End of Days

Episode 293: Strange Planet Scratch at knowledge and invariably a mystery lurks just beneath the surface. It’s his indefatigable and passionate pursuit of these mysteries, his insatiable curiosity of the world around him and his unique and finely tuned storytelling abilities that have earned Richard Syrett the moniker, Canada’s Art Bell. And on Friday April 24th, 2009, Richard guest-hosted Coast to Coast filling in for George Noory. First, foremost, and always a broadcaster. Richard’s writing, story-telling, and interviewing skills, infectious enthusiasm and the ability to stare down chaos and confusion with a smile make Richard a rare and valuable media commodity. He has been producing fresh, compelling and provocative talk radio in Toronto, North America’s fourth largest market, for nearly 20 years. After graduating top of his class from Centennial College’s Radio and Television Program in 1992 he began working almost immediately at one of North America’s blowtorch stations, the legendary CFRB AM 1010. He received his “doctorate” in broadcasting working as the producer for such talk show legends as Larry Solway, Ed Needham, the late Brian Linehan, Andy Barrie, John Oakley, Michael Coren, Jim Richards and Spider Jones. In 1999 he took over the microphone for the first time with his own talk show and by 2000, his arcane Sunday night program examining political intrigue, the dark side of geo-politics, cover-ups, corruption, alternative energy, alternative health and unexplained phenomenon, had become an appointment tune. In 2003, his special brand of talk was chronicled on the front page of The Globe and Mail’s Review section (Canada’s national newspaper) and that spring his show earned a 13 share in Toronto’s very competitive market. Later in 2003, Richard left CFRB for cross-town rival, AM 640 to build and produce an edgy, funny new morning show and continue his own unique show on Friday nights. The show continued to be a ratings grabber, drawing a larger audience than the stations’ hockey broadcasts of the city’s beloved Maple Leafs. Richard was lured back to CFRB in early 2007 to host five nights a week. Over its two year The Mighty Aphroditerun, it garnered a dedicated, even zealous, following. He consistently beat his rival in the market, the behemoth Coast to Coast by as much as 2 share points. When Richard’s show was suddenly and unexpectedly cut from CFRB’s line-up as part of a ‘corporate reorganizing’ Richard’s devoted listeners organized and staged a rally outside the radio station in minus 30 degree weather! Despite being off the air, his past, archived RB shows continue to be downloaded from his website. One of his last shows in December of 2008 has been downloaded in excess of 31,000 times. Richard has obviously struck a chord with a huge market and has become the new voice of alternative talk radio. Richard is not, however, a one-note wonder. As a whimsical impressionist, he had created followings for his fictitious characters during his morning show producing stint and he is recognized for his political acuity. Richard resides in Unionville, Ontario with his Mighty Aphrodite and their twin boys.

Well, I was wondering about your journey a little bit.Well, I call my audience Green Future Growers, mostly they are interested in growing a lot of food, they have large backyard gardens, they are master gardeners, but I have gotten a lot of new listeners so there might be more new gardeners. I started my podcast in January 2015, and I have done 318 interviews with backyard gardeners, market farmers, etc and so I feel like since I started my podcast I could keep a class of students alive if I had to.  My husband and I live on 20 acres in NW Montana, so deer is a big challenge here. Many listeners etc say that is a giant challenge. Mikes goal is trying to grow as much of our own produce as we can but this year we are trying to do more, we are even looking into having a (https://wwoofusa.org/) coming to stay and maybe help Mike because we feel like this land should produce as much as it can and more then Mike can by himself in case we need food in the fall. It wasn’t until I saw children in a garden—holding seeds, planting them, touching the soil, and smelling, harvesting, and tasting food (nature)—that I knew they were truly perceiving their place in the natural world. And it made perfect sense. The most direct and intimate way to connect with nature is, clearly, to eat it. A small part of it becomes a small part of you—and it fills you up a little more every time. Eventually you begin to realize that you have always been 100 percent nature, that you are made of the same components of all that you see in the natural world—your body made of water and carbon, same as the flower stalks. Gardens remind us that everything is connected, and that “everything” includes us. The Little Gardener: Inspire Children to Connect with the Natural World  (https://amzn.to/3aEyccW) Here's my amazon review: Five stars***** All you need to help inspire the little gardener in your life. Don't forget to leave yours so this book gets shared by all who need it: Illustrations bring gardening to life in this little workbook that is designed by someone who obviously knows kids + gardens and how to love and enjoy them together! I grew up on Long Island till I was ten. My family moved upstate to where my dad had a hunting cabin.  Moving from the suburbs at the age of 10 for a fledgling 6th grader, but looking back on it, I'm so glad they did.  How lucky were you to get to move upstate. I loved the close knit community in the suburbs, but I'm a nature girl at heart, more of a country girl and I'm glad I got to develop a stronger love of nature.  Me too! Even when we lived on Long Island, we had a tiny postage stamp backyard, and most of that, probably 20-30% of that backyard, we had in vegetables all along the perimeter of the yard. There was never any question with the connection to where food came from because we always had tomatoes growing etc.... Support this podcast

