How can introverted leaders lean into their quiet power?   For this Women of Color Rise Podcast, I talk with Erica Phillips, Executive Director of the National Association for Family Child Care, a nationwide non-profit organization dedicated to promoting high-quality child care by strengthening the profession of home-based early learning programs.    As a self-described introvert, Erica shares tips on how to lead as an introvert.   1) Practice self-care. Before a big presentation, Erica spends time by herself. She also meditates and takes walks. 2) Find ways to connect extroverted work to where you thrive as an introvert. For Erica, she loves conversations and building relationships. For extroverted work like presentations, Erica will connect with a few members of the audience beforehand and bring those conversations into her presentation. She'll also structure her presentation like a conversation and bring in input from the audience. 3) Bring other voices to the table. Erica is an inclusive leader who deliberately includes others in her presentations to share their stories and perspectives. 4) Choose opportunities thoughtfully. Erica is happy to meet with audiences that may have different views, but she is thoughtful to ensure that there is some alignment in values. For example, Erica presented to the Reagan Institute where they were able to find alignment in their shared goal of supporting small businesses. 5) Know that silence may not be the answer. Audre Lorde said, “Your silent won't protect you.” Erica realized that even though she might be uncomfortable speaking, she would be even more uncomfortable not speaking.   Get full show notes and more information here: https://analizawolf.com/ep-80-introverted-leadership-quiet-power-with-erica-phillips-executive-director-nafcc

What's the value?
"Peace" - Dr. Erica Glover

What's the value?

Peace. What a concept. There is so much to unpack in that word. When I hear it I get a visceral reaction to it. It's as if my mind and body are deeply conditioned to appreciate it. I don't know how to explain it other than it feels good. It feels like where we are meant to be. Yet for so many of us, it also feels like something so elusive. We spend so much of our lives searching, fighting, and yearning for peace--what a paradox. That is why I was so happy to talk to my guest today, Erica, who stated peace as her most important value. As way of background, Erica is an author and the founder of Disrupter University, a community of scholars who support educators and administrators through cultural awareness training, equity-based climate coaching, and community programs. That paradox shows up again when you consider the work Erica does around equity and inclusion. There is so much tension and conflict in this work, it doesn't seem like there would be a lot of peace to be had in it. However, Erica articulated so beautifully how she thinks about this paradox. Peace is not about everything working out the way you hoped or some utopian destination we will ever reach. The world is far too complicated and at times ugly for that to be definition. For Erica, peace is rooted in hope that things can change and confidence that you've done the best you can do. That sounds simple, but it is a messy, pain-staking journey to try to find this peace. We didn't only reflect on this in an abstract, philosophical way though. Erica and I spoke about her experiences as a child, as a college basketball player, and as an educator that molded her into the person she is today. We also spoke about how these topics play out in the equity work she does, dealing with issues like racism and police brutality. And, maybe my favorite part of the discussion, we spent time talking about how finding peace has allowed her to become a much more effective and empathetic educator. Erica has a perspective and self-awareness that is extremely rare, so it was truly a pleasure to have this conversation with her.

