He recently became a world champion pizza maker, winning the International Pizza Challenge in Las Vegas, out of 100+ of the best pizzaiolos. And he gives God the glory for it! We chatted while eating a pizza he made for us at the business he's owned for almost a decade, Cerrone's Brick Oven Pizzeria in Columbus GA. Make sure to subscribe to this podcast to hear fun and inspiring conversations about faith, fitness...and food too. (2:49) Leo DiCesaris discusses his love for pizza, his family roots in Italy, studying how to make pies all over the USA, passion for cooking authentic italian food, plus how you can make dough lighter and more digestible. (10:38) Leo sees Cerrone's as "God's business." We ask him about that higher calling and giving joy to people through food and fellowship. He also gives some of his keys to a good work-life balance. (16:09) We then dive into the 2025 International Pizza Challenge: the rules, criteria he and the other pizza chefs were judged on, what was on his WINNING PIZZA (plenty of unique ingredients including a rare pig from Spain) that started with a dough that he created over the course of 2 weeks. (31:41) Listening to worship music while cooking in this competition, pizza champ Leo is glad he now has a worldwide platform to talk about honoring the Lord, and seeking His will. He has some Godly advice for future chefs and restaurant workers dreaming of success in the face of fear and a high probability of failure for pizzerias. (35:45) And nearly 3 years ago, this pizza business owner got into a horrible head-on collision, leaving him with a list of broken bones. He opens up about that, the full year of recovery, and his super supportive wife. (40:45) Leo is also a big guy, who played offensive tackle in high school and college and arena football - where he got lessons for life that have stuck! He talks about food (like pizza) being fuel for sports too, essential nutrients before and after workouts. And after talking about what I eat before and after long runs and races, I close the episode in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! As we head into Good Friday and Easter weekend, a local Pastor joined us to talk about Jesus dying on the Cross and rising again...growing up as a pastor's kid and his own call into ministry...what it was like starting a brand new church...how we can lay down our lives daily, as Jesus died for us...opportunities for churches on Easter...and their year-long prayer chain. (3:25) The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus was Plan A, but we can't live up to His standard. Pastor Grant Collins of Fountain City Church in Columbus GA explains that and how it applies to our lives. (13:48) His dad was a longtime pastor, and they were at church a lot. What kind of help does he give Pastor Grant, over the last few decades ago of ministry (also sharing those moments he felt called). And being obedient to God helps you discovery your unique calling. (27:45) Starting or planting their church 7 years ago, it was scary and their family almost went to Turkey instead. Pastor Grant had a wakeup moment that helped change his definition of faith and lead a mission-focused church without empty religious traditions. He says here are things we can do to take up our cross daily: disown ourselves, be convicted by His Word, put ourselves in God's presence, be rooted in community, have accountability partner(s), get involved in church. (52:30) Is his church doing Easter different than other Sunday services? Regardless, he knows it's one of the most attended and calls this an opportunity to share the Gospel, connect people with community. Fountain City Church is also leading a 2025 "Unbroken Prayer Chain for the Chattahoochee Valley" which other churches, businesses, small groups, etc. can sign up to pray certain days or weeks to help with what this pastor calls a spiritual "awakening" in this area: https://fountaincity.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/2643050. She operates a cafe in West Georgia with a motto of "serving coffee with kindness." We could all use that in our world today. Rewind back to what made her focus on loving people out of dark times, this business owner talks about growing up dirt poor with a mom who made life magical with outdoors adventures...leaving everything to hike the Appalachian Trail...making plans to kill herself but why she didn't do it...and the healing power of kayaking. Now, she's opening up a first-of-its-kind venture in the Chattahoochee Valley. (3:18) The owner of The Brick and Mortar Cafe in Columbus GA first talks about why she left her 3 jobs and sold all her stuff, a decade ago, to set out to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine - and then why she had to stop after nearly 700 miles. The roots of it were depression and proving something to herself