NOMADNESS was the first of its kind targeting black and brown millennials, in the newly coined 'black travel movement'. The group currently surpasses 25,000 international members, with over thirty regional Ambassadors. From the success of the online group, Evita has garnered partnerships with top brands and destinations around the world. This includes Issa Rae, who she Co- Executive Produces The NOMADNESS Project web series with on YouTube. In 2018, NOMADNESS Travel Tribe hosted their first festival for black and brown travelers, and our allies. AUDACITY Fest is an immersive experience that celebrates and creates a safe space for discussions centered around traveling the world as a person of color. The physical festival has taken place in Oakland, Ca.; Memphis, Tn., and in 2020 pivoted into a quarterly, highly curated online experience. Evita's accolades include National Geographic's 21 Most Visionary Women Throughout Travel History, AFAR Travel Vanguard Award recipient, The Root 100, and being noted as one of Entrepreneur Magazine's 50 Most Daring Entrepreneurs of 2018. Evita was also invited to the White House under the Obama Administration for their meeting of world's creative change makers, for SXSL (South By South Lawn). She now serves as a Contributing Editor of CondeNast Traveler Magazine, keynote speaker, media personality, TED Resident, consultant for Destination Marketing Organizations, and continues her love of seeing the world while writing her first book and developing her own travel television series. In this episode we’re circling back to an issue that we’ve discussed on previous Folo episodes: Diversity and inclusion within travel. An example is Intrepid Travel, a global tour operator that refreshed its brand last month; in its press release explaining its new mission and vision it said that it was taking steps to create a more inclusive brand and, as such, was working with six consultants on specific areas to create and sustain allyship and accountability, like LGBTQ-plus, size inclusivity, modern colonialism, greenwashing and travel for the Black, Indigenous and people of color communities. It seemed notable that Intrepid was highlighting specific areas to help it mold ethical marketing guidelines. And so we sat down with Mikey Sadowski of Intrepid and Evita Robinson, the founder of Nomadness Travel Tribe and a consultant and speaker on BIPOC travel issues, for a frank talk about the need, and the work, on inclusivity and to examine how Intrepid trips are marketed and structured for BIPOC travelers. This episode was recorded on Thursday, Oct. 21, and has been edited for length and clarity. Episode sponsor: This episode of the Folo by Travel Weekly is sponsored by Princess Cruises. This week, Evita Robinson, founder of the Nomadness Travel Tribe and Audacity Fest, and Jessica Nabongo, the first black woman to visit every country in the world, are back on the podcast, joined by Martinique Lewis, author of the ABC Travel Green Book and a Condé Nast Traveler advisory board member. Throughout the episode, they chat about how some parts of the industry have turned a moment into a long-term commitment to the Black community—and how others haven't moved beyond a black Instagram square. Along the way, they shout out organizations like the Black Travel Alliance, of which Martinique is the president, that have formed to support Black travelers and Black content creators, and talk through all of the voices that are still being left out of the conversation. (To that point, Nomadness Travel Tribe recently release data from its BIPOC Diversity in Travel survey, which features insights on existing and emerging travel trends among Nomadness's diverse community. When Evita Robinson chatted with Traveler contributor, Diana Hubbell, earlier this year, she made one thing clear: The travel industry needs to work a lot harder when it comes to serving travelers of color. It was that lack of inclusive representation that propelled her to start her company, Nomadness Travel Tribe in 2011, an idea she had while working as an English teacher in the suburbs of Niigata, Japan. In this week’s episode, we sit down with Robinson to find out just how she built a 22,000-member community of travelers—and expanded into group trips around the world, initiatives like the Nomadness Project, a web series co-created with Insecure’s Issa Rae, and Audacity Fest, an annual travel conference for millennials of color. Eight years ago, Evita Robinson started the Nomadness Travel Tribe as an online community of about 100 black millennials who shared the common interest of travel. Today, Nomadness is 22,000 members strong and in addition to orchestrating epic tribe trips to all corners of the globe, Nomadness also has regular meet ups and partnerships with travel brands that are just now catching on to the black travel movement. It has also spearheaded its first conference dedicated to the needs, interests and passions of its largely black female members. In this episode, Evita shares how her popularity in high school combined with her natural affinity for planning large scale parties sparked her mission to bring communities of like-minded people together. With the help of her mother, she nurtured her talent for throwing fun, respectful and well-executed events that people looked forward to attending each year. She also talks about how what was once a burgeoning movement a decade ago is closer to becoming the norm for many Black Americans. Since the fresh-faced young professionals who joined the tribe at its infancy are now becoming parents themselves, this next generation of “junior nomads” will have grown up with travel as such an every-day part of their lives that it will be only their parents who can appreciate what a privilege this luxury of collecting passport stamps is. Evita also speaks about the importance of taking trips that go beyond just flossing for the ‘gram. “I think every two years you should take a trip that humbles you,” Evita says. The key to finding freedom in any trip outside of American borders is to make sure she comes back “not complaining about the same shit as I was when I left.”