**BREAKING: We’ve received a last-minute email from the WA court, there will be no Claremont Trial tomorrow (Friday April 24), court will resume on Tuesday, after the Anzac Day long weekend*** Fibres from anywhere and everywhere the victims went, alive and dead were tested by Chem Centre to try and find any matches to the critical fibres. There was a huge amount of detail put into the testing - Fibres from the carpet of the Continental Hotel, Jane Rimmer’s hairbrush, Ciara Glennon’s hairbrush. Socks, a toy rabbit, a ribbon from a diary and the carpet from Ciara’s room. Her car and Una Glennon’s sewing machine. Even the zipper lining from the inside of the body bag Ciara Glennon was placed on. A huge level of detail. What they found was none of the fibres from around Jane and Ciara’s lives - before they disappeared - matched the critical fibres. But 98 fibres found on their bodies after their murders match Telstra shorts and the car Bradley Edwards drove in the 90s. The full 98 fibres have now been discussed in court, but that’s not the end of the evidence from Rees Powell, he’ll be cross examined on Tuesday. Join Natalie Bonjolo, Tim Clarke and Emily Moulton as they discuss day 78 of WA’s trial of the century. The West Australian has also released a two-part video series, as Tim Clarke takes you through the areas which are key to the trial, from Claremont, where the women went missing, to Hollywood hospital and to the sites were Jane Rimmer and Ciara Glennon’s bodies were found. You don't want to miss my chat with Dr. Grant Scarborough, who took off his haz mat gear and took a break from treating coronavirus patients to be on the "Run The Race" podcast. He leads a ministry called MercyMed, which I recently helped raise money for. I start the episode (2:35) with how my COVID-19 Miles For Hope run went. It was 150 loops around WTVM (where I work), captured on 4 cameras for Facebook Live, garnering $7,000 in donations so far to help the non-profit clinic to test and treat for the coronavirus. You can still give to this great cause at www.wtvm.com/run. (5:19) Our interview with Dr. Scarborough, founder and executive director for MercyMed of Columbus (GA), starts with how they're battling COVID-19 and how the money raised through the run will be spent. (8:55) We get to know him as he talks about being a father to 4 girls and "watching" his wife exercise. Then we get into (11:58) the ins and outs of the coronavirus, which Dr. Scarborough describes as the common cold but an unprecedented strain. What are the unknowns even for medical experts? For people that tested positive, how are they walking them through the virus? (14:18) The doctor also gives his take on shelter in place orders, tough decisions for politicians, what will likely happen when businesses re-open. (15:50) Dr. Scarborough discusses the conditions of the COVID-19 patients he's seeing and treatment options, including zoom calls and a prayer team. Called into the medical field more than a decade ago, (18:39) this doctor says he wants to see God glorified by caring for the less fortunate - pointing out the Bible's focus on helping the poor, loving others, and also doctors as priests! So, can faith and medicine coexist? (21:23) Dr. Scarborough says absolutely, there's room for Jesus and science, while prayer and medicines can both be used for healing. (23:25) We talk about MercyMed, where they care for people more than just physically. The non-profit's origins include clinics for the poor in Memphis TN and Augusta GA, a mission statement focused on Jesus, and what the Bible says about showing mercy. Dr. Scarborough gives his honest take on (29:39) how fitness and nutrition impact your overall health, an even bigger challenge for the poor focused on simply surviving. People exercising less and eating worse is leading to more obesity which he calls "the biggest health crisis of the day." It's also the 2nd highest risk factor for dying from COVID-19 (after old age). We close our chat with a prayer. (37:44) In one of my final segments "Food for Thought," I have a story about a Philippines doctor who had COVID-19 and credits her faith with surviving the virus. In fitness news, there's a global event happening Friday April 24 called "Together We Sweat" - free live workouts from Australia, London, NYC, etc. by fitness app ClassPass. Thanks for listening! The California state capitol was the scene of two recent Lockdown protests, the first on Friday April 17, and a second, much larger one, on the following Monday. Documentary filmmaker Karlos Rene Ayala covered both and made a short film about each of the events. The two shorts mark the launch of his STIMULUS series, about life under quarantine. While the economic uncertainty created by the stay-at-home order was a unifying theme, he discovered that the protesters brought with them a range of other notions, including vaccine skepticism, anti-government sentiment and religious fanaticism. Karlos joined John Howard and Tim Foster to talk about his films and what he took away from interviewing people who hold views that were, in many cases, well outside the mainstream.

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Friday April 17th, 2020. The President announced a three phased plan to re-open the country. Once a state meets the “gating” criteria of a 14-day downward trajectory in presumptive and confirmed cases, a testing and contact tracing program in place and can treat all patients without “crisis care” they can begin Phase I. Which advises keeping groups to less than 10, work from home, restaurants, theaters and places of worship, can open with strict physical distancing. If the 14-day gating is still met, then Phase II, schools reopen, keep groups to less than 50, bars re-open with diminished occupancy. Phase III, if no evidence of a resurgence, resume normal workspace, resume visits to hospitals and nursing homes. The President noted, Governors will do what is best for their state. New York State, Los Angeles and Washington DC, have extended social distancing restrictions to May 15th. The FDA is asking those that have recovered from COVID-19 to donate blood plasma which could be used to help currently ill patients fight the virus. Japan declared a nationwide state of emergency. China had its worst 3-month economic downturn since at least 1992. The Mayor of London is calling for face coverings to be worn in public. Younger students in Denmark return to school with social distancing protocols in place. In Germany, the reproduction factor has dropped below 1. Meaning on average, each infected patient is infecting less than 1 person. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Details emerged this week from California and Santa Cruz County leaders on what it will take to lift the shelter orders. Santa Cruz summer traditions remain up in the air, including the Wharf to Wharf footrace, Junior Lifeguards and visits to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