and the power to keep moving. And in Maine, she got a job managing a coffee shop that inspired her to open up her own! (10:00) The mission of her coffee shop in "Old Town" is to love people where they are, put a smile on customers' faces. That comes from the dark place of Heather being suicidal, years ago, and one final phone call stopped her. Brick & Mortar may not be faith-based, but they want to touch people's lives. A small part of that is writing uplifting messages on their coffee cups. Heather also hopes she can inspire/mentor other female entrepreneurs who, like her, may have though these dreams are not achievable. Growing up as a people pleaser, she's also learning to take care of herself. She also talks about how her life changed from losing her mom recently, after being her caregiver, and how the cafe community she build supported her so much. (24:45) The next business for her is a collaboration with the owner of local italian restaurant Treviolis called "The Collegiate Outpost" inside Columbus Technical College, a new concept for this part of GA. it's not just a place for coffee, sandwiches, pastries, pasta but also designed with a culinary internship program where students can learn skills and get future jobs at area restaurants, cafes. (27:37) Not owning a TV for the last few decades, Heather loves the outdoors - getting on the water and in the woods for decompression, stress relief, meditation. And Heather gets emotional talking about how her mom showed them how powerful and exciting it is to be out in nature. She also shares some wisdom she's learned from the valleys and mountaintops...her evolving from a judgmental young Christian to a person focused on love instead of legalism...plus some of her favorite coffee drinks. And I close out the episode talking about the pros and cons of coffee for your health and workouts, then a final prayer. During this Women's History Month and anytime, her job as Associate Brand Manager for Aflac (headquartered in Columbus GA) gives her the opportunity to put women in the spotlight, like when she went to the NCAA women's Final Four last year, among some big names. We also talk on this episode about transitioning from being only to runner to strength training...dealing with the pressures of being a strong woman on the job and in the gym...and how faith brought her out of a path of panic. After a update on the growth of women's sports, (6:20) Madison Montgomery joins in to talk about her Final Four experience, why it's important to shine the light on female athletes, and her advice for young women. (17:00) Becoming "too thin" a year ago, Madison has since lifted weights more and hired a nutrition coach. You may be surprised what she's learned about workouts and especially food (and more of it). She also describes the "athlete camp" she recently attended. (27:18) In her mid 20s and busy juggling school and jobs and being fit...she started having panic attacks which led to depression and thoughts of suicide. She shares her story to help other women who may think they need to portray having it all together. (37:08) And Madison credits getting through dark times to the Lord's grace. Known as Chap, this Puerto Rican Chaplain in Georgia is focused on church unity and diversity, and showing our faith with works, hence the name of the church he's the founder and pastor for: Love in Action Outreach Ministries. He's also the organizer of a special event this weekend called "March for Jesus Columbus." You can learn more about both at https://www.facebook.com/loveinactionoutreachga. (2:33) Chaplain Emilio Rosa first talks about his call into ministry, that started with translating his dad's sermons into English for a church at age 8. (8:26) He recalls facing racism while growing up as a minority in the 1970s in Brooklyn NY. Rosa opens up about pet peeves about churches separated by race, but what can be done about the divided body of Christ? He says we have to be intentional about being with those that don't look like us, amidst a push lately for multicultural churches. (13:45) The event March for Jesus will happen in downtown Columbus GA - for a 4th year - on Saturday March 15, with gathering at 9am at St. Luke church then heading out on 3 mile march at 10am, with a break in the middle for a brief message and worship. Part of this is praying for local cities and leaders. Columbus' mayor is scheduled to be involved again. Rosa talks about why being part of this is so important, getting out of your comfort zone, showing a diverse group that has a message of hope for those seeing this march. (27:05) The chaplain also breaks down the ACTION part of his church "Love In Action Outreach." Most of Jesus' work was outside the church. He talks about how he/we can identify needs. Part of the way Rosa does it is through being on the Columbus Hispanic Outreach Committee - sharing resources, networking, then doing. We talk on this episode about his many roles and how fitness/exercise is a part of those. (2:41) Dana says he's out of his "comfort zip code" learning a dance for this Thursday night's gala. He's been sweating quite a bit while learning/practicing his 90 second routine with pro Tracie Chamblee, who was my partner when I was a "dancing star" 2 years ago. The most important part is raising money for Alzheimer's research and caregivers. This president of the local AHSAA association, covering schools in East Alabama, also gets in tens of thousands of steps during each football game as a white hat. It sometimes has to dance on the football field to keep from being run over. (22:04) Dana has also become a student of the game of hockey that he loves now. The longtime PA announcer and DJ for the Columbus River Dragons (formerly the Cottonmouths) talks about why this sport on the ice has hung around this part of Georgia for three decades now. (27:17) This scientist may have the strongest passion though for weather and forecasting! He tells a story about storm chasing and getting close to a funnel 4+ years ago in Eufaula AL. Dana also talks about how the 2019 deadly tornado in Beauregard AL (23 people dead) changed his mindset from working severe weather as an adrenaline rush to a real focus on being a service and saving lives. This episode, coming out on Christmas Eve, is with two of my best friends. They are pastors who lead a church in Illinois, formerly led youth ministry in Georgia. We had a superb conversation about the true meaning of Christmas...what a close relationship with Jesus looks like...misconceptions of our faith because of "headline theology"...the importance of friendship on Earth...reading the entire Bible in 30 days...the challenges of ministry...and a lil football too. (3:03) Joe Banks and Jarrod Six are the lead and executive pastors of Abundant Church in Alton IL. The 3 of us met a decade+ ago in Columbus GA. We start our pod chat with why CHRISTmas is the culmination of our faith and how it's an opportunity to show others our authenticity. How can an intimate relationship with Jesus (his birth being celebrated) be compared to intimacy in our marriage? (13:51) For those who want to hear God speak to you, His Word is a great start. Pastor Joe talks about some in their church kicking off 2025 with a Bible Shred, reading the entire book in 30 days! And they both gives keys to success to discipline in reading the Bible on a regular basis. In the face of life's ups and downs, (24:05) friendship is also crucial or "redwood faith." They explain. And instead of Christianity being about a stuffy set of rules to follow, His Word describes a life of joy. But what's it really like working with a best friend, side-by-side in the tough world of ministry? They both love football, but sports or other things we put above God...can become a real problem. (49:30) Holidays are for celebrations, but it can also be depressing and difficult, so these guys talk about how to bring people into community. Jarrod opens up about how it can be heavy for pastors carrying other people's burdens but it's a calling. And finding balance in ministry is a myth. We have a lot going on in our world and personal lives these days. Preaching lately about stress-free leadership and stress-free marriages, my guest this week is a Pastor in East AL and West GA who's giving some raw insight on hearing the voice of God (instead of trying to build faith) to help discover His will for your life...helping spiritual leaders in America plus on his numerous missions to Africa...strengthening the church's connection to communities...and why he started the "Unite The Valley" nonprofit that's about to have it's first big leadership event, a month from now. You can learn more and sign up at https://utvchatt.com/. (2:28) Pastor Curtis Doleman Jr. of Praise Ministry Tabernacle (Phenix City AL) explains how a deep connection to God and knowing His voice...leads directly to hearing the Lord's instructions for our life. To improve in leadership or anything else, do you try using your own tools or trust God and the tools he gives us? That can make it stressful or not. There are pre-conceived notions for leaders. He also explains the "staring contest" with God. (15:55) 33 years ago, Pastor Curtis had an unconventional salvation experience, alone in his bedroom. You don't want to miss this story, what he said to God and the quick responses in Scripture. (21:01) After going into ministry, he went on overseas Missions including to Africa, where Curtis also focuses on preaching to the leaders of churches, who also are stressed out and striving at times. He talks about the difference in prayer and worship in African nations. (29:45) A pastor for three decades himself, Curtis has long been called