#Almost30nation! Hello friends! Excited to introduce you to this week’s guest. Evita Robinson founded the NOMADNESS Travel Tribe, a first-of-its-kind movement bringing together and representing the underrepresented in mainstream travel. Their mission is to show the world that travel has no racial, gender, religious, economic, or interest limitations through community representation and relevancy (like the $50,000,000 being injected into the travel industry every year). In today’s political climate, it’s more important than ever to get out and travel, meet different people, and immerse yourself in diverse cultures. It allows us to gain perspective and see ourselves as just a part of humanity; something to keep you modest, keep you grounded, and keep you connected to what’s REAL! We love the way Evita embodies this, and we know you are all going to love her. We discuss… A stark view of how people of color are underrepresented in the travel industry The highs and lows of NOMADNESS’ group travel events (but mostly highs) How NOMADNESS came to be Reverse culture shock: when home feels like a foreign country How Evita approaches building a community Navigating a new challenge + stepping into your light How social media changed travel Evita’s relationship with spirituality The Airbnb experience for people of color + partnering with Airbnb Why you need people of color in your marketing teams + HR Creating safe + sacred spaces What’s next for NOMADNESS: the first U.S. festival for travelers of color! Today on the show, we have a woman who started a travel movement. Her name is Evita Robinson and she is the Founder of Nomadness Travel Tribe. Evita has always been a creator in visual media. Yet, it was a trip to Paris, six weeks after graduating from undergrad, that changed the scope of her personal and professional life. So in September 2011, she created the Nomadness Travel Tribe, an online social community primarily for travelers of color. Nomadness was the first of its kind targeting diverse millennials, in the newly coined 'black travel movement'. The group currently surpasses 16,000 international members, with over 100,000 passport stamps, and nearly 100 meetups a year, all across the globe. Evita has shattered the myth that people of color don’t travel. She is also a keynote speaker, TED Resident, consultant for Destination Marketing Organizations, and continues her love of seeing the world while writing her first book. On today’s episode, Evita gets into: How Nomadness started organically and she never expected it to be a business Why she doesn’t believe in 5 years plans and why you shouldn’t either Why we all need multiple revenue streams How she recovered from near burnout How she decides what’s best for her brand Listen on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher and wherever you get your podcasts Links mentioned on this episode Nomadness Travel Tribe Slack Making Oprah podcast Steve Jobs “Stay hungry. Evita Robinson, Founder of the Nomadness Travel Tribe, joins the show to talk about how she created the company from scratch at the forefront of the black millennial travel movement, her plans to grow and how she deals with her competitors. This episode originally aired June 27.
In September 2011, Evita "Evie" Robinson created the Nomadness Travel Tribe, "an online social community for travelers all around the planet, who have the similarity of an urban background and were looking for likeminded travelers to connect with around the world." What she did was kick off a new travel revolution, spurring thousands of travelers, the majority of whom are millennial black women, to pack a bag and see the world. These days, Evie is laser focused on how to take Nomadness to the next level, from hosting events around the world to purchasing vacation properties and, of course, staking her claim as the mother of the black travel movement. This Fall, her first TED talk, in which she discusses the history of travel in African American communities from the days of Jim Crow and segregation to Nomadness today, will hit the web. On facing adversity: "Sometimes the universe edges you into things. Life is really rough with me because I think it knows I can handle it. Sometimes it'll just kick you off the cliff and you've gotta free fall a little bit before you realize how to fly on your own." On her four-year journey to a profitable business: "I'm not gonna make money one way. I'm gonna make money 10 ways...it's all about diversifying your income." On facing competition from other black travel upstarts: "It's about innovating and thinking outside of the box and staying true as hell to who you are regardless of what other people are doing in your space." If you’ve ever wanted to lead a nomad life - traveling from place to place, seeing the world, enjoying the cultures and adventures of the entire planet - you are not alone. Evita Turquoise Robison was living the nomadic lifestyle long before she started a Facebook group around the topic - but when she did, it exploded. You can find out what it means to live a nomad life, why Evita and others find it so compelling and fulfilling, and what the Nomadness TV movement is doing to encourage, enable, and build community around a world travel lifestyle. There may be business potential in the things you already love to do. Evita Turquoise Robinson spent a year and a half traveling the world after graduating college, starting with a trip to Europe. She has since visited 20 countries and has lived on 3 different continents. Her love of travel and the adventurous life it provides has motivated her to share that passion with others. Over time she’s discovered that many others share the desire and enjoyment of travel that she has and she’s found great personal