Erica Stanley-Dottin is a lifelong competitor and athlete, but it wasn't until she was in her 30s that she discovered her love of distance running: marathons and half-marathons, specifically. She also discovered that she is fast at these distances. Today, she has big goals: Erica is going after a sub-3-hour marathon. This is the story of Erica's dedication and drive, and the people who helped her get to the next level. Erica was a competitive track sprinter beginning in her teen years, all the way through college. She started out being coached by the legendary Fred Thompson, who founded the Colgate Women's Games: this is the longest running track series for women in the country; it's been happening for 47 years. After college graduation, however, Erica decided to hang up her cleats, and running became about fitness and health. That is, until she started running with a friend who was training for the New York City Marathon. This eventually led Erica back to competitive running, but this time tackling long distances. Her competitive spirit reignited by her distance running pursuit, Erica found her way to the competitive running team the Black Roses, a team with a particular focus on supporting women racers. Through working with her teammates and coach/team founder Knox Robinson, Erica's running progressed to the next level. She has continued to hone her distance racing skills and reach ever faster PRs, on her quest to run the marathon in under 3 hours: at Boston 2022 she ran a 3:01. For Erica and several of her teammates, this milestone has significance for multiple reasons, including adding their names to The List. This is an account of all the American-born Black women who have run the marathon under 3 hours. To date, there are only 24 names on that list: two of them are Erica's teammates. And no doubt, she'll be there soon. Erica will be racing for this goal once again at the 2022 Berlin Marathon, September 25. In addition to being a competitive marathon runner, Erica is the mom of two young boys; the New York City community manager for Tracksmith; and a social impact producer for the documentary Sisters on Track, which is streaming on Netflix. This episode features a bonus anecdote from Erica after the credits: it's all about world's colliding in delightfully fortunate ways and how running is about so much more than the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other. This episode is sponsored by The Feed, the largest online marketplace for your sports nutrition, offering the brands you know and love, from Skratch Labs, Clif Bar, to Maurten, plus their athlete customized supplements called Feed Formulas. In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Erica Lippy. Life and wellness coach, entrepreneur, and host of the well-known podcast Passion Love Pursuit, Erica Lippy helps women reconnect to their authentic self in order to live their best life. She believes that every woman deserves to shine the light within—to feel worthy, loved, and in full heart-body- soul alignment. But she also knows that the path to get there isn't always easy. Erica's journey of self-discovery and self-love took off after experiencing a series of heartbreaks. With a history of challenging romantic partnerships, she came to realize the single factor that remained consistent from one relationship to the next: her. It dawned on her that unless she worked on herself first, this cycle of heartbreak and hurt wasn't going to change. So she listened to that quiet guiding voice in her head, dug deep, and started to do the work. Erica got a life coach, rewrote her limiting beliefs, and redefined what she wanted out of her life. Slowly, but surely, things began to shift. She began to stand in her worth, speak her truth, and let her light shine. The result was a new found love for herself that was reflected in every aspect of her life, from her relationships to her work. She began to exude confidence from the inside out, attracted the right partner, and reconnected to her soul in a way that left her feeling lighter, more free, and better able to see the bright path in front of her. One where she could clearly step into her purpose, live authentically, and share her story with others. And that's exactly what she's doing. Erica's purpose is to inspire and impact womens' lives by authentically shining her light, so they, too, can shine theirs. She wants women to feel worthy of the life they dream of, and gives them the tools they need to make that dream their reality. For Erica, it's not a question of if, but when. Every woman has the light in them, all they need to do is (re)ignite it, and share it with the world. She discusses hope and her own drive to be the author of her own story. She recently ran in a whole marathon which was a big part of her healing journey. I was amazed by her presence and determination to be a beacon to other brain injury survivors. Meet Erica: On October 19, 2018, Erica sustained a severe TBI. She was involved in a MVA which left her unconscious and was subsequently airlifted for treatment. After being in a coma for six weeks, she beat the odds and emerged. She was told she may never take care of herself or her son on her own. She was transferred to Shepherd Center’s Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program https://www.shepherd.org/ where she had to relearn everything, including walking, talking, swallowing, and dressing. She credits the dedication of her husband and family as well as survivor groups to her recovery and healing today. Things we discussed: The shepherd center in Atlanta and Erica’s difficulty with realizing that she had a TBI. She discussed misunderstanding her thoughts related to brain injury and her own thoughts. She says “You are the author of your life” you may have a messy middle, but that isn’t the whole story (that’s me paraphrasing). There was a love fest at the end! Erica's research has led to some of our previous podcast interviews with experts on migration, democracy, and the making of places baed on community building and relationality. For Erica, collaboration and collective learning are vital for the creation of these places that are in constant transformation. She focuses on American suburbs, specifically the suburb of Aurora