to help strengthen the church, which at times he says is like a "circus." Should we be quiet and stoic in church out of respect, trying to act perfect...or should we strive for freedom, real faith and an authentic experience with God? We talk about grace and sin too. (39:45) He also describes the paramount importance of faith leaders being connected with the community, local government, other leaders where you live. (46:50) The nonprofit he founded "Unite The Valley" has "lunch and learns" the 2nd Thursday of each month. And soon, they're hosting a leadership symposium January 9-10 in Columbus GA. The winner of Georgia's Strongest Man competition towered over me in our chat for this podcast...which you really should subscribe to, like, follow. Columbus GA native Trotter Barringer, who is now headed to Strongman nationals, gives us his regiment for the gym, nutrition, and balance with family/church life. (3:20) We talk first about how and why he transitioned from basketball and football to powerlifting then Strongman events. Trotter also had advice on strength training (for those who don't always like going to the gym). He says you can study like he did, then gotta put in the work. He's at the gym 4 days a week, for more than 12 hours total. There's plenty of sacrifice and recovery. (10:15) What about food and fuel for all those workouts? He aims to eat at least 7,000 calories per day! It isn't easy. His favorite go-to food is Mac n Cheese. (12:40) He describes what it was like winning the Georgia Strongest Man competition in his hometown, which included liftings things like 400 pound kegs and stones. You'll want to hear his top stats too for squats, deadlifts, and bench presses. Strongman competition preparation (16:12) also includes a lot of mental reps! How does he do that? And how do his coaches, wife help? Trotter also has to push through the pain, without getting injured. (22:05) Now, his oldest of 3 children, 9-year-old son is keeping in kids strongman events. There are also misconceptions about the sport, sometimes confused with body building, on stage in speedos. If he gets Top 3 at Nationals in Greenville SC September 20-21, he'll get his "pro card." The goal is eventually World's Strongest Man. Could this tall guy use his strength to maybe play in the NFL too? (29:47) Trotter also has a passion to be a man of God and pursue His will. He explains how he tries to be Christ-like in the gym, at work, and everywhere. But why powerlifting? He explains. And his favorite thing is having a max goal...and missing it! Keep improving, never be satisfied. (36:23) And this Strongman's got a few things he's focusing on heading into competition vs some of the best in the nation. I close us out in prayer. You'll see a familiar face in the latest Kendrick Brothers film "The Forge," hitting theaters just as this podcast episode comes out. Cameron Arnett, named Actor of the Year in 2020 by the International Christian Film and Music Festival, opens up to me about the lessons of discipleship and God's empowerment from this new movie...Christian morality causing him to leave acting but then getting back into it...his "Christ over Career" movement...filmmaking in Georgia, and more. Make sure to subscribe to "Run The Race." After introducing our guest and (3:53) giving you a taste/preview of the trailer of "The Forge" - exclusively in theaters on Friday, August 23 - one of the lead actors in that project (5:43) talks about the character being made for him. The annointed movie, as Cameron Arnett calls it, also portrays the plan of God - to go out and make disciples! Is God mad at the church or empowering us? He hopes Christians and nonbelievers take positive messages from "The Forge" about being a better parent, sibling, and putting God first: https://www.theforgemovie.com/. (13:27) Arnett, who started his entertainment career in the late 1980's, has been on TV shows like NBC's Miami Vice, Fox's Star Trek: The Next Generation, ABC's Doogie Howser MD, and more. But after turning down a role that included partial nudity, secular Hollywood turned their back on him. 20+ years later, he started acting again, but this time, representing God - who Cameron says provides and lifts us up, can help you flourish and have success- to give God the Glory. (18:13) He talks some about the organized movement called "Christ Over Career" - a way of life where God wants is to be the greatest and have dominion over the Earth, without and success and fame taking us over. (19:50) Part of Arnett's fame came from his first Kendrick Brothers move "Overcomer" which he shot in my home city of Columbus GA. He talks about that experience...plus the different roles of acting, producing, directing films. After pastoring for a few decades, he hopes more Christians become famous - to be able to proclaim to more people who God is and how