselves: The Music of John Prine & Nanci Griffith. During the 2022 summer season, Phil Anich performed under the tent with Dale Engquist, Brian Russ, and Mason Pavel, as Phil Anich & Friends opened for legendary country swing band Asleep At The Wheel. Steadily a rising star on the Midwest music scene, with two critically acclaimed studio albums under her belt, 2018's Hard to Love, and 2021's Out of the Dark, numerous award nominations, and opening for award-winning artists like Robert Cray and Elvin Bishop, Parker is now bringing her full range of talent as an accomplished singer, pianist, guitarist and songwriter to national and international stages. Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Madison Cunningham takes a literate, harmonically nuanced approach to folk and pop music. She first grabbed attention with the release of her debut EP, Love, Lose, Remember in 2017. Expanding upon her textured, sometimes jazz-inflected indie folk, her first full-length, Who Are You Now, arrived in 2019 and her sophomore album, 2022's Revolver earned Cunningham her first Grammy award for Best Folk Album. Rolling Stone describes Cunningham's sound as “a new spin on West Coast folk-rock, with classical tendencies, electric guitars, jazz-school chord changes and alt-rock strut all living beneath the same roof.” Her unique melodies, elastic voice, honest storytelling, and deft approach to the electric guitar, quickly earned her a dedicated fan base and saw her open shows for notable artists like Harry Styles, Punch Brothers, and Lake Street Dive. The Foxgloves are an all-female Americana band from the Twin Cities featuring Maura Dunst (Vocals/Fiddles/Mandolin), Liz DeYoe (Guitar), Steph Snow (Vocals/Ukulele/Banjo), Nikki Lemire (Vocals/Harp), Sara Tinklenberg (Vocals/Percussion), and Nyssa Krause (Bass). With songs you won't be able to stop humming. Their engaging presence, rich instrumentation, compelling storytelling songwriting, four-part harmonies, and creatively reimagined covers render them a force to be reckoned with. This powerful band is making moves you'll want to witness. A little bit of country, a little bit of folk, a little bit of classical, and a whole lot of heart — your toes will tap of their own accord. It's hard to imagine Gaelic Storm coming into its own after 20 years of success, but that's precisely what makes the group a true anomaly. Founded in 1996, the band's first major career breakthrough arrived before they had even recorded their first album. Appearing as the "steerage band" entertaining passengers with “An Irish Party in Third Class” in James Cameron's massive 1997 blockbuster Titanic, Gaelic Storm were widely embraced by audiences when they released their self-titled debut album a year later. Led by founding members Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger, the acclaimed multi-national Celtic juggernaut grows stronger with each live performance, and as you can imagine, after two decades and over 2000 shows (13 of which have been on the Big Top stage), it is a true force to be reckoned with. With their energetic mix of Irish and Scottish traditional fare, drinking songs, and playful original material they have developed a fanatic and well-diversified fan base. Country Music fans adore their storytelling, Bluegrass fans love the instrumentals, Celtic fans love their devotion to tradition, and rock fans simply relish the passion they have for their instruments. Throughout their multi-decade career, Gaelic Storm has amassed more than 250 million streams, racked up numerous Top 10 spots on the Billboard World Charts, and released 13 studio albums including How Are We Getting Home?, Bring Yer Wellies, and What's The Rumpus. With their most recent release Go Climb A Tree, their music has never sounded more representative of themselves as musicians and as live performers. In addition to Murphy and Twigger, the band features percussionist Ryan Lacey, piper Peter Purvis, and fiddle player Natalya Kay. Learn more here; https://bit.ly/3TSFYY4 Campfire Conversation:Eric and Ana – with Logan too – hit the water in this Campfire Conversation, highlighting some Wisconsin's “Must Visit” water recreation locations.  