in Colorado, as sites where migrant communities, processes of local democracy, and possibilities for future metamorphosis are at stake. Audio production by Kyle Leve. Sofía Bosch Gómez and Alex Polzin interviewed Erica Dorn. Marysol Ortega and Silvana Juri crafted the Spanish commentary. Top athletes duke it out to outperform their opponents; usually only winning by a slim margin. That margin is what matters, and part of having a competitive edge means having high-value information on what your competitors are doing. Crayon offers competitive intelligence and product marketing to its customers, and Erica Jenkins, their Chief Product Officer, shares that doing this well requires great communication.Main TakeawaysData Insight Helps Create Magical Products: There are a million different problems and a million different software products that could help solve them, but resources are limited. Using data to help determine where the needs are greatest can help you as a product leader to guide your team towards the most profitable product solutions. You Need to Repeat Yourself: Some would say repeating yourself, even often, is necessary. Repetition helps other people remember important information and act correspondingly if acting is required. For Erica, rephrasing her ideas is a way to know if her message is being communicated correctly.  You Need to Spell It Out: Don't assume that just because the product you've built looks shiny and seems intuitive, people will readily understand how to use it. Even if it is painstakingly user-friendly, it never hurts to spell things out. Take advantage of creating walk-through tutorials for your products. It creates more value for your customers and highlights the features of the product. IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. In life, we all face challenges, but it is up to us how we choose to deal with them. Similar to athletic competition, we can meet real-life hardships with strength, as long as we have trained ourselves physically and mentally. In today's episode, co-hosts Vince and Erica discuss the importance of having a competitive spirit.  Recently both Vince and Erica have pushed themselves in ways they never have before. For Erica, training to compete in the WBFF competition taught her so much more than how to diet and exercise. For the first time, Erica was pushed outside of her comfort zone in multiple ways. To get through her discomfort, Erica explains that she had to show up for herself on a daily basis. Not only did her training improve her physical health, but it also taught Erica how to build emotional resilience.  Vince has done many fasts in his life, but for the first time he challenged himself to complete a five-day fast. Instead of jumping back into unhealthy eating, Vince allowed himself to naturally reintroduce food in a way that honored his body and the work he just completed. For Vince, choosing to participate in this fast wasn't just about resetting his diet, it was also about getting comfortable with stress. According to Vince, getting too comfortable is dangerous, so simulating stress better helps him prepare for unexpected conflict. Tune into this week's episode of the E3 Podcast for a conversation about the competitor spirit. Learn more about the importance of structure, simplification, and challenging yourself, so you can strengthen your competitive nature and be better prepared for adversity. Today's food for thought from co-host Vince: “If you don't put challenges in your life for growth, then life is going to show up and give you different challenges and force it on you.”   Quotes • “When dissatisfaction turns into comparison, that's where I've got a problem.” (02:20-02:24 | Vince) • “The next couple of months will dictate whether the stress that we applied in the competition was a net positive or net negative.” (11:30-11:39 | Vince)  • “If you drink, you must work out, and you can't eat bad. If you eat bad, you can't drink and you must be active and workout. If you want to not work out, don't eat badly and don't drink.” (18:10-18:24 | Vince) • “Be compassionate against the thoughts that you have against yourself and understand where they're coming from and where they're going.” (19:43-19:48 | Erica) • “If you're always chasing your thinnest, you're going to look your worst.” (20:57-21:00 | VInce) • “If you need clarity on something or you need to make a decision about something, removing things and making your life simpler is how you can have the brain space to receive ideas that are going to get you out of the space that you're in.” (38:41-38:55 | Vince) • “There are some days you do things that you don't want to do because they make you happy.” (42:38-42:41 | Vince) • “If you don't put challenges in your life for growth, then life is going to show up and give you different challenges and force it on you.” (45:59-46:08 | Vince)   Links BRAND NEW! In today's episode of the As Told by Nomads Podcast, join Erica Dhawan and me to talk about what digital body language is, what it means to be inclusive, and the tips for connecting better – digitally. Now that more work-from-home settings are in place communicating may be an obstacle for some. Without the personal experience of body language, understanding how to connect is a challenge. But for Erica, body language didn't disappear—it just evolved. Tune in with us and learn about how Erica sees body language in the digital setting in this episode! The Digital Body Language You Already Have Unlike when communicating face-to-face, understanding how someone responds to you through a video call or through chat can be very challenging. Most of the time, you're only limited to judging texts and video calls. When work is concerned, this can be frustrating. But don't lose hope just yet! There are typical examples of digital body language that you're probably just overlooking. If you observe more, you can totally inform yourself on how to better your communication and connection with work and colleagues when work-from-home settings remain. For Erica, body language is not lost when working or communicating digitally. It's just in a different form. How someone structures their email, how fast or slow they answer calls, how they use punctuations, and the frequency of their emojis are all examples of how body language works in a digital situation. They all contribute to the experience and either add or deduct from how someone receives the delivery of the message. They may not be the same with talking face-to-face, but nevertheless, they tell you a thing or two about someone's manner of responding in a digital space.Outline of the episode:[02:26] What is body language in digital form?