much He loves us! Arnett also talks about what's next for him and how you can follow his career: https://www.cameronarnett.com/about. (31:00) As with all episodes, I close us out in prayer. Pastors' wives have a lot of pressure on them. My first ever trio of guests on "Run The Race" (subscribe to it) know this all too well. These women in Columbus GA are now being very open about their lives, with humor and honesty, in a new book and on a podcast they've been hosting for the past 4 years. (3:28) Jessica Taylor, Jenna Allen and Stephanie Gilbert are focused on breaking down walls within the church and crushing pastors wifey stereotypes. They first chat with me about the struggles and joys of being in ministry and being married to a pastor. Are they expected to be perfect? What are some wins? What pressures do they face in their marriage and church? (10:44) There are also misconceptions about church leaders like them. All 3 of these moms and pastors' wives have tattoos. Reaction to those? They want to be themselves and ultimately see the church unified! (16:49) This trio created the brand "Pastors' Wives Tell All": https://www.pastorswivestellall.com/. That's the name of their book, released this year, and podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/4uYPezTHqopDVdwx8mA3tj. They talk about how and why they started the pod...teamwork with different gifts...being vulnerable and helping others have healing. Check them out on Instagram too. (24:14) The big message is: you are not alone. And they say the podcast is not just for people married for pastors, but anyone inside/outside the church, women, whoever doesn't feel like the fit in. And they have fun! (34:00) When I asked them about Identity... they asked, who are we without our job? And do we have to earn God's love? No. We talk about breaking down those titles to know who we are in Christ, and being grateful for where we are - including our family. (40:00) Along with some tidbits on what they do for fun and fitness...Stephanie, Jenna and Jessica describe what it was like being on TV for the 700 Club a few times and also releasing their book earlier this year! Each of them has 2-3 kids, and they're busier now with "Pastors' Wives Tell All," so being organized and saying NO to more things is crucial. What's next? They talk about a national conference they're speaking at in mid July...an Africa mission trip...retreats in other states this Fall...and a Pastors Wives cruise next year. Some people may not think of law enforcement and fitness together, but that may be a misconception as our guest on the pod this week is one example of a police officer that's in good shape. Now, he and coworkers are about to do a relay run across the state of Georgia – which he talks about on this episode! We also discuss why he started and has continued running (even through injury)…how health and fitness can be a big part of our family and legacy…what he learned from the Army, CrossFit…and his Christian faith through dangers on the force. Make sure to subscribe to this “Run The Race” podcast. (2:37) Sgt. Dan Lyon has been on the Columbus GA police force for 21 years, ran his first and only full marathon 14 years ago about a decade after being in the US Army. Dan talks first about police, fitness and donuts – how thoese things impact their ability to do their job like chasing suspects. Now, he and 7 fellow CPD officers are doing Run Across GA, which is 277 miles from Tybee Island to Columbus over 2 days on Memorial Day Weekend. He talks about the logistics like living out of a van, running amidst the heat and hills, why they're doing it and why it's fun. Note: he's had a torn ACL for 4 years – but still runs and does CrossFit regularly, just not other sports. (13:34) During his 4 years in the Army, Dan dives into what he did as a guidon carrier, what he learned from the military about being on time, fitness and more. (16:56) What are the pros and cons now of his dangerous job as a police officer? He and the guys will also rep their police force while running across GA with the team name “Got 1 Running” – which refers to a term used on their jobs. Here's their page: https://www.classy.org/team/572806. This husband and dad (19:12) also has advice for parents about being active with your children and family. He's bonded with his daughter, now 23, through running races together. (21:37) And he tells the story about getting into running, decades ago, thanks to his sister who had not played sports. Now, he hopes to inspire other officers to run or get in shape or at least to stop drinking sodas. Dan stays away from sugar…but why? (27:22) We also talk briefly about how his Christian faith fits into his job and the dangers he faces and the gratefulness of citizens…then close out chat with more on the causes that they're raising money for through Run Across Georgia: MercyMed of Columbus and House of Heroes. Here's where you can learn more and donate: https://www.classy.org/campaign/run-across-georgia-fundraising/c568793. Take a listen to what they went through. #197: Keeping the Faith After Easter; Discipleship From a Lost Man Turned Longtime Pastor

