First Grader Silenced: The Fight for Bebe's Free Speech Rights

American Potential

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 26, 2024 43:48

In this gripping episode of American Potential, host Jeff Crank is joined by Caleb Trotter, attorney with the Pacific Legal Foundation, to unravel the extraordinary case of Bebe, a first grader whose innocent classroom artwork led to accusations of racism and a punishment that stunned her family. Even more shocking, the courts sided with the school district, claiming that her young age excluded her from First Amendment protections. Caleb delves into the legal and ethical ramifications of the case, exposing how government overreach can trample on the constitutional rights of even the youngest citizens. This powerful discussion underscores the urgent need to safeguard free speech in America's schools and the resilience of one family's fight for justice. Don't miss this compelling story of courage, advocacy, and the relentless pursuit of liberty.

In this episode of The New CISO, Steve is joined by guest Maria Sexton, Chief Information Officer at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. Before starting her security career, Maria worked as a self-described secretary, seeking a better financial future for her family. Now, with her dream job, she shares how to become a strong communicator and leader. Tune into today's episode to learn more about Maria's passion for the healthcare industry, her strong people skills, and why you shouldn't fake it until you make it.Listen to Steve and Maria discuss being confident in your strengths while understanding your weaknesses and what first-graders and board members have in common:Meet Maria (1:36)Maria reflects on why her current role is her dream job. With a diverse background, Mara found that healthcare customers were the people she wanted to serve. She didn't plan on landing in healthcare, but she resonates with the mission of the field, which is why she feels she has her dream job. She recommends that everyone find an industry that aligns with them.Getting Her Start (6:00)Before starting her IT path, Maria worked as a secretary, a term not often used today. During this time, Maria went through personal family issues and needed to evaluate her financial future for herself and her children.Always interested in computers, Maria talked to the IT department at her company and asked how to get involved. Their advice led Maria to get a certificate, thus beginning the rewarding career she has today. It was scary initially, but Maria allowed herself to try and fail to succeed.Successful Communication (13:39)Steve presses Maria on whether she always had the clarity and confidence she showcases today.Maria understood she would never be an engineer, but her strengths lay in being diligent and taking notes. Therefore, she was excellent at communicating technology to people without a technology background, giving her a robust career skill set. Empathy, communication, and public speaking abilities made her the leader she is today.Explaining to a First Grader (16:33)Maria shares her experience talking to her granddaughter's first-grade class about her job. She found these kids incredibly bright and showed a firm understanding of technology and computers.Learning how to communicate technology ideas to an audience without experience is critical. Standing Out (23:45)When evaluating a resume, Maria likes to see if they have motivation. Nowadays, more people than ever are interested in security. So, it's essential to evaluate if the people coming in are serious.Maria is looking to hire a self-starter who takes advantage of the resources available to work in security. She also admires when applicants understand their strengths and weaknesses and where they can be best utilized.Confidence In Communication (27:22)Maria could always communicate effectively. As the child of Italian immigrants, Maria was responsible for speaking on behalf of her parents and helping them navigate the US.Her childhood also gave her empathy and the ability to read non-verbal cues, which has been helpful throughout her career. Learning to communicate with those around you is critical, no matter your role.Don't Fake It Until You Make It (39:51)In terms of security, you really can't fake it because the consequences could be dire. But outside of security, Maria has never liked the phrase “fake it until you make it.”This saying irks Maria because she thinks it is terrible advice. If you don't know something, you should learn it. If you need a mentor, find one. You should want to get whatever you don't have because...

Could we finally be seeing light at the end of the tunnel? Today, Norm and Mike take up a couple of legitimacy-themed, nonalcoholic topics: › SCOTUS is set to render an opinion in Groff v. DeJoy—the case that implicates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which requires that employers make accommodations for the religious beliefs of employees provided that such accommodations are not an undue burden for the employer. In 2015, the United States Postal Service entered into a contract with Amazon which broke the long-tenured history of USPS employees not having to work on Sundays. Gerald Groff, the petitioner, was terminated from his career with the USPS for refusing to work Sundays, the day which holds sincere religious significance for Groff and which was worth the risk of being terminated from employment. How will the Court define or redefine precedent which illustrates the notion of "undue burden" with a standard of anything more than a de minimis accommodation? › Remember when we covered the case of Ethan Crumbley, the Michigan high schooler whose parents were charged with negligent manslaughter after Ethan brought a firearm to school and killed four of his peers? We have decided to go back further in time and explore stories from our elementary school years. We were a little worried that our memories couldn't go back that far. After recording our first episode, on First Grade, we realized our worries were for naught. In this episode we explore our experiences from First Grade. As luck would have it, our moms had saved our report cards from our elementary school years. We start with a review of our report card highlights. That gets us going on other topics such as teacher relationships, learning how to do arithmetic, issues with learning how to read and forms of punishment among other topics. By now, no one should be surprised when Eden compares first grade punishments to our modern problems with criminal justices. As usual, topics are covered with humility, personal experience and tenderness.   Hope you enjoy!Email us at DadStoriesPodcast@Gmail.comVisit our website at DadStoriesPodcast.comDownload our podcast from where ever you get your favorite podcastsMusic performed by Tom and Bobby Knutilla and written/arranged by Bobby Knutilla and Brian Roberts.