[06:46] Digital body language has different styles![08:57] We are all immigrants to the world of digital body language.[11:44] The practical tips to improve your digital body language.[17:03] Erica: On speaking about connection and collaboration in a law firm retreat – A memorable experience on pivoting.[21:02] Every part of communication is always under the spectrum.[24:06] Formality Confusion – A form of anxiety that provokes digital body language.[28:02] Gender differences in digital body language exist; What is Connectional Intelligence?[33:12] Understanding digital body language is an opportunity to be more inclusive and less biased; Tips for virtual job interviews.[37:26] Erica: On deciding not to go down the traditional path.Resources:Website: https://ericadhawan.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ericadhawan/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ericadhawanInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ericadhawan_/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo2UXHdLiuhxhS9vwpG_S2gBook: https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Body-Language-Connection-Distance/dp/1250246520Connect with Tayo Rockson and the As Told By Nomads Podcast on:Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tayorockson Podcast:

iPS 207 White Label Apps On this episode on iPhreaks, we have panelists Guilherme Rambo, Erica Sadun, and Jaim Zuber talk about White Label Apps, its technical challenges, and its advantages over web apps, etc. Don't miss this one! [00:01:10] – Introduction to White Label Apps This is an app that you built at one time but you skin different things for different customers. There are a lot of customers around that will build an app but they got different versions of the app that they distribute on behalf of their customers. Your controls have a lot of the same behavior in your app but the color is different, the icons are different, maybe there’s text difference. [00:03:50] – Pre-built components This kind of notion of pre-built components has been in the development arena, specifically, in Apple’s ecosystem for a very long time. When the app store first started, you could buy custom widgets, custom controls, and custom art.  [00:06:10] – Customization Most of the companies have a very limited ability to customize. You can start up with things like changing the name of the app. You can change the icon. You can change the color scheme. You can change some text. You just solve the problem the user is going to deal with. [00:12:35] – Technical challenges For Erica, one of the biggest issues is going to be the customer ticketing process on tracking or the customer service process. Typically they’re calling the end owner of the app, which is not a very good solution. And you also have to support the businesses because those businesses have to support their customers. [00:16:10] – Corporate Entity If you are selling your apps to small realtors, you'll probably just manage everything yourself. You’ll do certificates, customer profiles. You’ll host it under your own app ID. But if you sell to bigger organizations, they might have their own Apple ID and want to keep it under their roof with their own Apple account. You need things like getting your own certificate with their Apple ID, getting provision profile, creating the app ID, going to iTunes connect and doing the same thing. [00:22:15] – If-def approach Typically what happens in most companies is your team leader goes, “Hey, we could sign a new customer. Let’s make the app. Let’s rebrand it. Let’s white label it.” The developers will shrug off their shoulders and say, “I don’t know how to do this so I’ll do something like creating an if-def for different texts.” That’s going to be a problem. But this is where a lot of people start. [00:25:40] – Interface file approach One approach is you could create your own tool to customize the apps. They are all the same app but there is one internal configuration file or database or whatever is different between them. Developers run into problems on finding ways to build internal tool that will reach their configuration file and modify the app as needed. Most of the companies that have a mature platform they can just drop the configuration file and build a list of file that describes where the images are, what the texts are if they have any features that are turned on or off. Most companies can build a configuration file because they’ve narrowed down what problems they’re going to solve. [00:35:30] – Saturation of apps There has been a push back in apps. We got to a point where a lot of companies build apps that no one cared about. No one downloaded them. If they download them, they didn’t use them more than once. People can make a smarter decision if they really need an app. They’re not going to download the apps for every business out there. If you are running a business and have loyal customers, you can get them to order easily with their app by first calling in. That might work in some cases or you can be making an app for more than just one pizza place. [00:40:35] – White label components vs. websites Web sites are not going to do push notifications so if you need to get a hold of people or notify them of something important, you need to get them to order an app. Their user experience is going to be better. But there’s a lot of benefits for something that you don’t use very often for making a web app because web apps work on every platform. Anytime that you can take advantage of the specific hardware features like 3D Touch or Touch ID, you need an app because you can’t use them on the web yet. The Touch ID is also great for apps that need some level of security like a banking app. Picks Erica Sadun Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Gee Rambo Stranger Things Jaim Zuber Turnpike Troubadours
