This is a revival of a piece from 2021 commissioned by SOAR running. There's cross-country. And then there are the cross-country relays. From here on, referred to as Mansfield. Listen to the podcast using headphones for the best audio experience and check out the extensive gallery to follow the story of how the National Cross-Country Relays, held in Mansfield since 1989, has become so adored by athletes from across the nation. For many in the sport of running, the draw of cross-country is sometimes hard to comprehend, but for others, there's nothing more exhilarating—especially when run as part of a relay. An event like Mansfield, where it's not so much athlete against athlete but club against club, presents clear wins for the argument of sport being a unifier. For being a force for good. For engaging communities. At Mansfield, you have a high-octane day of racing where community and competition mix seamlessly. A year, ten years or even a lifetime after racing here, runners still recall the twists and turns of the course, the panoply of club tents erected by the pond, and their duct-taped shoes ready to race. Mansfield is one of only a few events in the calendar where first timers, elites, young athletes and veterans unite to run XC for the greater good: their club. They say endurance running is all about commitment and nowhere have we seen it play out to such an extent as here in Berry Hill Park. Mansfield, we applaud you. Audio: Danny Easton Photos: Phil Gale and Emmie Collinge, a former Mansfield Harrier with a lifetime allegiance to the club. Presenter Kate Fairweather dropped in on this year's National Sheepdog Trials 2023, which took place in August. With 150 dogs competing over three days for the privilege of representing England at the next stage, it's a jaw-dropping display of human/canine teamwork, precision herding and communication. While they respond to whistled commands, these dogs must work independently of their handlers, often out of sight. Shepherd Cathy Cassie introduces Diva, who works a large Cumbrian flock of “heavy” sheep - an expression that, in the sheepdog world, is code for uncooperative and even aggressive… Cathy explains how the training required to compete in trails gives Diva an edge in her day job. Trainer and past winner Stuart Walton explains the site layout and why sheepdogs need courage as well as intelligence. Junior Vice President Richard Smith explains the context of competitive trailing. Recorded on location amid the wind whistling on a rather bleak hillside in Yorkshire, it's fascinating to hear about the astonishing level of precision demanded to compete at national level. Two of football journalism's heavy hitters join Gags Tandon to discuss Calvin Ramsay's transfer to Liverpool FC: Graham Hunter and Jonathan Northcroft!Jonathan and Graham are both Aberdeen fans so Gags gets their thoughts on the deal and what it means for Aberdeen. They quickly move onto the strengths and weaknesses of Ramsay, his performance in the SPL in the last year and when Liverpool's interest actually came to the fore. The trio also discuss how this could affect Trent's position in the long run and then move onto England's treatment of Trent too. Finally both awesome writers transition from the Trent chatter to have their say on the English National team and how they look ahead of a World Cup.All this and more on the Media Matters Podcast!Prefer to listen to our shows without the ads? Jan is a 45 years old female and her first triathlon was in 2014 (West Wight Triathlon, Isle of Wight), at the end of which she vowed never to do another one ever again! And then quickly changed her mind, wanting to do better and became hooked. She is a member of Wight Tri, an Isle of Wight triathlon club. She works full time (shift work) and has an extremely supportive husband who encourages Jan and attends events with her where he can. She has always been keen to participate in all sports since she can remember but she does not have a background in any of the 3 triathlon disciplines, having previously been an avid hockey player until deciding to hang her boots up 7 years ago. Jan has always been able to swim but never what she would call properly and about 7 years ago she decided to teach myself to swim ‘properly' with her head under the water. Prior to this she was never a keen swimmer and didn't really like going out of her depth etc. Once she had managed to a crack the front crawl Jan decided that there was nothing stopping her from giving a triathlon a ago and she signed up to her local event in September 2014, completing the bike course on a hybrid bike which kept throwing the chain off around the route. Jan completed the event, collapsed over the finish line and vowed never to do another triathlon again. But then her competitive side came out and she was hooked, wanting to improve. The rest is history as they say. Jan would describe herself as a jack of all trades and master of none. She qualified to represent the Isle of Wight at the Island Games in Gotland in 2017. In 2018 she was encouraged by a fellow club member to compete in a GB age group qualifier in St Neots and she gained a roll down place which gave her a qualification for the European Triathlon Championships in Weert in 2019. Jan was so excited to get a GB triathlon suit with her name on it. She finished in 18th place in Weert and the week after that event she competed at Leeds, gaining a qualification for The World Champs in Canada 2020 and also went on to re-qualify for the European Championships 2020. Jan also went to my second Island games in Gibraltar in 2019, representing the Isle of Wight again. In 2021, she has had a really productive season…. English National sprint triathlon champion in her age group, PSUK National Champion, re-qualified for the World standard distance Triathlon 2022 and European standard distance triathlon 2022. Jan has also just returned from the European Triathlon championships in Valencia where she took bronze medal (giving her a PQ for the sprint event in 2022 in Munich) in the sprint triathlon and the day afterwards she completed in the standard distance triathlon and finished in 4th place with a 10km PB. So all in all a successful season. Jan has signed up to complete a BTF level 2 coaching course, starting in 2022. she is a STA open water swim coach. Jan has completely changed her nutrition this year and has taken on additional support around sport psychology, making massive changes to her performances.

Michael comes from a very famous family that have been sheepdog trialing at the top levels for decades going back to before the war. Michael began handling dogs at the age of 12 and by the age of 24 had secured winning his first English National. Michael has gone on to compete in 4 International Supreme finals since, with 3rd place being his best spot to date.I found this interview particularly interesting for two reasons. the first one being where Michael shares his views on a particular thing that can happen with regard to breeding dogs. He says how he thinks owner expectations can adversely effect a pup's potential and development. And secondly, he talks about something that is very important in a handler and that I often think is the watershed for some handlers in terms of what they might achieve in trialling.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/churchmountsheepdogs)

Today our guest is Lawrie McMenemy. Many of you, myself included, were not around when McMenemy was one of the elite managers in English football. In his 25+ years he coached at Grimsby Town, Doncaster, Southampton, Sunderland and was an assistant with the English National team. Some of his highlights include: guiding three different teams to promotion, winning the 1976 FA Cup with Southampton, and finishing second in the league in 1983-84. He's also managed legendary players like Peter Shilton, Alan Ball, and Kevin Keegan. His off the field accomplishments are just as impressive. In 2006, he was awarded with an MBE, he was the Chairman of the Special Olympics UK and has worked for numerous charities like the Football Foundation. Southampton Solent University also honored him by naming their Centre for Football Research after him. The Guinness Book of Records even rated him as one of the twenty most successful managers in post-war English football. English national team footballer Lianne Sanderson grew up knowing she was destined to be a footballer. At age 14, she signed her first contract with Arsenal. By age 16, Lianne she was playing in front of 28,000 fans in the FA Cup Finals. From there, Lianne's career has taken off. She has played for 10 different teams. On those teams, Lianne has participated in 3 FA Cup finals and two world cups, including the team who won the bronze medal in 2015.