What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

This week's question is from Melissa, who says: Sweet mother of pearl, my five-year-old is in grade 1 and I’m already getting a LOAD of sass at homework time. Things I have tried and said to make it go more smoothly: 1. Telling him: “Everyone in your class is doing their homework right now too" 2. Sending him straight to bed after supper for yelling at me during homework... twice 3. Positivity and encouragement 4. Reasoning with him: “homework will be done as soon as you write out your words twice” 5. “Would you act like this with your teacher?” 6. Pure bribery- candy and/or tablet time. Help- I need some new ideas! Melissa doesn't say whether her son is attending school in person or remotely. Either way, the pandemic offers unique challenges that make the school day even more exhausting than usual, particularly for a first-grader who is only five. Amy offers some tips on making homework time less of a burden for kids and parents, including some great ideas offered by our listeners. There's also room for a whole lot of compassion here, especially right now. A five-year-old might just be too exhausted or overwhelmed to meet these expectations. Especially right now, our children's emotional health is more important than one more math worksheet. Amy also references our episode on homework, which you can find here: https://www.whatfreshhellpodcast.com/2017/10/episode-27-the-homework-slog/ Send us your parenting questions- we might answer yours next! questions@whatfreshhellpodcast.com Learn more about your ad choices. A first grader is the highest-paid YouTube star of 2018, according to Forbes. Eight-year-old Ryan from the United States stars in his own YouTube channel called “Ryan ToysReview.” The channel features videos that show Ryan unboxing toys, playing with them, and happily reacting to them, as a form of review. He reportedly earned $22 million through this channel in the past year. The online celebrity currently boasts of more than 17 million subscribers—mainly elementary school kids—and around 26 billion views. To determine Ryan's estimated earnings, Forbes calculated his revenue from June 1, 2017, to June 1, 2018. The publication used data from several online sources and exclusive information from some industry insiders. Forbes found that $1 million of Ryan's earnings were from sponsored videos, while about $21 million came from advertisements that play before his videos. In addition, Ryan earned money from numerous advertising deals. Last August, he launched his first toy and apparel line in partnership with famous US retailer Walmart. Called “Ryan's World,” the collection features toys that Ryan loves to play with.  Furthermore, it was announced last October that Ryan's channel content will be distributed on streaming sites Hulu and Amazon. Ryan's income was able to surpass other YouTube personalities' earnings, including those of American actor Jake Paul, Dude Perfect's five-man sports crew, gamer DanTDM, and makeup guru Jeffree Star. Although Ryan earns a lot of money, 15% of his income is put in a special account because of his age. This account will be protected until he becomes of legal age.

A daily devotional through the recorded words Jesus spoke while He walked alongside us. Our website http://alittlewalkwithgod.com. Today's Scripture Focus Mark 4:24-25 devotional summary Before you can multiple, you need to know how to add. Before you can do algebra, you need to have multiplication mastered. Before you tackle calculus, algebra, trigonometry, and geometry should be in your repertoire. And as you begin to master each of those skills, new horizons of learning open up for you so that you can solve problems with ever increasing difficulty that as a grade schooler learning to add, you would never have a clue how to begin to solve if your life depended on it. That's the way it is with spiritual things. Too many times, people think they should be able to open the Bible and know all the answers about life by reading the book. It doesn't work that way. We forget that regardless of our physical age, when we are born again, by the Spirit of God, we are spiritual infants. We know just enough about spiritual things to have our sins forgiven and begin to follow God's leading. As we continue to read His word, pray about it, follow the teaching He gives us, we begin to learn more each day. We figure out what it really means to let Jesus be Lord of our life. But we can't learn that until after we've had our sins forgiven and committed ourselves to Him. Only then do we begin to gain the additional knowledge about His guidance and leadership in our life, because until then, it's like that second grader reading a calculus book. Today's Bible reading plan: Read it in a year - 2 Kings 11-15 see the whole year's plan here