satisfaction building a community around travel and nomadic life. You can hear her story and be inspired by her enthusiasm and practical wisdom on this episode of Happy Black Woman. For greater entrepreneurial success, build a community before you build products. One of the lessons Evita learned almost by mistake was that the community she had built around the nomad life and lifestyle was an asset she didn’t know she had. When it came time to build products, courses, and actually monetize her passion for travel she discovered that the group of people who had already gathered around her were just as enthusiastic about her product ideas as she was - and they actually helped her build and refine her products in ways she hadn’t thought possible. You can hear why Evita says you’d be smart to build a community before you build products, on this episode. How to build an automatic focus group to verify that your product ideas will actually sell. One of the great benefits of building a community around your area of focus is that once the relationships are established the people in the community will help you know if your ideas for products or services are actually needed or wanted. All it takes is conversations or polls, posted within the group to get a ton of feedback about the ideas you have. But it won’t happen if you haven’t already built the relationship that enables your community members to trust you. Wouldn’t you like to validate your product ideas BEFORE you spend the time and money developing them? You can, and Evita Turquoise Robinson tells you how on this episode of Happy Black Woman. If you try to do everything you’ll accomplish nothing. As she has struggled to make her business work in the midst of traveling, Evita Robinson has learned that she can’t carry the entire weight of her organization on her own. If she tries, everything suffers in terms of quality and the most important things wind up not getting done because something more urgent always seems to push it out. You can hear how Evita has built a team that helps her run her business and the impact it has on her productivity and profitability, on this episode. Outline of this great episode [0:29] Who is Evita Robinson? [3:02] What happened 5 years ago that made Evita create her brand. Since her first taste of Europe at the age of twenty-one, Evita Robinson (Evie), has been to over twenty countries and lived on three different continents. After a year and a half of traveling around the world, she put her degree in Television/Video Production to use, videotaping her life on the NomadnessTV web series. Evie came back to New York on a mission to bridge her love of production and a newfound need for travel. In September 2011, she created the Nomadness Travel Tribe, an online social community for travelers all around the planet, who have the similarity of an urban background and were looking for likeminded travelers to connect with around the world. Nomadness was the first of it's kind targeting diverse millennial travelers, in the newly coined 'urban travel movement'. From the success of the online group, Evie thrust herself into the world of entrepreneurship, and in April 2012, launched the business home for all things Nomadness and travel oriented, Nomadness LLC. The group now currently surpasses 15,000 international members, with over 100,000 passport stamps, and nearly 100 meetups a year. May 22, 2015 Nomadness launched the travel web docuseries, The NOMADNESS Project, Co- Executive Produced by HBO's Issa Rae and Evita, housed on her YouTube channel of over 200,000 subscribers. The continuation of innovating the urban travel space has landed Nomadness in the pages of The New York Times, EBONY, ESSENCE, Entrepreneur.com, The Daily Beast, Huffington Post, Mashable.com, airtime on CNN.com and News One, Facebook Stories, NBC4NY, MSNBC's former Melissa Harris Perry Show, and as a travel expert regular on the tri-state area's award-winning PIX11 news out of New York City. To date, one of the biggest campaigns Nomadness has been featured in, was with Evita as a part of Oxygen Channel's 'In Progress' during Black History Month 2016.

Evita Robinson launched Nomadness Travel Tribe on Facebook when she was on unemployment and looking for a way to connect with other world travelers who were having some of the same challenges that she was at that time in her life -- wanting a space to share their experiences and longing to travel to even more far-reaching places. The New York native had no idea that this small group that began with about 100 people would grow to the community it is today, five years later, with 15,000+ people and nearly 30 international trips under its belt. Much like many of her extravagant trips organized for her tribe, Evita's entrepreneurial journey has been sometimes complicated. She's clear, in fact, that entrepreneurship can make you feel kinda crazy (I relate!) and she is candid about the important role therapy played not only in her business but throughout her life. On this episode, Evita opens up about how she built her mega brand, how she got over being a people pleaser, why she chooses to use her platform to discuss mental health, and the importance of having her brand's evolution reflect her personal journey. On this episode you'll learn: Why you have to be a little delusional to be an entrepreneur.Getting comfortable making business decision that piss people off.Shutting out the white noise and making self care a sacred priority. How to maintain your sanity as an entrepreneur. The importance of lifting the taboo of discussing mental health. Why writing in a journal is the cheapest form of therapy for her.Why she shuts down the idea that she's fearless. The dangers of scaring yourself into analysis paralysis.