Run The Race

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2024 57:41

Easter has come and gone...so what's next? That's what I asked a Georgia pastor who's been a faith mentor for me. We also talk on this podcast (make sure to subscribe) about his path to the Lord...5 decades in ministry...a recent tag team sermon with his son on the unlikely...the utter importance of discipleship...how sports can bring people to church...and more. (5:00) Pastor Mike McBride has been in ministry for 49 years, nearly 3 decades of that as a lead pastor of Trinity Temple Assembly of God in Columbus GA, where he married my wife and I, almost 24 years ago. After having high attendance at churches on Easter, it's a great beginning, but it's then a process of spiritual growth. Those instructions can happen at/through churches. (11:20) Before he became a Pastor, Mike first accepted Christ as a young teenager, after a church invite through basketball. Not having a family support system of faith, he was lost again, but listen to his story about a radical change that happened Fathers Day 1971, and how a Bible Study called "Navigators" thrust him even further. Those steps of faith next weren't easy. (22:50) God does not want to be your co-pilot, Mike preached. he explains. How do we let go and trust God? Does it get easier? It can be tough leaving security and following the will of God. In a recent tag team sermon with his son (who's been in ministry 35 years), they told the church about God using the "unlikely" do the impossible. Pastor Mike also talked about the thief turning to the man on the middle Cross...and how we can do the same. Having his family (29:09) be involved in advancing the Kingdom of God is important. Now in his 80s, Mike still enjoys golfing, fishing, hunting (and knows all too well how athletics brings people to Christ), but came out of retirement to be Seniors Pastor at a church in town. (38:00) This pastor defines Discipleship, how Jesus really modeled it for us, being Learners! Without that foundations, emotions rule. Nowadays, churches do this through small groups, life groups(used to be called Sunday School). (46:27) Top athletes and really any of us can use our platform and gifts for God. Part of that journey for Pastor Mike and his wife was both of them surviving cancer. That included 35 straight radiation treatments in his throat. (50:45) And whatever your difficult circumstances are, ask and HE WILL HELP YOU. This week's guest describes how what's in the Bible transforms people! (54:30) He closes us out in Prayer, then one last story about witnessing to the welders. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. Make sure to subscribe to this podcast too! (2:40) Stacy Mote's new LLC comes years after losing her beloved dog, then meeting a new one named Luna. Walking with her 20-30 minutes per day led to significant weight loss. Through "A Girl And Her Dog," there will soon be dog and owner obstacle races (first one with a clever name) in the Columbus GA area: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61556675221101&mibextid=JRoKGi. Along with handing out medals or pacing, many also give out drinks and snacks at aid stations along the way, "voluncheering" athletes on! How can doing that inspire you, give you a new behind-the-scenes perspective? Tri Columbus GA's next event is the Flowerfest 5K/half & full marathons at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain GA on Saturday March 2, where I will be the 2:00 pacer for the 13.1 mile race. You can register here: Tricolumbusga.com. And they still need volunteers: https://tricolumbusga.wufoo.com/forms/zgbssyj1i6qte5/. (18:00) From taking then teaching a "Run For God" class at a local church a decade ago, Stacy ran several 5Ks and this normally "lone wolf" had fun with the group through faith and fitness. She learned a lot of advantages of being active outdoors. Her passion for cycling came next, starting off with the Bo Bikes Bama event and loving "gravel travel." (25:55) Stacy Mote has an important message for those who think some challenges or goals are too big for them. Why not? Try it, she says. It's not about being fast or beating people but experience through participation! That includes her triathlons. (30:14) And, like me, she was at the recent War Eagle Run Fest in Auburn. Stacy shares an inspiring redemption story, saying the 3rd time's a charm after having disappointments in her 2 previous years at this event. This October, (34:02) Stacy is taking on a new "Biking For Borderlands" challenge, shooting