Much of the conversation begins in the north, with the Apostle Islands and its bevy of options in Lake Superior. The Brule River, known as the “River of Presidents” for its history as a popular fishing and getaway spot for U.S. presidents in the early 20th century, also gets some love as its flows into Lake Superior not too far to the west. Hopping the subcontinental divide, the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway offers all of fun and natural beauty you could expect from a river. The Wild Rivers Conservancy is active along the river, and the waterfalls coupled with fishing, paddling, and hiking along the shore offer abundant options for an adventurous day. We also cover the Vets on the River Program, which is active on the St. Croix. Flowing into the St. Croix in western Wisconsin is the Apple River, which offers tubing, floating, and a variety of popular water recreation activities in the areas around Somerset, making it a big summer destination. Of course the Wisconsin River gets its due, whether you're fishing in the Eagle River area, water skiing with the best of them in Wisconsin Rapids, touring the sandstone and limestone bluffs around Wisconsin Dells, or kayaking the Lower Wisconsin Waterway. The Wolf River runs through much of the North Woods and offers unbelievably amazing fishing. Ana dives into the Madison “chain o' lakes” (literally too, in real life) as she and Eric discuss the many options of Lake Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa in the Capitol region. Other chains of lakes popular in Wisconsin also draw a wide variety of water recreation opportunities, including the chains around Eagle River, the Cisco chain on the Wisconsin-U.P. border west of Land O'Lakes, and the Waupaca Chain O'Lakes. In the south, Geneva Lake and its nearby companions – including Delavan Lake and Lake Como – draw plenty of crowds but still offer areas of serenity. Geneva Lake is one of the deepest spring-fed lakes in the state; Green Lake, in central Wisconsin, takes the title of the deepest. Its also hugely popular for boating, fishing, and water skiing. Up for whitewater rafting? Head to northeastern Wisconsin and check out the rapids on the Menomonee River! Comparisons to rivers in the Mountain West are frequently made to a section of the Menomonee between Niagara and Pembine, where the rapids and drops are truly an adventure. The Peshtigo River in Oconto and Marinette Counties also offers fantastic kayaking and canoeing; the whole area teems with waterfalls. For extra twists and turns, we recommend heading to the Driftless Region in southwestern Wisconsin and exploring the Kickapoo River, which is one of the crookedest rivers in the Midwest – if not the country. Some great options for rentals can be found in Ontario, near Wildcat Mountain State Park. We didn't forget the cities, either: explore charter fishing opportunities off the lakeshore in Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee, Port Washington, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Algoma, Kewaunee, Sturgeon Bay, Green Bay, Oconto, or Marinette on Lake Michigan, or from Ashland, Bayfield, or Superior on Lake Superior! And for paddling in urban areas, it's hard to beat the La Crosse area on the Black and Mississippi Rivers – especially Pools 7 and 8 – or kayaking amidst the bustling action and tall buildings in Milwaukee on the Milwaukee, Menomonee, or Kinnickinnic Rivers in the heart of the city. Let's just say your options are many – and we offer plenty to choose from on The Cabin today! Inside SponsorsVISIT Lake Geneva: https://bit.ly/3wHvilfGroup Health Trust:  https://bit.ly/3JMizCXMarshfield Clinic; All of Us Research Program; https://bit.ly/3Wj6pYj

National Geographic photographer David Guttenfelder is no stranger to dangerous situations. After graduating from college, he left his life in rural Iowa to cover the 1994 Rwandan genocide, an experience that kicked off a decades-long career of reporting on war, conflict, and major news events all around the world. But when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down travel to most countries, he took an assignment close to his roots—paddling the treacherously unpredictable waters between the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. He describes what it was like visiting historic lighthouses and sea caves, and shares some surprising lessons he took away from that experience. For more information on this episode, visit natgeo.com/overheard. Want more? For more on the Apostle Islands and their history, read writer Stephanie Pearson's piece and see the stunning images David Guttenfelder captured while kayaking out there.  Guttenfelder is also one of the few Westerners who has spent an extensive amount of time in North Korea. The photos he took there show a side of the country people rarely get to see.  Also explore: He's also been covering the war in Ukraine. In the mid 1800's a mysterious man deemed one of the Apostle Islands as his own, and left society to be a hermit. He was known to not approve of visitors and would remove them by force. When he turns up murdered, rumors spread that there is a buried treasure on the island. We love our National Parks and we know you do too but when you're out there, remember to enjoy the view but watch your back.