for 58 miles on her bike in 10 hours in Arizona at the "Spirit World 100." We wrap up the chat with (42:13) a quick rundown of the upcoming races and triathlons she helps lead in West Georgia, plus a little more about how fitness improved her mental health - standing up more for herself, learning to say No, prioritizing things that matter, shutting down toxic things in our lives. We all want more money, but are you managing your finances properly now, the way the Bible directs us? What are your family's economic goals for this New Year? This Alabama native, mom of 4, and 4th generation entrepreneur has some expert advice on budgets, saving, giving, what God says about money, and "kingdom economics." (3:40) Charline Oworu will be teaching free sessions on blueprints and "Financial Foundations for Building Your Year" this Saturday afternoon, January 20, at the Columbus GA public library on Macon Road. What does God and money have to do with each other? Charline describes what Kingdom Economics is, which involves financial discipline and giving to help advance His Kingdom. And there are also other tithes besides money, she says. (9:33) She also breaks down the basics of budgeting like a recipe and (14:35) talks about making small realistic goals for 2024. Maybe changes with your Starbucks purchases? Charline explains how an emergency fund and small adjustments can lead to financial peace, which can help with your physical and spiritual health too. Tell your money what to do! (20:40) God is our provider - when our motives are aligned with his - but she asks, what will you do "when the riches are released?" As a mother and as a teacher of financial classes for young people, she has quick lessons about investing in things you believe in, delayed gratification, and helping others. This entrepreneur (33:25) wants to see others prosper but she has a few specific things anyone can do to learn, improve, and get other people to know about the product or service you provide. (37:38) Charline closes our chat with more specifics on what The Bible says about money, investing, filling needs, being successful. (49:00) I close the episode in prayer. "Serving Christ in the Community" is the longtime slogan (and jingle) of the nonprofit Valley Rescue Mission, which our guest Mike Gaymon came out of retirement to help lead nearly a year ago, as President/CEO. He has some advice for you about getting rid of the stuff/hurt in your ditch...faith where you're at, like at your job...how a good economy can be ministry...and following callings to serve God and others! Make sure to subscribe to this podcast too. (3:05) Gaymon, who was the top leader at the Chamber of Commerce in several states for nearly 40 years (26 years in Columbus GA). this preacher's kid felt a calling from God to serve the mission and the needy in this season. He has some personal stories on that. (9:45) His steps for letting God use you and your faith include: plant where God puts you, know your strengths, serve God not man, be honest, do the right thing for the right reasons. Mike also talks about hope...and vision! (14:42) After people have been in the "giving spirit" over the holiday season, the needs are still there at the start of 2024. It's about giving a hand up, not a handout. How can you take care of the needy where you are? How are your donations spent? The Bible talks plenty about serving others. (19:29) Hear what the Valley Rescue Mission has been doing for the last 60 years, with a high success rate of helping drug addicts too. Even the 2023 numbers are staggering. Mike talks about ways you can use your gifts and time to help people seen as "outcasts." (28:18) He also wrote a book called "A View From the Backhoe," short stories sure to inspire you. Mike and all of us have stagnant water in our ditch - hurts, anger, disappointment - that needs to be cleaned out, replaced with fresh water. Symbolic, right. How did he do just that? A big part of it is letting God use you, following His Will. (36:26) Way back, Mike was also a basketball coach at a junior college, seeing a door shut...surrendering to God...then a door opened. In life since, he's still been coaching those in economic development and now in the nonprofit ministry. (44:03) Valley Rescue Mission will be delivering coats to those who need them soon from our WTVM annual coat drive that ends Wednesday January 10. Platinum-selling Christian singer-songwriter Mark Schultz, who's had ten number 1 hits, has been a storyteller through music for many years. On this episode, he shares stories about his life, songs and growing family. (1:25) We start with a taste of one of his popular songs "Remember Me." (5:33) Mark discusses how he got into music, without piano lessons, and thanks to those jingles on TV commercials. Even as a kid, he dreamed of performing for big audiences and just wanted his songs to be on the radio. He discovered the power of music in stirring emotions. Now, he continues traveling the USA, playing in front of many people...songs he wrote in a room by himself. (13:22) Why Christian music? Mark's journey from Kansas to Nashville eventually led him to meeting a youth pastor while he was a waiter. A pepper eating contest with him and a ski trip with the youth group...led to some of his most famous songs. He was watching God work in the lives of these kids and their parents! (19:04) And how does he come up with lyrics? Mark explains how he plays emotions on the piano, then words come. The artist discusses how "Remember Me" was originally a graduation song and "Letters From War" was about his grandmother's letters, a tune that the Army took on as an anthem. (28:51) Mark and I met at the Sound Choices Pregnancy Clinic gala (an organization that helps birth moms in crisis) in Columbus GA a few months ago. Mark himself is adopted, saying he eventually concluded he was born out of love! Mark and his wife have 4 kids of their own now, adopting 2 of them. He has a passion for helping raise $$ for those who help promote adoption over abortion. As an adopted kid, he was so driven to succeed and earn his parents' love, playing many sports including being QB...but he's learned that being a son or daughter is enough. He compared it to the different mindsets in "Chariots of Fire." (39:00) This singer also enjoys biking. One of the most meaningful things he's done in life is a 3500 mile bike road across America in 2007, raising a lot of $$ for orphans and women in distress. He's got some funny stories from that road trip. Each year, he takes on a new personal challenge. The latest one is a new Children's book with the same title of maybe his most famous song "I Am." He's rekindling the passion for writing songs that move him too. (46:15) Mark Schultz also talks about this podcast title "Run The Race" and how one of his songs is based on the same verse in Hebrews. (50:39) He closes us out in prayer, then we briefly discuss his latest single, a hymnal that people of all ages know, (56:57) "Jesus Paid It All" - which you can hear the entire song at the end of this pod episode. Will exercise help you live longer or can you push yourself too hard that it can lead to heart issues? We talk about that and much more with the only trained specialist in both heart failure and pulmonary hypertension in the Chattahoochee Valley (West GA, East AL). The doctor also dives deep into the mind-body connection. (2:07) Dr. Hunter Champion, of Southeastern Cardiology in Columbus GA, first talks about how exercise or lack of impacts your heart, which can lead to good or bad thickness of the heart. He celebrates the process of trying to get healthier vs. the numbers of weight loss. He talks about experiments he's done and if you can push yourself too much, after we've seen a number of pro and college athletes recently collapse on the field or court. What can you do to avoid that? What are the red flags for amateur athletes? He lists, answers those and says...Listen to your body! To track your health stats, (11:37) like heart rate, there's technology that can help. Dr. Champion also discusses what it was like working with pro athletes in Pittsburgh and Baltimore. What keeps them motivated and what does he say to average patients who say they don't have time to exercise? The key: find what works for you. (17:03) As one of the men who coined the phrase "Broken Heart Syndrome" (sudden emotional stress of the mind, impacting heart failure), this physician shares a lot about the mind-body connection. That includes being strong mentally for athletic performance and when you're under pressure...mindfulness to keep negative thoughts at bay...box breathing...meditation instead of panic. (24:48) As for healthy aging, Dr. Champion tells people of all ages to eliminate excuses and find what you can do, even walking in a pool. He also has patients with the YOLO mentality, but too much pizza and living it up can lead to a shorter life. A hug thing, he says, is to know you family history for heart, health, cholesterol. That can help catch things before a heart attack. (33:57) He also give warning signs and preventative tips for everyday athletes. And there's also a shortcut that involves maalox. Dr. Champion also won't tell you to stop running or playing tennis or exercising...but will tell patients, you can't do it like you're used to (you may not be 20 years old anymore), so ease into it. (45:00) Finally, we talked about the mood benefits of exercise and especially the connections between faith and fitness. Dr. Champion discusses research on the power of prayer, plus wakeup calls for us to have a healthy mind/spirit/body. We all want to be around longer for a family, like this doctor who has 3 children.
